The best $25 I've spent on home automation: "dumb" wireless motion detector for my garage

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:45 PM PST

I've been adding a lot of smart home devices lately that require a "Hey Google" to get the job done. So when I accidentally broke off my garage light bulb outlet thingy I was ready to go hog wild with a bank of LED lights and a smart switch.

Then I took a step back and realized I just needed a motion detector light. No need to say "Hey Google, turn the lights on in the garage." Just sense movement and turn on.

I grabbed a few linkable LED shop lights at Costco, strung them up and plugged them into this GE wireless motion sensing outlet.

I've had it up and running for about a month now and it is SO SATISFYING to just open up the door to the garage and have the lights turn on in an instant. They stay illuminated for about 10 minutes and quickly turn back on if you're moving around.

Most of my time spent in the garage is IN and then OUT. So many little short trips, so worth having the motion detector.

I've had it running for about a month and so far, so good. Time will tell how long the battery will last on the sensor and how infuriating it will be when it finally doesn't just turn on.

Don't overcomplicate things, dumb automation can be bad ass!

2 Questions about integrations with my August lock (Hue and Amazon)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:33 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

I have 2 questions about integrations with my Yale Assure w/ August Connect.

First things first: I am in Canada.

    1) I see all over the August website that I can now integrate my lock with my Hue lights. There is lots of fun anecdotes about what I could do with this on both services websites, but nowhere does it say how to actually do it, and I don't see any way to do it from either app...is this not available in Canada or am I missing something?

    2) Amazon Key - basically the same question, do I have this option in Canada? Again, I can't find any way to enable it if so (Note: this post is not about whether or not I SHOULD get Amazon Key, just if I can lol).

    Thanks in advance!

I am new to home automation and bought some smart plugs to control some simple lamps. Is this risky?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:04 PM PST

I have bought these teckin smart plugs which connect to wifi. I am wondering if this is risky as it is connected to wifi and I have no idea what data is being processed.

As I said I am new to all this stuff and just wanted to get an overview of how this stuff might be any security risk.

Why are my Merkury Smart bulbs leaking liquid?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:04 AM PST

I took out three of my Merkury/Geeni smart bulbs yesterday. Today, I found an oily clear liquid with a burnt/oily smell on the table under the bulbs.

This issue was brought up a year ago in the following post, but no answers were found. https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/acln2d/liquid_in_merkurygeeni_smart_bulbs/

Two of my bulbs sat horizontally when installed, one upside down in a can light.

Will a hubitat hub work for me?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:41 AM PST

The amount of apps to control everything is getting ridiculous. I want everything in one place and some more detailed control over my automations. Alexa routines just aren't quite enough.

I think that hubitat will solve my problem but I want to make sure that everything I currently have will work with it. Maybe you guys can help me out if I list everything I have and let me know if this will work for me.

Echo throughout the house Lutron caseta switches 2 Wemo switches Wemo, Kasa and Amazon plugs Hue bulbs and strips Hue switch Blink cameras Ring doorbell and alarm Schlage WiFi lock MyQ garage door opener IAquaLink pool automation iRobot vacuum Govee leak detection Logitech harmony hub

I know that home assistant is an option also. But I don't think I have the time to learn everything that goes into it. The most I know about raspberry pie is that it is best with whipped cream.

    Programmable multicolor LED light string

I am trying to find a light string about 100 ft long that I can program to display different light patterns/colors. I feel like I will probably have to build something custom, but I'm not sure where to start.

    Drayton Wiser Installation Help

    Drayton Wiser Installation Help

    Hi Fellow SmartHomers,

I'm currently trying to install a Drayton Wiser Kit 1 to my heating system (combi-boiler) but I do not seem to be able to get the hub to power on.

The thermostat which the Drayton HeatHubR will replace is battery operated, and only had switched switched/live return cables wired into it (see pic).

I wired up the new Drayton wall-plate as follows:

    - Grey wire (neutral) to Neutral terminal

    - Brown wire (live) to Live terminal

    - A link between the Live and terminal 1 (COM), as the instructions attached show.

    - Black wire to terminal 3 (ON)

    - (Ground is not wired into wallplate in this photo, but it is now)

I mount the HeatHubR onto the wallplate, re-energize the circuit, but the HeatHubR just does not power up no matter what I do. There is no sign of life.

I'm not an electrician but I thought this would be an extremely simple job, but now I am wondering if I have made a blindingly obvious mistake that I cannot for the life of me see, or if there is genuinely something wrong with the Hub.

    Thank you in advance!

    Seeking wi-fi door sensor/plug/software combinations

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 09:17 AM PST

EDIT 2: Looks like STITCH by Monoprice has what I'm looking for. Just leaving the post up in case someone else searches.

I have moved offices, and due to layout requirements, I can't connect a light to the outlet controlled by the light switch. The room is dark and the light is about twelve feet from the door, so it's a huge pain in the ass to not be able to turn on the light when I come in.

My landlord won't allow me to replace the switch or attach a zigbee/z-wave hub to the network, so I'm trying to set up an automation that's just wi-fi. What I'm looking to do is open the door and have the light turn on. Anyone have any advice as to what sensor, plug, and software combination I can use to make this happen? I'm all zigbee/Z-wave at home, but I'm not quite sure how to make it work just over wi-fi.

    Thanks in advance!

EDIT: All light sources are floor lamps so motion-detecting bulbs wouldn't work.

    HELP - Beginner IoT Project

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:09 AM PST

So I am a IOT and Python beginner but I thought the best way to learn was to get stuck in and see where I end up... turns out I didn't get as far as I hope! :(

So a run down of what I am doing

    • Raspberry Pi Zero WH
    • RuuviTag Sensor Bluetooth
    • AWS IOT Core

The plan was to have the RuuviTag send the temperature and humidity to the Raspberry Pi and then this uploads to AWS. I had seen a post which someone was using and yes before you say I know they are not using Python - https://nordcloud.com/look-ma-i-created-a-home-iot-setup-with-aws-raspberry-pi-telegram-and-ruuvitags

I need help with the sending the data to AWS after that I will go at it again and try figure it out.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:52 AM PST

Hello i have only had amazon echo buttons, i believe they are bluetooth to the echo device but these are no longer available. Is there a wifi button available? or something not requiring a hub? I was looking at the amazon dash buttons but seems they no longer work. I only want simple things like light on or off or turn outlet on or off. Thoughts?

    Intercepting intercom buzzer

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:42 PM PST

I live in a 3-unit condo that uses a (search on amazon for "Pacific Electronics Amplifier For 3, 4, 5 Or 6 Wire Speaker Type Stations") for the front door buzzer and electric strike plate.

My dog goes bonkers when the buzzer rings. How can I intercept the buzzer and instead trigger my philips hue bulbs to blink? I need to keep the electronic striker door release working still.

My current set up is built on smart things platform and integrates alexa for voice.

    Lutron Dimmer switch

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:13 PM PST

I have a chance to get a good deal on lutron caseta switches. I can choose 10 dimmer switches. Or ten of the regular caseta switches. Is there any harm in getting all dimmers, even if they may be in areas where dimming isn't necessary?

    Thanks for your input
