Replacing Low Voltage Smart Thermostat for Hydronic Heated Floors

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 04:23 PM PST

I am looking to replace my low voltage non-programmable thermostat for my heated floors. The floors are supplied with hot water from a water heater and there is a floor sensor that is connected to the thermostat.

I am looking for a smart, programmable, wifi thermostat that is low voltage, but am struggling to come together with some options.

I found this sinope one, which seems okay, but is not available yet.

There other option was using a nest thermostat without the floor sensor, and using the True Radiant mode.

Has anyone else done something similar and have any recommendations?

    Thanks

Anyone have an Amarey A800/900/980 and recommend it?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:06 PM PST

See title; pretty straightforward. Low numbers of reviews and looking for any kind of assurance it's even remotely competitive in the budget robotic vacuum space.

Probably will just give it a shot regardless at $112 and Free Return eligible, but I'm intrigued to hear people's thoughts.

Herschel iq Hub heating control - anyone?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 07:15 PM PST

    https://www.theecostore.co.uk/eco-store/herschel-iq-hub/

I have recently bought Herschel IR Panels with the iq hub. Can't see any mention of someone connecting them to a home automation solution. It's looking like I'll go with Homebridge based on other things I already have.

Has anyone here integrated with the Herschel iq gear before?

    SmartThings vs Hubitat

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:16 PM PST

I'm looking into getting a hub and am not sure which way to go. I just kitted my whole house with the Philips Wiz smart bulbs. And it seems like both hubs support these bulbs (SmartThings natively and Hubitat via community made drivers).

However SmartThings is not in stock new anywhere, though I could pick it up used locally. Whereas Hubitat is purchasable new right now.

The only automation I've really thought of is turning lights on automatically after sunset when we come home or if we're already home. I have a Nest thermostat, which I was thinking of leveraging as a home/away sensor, but it doesn't seem like Nest integrates well with hubs, right?

Is the ease of use worth it to jump into SmartThings? I'm a Software Engineer so I'm not too scared of something a little more technical, which is what I've heard of Hubitat, but I also don't want to be wrestling with my home automation. It's supposed to make life easier, right? :)

I've already ruled out Home Assistant because you have to pay for Google Assistant / Alexa support. And sorry /u/kigmatzomat I've already ruled out Homeseer, because it doesn't seem like they have support for Wiz bulbs.

How to link MyQ to Google Assistant/Home?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 02:17 PM PST

Got in on the Amazon Lightning Deal yesterday for the MyQ garage door hub. Got it working no problem with the MyQ app but cannot figure out how to link it to Google for the life of me. I have activated the free subscription. The MyQ instructions say to click on the "compass" button in the Google Assistant app, but I don't have that button (Pixel 3, Android 11). If I try to add in Google Home, there is no device or service called MyQ. Any suggestions?

Smart vent sync with heat/cool modes

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:24 PM PST

Ok, I know there are tons of threads about smart vents. I've read all I could. I understand they are generally not recommended.

However, I have an office with two gaming PCs and a server, and bottom line, I can't have any heat enter the room.

In Texas, we have two seasons (or 3) with cold enough nights to warrant heat, and hot enough days to warrant A/C. And during these months, I'm constantly opening and closing the vent in my office to allow the cool air when the A/C is on, and closing it to not allow heat.

That being said, I only ever hear about temperature sensors and the like regarding smart vents. I don't give two flips about what the temperature is in the room. I just want an automated way to close the vent when the system is in "heat" mode.

Do any smart vents on the market operate based solely on what mode the system is in? I don't want to deal with extra temperature sensors if I can avoid it. I just want a simple "on/off" style operation for one vent in the house.

    Any suggestions?

    Smart doorbell recommendations

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:11 AM PST

Hi All! first time poster here. Need some guidance as I'm new at all of this.

I'm looking to get a smart doorbell. Upon reading more about the differences between them all, I found myself a bit overwhelmed. I also found this community and all the home automation systems out there. So, I'd like to set myself up for the future with infrastructure. Currently I'm renting so I'm not going to do much yet for home automation, but eventually I will buy a house and eventually eventually I will build another house where I'll explore all this more.

All that to say, I'm ok with getting a doorbell that doesn't exactly fit everything I'm looking for, but want to be informed. Things I'm looking for

    1. No-subscription services
    2. Private and secure
    3. local storage
    4. long battery life (because renting)
    5. an American brand

Things that would be nice but not necessarily needed yet

    1. ability to store data on a home server somehow (I have yet to design and make a home server)
    2. Integration with home automation systems (Still learning about all of these and their differences)

Does anyone have any recommendations? I've poured over so many details I need a bit of help :)

    Thanks!

    Is Roombe i7 old already?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 07:30 PM PST

As I was looking to buy a high end robot vacuum these days, I started thinking about the age of the Roomba i7. It's almost two years old now.

I was thinking, is there a chance iRobot refreshes their Roomba line with new models any time soon? Or should I go ahead and pull the trigger, knowing that my device will remain the latest, top of the line model for a while more?

    Broadlink TC3 switches

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 07:24 PM PST

just trying to understand the way this work before i order it

the WIFI feature isnt built in in the actual switch ?

the switch basically works on and off by RF signal coming from the RM pro unit ?

so this means i will need RM Pro units near the switch in order to control it through the app ?

Robot vacuum that can be controlled like a drone?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:44 PM PST

Just like the title says I am looking for a robot vacuum that I can control manually like a drone or RC car. I just bought a Roomba i3+ and it does a decent enough job but its automation still misses spots. I'd much rather have one that I can control manually via an app so it goes where i tell it to. Does such a thing exist?

    Flic and Meross

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:37 PM PST

So Ive just ordered the new flic 2 black with a hub. I've got hue bulbs all over my house, meross plugs for my bedside lamps, a Samsung TV and Google mini's and Amazon echo dots in every room

One thing I was wanting to do is have a flic button next to the bed to have one press toggle the bedside meross plug for the lamp, double press to toggle the hue bulb in that room and then hold down to turn absolutely everything in the house off.

I have found the toggle for hue and that side of thing is working. I however can't seem to find anything for meross at all. I was thinking about making routines and linking them but I can't figure it out.

I do have ifttt pro if that will help but to be honest I don't really use it as it confuses the hell out of me. One thing as well would be awesome if I could also change my status in ring to activate my different ring home statues when I go to bed! (I.e. turn on motion notifications in the back garden while I sleep)

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

    Linking Circuits With Smart Switches

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:32 PM PST

Long story short, there are 4 lights in my kitchen each on their own circuit with their own switch. I'm wondering if it's possible to link these all into one with smart switches. Basically I want the buttons on any one of these 4 switches to also control the other 3. What hardware is best to accomplish this task?

How to instrument sump pump switches?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:54 AM PST

I have a fairly simple use case - a sump pump float switch which are normally open. There are 3 float switches connected to a logic board that will trigger different actions (start pump, stop pump, and a 3rd switch which is higher than everything else- indicating the pump is not working, and the water is still coming up). I'd like to instrument these to send alerts through IFTTT (pump started, pump stopped, pump not working). The sensors are low voltage which drives a relay powering the pump.

I'm not a developer so I'm looking for something easy/off the shelf as possible. Any suggestions on where I should start? I have alexa, insteon, smartthings/samsung already.

myQ messing with my August lock?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 10:31 AM PST

I've been using myQ for my garage door along with anew August smart lock on my front door for a few months now without issue. in the past few weeks my lock has started getting confused at seemingly random times, thinking it's open/unlocked or has been opened when it has not. recalibrations work for a little while but the problem reappears. i was starting to get very mad with August, but in the past few days i've noticed it now happens precisely when the garage door is activated. the two units are pretty close, less than ten feet apart with one wall in between them.

has anyone else experienced anything like this? i'm past thinking it's an incredible coincidence as it has become consistent, but never say never. any possible remedies for preventing this?

    Automating outdoor heat mats

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 12:33 PM PST

I ordered some heat mats today to keep ice from forming on the steps into my hot tub and the deck around it. I plan to automate these mats with an outdoor WiFi switch. I use Home Assistant but my question isn't really dependent on that. I currently don't have a way to monitor if my hot tub is in use. I figure that I can set up an automation to turn on the mats when it starts snowing to keep the snow clear. Is anyone doing something similar? What other ways are you automating the mats to come on? Any other ideas? I am concerned about the steps getting icy after people get out and drip water.

TP LINK 3 way switch keeps switching to off?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:52 PM PST

I just installed a few more smart switches in our house. One of the lights is controlled by a 3 way switch, though this 3 way switch is the only switch that controls this light (kitchen light). Every time I turn the light on or off, it works, but both the KASA app and Google Home app show that it switches back to 'off' (but the light stays on). I can click it on the app or push the physical button to 'turn it back on' and it turns the light off, will show on in the app temporarily and then go back to 'off'. Should I remove one of the wires from the 3 way and just use a single pole? I'm not sure why it's doing this!

    Outdoor 20amp Z-Wave Receptacle

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:42 PM PST

I need to replace an outdoor GFI (120V) receptacle. My wife (Mrs. Griswald) burned up the 15AMP receptacle that was there with excessive lights (one of 3 receptacles on a 20AMP breaker). So I'm going to replace with a 20AMP receptacle to match the breaker, but I was curious if anyone knows of a quality, 20A outdoor GFI receptacle that's Z-Wave-capable?

EDIT: I did some more research; I think the idea of z-wave GFCI is contradictory. If I understand GFCI correct (I am not an electrician), the point is to completely cut the power when it trips. Z-Wave, needs a constant power source, so it's probably a violation of code, and maybe a material fire risk, even if this is possible. I'm going to replace with a standard 20A outdoor GFCI receptacle then get an Outdoor Z-Wave extension/whip for the holiday lights. Definitely love to hear everyone's thoughts though if I'm wrong...

Google nest mini or echo dot?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:22 PM PST

I am conflicted on which one to get as I use google applications such as google calendar and google keep which means the nest would be better for obvious reasons. But there are some appealing things about the echo dot especially the led clock and apps like google calendar are still compatible with the echo dot. I also have apple devices and I have heard that google nest works better with android. It also seems that the echo dot is more popular in general. Another thing is that alexa is a lot easier to say that hey google especially when you are tired in the morning.

    Any advice?
