Anyone else given thought to how screwed your spouse would be if you died?

I was trying to explain how some of the home automation and media services work to my wife, and she just said "if you die, I'm selling the house".

Parenting hack - Giving kids “magic fingers” to turn on Christmas lights

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:19 PM PST

I have twin two year old girls and I'm constantly searching for ways to use our smart home to make life fun. Here is my latest game:

    1. I hung two colored stands of Christmas lights in our living room. Each girl has a strand of their favorite color. One girl likes blue and one likes purple. They are seriously obsessed with these colors.
    2. Each light strand is powered via a smart plug.
    3. When the girls are being good, I can give their finger "magic powers" which enable them to turn on their favorite lights by pointing at the lights.
    4. Once I give them the magic powers they immediately point to their favorite light strand which automatically turns on, triggering the happiest two year olds I have ever seen.
    5. The "magic" is simply me holding my phone and pushing a button when they point to the lights.
    6. When the girls are not being good, the lights turn off, which has been a moderate deterrent (50% success rate).

This game probably only works for 2-3 year olds but I'm hoping I can help at least one family with this idea. It also has a high WAF. My wife has told several of her friends about this game. I racked up a few dad/husband points for only $8 in led lights.

Curious to hear if anyone has any other thoughts/ideas for fun Christmas games.

Are there any services that allow connected devices to talk directly with other connected devices?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:31 PM PST

I'm currently working on a proof-of-concept for a basic home automation tool as I become more acclimated with the space. From what I can tell, there's numerous ways for me to talk with other devices in ways the end user directly wants or controls, but no good way to talk with other connected devices in a user's home in the background.

The closest thing I've seen is that of Goole HomeGraph - a "logical map" of the home. However, this still necessitates creating actions that the end user must directly trigger or otherwise set up.

For example, say I'm making a smart coffee machine. Right now, it seems that the only ways to make a cup of coffee when the user wakes up is:

    • Work with the hubs to allow users to set a timer to make a cup of coffee at 8AM
    • Allow the user to create a routine using one of the hubs so that they make coffee whenever the user's smart blinds open, or their mattress indicates they get out of bed
    • Work with something like IFTTT to create a bunch of 1-1 routines that I can offer the user (this seems the most tedious)

However, what if the user wakes up late? What if I, as the coffee machine, can intuitively understand that if actions x, y, and z happen elsewhere in the house, then the user will probably want some coffee? Is there any service that exists that would allow me to just provide the user with a switch in-app that says "make coffee when I wake up," and the user switches it and it just works - no manual setup required?

Is that too farfetched? Should I keep reading up on smart home automation before asking further questions?

[question] can I run a smart home on a 5G broadband?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:18 AM PST

My 5G speeds are a lot faster than my home broadband, considering switching to a 5G broadband with the same mobile provider. Would this work? I'm currently also using a mesh network, I'm not sure if this will break anything?

    ZigBee/Hue 2.4Ghz Channel Limitations

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:50 AM PST

Hey all, curious about ZigBee channels and the implications of too many networks.

I recently lost all control of my Hue lights. I determined the issue was too much 2.4Ghz interference. I currently have 2 WiFi 2.4Ghz AP's on channels 6 and 11. The issue is a rogue device started spewing out a network on channel 1, which I believe conflicted with the Hue ZigBee network. I mostly referenced this article to sort things out.

    https://www.metageek.com/training/resources/zigbee-wifi-coexistence.html

My question is, are there other smart home systems that would continue to interfere with my setup? I was looking at getting a "HUBITAT: S2 Z-WAVE PLUS 700 SERIES", Z-Wave does run on a different spectrum than ZigBee right?

Edit: For clarity, I was running my bulbs with the Hue Hub Gen 3 on channel 11. All my bulbs were "unreachable" by the Hue app, but the bridge was online, I moved the hub and troubleshot everything I physically could, "cleaning" my house of Wifi seemed to resolve the issue. I'm not looking to replace Hue, as before this it's been very reliable and it works easily enough to keep my wife happy. The Hubitat is mostly to experiment with other devices besides lights.

Substitute for Alexa? (Voice command for Spotify, Timer, Alarm, Weather)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:03 AM PST

    Hi,

my girlfriend has Alexa at home (since before we met) and uses it to play music, set timers for cooking and ask for time and weather (and the news once a day in the morning). I very much dislike having such a device in my home and it might become an issue when we move in together, which might be in a few months from now. She said she likes the comfort, but also recognizes the privacy issues, so she's open to a local alternative that can at least provide the above mentioned functionality with voice commands.

Is it possible to create such a system which is ideally completely offline or at least not communicating with big tech severs?

I'm new to home automation but have some tech knowledge to make it work eventually. Ideally I'd be able to gradually add more functionality (light switches etc.).

    Thank you!

    Build from scratch

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:36 PM PST

I'm working on plans to build a new home. I'm curious, if you were to do the same, what would you do?

if you are an amateur and would like to help me design and build the system that would be awesome, but not expected. If you are a pro and typically charge for something like this, please let me know your fee structure.

If you want to just throw out a quick idea, tip, or link to your favorite DIY post, that would be appreciated as well.

How do I swap those ugly potatoes for one single check of the Circadian ?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:16 AM PST

Rant: Sengled has frustrated me to the point I'm about to drop my attempt at home automation.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:25 PM PST

I have been opposed to the Echo, but decided to pull the trigger because $18.99 plus a free Sengled smart bulb was too good to pass up.

Well, I purchase the Echo Dot 3 combo from Best Buy only to discover that the bulb does not connect to my Echo. Apparently I need a smart hub, which I bought (Sengled). Got the hub set up. But no matter what I do, I cannot connect this bulb. I even have two Sengled bulbs to try! I have done it by scanning the QR code and inputting the M/N and MAC manually - nothing.

The app also seems to recognize this as an Element and it's just the standard bulb.

I am so frustrated and can't express my level of disappointment here. I have gone through 3 bulbs trying to do this and I am just at a loss. I have even reconfigured my router to support both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. I am far from not-tech-savvy but I just cannot understand what I am doing wrong here. Any help would be deeply appreciated, but if not thank you for hearing me out on my rant.

Recommendations for WIFI 6 Mesh Network via Ethernet Backhaul

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:10 PM PST

Hi, I have just wired my home with CAT6E and want be able to seamlessness have fast wifi between rooms to capitalize on my high speed internet connection. I have a 4 bed 2700 Sq Ft house and have been looking at the Asus Zen Wifi and Netgear Orbi solutions using Ethernet Backhaul.

Is there a better solution given I'm wired up? I.e., going with a single Wifi 6 router with comparable APs?

3 way switch wiring and Lutron Switches

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:46 PM PST

    Hi everyone

I've been installing Lutron Caseta switches (with neutral) and dimmers around the house with no problems however I have been having issues in the basement main room. I've posted some pics in the link below.

It seems like this wasn't wired properly to me based on the other 3 ways in the house. There are 2 switches controlling one light, one of the switches (main) is adjacent to the outside light however if this switch is off switch #2 is completely dead and the light won't turn on. I'm hoping to set the wiring straight for future.

As you can hopefully see in the pics there are 2 lines coming into the box for this switch: each have a red/white/black. The red from one line and black from the other are connected.

Any help/guidance is much appreciated! TIA

    Outdoor Garage/Driveway Lighting (3 lights)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:28 PM PST

Just built a home and need to install the exterior driveway/garage lights.

I want to have bulbs in them that allow me to change the colors from my phone and set routines to turn on/off and sunrise/sunset.

Seems like the lanterns and such I'm looking at have different bulb sizes, which freezes me up to go try and hunt down if a compatible bulb exists for it and it's tedious.

Has anyone done this here that can help guide me towards something that works?

    Thanks!

    0-10v dimming

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:06 PM PST

I have undercabinet LED tape that uses a 0-10v driver. I have a compatible slide dimmer on my wall. If I were to get a smart (zwave) dimming switch, would that still work on this type of driver?

    RGB Ceiling Light

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:13 PM PST

Hello. First of all I'm sorry if this is not the right place to post. I have a question regarding some RGB Ceiling Lamps from Aliexpress with different types of connection (remote, wifi, bluetooth). I have a 100m² living room so I would need 3 pieces of the ceiling lights, is there a way to sync and control them together?

    Best thermometer option

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:45 PM PST

I'm looking at installing a whole house fan, and to find out whether it's worth doing I'd like to be able to monitor and log the indoor and outdoor temperatures.

I'd like to be able to export the data to compare the values of multiple sensors both inside and outside. Maybe 1 or 2 outside and 3 inside. Something that just plugs into my router maybe?

I don't think I'm ever going to care about pressure, wind etc so I'm not really looking at weather stations.

I have a pool so something compatible with a pool thermometer is a bonus.

If it can alarm at a particular temperature differential to let me know to turn the fan on is another bonus, and if it has the potential to control the fan is good too but that may be a bit pricy for something I don't even know I'll get yet.

I have no current HA gear but would like to get into it later down the track so compatibility is a factor too.

I live in Australia too, so some options may be either difficult to get or super expensive to ship over.

    Home Automation is Very Confusing.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:31 AM PST

For the past two days, I have been scrolling deep into r/homeautomation threads and plenty of articles trying to figure out everything about home automation and how to make a smart home. I'd just like to get some things straight since this is so damn confusing.

So please correct me if I'm wrong but this is basically what I want:

I need a smartthings hub to use the IoT protocols such as ZigBee and z-wave instead of WiFi, (personally) I don't want Home-Assistant because it seems a little too involved and complicated and I am not that worried for my privacy. Then, I have to link my google home to my smartthings app/hub as well as all of my lights, plugs, switches, etc. Once I link all of these to my smartthings hub/app, is that it? Is it all setup and using ZigBee? Can I live in peace? All of this is so confusing so if y'all could give me a basic rundown of what I'm missing or what I got wrong I'd be grateful.
