Posted: 04 Dec 2020 11:16 AM PST I followed Rob's instructions and built two identical setups for different areas of my home. In both setups the Arduino flash is successful -- I can see the chips on my network. The motors have power -- I can hear them, they're warm to the touch, and when plugged in, I can't turn their shafts. I can verify input_number slider movements from Home Assistant in MQTT Explorer. I've checked the wiring multiple times. But neither setup gives me any response from the motor. I think I'm using the exact same equipment as Rob recommends: Usongshine Stepper Motor Driver TB6600: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HHS14VQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Usongshine Nema 17 Geared Stepper Motor: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V359RFB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 HiLetgo ESP8266 NodeMCU: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B010N1SPRK/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'd sure appreciate suggestions on what I might check next. Control Ceiling Fan and a Separate Lamp with a Single Switch? Posted: 04 Dec 2020 09:16 PM PST At the entrance to the master bedroom, I have is a double light switch. One of the switches controls the ceiling fan and the other switch is supposed to be for the ceiling fan lights, but the current fan installed does not have any. Instead, we use a lamp at the far end of the bed. Is it possible to install a single switch that can control the fan AND the lamp using either a smart bulb or an outlet? Thanks! Taking a look at wall switches. Need help! Posted: 04 Dec 2020 08:10 PM PST Could someone please explain these two switches in my kitchen? Currently looking into starting to move my home over to ZWave devices and was wondering if I can even do it... Box 1 - Switch on Left is a single pole? Switch on Right is a 3way? Much appreciated. Is there any way to make my home camera compatible with zigbee? Posted: 04 Dec 2020 10:16 PM PST Recently I bought too many wifi powered devices and the internet of my house dropped significantly. I can't even connect to the wifi of my house sometimes, and I thought of changing all the devices to zigbee ones. I bought the zigbee hub and all my new devices are powered by it. Only thing that I can't find is a zigbee camera. The thing is,my cameras are already expensive enough, even if I found a new one I wouldn't wanna spend 200+ to make it compatible with zigbee. So all in all,is there a way to make the home camera's compatible with zigbee or am I doomed to buy new ones? [link] [comments]

RobVacuum recommendation for two shedding dogs Posted: 04 Dec 2020 09:28 AM PST I have two dogs and one is husky. So there are dog hairs everywhere on my floor. I currently have a roomba960 for vacuuming and irobot m6 for mopping. My 960 was kind of stopping working since last year. It sometimes work. And it keeps getting stuck by dog hairs. I have replaced the brushes, the filter, everything I can replace from iRobot website but it doesn't help so I want to buy a new one now. Any recommendations? Thinking about i7+ but worrying about its quality because my 960 doesn't really last long for me and my m6 is getting stuck frequently now as well after one year. [link] [comments]

Is there any way to loop an Alexa routine? Posted: 04 Dec 2020 04:43 PM PST Hey there! I'm trying to make an Alexa routine for Christmas that will have a smart lamp alternate between red and green every 5 seconds. There doesn't seem to be any kind of scripting in the app, so I was wondering if there was any possible way that I could loop it. Thanks for any help [link] [comments]
Aeotec Smart Plug: washing machine not turning on Posted: 04 Dec 2020 02:30 PM PST I just purchased an Aeotec Smart Plug which is rated for 15 amps, my washing machine is 10 amps, so on paper everything should work, but when I plug the washing machine in the smart plug, the machine just doesn't turn on at all. Has anyone experienced this and is there a simple workaround, another plug, or am I just SOL as far as making my dumb washing machine smart? ** EDIT: even though it was appearing in my zwave network, it wasn't loading properly. Just deleted the node, re-added it, and now we're in business! [link] [comments]
Need help with an automation for bluetooth Posted: 04 Dec 2020 08:12 PM PST Anyone know the best way to automatically run a Google Assistant command when connecting a bluetooth device to your phone. End goal is to change a smart light bulb to a specific color when I'm listening to noise cancelling headphones in my office so my family knows I can't hear them? Would like to do it without IFTTT if possible since I'm out of free applets (unless you know of any existing applet). [link] [comments]
Any reason not to get an Echo 4th Gen for (almost) every room? Posted: 04 Dec 2020 07:39 PM PST Half my life now I am living with three kids in various parts of a 4-bedroom house. I bought the house in October and have recently begun exploring building a smarthome. Growing up I had fancy cousins with a house intercom system that was brilliant -- any downside I should consider to jumping on the black Friday deal and buy ~6 @ $69 for an intercom system? Music throughout the house seems like it would be pretty great as well, assuming they sync well? [link] [comments]
RPi for streaming audio (like Volumio, PiCore, LMS), but also run audio notifications? Posted: 04 Dec 2020 06:35 PM PST I'd like to use a Raspberry Pi as a audio client for streaming audio (Pi + USB DAC + bookshelf speaker). There's a couple of client solutions out there that involves creating a Pi SD card image - I think both Volumio and PiCore use this method. But that means the Pi is solely dedicated for that purpose. I'd like to be able able to run other things on the Pi, especially for such light-weight applications as playing audio client. I'd like to play audio notifications from my home automation system (like use node-red to subscribe to notification MQTT messages and play sound files for messages) or do some kind of TTS from MQTT payload. Does such a thing exist? Also, do you have an opinion about Volumio vs PiCore/LMS vs any other options out there? [link] [comments]
Can't Find Automation Being Triggered Posted: 04 Dec 2020 06:22 PM PST Two, possibly three years ago I set up my Christmas tree lights on a timed outlet to go on and off at particular times. I wanted to edit it but I can't find the automation anywhere... even though it's being triggered every day. The weird part is I can find the outlet in Jinvoo Smart (the secondary app I needed to stand it up). I've dug around Smarthings (classic and new), Home, and a few other apps for off brand equipment but no dice. So I went to try and find some sort of action log? Can't seem to find that either and I swore that something like that existed not too long ago, even if it doesn't show the Christmas light. I'm honestly at a loss. I guess I could reset the plug, but hunting down the automated on and off seems like an odd occupation at this point. Suggestions? [link] [comments]
Smart Life compatible humidity sensor (WiFi) Posted: 04 Dec 2020 05:35 PM PST I'm looking for a SmartLife compatible wifi sensor that would allow me to use in-app actions to trigger a smart outlet my humidifier is hooked up to if humidity reaches a certain threshold interval. Devices using other apps with IFTTT integration is also an option. I do not use a hub like ZibBee, so just a direct WiFi platform. Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Dec 2020 04:57 PM PST So I bought these smart outlets on Amazon and downloaded the compatible app (this one) called Smart Life a few months ago. Was perfect up until we had to switch our router to a new one that also supports wifi 6; no big deal because we still have 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi networks up, but I still had to reset the smart outlets to the new 2.4GHz wifi network. They work fine and just as well as before, but the only difference is now the app doesn't show the option for "ON/OFF" a.k.a. "Wireless 3-way control", and only shows either "ON" or "OFF" options for the switches to my smart outlet (on the app). Not a huge deal, but now I've had to separate two different "Launch Tap-to-Run" smart device groupings, one as "Lights ON" and the other to "Lights OFF", whereas before they were the same button because there was an "ON/OFF" toggle option that automatically just switched the lights depending on their current setting. Anyone know anything about this? Did I reset the smart outlets wrong? It's not a big deal but it's kind of weird to now have to have two separate Smart buttons for ON and OFF for a function that used to be simply one button ON/OFF. This picture shows the previous registrations of the devices on top with the red "disconnected/deleted" icon (that still have Wireless 3-way control listed as their switch function! == the ON/OFF toggle which no longer exists?) and below are the current setting of the devices, which can only be ON or OFF as shown here. There used to be a 3rd option here that said "ON/OFF" which was a toggle instead of the single handed options that turns the devices ON, or OFF. Any clarification would be great. Thanks. Yale Assure automation options WiFI vs zwave vs zigbee Posted: 04 Dec 2020 09:45 AM PST I'm totally new to home automation but have been doing a bunch of reading and video watching. I have to admit I thought this world would be pretty well developed by now but it's crazy how convoluted it gets. I recently purchased three Yale Assure SL smart deadbolts with the wifi adapter. I know they also offer zwave and zigbee adapters. I'm trying to understand how functionality may differ between the options. Please tell me if my understanding is correct WiFi: Will require me to plug in to wall the wall wart that came with the lock. This allows access to WiFI. I can then use app on my phone to mange the lock. I can also somehow configure Alexa to perform some control over the lock Zwave: hub required. I could then do some commands with alexa. yale app won't work? Zigbee: my new echo has zigbee. Does this mean I could control the lock directly from echo with no hub? I also assume yale app won't work with this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Dec 2020 11:46 AM PST Sorry in advance for the long post. Not sure if this is the best place for this but its the subreddit that gets the most hits when I search for whole home audio. I have an outdated barely working intercom system that I would like to replace with something useful, my thought it to replace the intercom stations with speakers and have distributed audio throughout the house. The current doorbell is tied into the intercom system, which is something I would like to keep. The plan I have come up with so far is this: I currently have a Denon 4200 HEOS AVR in my living room powering a 5.1 ceiling speaker setup that was preexisting, with Zone 2 powering a left and right speaker on the back patio about 10 ft up. I have a HEOS amp on the far side of my yard connected to wifi powering rock speakers. This setup works well for syncing my living room with my backyard, and replacing HEOS probably isn't a realistic option at the moment. Id like to utilize Mono 6 zone amp to distribute the audio, at the moment it appears I will need 2. I am thinking it would be best to run zone 2 from my avr into an input and run the patio speakers as a zone from the amp. Im debating between either Polk in wall or these stereo single speakers to replace the intercom units throughout the house. I am thinking running the Polk as bridged mono speakers will probably have better sound? I am planning on replacing the intercom master unit with an android in wall touchscreen unit to run the android app that can control the monoprice amp with the itach flex. Since I am doing this I figure its a chance to add some ceiling speakers to fill out the sound in the foyer and the dining room. This is one area I am conflicted on. I am not sure if it would be better to run ceiling speakers with 3 speakers taking up three zones each as a bridged mono or to try to run a 70v speaker system from an additional amp. I don't think running a 70v system for the ceilings would prevent t me from needing 2 of the monoprice 6 zones as I have 7 separate intercom zones that will need replaced with wall speakers, and I would still need an output for the 70v system. To keep the doorbell the best option I have found is this paging controller. This would be run into input 1/pa on the master amp unit to allow paging to all active zones. If there's a cheaper/better option please let me know! I am adding a rough diagram I drew up of how I would wire it and set this up. I have a cabinet in the living room large enough for a small rack mount that I would put the amps in and would home run all wiring to there. All bedroom zones would get the one gang wall controller wired in, the foyer/dining room/patio would not. As it is drawn up I would be using all but one zone output from the 2 amp units. One area I am struggling with is what I would use as inputs. One would be the paging system for the doorbell, one would be from the AVR to allow HEOS distribution through the amps. I would like to have 2 casting devices so at least two of the bedrooms could cast their own music/audio through their own speaker. Not sure what devices are best for this. Outside eof that what are some good input devices to add/utilize? Thanks in advance for all your suggestions and help! [link] [comments]
3 exterior doors- 3 Nest Yale locks? Posted: 04 Dec 2020 03:14 PM PST I started with one nest IQ indoor camera (I wanted to check in w/my kids while at work) and slowly have been adding other nest products (doorbell and thermostat) With Black Friday sales I recently decided to add more including several Google hubs, smart bulbs and and two Nest Yale locks. I plan to do more with smart switches and outlets in the future and eventually a smart garage door opener of some sort. I have a front door (just installed the first lock), a seldom used- but often left unlocked by my kids- side door, and the door from my house into garage. I was planning on purchasing another Nest Yale lock, but I'm just a little nervous about having all three doors set up this way. What if there's an issue? I think somewhere there's a post by somebody who had some sort of nightmare problem. However, I like the idea of being able to check all my locks from upstairs or when I'm away. I also want to keep things simple, which is why I'm just sticking with Nest/Google. I'm not a tech person and I'd rather not make things more complicated with bridges and whatever else. So my question, is there any serious risk having all my exterior doors setup with Nest Yale smart locks? Or would it be advisable to have one be a smart lock/keyed combo? If so, any suggestions for that? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Twinkly lights: is there a way to determine what is (or isn't) "Gen II" prior to buying? Posted: 04 Dec 2020 02:09 PM PST I'm looking at getting the 150 strand of twinkly lights for using outside behind some rainscreen siding we have on our house to provide some 'backlit' effects. I wanted something with relatively robust options, but that didn't require DIYing with an arduino or the like (have the desire, but just not the time/energy). Finding them online is a bit sporadic...every place seems to have slightly different stock. And I specifically want the 150 strand due to the length working for what we need and that's not available locally anywhere. My question: I noticed that some are specifically listed as "generation II". Is it fair to assume any of them being sold right now are second generation? If not, is there significant difference in packaging or any other easily identifiable way to determine if I'm getting the newer sets? (Bonus question: Are Twinkly's entirely dependant on an app? Meaning...will these be 'bricked' the minute iOS is updated and the company decides to no longer support an app, or is it still controllable via other methods?) [link] [comments]
Help needed with connecting Shelly 1L without neutral Posted: 04 Dec 2020 06:30 AM PST I have a light switch with 2 switches in my living room, but don't have a neutral wire present at the switch. So I bought the new Shelly 1L. I know absolutely nothing about wiring this, so I'm afraid I'm gonna screw something up. So hopefully someone can confirm my interpretation of how I should connect it all. First some important details:
Because the ceiling light will never draw the required 10W do I need the Shelly Bypass? Because the neutral is only present at the ceiling light I need to connect it there? So here is my interpretation of the setup which I worked a grand total of 10 minutes on: https://i.imgur.com/mGAwU2I.png. Is this correct? Can it be simplified because I'm not actually using the ceiling light? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:57 PM PST Hey guys so I bought a new house 2 weeks ago. Since then I'd been trying to automate the house. I want to use Homekit because I am under the impression that it has better security. However, SO gets frustrated with Siri voice command. Alexa responds to voice commands better. Right now, we have mixed Homekit and Alexa controlled devices.
I've read about homebridge or smartthings but I don't know if our smart devices is capable of integrating to Homekit. I want to automate the security and lights mainly. Alexa is great but I don't trust it that much. We've had issues where it won't obey commands because it lost connection. I've added eeRo mesh to improve connectivity around the house, it has been working great since then. Also, I hate that I have to open myQ app before I can open my garage door. I'd like to automate it to open when my car it's in the driveway. What are my options? [link] [comments]
I've got one of these! (non-spoiler: just a bit of old tech) Posted: 04 Dec 2020 09:30 AM PST (I realise this might not be the best place to ask about this. I'm open to suggestions as to alternatives.) https://www.aliexpress.com/i/448830775.html To be clear, I only have the camera, not the monitor. It's old. It's probably a piece of sh... well, probably not worth doing anything with other than throwing it in the bin. But... I'd like to make it work. Maybe not for anything "useful", just for the interest and learning experience. Does anyone have any idea where I should start? It appears that the linked camera might not be exactly the one I have because on there is says "12 volt" and there's a sticker on the back of mine that says "6 volt", although oddly the number on the back (WC134087CAI) matches. So... hmm. [link] [comments] |
