Tuya Blinds switch not working via Google Home anymore

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 12:14 AM PST

    Goodmorning,

My dad has been using a Tuya switch for his blinds flawlessly for the past couple months. Last week or two weeks ago the Smart Life app pushed a notification that everyone had to refresh their devices. Ever since then, the Tuya socket switches still work, but the blinds stopped working, partially:

    - Blinds Switch works perfectly in the Smart Life app

    - Blinds Switch shows in the Google Home app, assigned to correct room, but doesn't have any controls. I have to admit that I don't know if the Blinds switch was ever controllable via the Google Home app.

    - When asking Google Home devices or Google Assistant, it responds with "Okay, I will close the blinds" but nothing happens.

    I've tried:

    - Saying "sync devices"

    - Re-linking the Smart Life app to Google Home

My last resort would be re-pairing the switch to the Smart Life app, but I want to postpone this as far as possible because the switch is built into the wall and the pairing button is at the back of the switch.

New home construction - no idea on what to ask the subs to be prepared for future home automation

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:56 PM PST

I hope it's ok to ask questions here, if not please let me know where it would be ok.

I am building a new custom home myself as owner builder, I know "construction stuff" and I know I'd like to have a basic level of smart home in the future, but I don't know what to ask my subs (electric, HVAC etc) to be prepared for this. The wiki honestly is a bit too DIY for me.

I am embarrassed to say I work in software engineering (construction is a side gig, weird combination I know) but in the corporate world and I never learned any home automation stuff. I honestly would like more out of the box solutions like from google or other established players, preferably without subscriptions if possible, and not so much programming as I get enough of that in my day job.

The level of home automation/smart home I want to achieve eventually is to be able to control HVAC and lights mostly, and maybe check security cameras/other sensors and for lights to dim/change colors with those smart bulbs. I don't need it to learn stuff, I want to mostly control it myself from a PC or phone.

Again, what should I be doing in construction to prepare for this, and are there any out of the box solutions that don't require too much tinkering for my needs?

Need Help: Doorbell + Electric Strike

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:55 PM PST

I am trying to replace an existing (but broken and old) Nutone Scovil that was installed in the early/mid 80s. The options out there seem oddly limited, or at least I'm looking in the wrong places.

What I have: 16VAC supply to inside station (I can swap this for anything), 5 Wire out to Door Bell next to gate, Electric Strike on a Gate. They're about 50 ft away from each other through wire. The home's wiring is nearly impossible to access without some significant work.

What I want minimum: Door Bell button. Answer/hang up feature from inside and ability to enable the electric strike (on a timer?). A reputable company. Price tag under $600.

What I would like, but not necessary: Wired Video and camera with a 5-7" monitor station. Keypad for entry.

What's not interesting to me: anything connected to the Internet, I really mean this to be a local/wired network. Wireless is alright, but if my wifi is down, It would be irritating to me to not be able to answer my door. No subscriptions. No batteries.

My last resort is just making this myself with a Pi... But that'll take me some time I don't necessarily have.

I'm open to suggestions, so thank you for your time.

    Double light switch automation

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:41 PM PST

Hey everyone, I currently have a light switch in this style, 1 light 1 ceiling fan. Almost everything I've found for wifi controlled switches are just for lights or have some sort of dimming feature. What smart switch can I replace this type of switch with that will let me turn the light and fan on and off separately with Google Home

We have a surety system at our house, are there any semi smart locks out there that notify if the door has been left unlocked?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:33 PM PST

    Hey All,
I seem to randomly forget locking the door when I enter my house, and occasional when I leave it. We have a Surety system set up at our place and I wanted to know if there were any smart locks out there that just notify if the door has been left unlocked. We live in an older house and the deadbolt that's currently installed doesn't always line up with the the door jam when the door is closed, so I don't really want to have an automatic lock trying to lock while the door is not in the correct position.
Also would really love it if the door lock didn't look like a smart lock from the outside so as not to draw attention.
    Any ideas?

I haven't been able to connect my Chamberlain to the MyQ app. Any ideas?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:17 PM PST

Every time I try and connect to the app, for a split second the app connects and then immediately says failed to connect. And this repeats this process over and over again. I haven't been able to successfully connect to the app to this point. Is there a way to use another app to instead control the garage door instead of MyQ? Or has anyone experienced this issue too?

Harmony Skill in Alexa partially stopped

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 03:30 PM PST

Have been using Alexa to control my Harmony Hub...it works great to say "Alexa, turn on the TV", and it triggers the Harmony skill labeled TV, which turns on the TV, the receiver, sets it to the correct input, etc.

Recently, "turn on the TV" stopped working, even though alternate phrases for other "friendly names" for that skill STILL WORK. For example, "turn on the Hopper" is an alternate name for the TV skill. "Turn on Hopper" works, even though "turn on TV" does not.

The other trigger phrases such as "turn on blu-ray" or "turn on AppleTV" all still work as well. It just will no longer do anything when I say "turn on TV".

I've disabled and re-enabled the Harmony skill from the Alexa app to try to fix it. I've created an alternate name for the skill called "tee vee". Nothing.

    Any thoughts?

How to have a sensor to detect an analog signal and report it to IFTTT

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:26 PM PST

    Team,
sorry to bother I cannot find a solution:

Here is my challenge: I have 2 sources

    1. is a magnetic contact open/close - is already wired in the house and in the different doors and windows. it is passive, 2 wires only and is closed when magnet near sensor and opened in any other case
    2. I have the output from a device that is 0V when powered off and 10V when on.

In both cases I'd love to have a sensor that raises a signal to IFTTT over wifi for it to take actions. But I was not able to find anything in this space.
Ideal would be for it to be battery powered so it's easier to maintain but I can even have it 220V powered.

    Any idea or suggestion?

    Thank you,

    M

Recommendation for Z-Wave Dimmer with no neutral wire? (re: LEDs, Zooz switches)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:12 PM PST

    I've just purchased a bunch (5x ZEN27, 3x ZEN21) but I didn't properly inspect one of existing switches I plan to replace.

The existing switch box has no neutral wire. (it has two other 3-way switches, but Zooz support confirmed neither has a neutral wire available in this box)

Are there any Z-Wave switches (preferably with dimmer) that works with LED lights AND doesn't require a neutral wire?

The switch I'm hoping to replace controls a kitchen table chandelier light (5x bulbs, using LEDs right now).

I believe the existing switch is wired to have power at the fixture. (ie. the existing switch has black and white wires attached to the terminals)

Cellular/LTE fallback for home automation devices; best/cheapest approach?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 12:47 PM PST

I'd like to have a fallback for my home automation devices. I know there are specialty routers that take sim cards, but those all seem very expensive.

Are others doing this? Could I use a cheap mobile hotspot or phone?

    Thanks!

Screw in chrome cast or airplay speaker or outdoor audio via cast receiver

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:44 AM PST

I'm looking for a speaker I can screw in with a bulb socket (or an all in one device) for my front porch light does something like this exist? I currently have a Sengled Bluetooth bulb that works but the setup is kliudgy and not particularly reliable. I have to turn it on from my Insteon switch, wait for it to connect to my mini via Bluetooth then cast. Ideally the bulb could be controlled via wifi and I could just leave the mains on all the time.

The other solution would be to mount an outdoor speaker that's wired to some sort of casting receiver or do diy something. I know I could do it with a Pi w/ amp and have a B+ bit it seems silly to need a dedicated Linux board to accomplish something I could do in firmware. Was thinking of finding a chromecast audio too if I go this route but not sure how long those will be supported

Replace indicator light with smart notification

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:19 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm wondering if the following is possible. I have dual energy heating in my house, meaning when the temperature drops under -15C, the furnace switches to oil instead of electrical. There is a small indicator light (12v I think) on my wall that switches on when that happens. I was wondering it if would be possible to replace that light with some kind of smart device that can connect to wifi and let me know through google home or something.

I don't even know how that would be called so I don't know if they sell something for that.

    Thanks in advance!

Google Home Issues since this new update!

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:11 AM PST

Ever since this update this morning my home has been a little confused with my switches. Says they are not there yet, end she still controls them. However the main issue is she will not control my nest thermostat at all. I say "set thermostat to... " eco, or comfort, or whatever. She responds with "sorry I don't understand" or just tells me the current mode my thermostat is already in.

Any fixes? one guy said he went through every one of his routines and clicked a random thing on and off and that fixed his thermostat. I just finished trying that and did not work for me. So I'm open for other ideas.

So far what I've done is restart the thermostat, factory reset the thermostat, and the thing mentioned above.

    Thank you.

Inspiration and Showcases for Home Automation

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:21 AM PST

I'm really struggling to imagine what I can/should do with home automation. I have a background in software/electrical engineering, spare time, and money to keep me busy with projects around the house.

I have home assistant up and running and it seems like great software with a bunch of possibilities.

This all started to get a notification on our phones if a garage door is left open, opengaragedoor fit the bill here.

I have installed dozens of hue bulbs around my house but now a little stuck on what I should do with switches, motion detection, etc.

I wired in my solar panels and battery and have started to explore a web scraper to overlay my consumption according to my power provider.

I'm just really looking around trying to figure out what my roadmap for home automation should look like. Where do you all go to for ideas on projects and get some inspiration?

    Lights and audio

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:45 AM PST

Im planning on buying a new house and i want in ceiling speakers hooked up something like the sonos amp, im planning on about 6 independent zone, is there anyway to do that without emptying my bank account? Is there an alternative to essentially 6 sonos amps?

Secondly i want to implement smart lighting, the only options i found were to go all out for phillips hue or rely on chinese botnet stuff like yeelight or alternatively sonos switches which might burn my house down. Can anyone who knows about smartphone stuff help me?

    Automate wireless light switches

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:34 AM PST

    Hello,

I just purchased a house (Switzerland) and have started digging into the electrical system.

Some of the lights are wired to the switches, however quite a lot of them are wirelessly connected (see attached picture what is behind the wireless switches)

    https://imgur.com/a/BfCJcO5

Any way to automate this using z-wave (what I am most familiar with)? I have not yet built any system just trying to plan

    Thanks for your input!

Smart Lightbulb Recommendation: Self-stored dimming schedule that can survive power cycles

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 02:43 AM PST

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a smart lightbulb that will work in the following way:

    • I need it to cycle between brighter and dimmer daily (say, bright from 9 AM to 9 PM, dim for the rest)
    • Schedule must be able to operate independently without network connection. Initial network-connected setup is OK, but schedule must then be stored within the unit.
    • Must be able to be switched off (ie. withstand AC power loss with schedule intact), so I guess that means it needs it's own real time clock with on-board RTC battery.

I know this is probably a lot to ask, but if anyone knows of such a device, please let me know. Thanks.
