Dumb question: Could a smart thermostat be installed using old home alarm cables?

Anyone used Moen U or any other smart shower system?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 06:42 PM PDT

I'm doing a bathroom remodeling and considering going with Moen U or another smart shower setup. Did anyone here have any experience with Moen U or another smart shower? I'm having a hard time deciding if it's worth it.

    Home network surveillance/notifier

    Home network surveillance/notifier

    Hey!

I just published the first alpha version of my first ever raspberry python project. It's a script that scans your home network for mac addresses and notifies you via email (for now) if a specified device came or left home.

It started out as a goofing around project but it actually taught me a lot and I plan on improving it more in the future. It could be adapted to to either activate an alarm system, switch off lights etc when leaving home in future builds.

If anyone could have a look and give me some feedback I'd highly appreciated it! Hope you like it:

    Hi
If anyone needs, I've build a Docker Image that updates CloudFlare record to the current IP, AKA use CloudFlare as a dynamic DNS provider

I thought others will probably find it useful, here are the instructions:

Are DIY google assistants affiliated with Google?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 09:32 PM PDT

So I'm a very new coder and I've had the idea of making my own voice assistant like JARVIS from the Iron Man movies. I would just buy one like the Mycroft/Picroft or Google home but I have major paranoia issues and I don't know where my information is going so you can obviously guess that it's a major trigger. I have ADHD and autism so my organisation skills are non-existent and I want to keep track of things and I want an AI to help me with it I want to be able to say "Hey JARVIS remind me to have a shower later today" or "Text (person) and tell them I need help with homework", you get the idea. I've seen videos of people making DIY google assistants but I'm worried it's affiliated with google and they can see my data. Since I'm new to coding it's ridiculously hard to follow along. My uncle who works in coding suggested making a voice assistant with a Raspberry Pi but since I lack the coding skills it's basically impossible. I need someone to basically explain the process like I'm five so I can follow along or any good sources/tutorials that are really clear and such. I'm currently considering hiring a freelance coder to make it for me but I'm worried about costs and I don't know where to look for one so I'm coming here asking for help and if anywhere here is a freelance coder and you know how to do this for me please hit me up and we can talk about costs and what I need. I really hope one of you guys can help me out!

Goes to find an garage lighted light switch?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 05:16 PM PDT

I am wanting to replace the in house light switch for main garage light to one that lights up when the circuit is on. I purchased an illuminated light switch that kinda worked, but the switch was lighted when garage light was off. I did research and found that the keywork I needed was 'pilot light switch. I installed that type in, and it appears that I got one for 3 or 4 wire hook up.

So I need help finding the right key words to search for an (pilot) switch lighted when light is on light switch that works on only 2 wires. ( American 110v system)

Hello all! I'm trying to get a USB LED Light Strip for a 75" TV that will turn on/off automatically when the TV is turned on/off. Or a set up that will do this simply on the cheap. Any recommendations/suggestions appreciated!

Need a smart lock for outdoor entry gate

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 02:32 PM PDT

I'm looking for a weatherproof smart lock or a way to modify a smart lock for an outdoor wrought iron gate, which currently has a double cylinder door handle (keyed locks on both sides of handle).

I need keypad and smartphone access but the lock can't have a thumbturn or other way to manually open the door from either side without a code (which would allow someone to reach through the gate and unlock it from the other side). I've does extensive searches, and the only lock that looks like it might fit the bill is the Ultraloq AB UL3 BT Smart Lever Lock, but reviews are mixed and it has it's own separate app and system. I already have Google Home or Nest products, so connectivity to one of these would be a huge plus.

    Thanks in advance!

    Arduino + Philips Hue

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 12:51 PM PDT

I have a small solar pump in my garden I would like to control remotely from my phone. The house wifi won't reach it but I do have some hue lights close by. Can I just configure an Arduino with an xbee shield and control using that? I only need On/off nothing complex. Thanks

Off Cloud Home Automation starting with lights. Should I get a Raspberry Pi?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 11:14 AM PDT

I bought a four pack of lights and I love them. I can control them with my phone but Google really seems to limit me. Having the unlock screen pop-up is just the last straw.

How can I take control of this without having to devote a lot of time and expertise to the pursuit? Is there something I can run on my android phone or do I need to buy a Raspberry Pi? Is there a simple turn-key way to do this off cloud?

-Prefer not to be dependent on an internet connection to turn my lights on and off

Home Assistant and Viessmann Pendola / Uhrenthermostat-F

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 10:28 AM PDT

    Hi!

I've recently moved and initially I wanted to automate my heating through the AVM stuff for the radiators. Unfortunately, my radiator valves are really old and there's no adapter available for such a type too. Luckily I can somewhat automate it with the little control panel I have in my living room which is connected to my boiler. The products are in the title.

Do any of you guys know, if it's possible to connect the Uhrenthermostat-F to Home Assistant? It would be awesome to be able to control and automate it.

The user manual for it is here (in german, sorry): https://eu-data.manualslib.com/pdf/de/pdf3/13/1250/124954-viessmann/uhrenthermostatf.pdf?1c8b03d55a875ab11f44b068a34f971b

Does IKEA Tradfri outlet relay Zigbee?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 10:01 AM PDT

I thought I read somewhere that the IKEA Tradfri smart outlets relay Zigbee messages from other devices when plugged in an outlet. Is this correct? I have some Xiaomi sensors that have poor signal quality at the receiver (CC2531) would adding some Tradfri outlets halfway improve the signal quality at the receiver?

Updating wired 2 zone home audio

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 07:14 AM PDT

House is wired for surround sound and has outdoor wired speakers. Trying to think of a way to get rid of the huge receiver I am using and still have multizone functionality. Not an audiophile but don't want to rely on batteries or have a bunch of plugs.

Is there a solution or just live with my receiver?

Simplify control of kitchen lights / DIY scene control possible?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 02:52 AM PDT

Hi all, I am trying to simplify control of the lighting in my kitchen. It has 11 overhead lights. 6 are on a 3-way with single switches in 1-gang boxes on the N and S walls. The other 5 are on two single switches in a 2-gang box on the E wall, one controlling 3 lights, one controlling 2.

I would like to be able to turn on all of them at once and from any of the three switch locations. Ideally, I'd like some basic scene control as well like high/med/low. Is this possible using off the shelf type DIY stuff without going to a more advanced system?
