Nfc tag to control smart home?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:07 PM PST

I got some nfc tags the other day and I want to use them to automate stuff. One idea I have is when I put my phone down on my charger for the night it will turn off my tv and my lights. How can I do this? I have looked around the app NFC Tools and I don't see any smart home control stuff. Is there another app that does? Is what I want to do possible? It seems pretty simple. My stuff is in the Google ecosystem

Connecting a Smart Switch to a Smart light

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:52 PM PST

I'm sorry if my question was asked before.

I have a smart bulb (Merkury, WiFi) hooked up to a regular plug (plug A) . The lamp is always turned on and I turn the light on or off using either Voice commands or mobile app.

    I have a normal light switch that turns on/off a plug (plug B) .

I want to replace the normal switch with a smart switch (Merkury Dimmer, WiFi) so I can control my smart light with a switch.

    Is this possible?

I have nothing plugged in plug B which is linked to the switch.

I hope my explanation was clear enough.

Leviton Z Wave Dimmer Programming Mode SNAFU

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:09 PM PST

Had a Leviton Z wave dimmer (DZ6HD) that had been setup with my smarrthings hub for about a year. Recently updated my wifi password and for some reason the hub could no longer control the switch. I deleted it from the hub and am trying to pair it with hub again, but it doesn't seem to enter the programming mode. I press the top of the paddle for 7 seconds and the amber light shines, then I tap the paddle one time and it begins to rapidly flash green, before quickly stopping and flashing red 3 times and then the LED goes off. Any suggestions on how to get it to enter/stay in programming mode so I can get it to connect to the hub again?

Recommendations for Kasa Smart Switch faceplate options for lack of depth?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 09:53 PM PST

I just installed some Kasa smart switches and I don't have enough space to fit the whole thing in the box, so it protrudes out, about an inch or so. Are there any deep screwless faceplates you know of that would fit the Kasa or other options?

    Smart battery lightswitch

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 09:49 PM PST

My house has a room with no lightswitch so I started with one that I found that wasn't smart just was basically a remote that control a plug. I have since switched it to a smartplug to go with alexa control (I also have ring) and of course my husband mounted the old remote (which looked like a lightswitch) so if I take it down I will have holes to repair. I would love a relatively cheap smart button/lightswitch that is battery operated to replace it with as there is no power here but can't find anything like it. Is there something I'm missing?

Dumb motion detect switch with smart bulb

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:20 PM PST

So this combination does not seem to work for me. I have a motion switch from the previous owners that is blocked by my fridge when washing dishes. All the time the lights turn off while washing so I was hoping to put in a smart bulb I could turn on by voice when the motion sensor shut off. Its not currently working though it seems as the light won't turn on if the switch is "off" due to no motion. Is this the way it should work? Thanks.

Colored bookshelf spotlights for Hue Sync Play

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 03:16 AM PST

I'm looking for some bookshelf spotlights (like the IKEA vaxmyra/omlopp, that just stick to the top), but with colors that would connect and play nicely with the Hue Sync Play setup on my tv. Any ideas?

Dumb switches that "feel" like Zooz/Inovelli

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 02:04 PM PST

I'm slowly replacing switches in my house with smart switches. Trying to maintain a consistent visual of paddle-style switches everywhere. On the smart switches, the paddle clicks down and then springs back up. Of course on your typical paddle switch the paddle stays where you put it. Is there a brand of dumb switch that behaves the same way as the smart switch, where it clicks down and then back up?

    Door/window sensors

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:38 PM PST

I'm looking to get some more open/close sensors throughout my house, and I've seen that Samsung no longer sells the SmartThings sensors. I want to use these to send an alert when doors are left open too long (gotta train the kids!), and not really for security at all. I currently have one sensor on my pantry that announces over Alexa when someone tries to sneak snacks in the middle of the night, and reminds the kids to close the pantry door if they leave it open too long. I haven't really found a good way to set up to alert if it's open for beyond a specific duration of time, so it just goes off ten minutes after the pantry is opened. I'd also like suggestions on how to only alert if the pantry is left open for a specific time, because I want to set something similar up on my exit doors.

TLDR I need recommendations for open/close sensors and advice on how to automate them.

    Logitech Harmony Replacement

With nothing but issues with Harmony and their sluggish software, I am looking to move to a different platform. I don't control much. I just have a home theater setup I control. Is there a different device that would integrate with Google Assistant and work better?

How do I automatically reboot my router when the internet goes out?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 03:45 PM PST

We sometimes have to unplug and restart our router to get the internet working again. It's a pain, but if we are home it only takes a few minutes. We were out of town for a few days when it went out again and we couldn't get feed from our cameras, doorbell, door lock, thermostat, protect, etc. Neighbors didn't answer texts so we came home early with fears of a fire or tree through the house. Turned out the router needed rebooting again.

Is there a device that we can use as a plugin power switch that will automatically cycling the power if it doesn't have internet connectivity for a few minutes? If not, can I make something to do this or another work around?

    sub-zero chest freezer temperature monitoring

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:29 PM PST

    sub-zero chest freezer temperature monitoring

I got a chest freezer recently, and planned to put it in the basement. Since it's not used frequently, I wanted to keep track of the temperature and send myself a notification in case the freezer breaks down and I need to save the food.

I have zigbee temperature sensors that are small and use CR2032 coin cells. They'll work for a little while, but freezing temperatures may not be best for coin cell battery performance and might necessitate frequent battery changes. I came across these Govee brand Bluetooth temperature sensors that use a pair of AAA batteries.

    Temperature sensor for chest freezer

bluetooth sensor w/ display (tracks max/min)

They're on sale regularly. The manufacturer provides mobile app to save the temperature data, but it's got the typical creepy permissions and isn't very useful for this scenario. I already have some Pi's doing other gateway duties, so added a python script to read the bluetooth advertisements from the sensor, decode the sensor data, and publish it to MQTT broker. The data encoding was worked out by a previous Govee project. Once I have the data coming in via MQTT, I can visualize it with InfluxDB/Grafana and email notification via Node-Red.

    Chest Freezer temperature in Grafana

Here's the github link for the python script.

My pi gateway is one floor up and one room over, and I'm getting on average 3 out of 5 advertisements.

Is there a wifi enabled digital photo frame out there, you could give as a gift to grandparents (for example) and remotely update photos ?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 09:49 AM PST

About 20 years ago i had one but they shut down the cloud service, thus making it a simple sd card enabled digital photo Frame. I can't remember the make.

Im wondering if anything exists now, im sure a Google home hub could be setup to do this, but is there a cheaper less overkill way?

Help me pick out some products! Switches / lights

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:06 PM PST

Hello everyone! Would love some suggestions on what to get.

Looking to automate my heater, and be able to activate it through google assistant. Also need a splitter for the same outlet for my Chromecast.

    https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07M6RS2LC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabt1_dlC_zzdXFb8PFA5CX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Thinking of something like this, basically want to be able to tell google to turn it on, or set it to turn on at a certain time.

Also, trying to find a good light bulb product, but idk what to go for. Ideally I want a high-lumen hue bulb that I can use assistant with to change colors, turn on, or set to turn on with my alarm. But I'm finding hue lights to have generally low lumens. The highest I've seen is LIFX probably. Otherwise, thinking of getting a switch for the same lamp and getting a regular light. But ideally I want it to be dimmable or change from cool/warm. Any setup recommendations or product recommendations from Amazon.ca?

Smart Smoke/CO2 detector - One that I can "temporarily disable" (SmartThings)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 12:29 PM PST

    Hey All,

I am looking to replace my smoke/CO2 detectors, and I want something on the smart side. On top of that, I need something that I can "Shut Off". I do a lot of high heat cooking and baking, which keeps setting off my current equipment, and my current equipment does not allow me to press a button to stop them.

So with that, I want a system where I can say "Stop", maybe even for X amount of time or something, so I can stop the smoke portion while I finish cooking my stuff.

I looked at the Nest options but I am looking for people's personal opinion, experiences, and feedback.

Sylvania Zigbee bulbs - any reviews?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 02:47 PM PST

I have a zigbee setup, and I came across these bulbs on amazon:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0197840KQ/ref=emc_b_5_t

They seem to be full colour zigbee, and a lot cheaper than what Philips Hue or even IKEA can offer. The problem is, I can't find much information or any reviews. Are they any good? Any gotchas?
