Differences in the same protocoll ?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 12:07 AM PDT

I've read that there are some kind of differences even in the same protocoll, so different Zwave protocolls, different Zigbee protocolls etc. Is there some kind of summary somewhere I could read up to understand what those differences are and what I should ideally be watching out for?

Is it just like an upgrade in e.g. range or are those differences so big that the protocoll versions don't even talk to each other anymore?

possible to make Google Home/Amazon Echo mute when not in use and change trigger?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 08:57 PM PDT

My friend had told me that he read recently that there is a way we can mute these devices when not in use which means, until I say "Hey Google" or "Alexa" it will not listen to us. Why I said this is, we all know they listen to us always and will respond to us when we use the trigger. Technically it is correct, but when they are in use, the data we are talking is being sent to the companies for their advertising or some other purposes. Is it really true ? I want to believe it, any one has tried a way to do that?

Also is there anyway can we change the triggers words ( not the predefined )

    Question about strip lights

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 04:20 PM PDT

Thinking of getting strip lights for my Kitchen, TV, Den etc. I was looking into the Govee LED lights. The concern I have with these is that if I cut this strip into 5 pieces and put it in 5 rooms, do I need 5 adapters? Also how will the smart home integration work? If I say "Google turn on LEDs" will all 5 turn on?

Basically I need cutable led strip lights where I can map commands to different cut strip components. What is the best solution for me?

LED Bulbs that are less sensitive to voltage leakage

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 06:55 PM PDT

We have a no-neutral Insteon dimmer for our kitchen light. We had halogens in it, but they all burned out. So we replaced them with LEDs from Amazon.

Turns out, they never really turn off due to voltage leakage, either due to the old ass wring (house built in 1910), or the Insteon dimmer, or both.

Are there any brands of bulbs that are less sensitive to the leakage?

    We need GU10 bulbs.

    Thanks.

Adding a fourth switch to a three-way switch

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:53 PM PDT

I have an exiting three-way switch setup. I want to replace one (or both) of the switches to enable Alexa/Google Home/Home Assistant control of the three-way switch. In addition to the smart control, I'm also hoping to find something that allows me to add a (battery-powered) third switch (without adding additional wiring) that integrates with the other two.

The best I can come up with is something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085TG46KN/ref=crt_ewc_title_oth_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A22QBHAUYAMP78 combined with a https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SmartThings-GP-U999SJVLEAA-One-Touch-Appliances/dp/B07F8ZFFQK that is hooked into Home Assistant.

While this solution would work, I'd rather not be dependent on HA and wifi to make the third switch work. I've looked at something like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/SkyLink-Wireless-DIY-3-Way-On-Off-Lighting-Control-Wall-Switch-Set-White-SK8/204177975 but it doesn't seem like this integrates with my existing switches.

Is there a switch (or switches) that cover my needs?

edit: I do not believe my lights are dimmable (they are powered by a LZ220V LED driver.)

Does anyone have any alternative methods / tools they use for location based routines to power lights/heating etc?

Bought a new house, time to start over again. Suggestions for one brand throughout house.

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 03:49 PM PDT

Bought a new house, it's twice the size of my current house which means many more switches. Will want to replace EVERY switch with smart switches.

In my old house, I had a mix of different switches and brands. From GE, to Lutron, Leviton, TP-Link, and just recently added 2 Inovelli switches.

I really can't decide which one to pick as I want the entire house to have all the same switches this time.

The inovelli switches are nice, and I know they have a huge following here, and the guys over at inovelli are awesome at helping it's customers out, but the only thing I don't like about the switches is that sometimes I push the paddle to turn the lights on and they don't come on, I have to push it again. I want them to be instant on and have some feedback like a regular switch (at lease the wife wants this).

Honestly the GE ones were the best I feel, but a lot of people don't like them.

Also would like to keep a budget here, especially since the switches have become cheaper.

Wi-Fi vs z-wave? I lean toward z-wave, but open to opinion.

Model for sleep detection using motion sensors, presenting my attempt and seeking for advice/comparison.

Model for sleep detection using motion sensors, presenting my attempt and seeking for advice/comparison.

    Hi everyone,

I've been building my home automation system for about 2 years now, working exclusively with Node-Red and interfacing with the Homekit ecosystem (node-red-contrib-homekit-bridged).

One challenge that I encountered as well as others doing automations, is deducing presence and sleep/night mode accurately using only motion sensors.

I wanna focus here on sleep detection without any specific sensor on the bed.

To simplify the problem we can use the case of only one person living at home.

I have placed Aqara motion sensor in every room of my apartment and have grouped the rooms in two zones, Day zone (living room, entry, kitchen) and Night zone (only the Bedroom).

I have deliberately excluded the Bathroom because it would be in the Day zone on the morning and in the Night zone in the evening.

For my model I have used frequency values (node-red-contrib-frequency-meter) to determine if frequency of motion is greater in the Night zone or in the Day zone.

Each time a motion is detected (every minute at most) a signal is sent to the Frequency node which output the frequency over a defined period of time (15m, 30m, 60m).

Node-Red flow with frequency-meter (excuse the mess).

I have found that the 60min measurement interval is be the most accurate to predict sleep mode without to much sensitivity. Also this interval would have some inertia when waking up just for a drink in the middle of the night.

In order to detect sleep mode, I simply subtract the night-zone frequency value to the day-zone frequency value, if it is negative it means sleep is detected.

As you can see on the Grafana screenshot, the motion frequency during the night is very low in the Bedroom, compared to the activity during the day, which adds to the challenge.

Grafana values for Night/Day frequency (down) and Difference between the two (up)

For now this implementation has been tested for one night only but the results are encouraging.

Through this post I'm seeking advice and or experience from anyone. Keep in mind that adding loadcells or other sensor to the bed would be off-topic here.

    Regards,
    Adam

    Automated Distilled Water for Humidifier

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 12:34 AM PDT

I have a Proscenic ultrasonic humidifier and need to keep my room humidified to 40-50% humidity.

But because I live in a low-humidity area of the country it seems like it burns through water. Almost 2 gallons a day to humidify my room (rented apartment, no central ventilation, window-portable a/c unit).

How do I automate water distillation so I don't need a dozen gallons of water from Walmart per week?

Do people use those home distillation units? (Seems inefficient when I need a couple gallons a day)

And/or how do I automate refilling this machine (5L capacity)

Do I just run the shower as a poor man's humidifier haha?

    Any help appreciated

Best battery operated z-wave remote/scene controller to control 2 bedroom wall sconces

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 10:28 AM PDT

I'm installing two wall sconces on swing arms next to my bed. My bed has wings on the side of it so it makes it really difficult to reach around to press any kind of buttons to turn on and off the wall sconces. My plan was to put some Innovelli Z-wave dimmers on each side of the bed that controls one wall sconce each. Then I wanted to find some kind of battery operated Z-Wave remote that I can stick to the side of the nightstand in order to do the following:

    • either remote can turn on or off either of the wall sconces.
    • each remote can dim the wall sconce on their side. Bonus if I can dim both wall sconces with the same remote.
    • must be battery operated. Bonus if it can be recharged but not necessary.
    • I'm just getting ready to put together my smart home system. I'm leaning towards SmartThings since I already have an open V3 hub. so if the remote works well smart things that's good. I'm also looking at home assistant so if it works with home assistant as well that would be nice.

The sconce uses a integrated LED so I can't put a hue bulb in it unfortunately. so I figured using a Z-Wave dimmer with a remote would be the best way to control it.

    Best smart lock without WiFi

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:34 PM PDT

    Resolved

Recently bought a house that needs a lot of work done so I'll have contractors floating in and out. I won't be living there and this won't have internet for a few months to save a few bucks.

Is there a smart lock I can remotely open without being in the vicinity or having it connected to WiFi?

The alternative is getting a dumb lock with a keypad but I'd prefer people to not have the code at their disposal for longer than they need it.

ETA - I marked resolved because everyone has confirmed what I was realizing would be the likely case - long distance control without WiFi doesn't currently exist in the manner I need it to. I sincerely appreciate the input and ironically makes me feel better that I couldn't Google a better solution. I'll take this advice into account when determining my next move. Until next time 🍻

Convert a wired themostat to wireless

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 09:46 AM PDT

I used to do control panels and we used to use pheonix contact's wireless I/O kit.
    https://www.phoenixcontact.com/online/portal/us?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/usen/web/main/products/subcategory_pages/Wireless_IO_P-08-11-03/a551dde8-eef5-4227-9401-1e1f9718e2b8

Is there something similiar for home use? Specifically what I want to do is use something like the product above to make my thermostat wireless.

I know honeywell has a wireless thermostat kit but they only connect via hub.

What I want to do is move my thermostat to another room without running a new wire where eventually I plan to replace with an ecobee. And I know there are satellites but there are plans for that room to be a bedroom eventually and I'd rather not have my future kid freeze our asses because I said no to dessert for dinner. :D

The thermostat is in the office but I want to move it to the master bedroom. With the homelab in the office makes that room rather warm which throws off our dumb thermostat.

Question! So I’m trying to setup this “C by GE” plug to control my garden lights and I’m getting this error. Anyone use C by GE products that have had any issues setting up automation? I’m guessing it’s me and that I just have no idea what I’m doing and it’s not a product issue :)

Whole house audio using Amazon Echos with ceiling speakers - Is this reasonable, and what kind of amplifier to power many speakers at once?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:04 PM PDT

For new construction, I'm thinking of doing whole house audio like this:

    • Living room floor - In-ceiling speakers, connected to an amplifier, connected to an Echo.
    • Other floors and "zones" - A copy/paste of the same setup as of the living room floor, with their own separate amp and Echo devices.

I know that Echo already supports commands like "Play Pink Floyd Everywhere" (synchronizing all devices), or "Volume 3", etc., so I could set the amplifier volume level to be the maximum volume I would ever want at Volume 10, and with one Echo per "zone" it will automatically allow me to play just that zone, or synchronize everywhere, etc. I have done this before, and it's easy and works well.

I also have considered that when I say, "Alexa, add cereal to the shopping list", that I don't want it to respond blasting all the speakers in the house, so I can set up a second Echo (Or Google Assistant) in the kitchen to respond to a different wake word to prevent that easy enough.

What I don't know is what kind of amplifier to to power lots of speakers at once. All I need is a audio input, which many Alexa devices support (including optical on some), but what kind of amplifier can output to 10 or so speakers at once? What's the Google search term to find this? Is it a "Multi-channel amplifier"?

Also - am I forgetting something, or is this a stupid way to go? What are your thoughts, experiences, and advice?

    Motion-based floodlight AND switched-based?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 03:06 AM PDT

Is there a way to setup a new outdoor floodlight so it can occasionally function as a motion light (when we're arriving home at night) and at other times remain on (when we're hanging outdoors at night)?
