What do you think about a weekly “What I Automated This Week” post where people can share their new automations?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 03:24 PM PST

I always love to hear about the clever ideas I see here. Yesterday there was a good discussion about someone who put their garage lights on a simple motion detector. It was great to see other people talk about their solutions, simple and advanced. What about a weekly thread?

Ideas for weight loss/fitness tracking with minimum data input?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 11:25 PM PST

One of the things I hate doing is data input.
I'm looking to lose weight with diet + light exercises.

What can I buy to fully automate:
    -scale weight
    -meals
    -walking outside
    -exercise

Right now I do have a Mi fit scale, but then it loses connection with the Bluetooth often and I also need to input the data manually in myfitnesspal. Is there a better setup?

I don't care if I need to eat the same thing every day or do the same exercise, I just don't want to do data input.

Highest wattage USB type C wall outlet receptacle with Power Delivery

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 09:09 PM PST

I'm searching to replace a couple wall outlets in my bedroom, to eliminate an Anker USB charger for my phone and laptop, and just have type-C built in to the wall outlet.

I found many on Amazon, but max wattage around 36W with PD which is not nearly enough to charge my XPS 15.

Has anyone found a high output outlet? I don't even need the normal power plug, just USB plugs.

    Weather Station for Smart Home??

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 06:23 PM PST

    Hi all,
TLDR: have a smart home (mess) and want to add a weather station: any suggestions?

    ----
Major Smart Home Components in use:
(yes, it's a mess, but I've been collecting bits and pieces for almost a decade now)

    • Smart Life
    • Smart Things
    • Ikea
    • Wyze
    • Ecobee
    • Alexa/Amazon
    • Google/Nest
    • coming soon:
      • Keen Home
      • IFTT integrations

I'd like to add a weather station that connects to wunderground and also let's me trigger scenes/actions/alerts etc

I've been eye-balling the Ambient Weather WS-2902C with WiFi.

    Any feedback, experience, suggestions?
    TIA

    Recommendations for fully integrated home?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 01:08 AM PST

A good friend has asked me to take on the "tech" side of a major home renovation project. It will likely encompass all the items listed and potentially others.

    • Climate control
    • multi Room Audio Zone
    • Possibly HDAV media to TVs in bedrooms / kids lounge
    • physical security (Doors, Windows, Motion)
    • Security cameras (IP camerssj. (NVR)
    • Access control at gates (video intercom)
    • Home networking wired + wireless
    • Possibly lighting
    • Garage doors

    (Other suggestions welcome)

The house is very old but has been completely gutted and rebuilt internally and is will be at the stage with bare studs and ready for wires to be pulled, both for electrical and for communication. So at least that aspect will be easier.

Planning on in wall speakers, touch screens in wallls.

I'm hoping someone has done something similar and may have some suggestions for a system or systems that play nicely and can give a nice polished product for the user.

Really liked the sound of control4 until I learned you need to hire a dealer. Which I have no interest in, as I'm a perfectly capable tech myself.

    Cheers

    Whole home audio 101

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 07:15 AM PST

Does anyone know of a place I can learn about whole home audio? Similar to Cisco Networking Essentials class (not in content but in structure and comprehensive-ness of material taught) but for whole home audio.

    • what is a matrix
    • what is an amplifier
    • what is line audio
    • how do speakers and amp power work together
    • etc.

Trying to fill gaps I'm my knowledge. I know there's a bunch of stuff I don't know. I also know that I suffer from something called I don't know what I don't know.

    Any suggestions much appreciated!

    Klikaanklikuit Opensource ?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 12:13 AM PST

Hello, is klikaanklikuit Opensource ? I m looking at there smoke detectors they look interesting. But I don't want to use their servers for communication. Since then they can collect to many personal information. Which will eventually be hacked and then used by criminals. Like all the Chinese ip camera which can easily be hacked by criminals to see if your home or not...

If you had it all to set up over again. A few questions on rebuilding a Homekit centric set-up.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:39 PM PST

For reasons I'm still fuming about, just lost every drop of HA set up I had. So I'm rebuilding my home system. I have outlets, switches, lights, HomePods, TVs, cameras, Sonos, CarPlay, and I'm in the process of adding more external systems and shifting a patchwork of security systems over. I'm a 37yr Apple veteran, so let's assume I'm sticking within that, though I'm happy to include small raspberrypi type subsystems and similar if there is good reason.

Things are running over a tri-band wifi mesh (w/HomeKit Secure Router) and an existing wired system w/central distribution closet that includes wired speakers, Rj-45, Rj11& RG-6 coax, connecting to the world thru Gb cable internet. We have 2 floors and a large connected but separate workshop and 1 disconnected outbuilding, property is .5 acres. There is 4 main users, 2 adults, two young tech savvy kids, as well as regular short and long term guests. (when not covid crap)

Thankfully our home was just starting to get full of devices and it will probably end up a good thing that I get to rethink a few parts of it. I also of course just learned about Controller.app for backups today. A day too late, but at least I know now.

So now that I'm starting fresh, I would love to do it with some 20/20 hindsight.

    Questions:

    1. If you wanted to use a 3rd party controller/ interface app, do you still enter everything initially in apple's Home.app and then let them grab the data? what about scenes and automations which can be initially set up inside various apps? or would you start it up any differently?
    2. What do folks use to visualize the home layout and what and where it all is? I have seen a few screen shots of CAD style 2d & 3d floor plans with device layouts, are those just built by the person, or some program that you customize? I do a good bit of SketchUp and good old school ID drafting, so I actually already have a full model of my property i made of the years to play with.
    3. If you had to start all over again, what is something you would have done from the start, or done differently, or made sure you read before you started or other advice?

    Four-way switched lamp

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:25 PM PST

So my goal is to have three points of control for one lamp.

It doesn't need to be integrated with anything else.

It kind of looks like the IKEA Tradfri stuff - one bulb, three dimmers - would work but it doesn't really say anywhere that I can find.

Anyone know or have another economical solution?

Solar powered remote control activated landscape/pathway lighting?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 07:13 PM PST

I just want to be able to illuminate parts of my driveway when I'm coming home or leaving. I have one flood light but it doesn't reach part of my driveway well. They have solar things that you just stake into the ground which operate by turning on when it gets dark or by motion activation. I don't want either of those. Motion activated drives me nuts.

Any ideas? Something that can be controlled by some kind of remote that I can hook up to my home automation.

How to migrate links between Insteon PLMs

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 05:51 PM PST

I'm currently running an Insteon PLM (USB) connected to my mac running Indigo. I want to add an ISY994i connected to a new Insteon PLM (serial) so I can test that out as an alternative/addition.

If all my Insteon devices are currently linked to the USB PLM via Indigo, is there an easy way to migrate those links to the new serial PLM so I can trigger them on the ISY?

I have about 35 switch/outlet devices so really want to avoid manually adding them all if possible.

ZWave relay to integrate with Honeywell Alarm

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:35 PM PST

I am looking setup a simple ZWave relay that will power a red LED light by my back doors when our alarm system is armed to ARM STAY or ARM AWAY.

Any suggestions? I know the Honeywell is ZWAVE compatible just need to figure out the parts.

I'm hoping for it to be battery operated so I am assuming it would be a relay in between a battery pack and the LED light then when the system is armed it trigger's the relay to open and illuminate the red light.

    Thoughts?

    Smart Lock for this door?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:11 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/VRnoGc5

    Side view: https://imgur.com/a/45Tetct

My door has this single plate behind the handle and the lock. I thought August might work but nope. The issue is the plate that attaches the August to the door won't work.

Are there any smart locks that would work with this?

Edit: Added side view. Also, changing the handle hardware is the last option. It's a metal door, so any new handles would have to line up perfectly... and the wife likes the look of the current hardware (which is why we were looking at August)

    SmartThings hub died

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:04 PM PST

So my SmartThings hub decided to take a crap on me. Just in time for them to be sold out EVERYWHERE. I've been trying to find one for about two weeks now and haven't had any luck. I'm looking for a replacement hub. As much as I love the thought of getting really technical and nerdy with my home automation, I really don't need anything fancy. I'm looking for something that will appeal to the masses in the event that I sell my house. So ease of use and setup is a must. Also, I don't want to leave behind a $400 piece of equipment. I don't have any zigbee products almost all of them are zwave. So I need something cheap enough that I wouldn't mind leaving with the house, something easy to setup, and something that works with zwave. Any suggestions?

Kangaroo Motion Sensor "MOTION1" got bricked by automatic firmware update...

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:49 AM PST

I just contacted Kangaroo support yesterday and they confirmed it and sending me "MOTION2".

They didn't provide the logic/reason of this bricking and they were like "You're out of the warranty period and we'll send a new one as courtesy" as if I would need a new one had you not bricked the one I have that was working perfectly fine for over 2 years...

I'm writing this to inform you because they didn't communicate this in any way before.

And also, does anyone know a way to revive the "MOTION1" version I have via pushing some unofficial firmware/update to it I wonder? You can see the which version you have when you open the back panel.

Convert your existing Lights into Smart Lights with Shelly 1L and Home Assistant (Video HOW-TO)

Convert your existing Lights into Smart Lights with Shelly 1L and Home Assistant (Video HOW-TO)

Are you ready to convert your existing lights into smart lights in under 10 minutes? If yes, I will show you how you can do that using one of the latest product from Shelly called Shelly 1L. For those of you who already know me you guessed it right I will also connect the Shelly 1L to Home Assistant.

One of the best features of the Shelly 1L is that the neutral wire in your lights wiring is optional. That means the Shelly 1L will work just fine with or without neutral wire. That also means that you don't have to change the wiring or to run new cables, you just have to put the Shelly 1L behind an existing wall switch. The other cool feature is the overheating protection.

Let's now see how the Shelly 1L looks like, then we will do the wiring and finally we will integrate it with Home Assistant.
