Posted: 14 Dec 2020 07:19 PM PST I have two televisions. A smart socket works on an older Sharp TV. It turns the tv off and on. I also have a six year old Seiki TV. The smart socket will only turn the red power indicator on and off, but the tv will not turn on. Why the difference? [link] [comments]
What is the best smart light option for this scenario Posted: 14 Dec 2020 10:40 PM PST Hey so I have a ceiling fan that hosts 4 light bulbs on it and the fan and lights are controlled by a dimmer switch. I am looking to replace these 4 light bulbs with some high quality smart light bulbs (Yeelight or LifeX) but want to be sure it is safe to do so with the current dimmer switch. Should I just leave the dimmer switched maxed out and the lights will work? Or is this not a good idea and it might break the expensive bulbs? What other options do I have for this? I am not an electrician at all and am unable to hire one currently as I'm in quarantine. Not sure if it would make sense to just not use the ceiling fan lights altogether and host the smart bulbs on another platform altogether or should I somehow research and take out the current switch the lights are connected to right now. Would greatly appreciate anyone with experience in this help a brother out. Thank you! [link] [comments]
Alexa made an Energy Dashboard! Posted: 14 Dec 2020 10:33 PM PST On December 13, Amazon Alexa officially launched its latest feature: the Alexa Energy Dashboard. As the Alexa solution provider, we're delighted to be one of the first partners to integrate it into eWeLink Smart Home Skill. Now you can track down the energy use of power measurement devices e.g. Sonoff S31, Sonoff IW100 from the dashboard. In particular, the AI-powered Hunches feature will automatically turn off devices whenever Alexa "senses" that you don't need them to remain on. [link] [comments]
Any recommended Zwave/Zigbee Motion and Contact Sensors? Posted: 14 Dec 2020 09:57 PM PST My Wyze sensors are dying and I don't care to bother trying to fix them + the integration is down half the time, so I'm hoping to find some affordable motion and/or contact sensors. I doubt I'll find any that are $5/sensor like Wyze, but hoping to find options cheaper than the $20/sensor on Amazon. I have a Zigbee/Z-wave hybrid sensor, so either of those will work. Edit: Oh, yeah. I'm also looking for recommended leak sensors. [link] [comments]

Any thought on Google IQ Nest Cam (outdoor) being discontinued? Posted: 15 Dec 2020 12:36 AM PST I've only got one Nest camera (doorbell) but planned to add 2 or 3 Nest IQ outdoor cameras for yard coverage. Almost all Canadian retail is showing it a sold out and discontinued and I am seeing more shortage of Stock on US sites too. Given the height price of these units, I am hesitant to invest if these are on the way out. I have a few Wyze cameras I haven't installed, I have some outdoor cases, and noticed Wyze has just introduce Wyze outdoor. What do people here do for recording a archiving Wyze? My original interest in Nest was that given they recently changed their Nest aware subscription to a flat rate, storing 10-30 days of video in the cloud was practical. But maybe a local video storage solution makes more sense? Suggestions? Apologies I am new to the sub and to the options available for all this stuff. I am currently setting up HomeAssistant for monitoring, control, and integration of my mixed set Of devices, but had really hoped to start on camera installation with some free time over Christmas time. Event log button that can store data and send it later Posted: 14 Dec 2020 07:42 PM PST Are there any button devices that can store date/time data about button presses? I want to press a button to log events, such as the date/date when I drink water, but I don't want to have to have an always-on wireless connection. I would want to get the data later, maybe from an SD card or wirelessly with bluetooth or wifi. [link] [comments]
Fix for poor WiFi performance with AutoShades Posted: 14 Dec 2020 07:22 PM PST I was able to fix the WiFi issue with some WiFi antennas from Digi-Key on my AutoShades module. Here's a tutorial for anyone interested in fixing their shades. It's quite applicable to other ESP-32 based devices, though some already have a U.FL connector for the quick addition of an external antenna (you still generally need to swap a jumper around on the board, though). Hope this helps someone with similar issues! Backstory on AutoShades: I was very disappointed with the product I received from the Kickstarter I backed 1.5 years ago. WiFi performance was dreadful. The build quality is lacking, and the instructions are pretty vague. The hardware design, both mechanical and electrical, leave much to be desired. Software support is not there, either. And, to no one's surprise, the company is no longer producing them after this first run. [link] [comments]

Smart blinds, best option if you dont have anything Posted: 14 Dec 2020 12:14 PM PST So basically, I want smart blinds for my apartment, but the issue is that it has some pretty big windows and some small, for the small ones probably IKEA's would fit, but for the big ones they dont, and I dont want gaps (combining two). How would one approach this if they dont have any blinds yet - cost efficiently and conveniently? Should I buy traditional ones with beaded string and buy one of the adapters ( I hear they are slow and loud) Or should i buy one that works out of the box? My only requirement is HomeKit, though it can be hacky with HomeBridge or whatnot. Window dimensions for some of them are - 275 x 195, 195 x 195, 180 x 195 (w x h cm) [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Dec 2020 09:41 PM PST All I want is to make it so a key on my keyboard turns on and off a smart outlet located outside my room. I've seen all the posts about Home Assistant and Eventghost, but it's throwing me into a tizzy. Doing my own homework I come across Z-wave and TellStick and Homeseer and its too much for me to do on my own. I need help and I need simplicity. I would like as much detail AS POSSIBLE including what plug to buy, what adapter or transmitter to buy, what program to use, etc etc. Please, thank you, much appreciated. [link] [comments]
Xiaomi_aqura component on HA raspberry? Posted: 14 Dec 2020 08:40 PM PST Hi! Am I doing something wrong or is the xiaomi_aqura component isn't available on raspberry home assistant? I can only see xiaomi miio and xiaomi gateway (aqura) and while miio one works with my gateway by adding it via a key it doesn't add any of the sensors and the gateway (aqura) one needs an ip and I guess the open to lan setting which isn't achievable with my gateway as far as I know. Is there any solution for it or should I just pick up a conbee if I want to use my xiaomi sensors/button etc? The gateway and the sensors are from the xiaomi smart sensor set (EU). Thanks, sen [link] [comments]

Looking for a way to automatically close/open blinds when movies start Posted: 14 Dec 2020 12:52 PM PST Hello all! This question is a combination of a couple things: 1.Im finally moving from an apartment to a house and am looking to start a home theater room 2. I've started setting up smart lights to start/stop when my movies start. What Im looking for is a way to automatically close/open drapes along with the lights when movies start/end. Im very new to the home automation thing, but Im an adequate coder, have access to some hardware. I'm looking for something like either an API controlled motor that could turn the bar to lift the drapes, or maybe a motor with a smart relay switch? Or maybe even just a premade electric drape system that I could trigger from an API? Any suggestions are appreciated, or if this is impossible, that could be useful info as well! Hopefully this isn't a ridiculous question, and thanks in advance! I guess I should also mention I have looked at some of the prebuild systems out there, not opposed to working with those if anyone could recommend one? [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Dec 2020 02:36 PM PST I bought this 4-pack of smart plugs and plan on flashing them to tasmota firmware to use with mqtt. My question is, has anyone gotten these and actually tested them to see how far they go before failing? can they actually handle the 10A that they're rated for? My hope is that I'll be able to use them for roof heat strips without catching anything on fire... I have three heat strips, one 100 ft / 500 watt (120V), and another of unknown wattage, but half the length. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Dec 2020 10:53 AM PST I am designing a home automation system with a Raspberry Pi. I want to place wireless buttons to trigger a command. Ideally powered from a small battery such as CR2032, my buttons should be low energy and low cost. The brain would be an ATtiny in sleep mode, button wakes it up via interrupt and sends signal, then goes back to sleep. What would be the lowest energy choice to send the signal? I came up with these solutions:
I have seen an Energy Harvest BLE switch which does not require a battery, but it is not worth the cost since I am planning to place a lot of those buttons, and replacing battery once a year or so is not a big deal. Any thoughts or alternatives? I can consider using or repurposing pre-made low cost smart buttons. [link] [comments]

New Nest Thermostat (non-learning) to send notification Posted: 14 Dec 2020 10:22 AM PST I am very new to home automation and don't really plan to go too deep into it. However, I replaced our old mercury thermostat with the new Google Nest Thermostat. The main reason was to be able to look up the house temperature when traveling. Most recently, I had an issue with our furnace not turning on. No big deal because I was home and have someone coming to look at the issue. However, I noticed in the energy dashboard that the thermostat was trying to turn on the furnace most of the night. Is there a way to have a notification sent to my phone if the furnance is "running" for more than an hour? [link] [comments]
Making a dumb (UK) electric towel rail, smart Posted: 14 Dec 2020 03:59 PM PST Hi friends, I've got an electric towel rail in my bathroom. Although it doesn't do a great job in heating a room, a nice warm towel can make an early start on a winter's morning a bit more bearable. This appears to be the rad, and is powered by an electric element which feature a 'smart' thermostatic control. The control is FAR from smart, and is a real ball ache to use it you want something to heat up in advanced. I'd like to replace(?) this control with something I can hookup to HomeKit, and set some automation/scheduling to it, in a similar way I do with my Tado gear. The power from the rad feeds into a fused spur on the outside of my bathroom, so my initial thought is: Step 1) Replace the element with a super dumb electric element, that has zero controls - something like this Step 2) put something behind the spur, between it and the element. Perhaps a Lightwave RF smart relay Has anyone done this, or similar? Does anyone have any guidance, ideas, or blessings for my plan? Thanks! Tom [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Dec 2020 03:17 PM PST Dear Automators, Recently received few Shelly1's both flashed successfully with Tasmota. Noticed that one only works with low voltage via usb. If connected to line voltage I cannot see AP, however if I connect usb power to pins, Ap shows up and everything works fine. I wonder if anyone experience this before? Currently have 6 Shelly's all flashed with Tasmota no issues. Perhaps with recent order one is just defective? Thank you all, [link] [comments] |
