Homeseer account not linking to Google Home App

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 06:26 PM PST

I have been unable to link my homeseer account in the google home app. I can get to the point where I enter my login information. It then says it's linking the homeseer account but then goes back to the setup a device page.

I have tried repeatedly to make it work. In the homeseer account I have turned off voice activation for all devices. Anyone have any other ideas of what to do? TIA

Stay away from wyze product scammers

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 12:19 AM PST

This company is a complete and total joke. I won't go into the details here on reddit but feel free to read my latest post on their forums.

    https://forums.wyzecam.com/t/i-want-a-refund-too/148881

The products are junk and don't work worth a crap. The support lines are completely useless. Good luck getting a refund, canceling an order, or even getting anyone from their company to respond to you.

They have no intentions of creating an API for enthusiasts to use. I 100% feel as though this is a quick cash grab on a bunch of junk product that will no longer have any support in the coming months if there ever was any to begin with.

(Some) Generic Chinese smart devices work better than name brands. Anyone else have this experience?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 03:23 AM PST

Ok so my family started to get into the smart home thing about a year ago and purchased some C by GE lights and some generic "Jetstream" lights for other rooms. The C by GE worked fine for a while but all the sudden all the C by GE disconnected out of nowhere and it was a clusterfuck and we couldn't reconnect.

So we ditched the C by GE and replaced those rooms with Sengled and we bought a Sengled switch for the hallway. Well, everything seemed to be working for a while until one day one of our Sengled lights kept flashing and constantly changing temperatures even after we would turn it off (through the software). Ok, time to move on from Sengled. Bought some more Chinese lights, don't remember the brand, but it was at this point I realize that all the Chinese lights used the same exactly software and my lights worked in the Jetstream app even though they weren't JetStream.

Ok. Another month goes by. My Sengled switch randomly dies. Returned.

All this time though the only devices that never had a problem were the jet stream lights, some Gosund smart plugs (which I didn't really mention in this post). And the other Chinese lights.

Did I just buy shitty name brands or had anyone else had this experience?

Smart wall switch which can control non-switched outlets. Does this exist?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 10:03 PM PST

My bedroom has two sets of outlets, only one of which is switched. I'd like them both to work off a single wall switch without having to rewire the outlets. Is there a smart outlet/wall switch combo that would do this for me? I see smart outlets that you can control with your phone or a smart hub, but is there a wall switch solution?

    Another robot vacuum question post

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 09:42 PM PST

I'm sure there have been many posts asking these questions, and from what I've seen currently, lidar robot vacuums are in the lead atm. But I have a few questions.

My wife gets some work perks as points that she can redeem for things. Shes gotten enough points to get one of these robot vacuums for free:

Here they are in order of most points to least 'costly'

    • iRobot Roomba i7+ 7750 WiFi connected with automatic dirt disposal
    • Neato Botvac D6
    • iRobot e5 5150 WiFi connected WITH 380T floor mopping robot
    • iRobot Roomba i3+ WiFi connected with automatic dirt disposal
    • Neato Botvac D4

So I suppose it comes down the i7+, D6 or the E5 with 380t

    Our considerations:

    • We've got hardwood floors throughout the house except the kitchen which is tiles.
    • house has two floors. Main floor is living room/dining room and kitchen, open concept. 3 bedrooms upstairs.
    • I'll likely be running the robot vacuum everyday and manually moving it from one floor to the other.
    • we foster cats so there is a lot of pet fur throughout the house constantly. This includes below the bed. The bed has a bed skirt.
    • we don't care about the automatic emptying options. I'll empty on a daily basis if I have to. It's a nice to have, but not a deal breaker.

Considering all those options. I'm not sure what to go with and would appreciate any suggestions.

    Flood prevention - leak sensors/auto-valve

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 08:50 PM PST

I recently had a pipe break in an upstairs bathroom which caused some pretty terrible damage and lots of stress. I was hoping to ask the group if anyone had a good/affordable solution..

I was thinking something that had wireless water sensors next to sinks, toilets, washers, hot-water heater, etc that could tell a valve to shut off..

It would be cool to link it to my home system (indigo).

Landscape lights in the snow. Low voltage step lights and color washers, the latter buried in the snow! Used the ring transformer. Pretty happy with it (already had ring doorbells), though the automation needs lots of work. And I can’t trigger them from ST yet.

    Garage Door Opener Automation

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 04:35 PM PST

To begin— I do not have a garage—

Like most vehicles, my car has a garage door transmitter in the rear-view mirror. I'm a HomeKit user, with a solid addition through HomeBridge. I'd love to find some type of receiver for the transmitter in the car.

For example, if I press the garage door button on my car mirror, a signal would be transmitted to a receiver in my house, triggering my front door to unlock and my porch light to turn on.

Any insight into how I could accomplish this?

    Deck Lighting Ideas

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 11:12 AM PST

I'm building a deck and I am trying to think of some cool LED lighting effects that I could implement. I was thinking about some strip lights along the bottom rails aimed downward, or maybe at a 45 degree angle (towards the deck area of course). I'm also thinking about some LED sconces on the posts. I was imagining that when my football team scores a touchdown, I could flash the lights in my team colors. Anyway, I think I can handle the programming and animations, but I'm more interested in physical mountings and the LED options out there. I'm even ok with 3D printing some sconces if it comes to that. Just looking for some "bright" ideas! :)

Can we Intergrate with different protocols?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 07:29 PM PST

I have been researching about protocols and would like to use Zigbee as the main protocol for my home automation with a Respberry Pi + Conbee + HA . However could anyone clarify my confusion ? .

    1. Can we use zigbee, zwave and wifi in one hub? .
    2. What does MQTT do? . Is it enable us to connect devices that uses wifi protocol into our hub?
    3. what does zigbee2mqtt? , i searched on google and youtube but couldn't find the definition of it correctly
    4. How do we make the network wider?

I'm planning on using 3 type of brand in my home automation which is AQARA , SONOFF and TUYA . They all support zigbee and i think it should work to intergrate all of them using zigbee ecosystem.
Your opinion is much appreaciated .

How To Automate Your Home Because Apparently Switches Are Too Hard You Lazy Fuck – Nerfwire

    Where to place water detectors?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 12:12 PM PST

I recently ordered a set of 3 water detectors and I was looking for clever ideas on where to place them. I'm definitely putting one in the closet with my washer/dryer stack, but where for the other two? I was thinking under the kitchen sink, but that wouldn't capture a leak from the dishwasher (but I don't want it just sitting on the kitchen floor in front of the washer obviously). And then I was going to put one in my utility closet with my water heater, but there is a drain in there so there shouldn't be any issues unless the drain backs up...

Basic home camera monitoring question, max 4 cams, wifi, no storage needed, just monitoring, budget friendly?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 09:51 AM PST

Pretty simple question and I hope this is the right forum to ask / post... I just need some cameras to monitor inside and outside a house that I can access via App or Web interface. It's mainly going to be used to keep track of my elderly father and to make sure he is okay and not fallen down. Any cheap suggestions that fit the description in the title or any other recommendations are welcome... Thank you.

Can anyone recommend some good POE cameras?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 08:00 AM PST

I've got some old Foscam POE cameras and quite frankly I don't like them. They record to a Synology NAS which I like but they're not reliable. Sometimes they don't record anything at all for days and days. Most days they can't even track what their time is supposed to be accurately. Sometimes they just go offline for days at a time and I get no notifications.

My neighbor just had their house broken into and wanted to know if my cameras caught anything. Unfortunately the one facing their house just wasn't working at the time for some reason.

I'm wanting a reliable POE camera that can record to a local NAS. This is really all I'm asking for. Most of the stuff seems to be geared to cloud recordings.

Edit: It's a Synology Nas these are hooked up to and I've just been using their Surveillance Station software. It's not the most elegant thing but it works.

Is there any way to control 2 lights with 1 smart twin switch independently if there's only wiring for 1 light and a single switch?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 09:11 AM PST

Hi! I don't know if a similar question has been posted before. But I'm trying to figure out a solution to the following problem:

    • 1 single light switch (with wiring for only 1 single light switch) that controls my kitchen light
    • the kitchen light also has only wiring to connect 1 light
    • I need to add another light for our dining table.
    • I guess that means I would probably have to connect this dining table light in one series with the kitchen light (so that these would share 1 terminal block)?
    • Is there any way a twin smart switch could help me control both lights independently? Let's consider using a smart switch and any smart lightbulbs

Many thanks for your help & input!

    Remote Garage Door Opener?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 07:32 AM PST

I currently have DigitalLife and other than opening my garage door, the service is pretty useless to me. I'm looking for a substitute that will allow me to replace their system and $37.15 a month.

I have a Genie garage door opener and I found their Aladdin wifi attachment. However, I do not want to add a plug to my wall just to get the opener to work. I see that they're having a sale so my thoughts are that they coming out with a new model, but I'm not sure when.

Chamberlain has MyQ that is cheaper and compatible that might be worth buying now.

If I could have it my way, I'd like an outdoor camera (will probably get Nest), a garage door opener I can open via an app on my phone, window break sensors, and CO2 sensors (will probably get Nest).

Are their any other options for me?

Does anyone sell a WIFI Light Toggle (not rocker, button, slider, dimmer, etc).

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 05:07 AM PST

Because of the mechanical action of standard toggle switches, most "smart" switches use a button / rocker approach. This makes it easier for them because when you change the position from your phone the switch on the wall doesn't need to change position.

Does anyone sell a wifi-enabled switch that adopts the standard light switch design? I have a lot of multi-toggle (2-5 toggles on one plate) and I don't want to break them up or replace the entire series with wifi switches.

This is the closest I have found:

    https://smile.amazon.com/EVA-LOGIK-WIFI-oggle-Switch/dp/B07Q34S9JB?sa-no-redirect=1

Has anyone found anything that is even a closer match to the traditional toggles?

New Home Construction - Apple HomeKit or Control4/RTi?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 02:38 PM PST

I have been asked to help with a friends new home construction as far as the basics of some home automation. I'm eager to see opinions on whether I steer them down the road of a 25-40K CAD RTi or Control4 installation to handle it, or to take a more simple approach and choose hardware pieces that support Apple HomeKit and just manage everything through that. A couple of points to consider: a. These folks are very simple and are not the sort to 'tinker' with technology in any way so the system needs to be as hands off as possible. b. Their automation needs a fairly simple as well.. some lighting scenes, some blinds, garage door openers, nothing to bespoke or fancy.

The lighting system in the house is all Lutron RA2 controlling 24V lighting fixtures (a mistake for sure, but too late to rewire for line voltage at this point). In ceiling audio only specific speakers - approximately a dozen different zones. Home theatre room.

I know the lutron controls support homekit and that takes care of lighting and blinds. Going with a Sonos Amp for each basic audio zone and a receiver for the 5.1 or 11.1 zones that support homekit I think would take care of all the audio stuff. Choose the right doorbell - homekit, irrigation control - homekit, MyQ Garage openners - homekit.

Am I missing massive functionality that would be missing in an RTi or Control4 implementation? I would think the easy interface of Homekit from any phone, ipad or watch would outweigh some higher end automations that aren't possible in HomeKit.

Looking forward to thoughts from folks far more experienced than myself.
