Change your MQTT topic names in Tasmota or have a bad day

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 04:17 PM PDT

So some background, i am a electronics guy by trade, repair stuff ,build cables, breathe lead fumes, the works. I also have a fair bit of experience with linux admin and managing server infrastructure, so when i bough my first house a few months ago i knew i wanted some cool smart house features and to do it without the cloud.

Before i got a electrician in (live in australia and do it yourself is a big no no with mains voltage) to install smart switches (these) I studied the beautiful tasmota templates (thanks blakadder) and made sure every item i bought had a template already or had tasmota support. I flashed like 14 things in one day with tasmota, some tuya convert, most serial because soldering to me seemed quicker. the electrician came and installed everything and i installed a few smart power monitoring plugs, one on the router, switch and server (running home assistant) and two others on box air conditioners. I logged into each piece of equipment through the web gui and ensured it functioned correctly and the next day i created a VM with home assistant...

I knew from my reading that home assistant wasn't "easy" but as someone who likes to play with random buttons I figured I could figure it out. I added option19 1 to all my tasmota devices to turn on autodiscovery and that worked fine, my next task was to make a automation that turned the bedroom air conditioner on when i pressed a button on the light switch. the automation was easy and it turned on no sweat... when i turned it off however, the internet, all my poe devices and server just died. Fudge knuckles, okay well maybe my automation was wrong, restarted the server, looked at the automation and tried again, SERVER dies again. fuck, well one more time then... try again same result. At this point i removed the power monitoring plug from my server because my partner was getting annoyed with the internet downtime. as soon as i unplugged it i had realized what i had done

Some tasmota templates automatically put the topic in the mqtt as tasmota %06X the last part sets the topic to a variable based on the mac address, when i configured all my smart plugs i left them as just "tasmota" so when i polled the mqtt topic to turn off it tured off everything with that topic name.

It was a funny in retrospect and i was really lucky my server has a UPS and afterward i changed my power configuration so the server, router AND poe switch all were on the UPS. So just a word of warning for the newbs like me, if you are using tasmota make sure you check the topic names.

Looking for the best smart switches to replace the existing dumb switches in my apartment

Looking for the best smart switches to replace the existing dumb switches in my apartment

I have the following switches across my apartment. They are in variants of 1, 2, and 3 different switches on each. I want to replace all of them with smart switches which are compatible with Google Home, and preferably Hue since I already have Hue bulbs in many lamps. I would laso prefer to maintain the split of 1, 2, and 3 lights controlled by each switch, so that I can control different lights in each room seperately, as it is now with these switches.

    1 switch

    2 switches

    3 switches

    What are my options?

How does the Alexa App communicate with a Wifi smart device on my network?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 10:46 PM PDT

Using an Amazon smart plug with home assistant is a huge pain in the ass so I thought I'd figure out how it communicates so I could look into triggering actions programmatically. I used burpsuite to look at all outbound http requests from my phone but there doesn't appear to be any traffic when I try triggering the smart plug. My questions are:

    1. How does the alexa phone app communicate with the smart plug and what protocol does it use?

    2. Is triggering a smart plug programmatically even possible? If so, using home assistant with Amazon products could probably be made a lot easier.

It's possible I'm making this harder than it needs to be. All I want to do is use my smart plug through home assistant. I followed this tutorial and after many hours of messing around with it I accepted defeat.

    Quick WLED Question

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 04:19 PM PDT

I'm ordering some led strips and boards to start a few WLED projects soon and the controllers come in a 4 pack which makes me want to tinker with them.

I have a bag of PL9823 LEDS from a while back (was going to build a lightsaber) which aren't explicitly supported by WLED. After some reading it appears they're WS2811 compatible, is that all that matters? I'd like to solder together some sort of array with them.

    Help With Smart Bulbs

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 03:40 PM PDT

So I have been helping my girlfriend setting up her new home. She is new to smart home tech and I am slowly getting versed in it. She has a couple of Mini Google Homes throughout her house, 5 smart bulbs - 3 by GE and 2 from Mercury, and a smart thermostat from Honeywell.

We have been running into issues with the bulbs. Frequently we will tell Google to turn off lights and it says okay but nothing happens. On the Home app we see at times the bulbs not to be on when they actually are. Everything is relatively close to the router so distance from it shouldn't be an issue. Any help or tips or advice is greatly appreciated on how to fix this!

I have a unique lighting problem without a solution.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 12:30 PM PDT

The room has recessed lighting controlled by a light switch. I have several lamps that I have to turn on manually because the light switch does NOT control any of the outlets. I'm looking for a solution that would allow me to turn on the recessed lighting, as well as the lamps using only the one light switch.

I know there are several products specifically designed for this application but they don't exactly check all of the boxes I was looking for.

*I'm looking for something that's hard-wired. IE. No batteries.

*Inexpensive, Under $50 for a light switch and one or two outlets.

    *Preferably, doesn't require Wi-Fi.

    *Doesn't require Google or Alexa

*Can support a combined load of up to 150+ Watts. (All lamps)

Nothing here is necessarily set in stone, I figured I would ask more knowledgeable people before I bought anything. If a standalone product doesn't exist I also wouldn't mind creating a DIY solution. IE. Raspberry Pi.

Also I'm quite new to this so I apologize if I missed anything obvious or if this is a repost. Any Insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Wifi bulbs with open apis?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 12:04 PM PDT

I bought a few of the phillips wiz lights but I'm disappointed that there's no open api to interact with them. I tried IFTTT but the latency was really bad, like 5 minutes. Maybe someday google assistant will offer an api. I know there's an unsupported lan control library but I just want to be able to issue rest calls: on/off.

So, looking for wifi bulbs that can be controlled. Just simple on/off. It looks like lifx has a rest api and a local lan api https://api.developer.lifx.com/. And sylvania/osram has a rest api https://docs.lightify-api.com/. Also their bulbs are much less expensive. I'm not really wanting to get into zwave/zigbee or anything that requires a hub at this time. Anyone using these? Are there others?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 05:53 PM PDT

I've got some Yeelights. They are perfect...hardware wise they are flawless. And I know they can talk to HA.

...but getting them onto my net requires (temp) installing some sht app and sync'ing with some mystery server that is def totally not in China...that may even not be around in 10 years.

I really want to buy a dozen more....but I need a work around on this mystery server bullsht before investing. Any ideas?

    Need advice on thermostat wiring

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 05:30 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/OuFKGzR

I'm replacing my old programmable thermostat with a smart one. But I've run into a small problem. The blue common wire was unused and snipped off at both ends by the original installer. Thankfully, it's still there, and I was able to open the sheath and pull some more out on both ends.

I have 2 AC systems in the house, and am currently replacing only one of the thermostats. Here is what my AC control board looks like: https://imgur.com/a/OuFKGzR

I believe the white wire from C and red wire from Y are making their way out from here to the other AC system.

My question: Can I safely attach the cut blue Common wire to the C terminal (and use it for my thermostat)? Or could this somehow mess up the whatever is already attached to the C terminal (i.e. where the 2 extra wires are going out to)?

    Thanks!

Dedicated Device "Scene" Capabilities vs Just Using A Hub

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 10:54 AM PDT

    Hi All,

I have a question regarding devices that come with inbuilt "scene" capability (ie press on button twice to activate a scene, etc.), and how this compares to just using your Hub to program a scene.

For example, Inovelli sells Z-Wave wall switches with and without "scene control" for a different price. If I plan to hook these up to Hubitat, is there any difference in the native "scene control" of this device when you double press the On button, vs me just using the hub to program in whatever scene I want when the on button is double pressed? Is there a reason to spring for the one that costs more? I wasn't sure if there was some extra functionality here that I'm not seeing (maybe hub scenes are more limited/slower than native device scene capability?).

    Thank you for your help!

Newbie Question About Controlling Older Home Theater Reciever with Alexa

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I recently set up an Amazon echo show, and fell in love with home automation. I have an older home theater receiver that I would like to be able to control but don't know how. The reciever was released a couple months before they started adding Bluetooth and wifi. It has HDMI CEC but I don't know if I can use Alexa to control it that way, or do I have to use an IR blaster?

    IoT Thermometer

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 10:50 AM PDT

Perhaps this is the wrong subreddit, but I'm looking for a thermometer that I can read out and track for a long time so that I can confirm that the temperature hasn't risen above a certain number.

I need to store certain chemicals at a safe temperature. So I want to be able to check back and see if the temperature has been unacceptable.

I also need to be able to prove the chemicals have been stored at a safe temperature. So being able to export a report or something would be great.

Finally, I have seen a few thermometers with an app. But they are from China and I don't want to risk the data to go through their country and servers.

So does anybody know of a thermometer, with an app or website. Preferably a non Chinese product (American, European, Indian)?

    Smart heated mattress pad

    Smart heated mattress pad

I've been looking to add my heated mattress pad to my home automation setup for a while. After a less than optimal experience with the discontinued Eight Smart cover, I stumbled on a contender yesterday at Costco. This a traditional dumb heated mattress pad but with one new important feature. It offers a mode that is compatible with smart plugs. Changing a setting allows it to come back on set to a heat setting. Now I just connect to a smart plug and automate away. Anybody use this before?

Need a new doorbell, but don't know where to start because I have old wiring.....

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 06:26 AM PDT

I have an old house with old wiring and want to upgrade to a smart door bell, but don't know where to start.

I have an old house with two apartments. The house currently has a wired front door bell on each floor with chimes. I have located the transformer, but it powers both door bells, I am assuming it would have to be upgraded, but because it powers both floors, not sure if it can be a direct replacement.

I have no problem running new wire or cat5 to the door bells if I needed to, just don't know where to even start when it comes to this kind of low voltage electrical.

I prefer homekit compatibility, so a good doorbell might be a little while away still, but I'm open to working on the wiring in the mean time.

Any suggestions on a DIY tutorial or site that has info on door bell wiring?

Need to convert a wired dry contact closure signal to a smart trigger event.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 08:42 AM PDT

I want to use the alarm outputs from a cctv recorder to trigger wifi lighting. Essentially I want to use the cameras as a motion detector for wifi floods.

A Konnected board would definitely work it just seems like over kill to convert a contact closure to an event. I'd also prefer the event trigger to be a hard wired network connection.

Starting automation - question about Schlage Wifi Lock, Google Assistant, and Globe Lights
