My cousin cannot turn on heater remotely because the manufacturer's website certificate has expired

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 07:10 AM PST

The certificate of the website that includes APIs to control the heater has expired and it's impossible to log in because Android blocks any non-secure connection from apps by default (and you cannot disable this option afaik). The company is "already aware of the problem and is working to solve the problem asap". In the meanwhile, he has to turn on and off the heater manually and he cannot schedule anything.

Me: * laughs in everything local *

This is just a reminder that privacy (which is extremely important) is not the only reason why you should run everything you can locally.

    Newbie looking for a button

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 09:13 PM PST

I'm starting to setup smart lighting as a first home automation step.

I've tried setting up a Kasa HS210 3 way switch kit, but I can't get it work. According to my electrician, it's because the power goes to the fixture before the switches.

My thought as a plan B was to put smart bulbs in the fixture, thinking I could just get smart buttons in lieu of using them switches. The problem is that I can't seem to find any. Can anyone recommend any buttons?

Note: I do not currently have a hub.

NUC or Raspberry Pi + What OS ?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 12:09 AM PST

    Hello,

I have a Raspberry Pi and was looking to replace it with a NUC that could be multi functional. However, I am not aware of the best set of software to use on the NUC. If I did use the NUC and Homeassistant and a bunch of other home automation (incl camera and at some point some image recognition too) - what is the best OS to run the NUC ..

I don't want to just buy the NUC for the homeassistant - I'll then use it to stream, transcode and do other functionalities as my home automation goes. I want a system that when it reboots gets the all servers (images) up and I might be running multiple docker on it as well

At some point I am even considering adding an SSD to my Mac Mini and using it. However, most of the folks are suggesting a bare metal Ubuntu installation.

So folks, what would you suggest that would last me a couple of years of tinkering and also keep the system relatively stable based on where software are at the moment.

Prototype looking for criticism: IFTTT-style system with greater customization, and more accessible than HA

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 04:06 PM PST

    Video of Prototype: https://youtu.be/wDZr6yRz1yc

Hi everyone. This began from a feeling that the hardware in my family's home should integrate in a less roundabout and more customizable manner than IFTTT, while being more plug-and-play than the excellent Home Assistant for greater accessibility.

The goal is to enable anybody to easily implement high level logic with hardware sensors, without having to understand the plumbing and communication. Direct integration would allow for greater customization of unique conditional logic, using a GUI to specify what "inputs" from hardware lead to what "actions."

The prototype has motion detection, object detection, incrementing a counter, and Telegram notifications, configurable with a basic web GUI. Ideas for additional "inputs" include physical buttons, scheduled time triggers, and noise levels. Ideas for additional "actions" include API requests, playing audio, logic with GPIO, LEDs, etc. It could also run locally, have a REST API, etc. depending on what interests folks.

What I'd like to ask: Do you think a system like this would be useful, for a use case that IFTTT, Home Assistant, and others don't solve well enough? If so, what would you want it to do?

Building a motion activated, battery powered IR illuminator, Part 3

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 04:59 PM PST

TL;DR - I documented the entire experience, instructions for all of this are located here: https://nullsec.us/battery-powered-ir-illuminator/

I've spent some time searching for an additional IR illuminator to supplement my security cameras. The only thing that matches this description is the Brinno APL200. Unfortunately, it is no longer produced, and where I have been able to find it still in stock, it is prohibitively expensive ($100 USD range). While surfing on Amazon though, I came across something similar enough that I originally thought they may have reused the same plastic body molds, and possibly the same circuit boards. This turned out not to be the case, but it still works.

Here's a sample of what it looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUfV4RDKDRk - This is taking from a Ubiquiti G3 Flex with it's own IR light enabled.

Lidl / Smartcrest bulbs - can’t reset anymore?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 04:25 PM PST

I've been reconnecting a bunch of the new Lidl smart bulbs from their hub to a ConBee II and (on two occasions / bulbs) i managed to accidentally switch the bulb off just as it entered pairing mode. I can't seem to be able to put it back into pairing mode anymore - no matter how many times i switch it on/off and or whether i power it off for 10s before attempting again (as per the help section in the app). Has anyone else ran into this? Are there any alternative ways of putting them into pairing mode?

Permanently disable mic input from Google Nest Mini

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 07:39 PM PST

I'd like to have a Nest mini (or a few) on my fritn and back porches. I'll never trust entry into my home with automation, but I'd still like to secure these devices a bit more. Is there any way to have these outdoors and permanently disable the microphone/input other than taking them apart and physically removing the mic?

My DIYHue + Hue essentials combo can't find my Phillips Lights trip Plus

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 03:28 PM PST

I set-up DIYHue on my Raspberry Pi 3, and connected it to my Hue Essentials app. That much is working.

However, when I search for my Phillips Lightstrip Plus on the app I get nothing.

I've tried to connect to the Raspberry Pi using the Phillips Hue app, but it asks to update the "bridge". This update fails all the time.

If anyone have any ideas, would greatly appreciate it. I was hoping there would be a way to find whatever signal the Lightstrip is emitting, but I got no programming knowledge.

Drone security camera (flying or driving)

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 12:25 PM PST

    Does anything like this exist?

I have a vacation home and I want to be able to look around now and then, but I'd need 10 cameras to cover the whole indoor area, and I don't need constant surveillance.

Is there anything like a drone I can operate over the Internet, and fly back to its charger? (I have very strong WiFi)

Or like a Roomba with a camera on it, but that I can drive around remotely? The idea is that it has a charging base it can return to.

Could I maybe even attach an IP camera to a remote control car that I can control over the Internet?

    Ge Switch Wiring Help

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 09:23 AM PST

Quick wiring help, ge en brighten zwave switch. So I finally got around to replacing an old outdated wink relay with a regular switch and I'm not getting power when I flip the breaker, clearly I've mixed up some wiring and wanted to run it by all. This powers a single outdoor light, it appears to be a diasy chain with two black wires (hot), ground (copper) and two white wires, load and neutral. My best guess is I have my neutral and load wires switched... Thoughts?

Converting comfortlink ii to Nest. Help!!

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 08:04 AM PST

Hi all, hoping y'all can lead me in the right direction.

    What I'm hoping to know: - Can I? - Should I? - If so, how do I?

Some details: We just bought our house, and it has an old ComfortLink ii system (Trane HVAC system) installed. It works fine, but I got a screaming deal on a new Nest last week.

The ComfortLink system has 3 wires (D, R, B) - not compatible with the Nests traditional thermostat wiring.

I understand I will need to rewire my HVAC for traditional operation, probably run some new wire, etc. - but HOW. There seems to be little to no resources on how to do that. Also, I've seen mixed feedback online for actually making this switch - some people seem to think it's easy, others say I'm likely to brick my HVAC system.

I would really love to integrate a thermostat into our smart ecosystem, and also put temp sensors in different rooms (our house heats unevenly), but the newer Trane systems that do those things cost 4-5x what I got this Nest for. Am I pigeon holed into sticking with Trane??

    Caseta Questions for Basement

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 07:57 AM PST

First, I will try and explain my current lighting situation, and then where I want to go. In my basement I have 2 zones of lights. There is a standard 3 way light switch at the top of the steps, and 2 dimmer switches at the bottom. The 3 wy at the top of the steps and one of the dimmers at the bottom control one zone, and the 2nd dimmer at the bottom controls the other.

What I want to do is convert the 3 way switch and first dimmer to a Caseta/pico remote. and the second switch to its own caseta dimmer.

Once I have that setup, is there a way to make the pico remote at the top of the steps able to turn off both zones? I will be using homekit.

Also, will I need a hub to control these lights remotely if using Homekit?

    Thanks!

    Under-cabinet lighting

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 08:45 AM PST

I'm looking for some under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen and I'm considering the Hue strips. I need task lighting primarily.

The color feature, the smart feature, that's in the nice-to-have part (though remote control is higher on the list). I don't have existing bulbs, but I plan on setting up all my accessory lights with smart bulbs - eventually. Hue looks reliable, flexible (Zigbee), and established.

Is a Hue Strip fit for purpose or should I look elsewhere? Is there a comparable product I should investigate that has high reliability?

Replacing Sonos with Mopidy and Snapserver

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 09:43 AM PST

I want to replace my Sonos setup with Mopidy and Snapserver (or similar). I'm nearly there, but I'm missing one piece of the puzzle.

With the Sonos app (Android), I can select music from one of many sources (home server, Spotify, Tunein, etc) and play it on one or more devices. The output may be the kitchen, the living room or both. At the same time, someone else in the house can pick a music source (server, Spotify, etc) and play on another device (eg, bedroom).

All of the above - multiple streams playing to one or more devices - can be managed from one app.

Can that be done with Mopidy/Snapserver or similar? What would the app in the middle be?

I'm sure I'm close to solving this, but this last bit is stumping me.

Magic Home led strips wrong colors

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 07:07 AM PST

I've bought magic home led controller to update my current led strips that were controlled with ir. They seem to have the same (4 pin connectors) but when I set them up with the new controller, the colors appear wrong. Blue colors are correct, but when I choose green colors they turn to red colors, and when I choose red colors they turn to green colors. Can I do anything to correct them ? Software/ hardware? Or should I buy different controllers/ led strips?

    Wireless temperature controlled power socket?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 09:07 AM PST

I have a sump pump in my basement that discharges outside. When it gets below freezing I manually turn it off and turn it back on when it warms up. Of course, I would like to automate this.

All of the temperature controlled power sockets I've seen require a hardwire from the power plug to the thermometer. Unfortunately this doesn't work for my house, I need something where the thermometer is wireless outdoors OR some sort or device that knows the weather outdoors.

My dream scenario would be a smart plug that I can plug my sump pump in and it automatically turns off at 32degrees and turns back on at ~40 degrees.

Any recommendations? I'm an "Alexa" household if that matters. Thanks!

Homeseer - should i stay or should i go?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 10:55 AM PST

Looking for feedback on Homeseer vs other platforms (probably Smartthings, but open to all recommendations). Currently running Homeseer Pro software with SmartStick+, but I kind of want my PC back so exploring a dedicated controller like the HomeTroller.

My home is mostly z-wave; I have a few Nest products (thermostat and smokedetect). My family uses the Alexa integrations a lot. Z-wave will remain default platform for now, but it wouldn't hurt to have some flexibility though certainly not needed (home WiFi is already set with Ubiquiti, and I have no Zigbee, Insteon, etc.)

I'm replacing the PC that's been running Homeseer Pro software, so it's a convenient time to consider change. HomeSeer was kind of the only game in town when I started this almost 10 years ago, and I have no complaints, just curious if I might be missing out on something much better. Hubitat seems popular, and through this sub, I'm just starting to learn about the DIY world which is also fascinating.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts and feedback, and all the great help this sub has been!
