Multiple August Smart Lock Pros with Connect Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:15 PM PST I have three August Smart Lock Pros with connect, and Alexa won't recognize: "Alexa, lock all doors." I can lock them with three individual commands, without issue. I'd like to setup the locks in a group, so I can lock them all at once. Later, I'd like to add it to my "Alexa, goodnight" routine, which currently involves all downstairs lights off, alarm set (with the help from Smartthings) and a message from Alexa. Any idea how to go about this? Thanks in advance for any replies. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Dec 2020 09:56 PM PST Has anyone found a compact wifi switch that installs on the light's cord that doesn't require a cloud connection, or which can be flashed with a firmware that doesn't? I'm using Shelly1 in their plastic shell, but would like something a bit more compact. That said, I do like the combo of the Shelly1 and shell, except for the bulk. [link] [comments]

Questions about lights, sensors, z-wave Posted: 05 Dec 2020 07:27 PM PST Hi all, I decided to start ramping up automation + sensors in my home. I've been pretty annoyed at a house full of 2700K bulbs and after some experimenting with 5000K, I've decided I'd like to go with a smart automated solution. I picked up some wifi led bulbs and before unboxing decided to do some more research. I'm down the rabbit hole now. I had heard of zigbee and z-wave protocols but only have a slightly better picture now. My current setup: I have good wifi coverage with a couple of ubiquity wifi APs. I have a half server rack in the basement, running pfsense, truenas, VMs, and k8s. I have already set up home assistant for a electricity monitoring project. Electric panel with current clamps going to a wifi board. Using mqtt protocol, so I've got the broker working fine. I am interested in colored lights (2700K to 5000K), switches, door sensors, room sensors, water sensors. I am fine with tech and complexity, but having an app for things like (turn off living room lights) would be helpful for my SO. We're both on android. We've got way too many switches in the house too. Three separate dimmable sets of lights in one room. Ideally I'd like to grouping them, have color adjust to time of day (and maybe some other rules), have one wall switch to override schedule, and have some app support. I have a vague notion that I will prefer z-wave devices. I have read a lot of painful stories now about wifi led bulbs and being locked in to shitty apps. Sometimes flashing bulbs to some open firmware works, but in more recent chips it doesn't. That is exactly what I don't want. Both zigbee and z-wave are intended to be supported via a local mesh and it seems less likely to be vendor lock-in. Questions:
Really appreciate anyone willing to share their knowledge. And I am hoping I can contribute as well in due time. Edit Should also add I have two ecobee thermostats (and one came with another room sensor), and a few Google assistant speakers. I'm not sure what amount of support there is between HA or homeseer, but happy to know about voice control or voice notifications if that's a thing. [link] [comments]

Smart bedroom door, open/close, maybe keypad for fun? Posted: 06 Dec 2020 12:06 AM PST So I'm almost done making new bedrooms in our house, and the kids requested automatic door openers, triggered by some movement sensor. "Just like we have in minecraft". So I accepted the challenge, and I'm a bit unsure of how to implement this. A few issues I'm running into, I was hoping you could help me with:

"super dumb" drip coffee makers for smart switch usage Posted: 05 Dec 2020 05:47 PM PST I'm looking for a super dumb drip coffee maker (has a mechanical on/off switch) I can control with a smart switch that also brews decent coffee. 10+ cups, thermal carafe a plus. Any suggestions? This is the sort of thing I could probably find browsing in-store if there wasn't a pandemic going on. No one advertises "mechanical on/off switch" like it's a bloody feature :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:22 PM PST The light switch for my garage controls an outlet in my garage ceiling....but it is in an awkward spot. The garage light fixtures are plugged into this outlet. The outlet has a great view of the whole garage. Is there a product I could plug into the outlet that would act as a motion sensor? (I would still plug my light fixtures into the outlet, but this motion sensor would be between lights and outlet) [link] [comments]
We have one Alexa plug to try out - what’s the most efficient use for it? Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:10 PM PST What's been the best way you've used the Alexa outlet plugs? I got one when it was $4 on sale just to try before we get any more, but I'm not sure what's the most efficient way to use it. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Dec 2020 09:27 PM PST Hey everyone. I wanted to extend my Hue lightstrip setup I usually have around my TV, but the starter kit didn't even have enough for my old TV, let alone the 77" LG I have now. The problem is that I can't find any simple extensions for it. Did they stop making it or something? I would go with a cheap Chinese set, but I want to set it up with the Asus Aura Sync software on my HTPC, and also have four Hue color bulbs behind my couch. I want them all synced, so changing brands now is out of the question. The only thing I can think of is maybe a different brand that actually works with the Hue (as in, will plug into the existing 78" of lightstrip I already have). I need about 144" total, so I'd need another 66" or so. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Dec 2020 12:25 PM PST So let me tell you, I'm coming late to the party, even being young I never feel the huge need to have a lot of technology doing things in my house like everyone else seems to have, but on prime day this year I decided to get an echo dot and a smart plug, I only wanted the smart plug to give it a try I wasn't really interested in one, I used it for a lamp in a bedroom that the switch is super inconvenient, now I'm hooked, I wanna get more more of them, I'm not looking to spend much money I'd dare to say I want them to be as affordable as possible, all I want is simple things like the lamp or to tell alexa to turn on the Christmas tree instead of me dodging on the back of it to plug it, the one I got was by amazon but which ones do you suggest, affordable and that is a good product? Remotely control TV and cable for grandma Posted: 05 Dec 2020 02:50 PM PST Hi all, Apologies if this is the wrong subreddit for this. My grandma is in a nursing home, and we have set up a TV in her room with a cable box. We have a cable package for Greek channels which is what she likes watching. She unfortunately isn't able to comprehend using the remote to turn the tv on or to browse channels, so she needs nursing staff to do that for her. This works fairly well, but there are times they forget to turn it on for her, etc. What I'm looking for is advice on options that would let me remotely play tv channels for her. We have an iPad set up in her room that auto answers when we call, so can check remotely to see if the tv is on and playing or not. I'd like to have the ability to remotely control the tv channel that is being broadcast. Price isn't an issue, so I'm just looking for straightforward reliable options. There is wifi at her nursing home. Controlling the tv remotely and being able to adjust the volume also would be amazing , but at minimum we can leave the tv on always, and then just control the channels being broadcast. Any thoughts? Thank you!! [link] [comments]
Smart Ceiling Fan and Dimmer Switch? Posted: 05 Dec 2020 08:25 PM PST I just moved into a new place. The bedroom has a ceiling fan with lights on it. That fan is controlled by what I believe to be the following switch: https://www.amazon.com/Lutron-MIR-LFQTHW-WH-Maestro-300-watt-Control/dp/B0017O71MI I am trying to replace this switch with a compatible smart switch. The only switch I have found that has both a dimmer, and a fan control would be the following: https://www.amazon.com/Ceiling-Control-Treatlife-Assistant-Schedule/dp/B086PPRWL7 Would this be a good choice, or is there something else I should go with? Simple smart gadget to move something back and forth Posted: 05 Dec 2020 07:50 PM PST I am looking for a simple smart gadget which I can attach a tag to, which should be able to be moved so it can be held againt a terminal and then be moved away again. I have thought about getting a wyze cam pan and attaching a plastic arm to it and have the pan as the back and forth movement but it seems a bit overcomplicated. Do any of you know of something simpler or maybe a DIY way of doing it? [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Dec 2020 09:08 AM PST I, like some of you, bought in to the cheap automated roller shades from Dreamer Technologies on Kickstarter a year and a half ago. Nothing else on the market was as cheap—that probably should've told me something. Fast forward to last week, I am installing my shades. The instructions are vague, the mounting bracket for the non-powered side is very hard to use (the stub kept rotating as I tried to slide it in place...why could they not have designed it to use a circular stub where rotation wouldn't have mattered?), but the most egregious thing was the WiFi setup. When I entered the SSID and password for my network, the device reset and went back into setup mode after a minute or so. Huh. I tried another brick (I bought four shades total) and had the same experience. I can see my router from the window. It's about 20 feet away. No other device in my entire house has issues connecting. Yet, I can't get these to connect. I moved the unit a foot away from the router, and sure enough, it connects. By about 10 feet away, the connection is flaky, and by 20 feet, it's gone. Anyone else had issues? I emailed Dreamer Technologies right away and gave them a week to respond—they haven't. Very disappointed in their product. [link] [comments]
Help with Use Case: Zooz Zen30 (SmartThings) & Philips WiZ WiFi Bulb Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:12 AM PST Hi! Here's what I'm trying to accomplish: I want to be able to use the Zooz Zen30 paddle to: a) Dim the WiZ smartbulb if possible using the dimmer paddle b) Set the Zooz Zen30 dimmer to a setting where switching it on and off doesn't cut the power to the bulb and I'm still able to voice control it (or dim through app) even when "off". TIA [link] [comments]
Speakers for TV that can also be used independently to play audios from Home Assistant Posted: 05 Dec 2020 04:09 PM PST Hi again. I know I might be a pain with this topic again, specially after finally achieving what I wanted (playing audios directly from the Raspberry Pi mini-jack output), but now I realize it would probably better to play these audios in another room, away from the Raspberry Pi. Explanation (you can skip this): If a burglar ever enters our apartment through the entrance door and hears me say "Hey! Who's there?! I'm gonna call the cops! You have ten seconds!" they might run away or they might realize it's a recording and go straight to the source of the sound to destroy it (the Raspberry Pi) and, thus, stopping the script which would've turned on the sirens a few seconds later. BTW, (further explanation, you can skip this), in case you're wondering, this audio is also useful for us: whenever Home Assistant detects the entrance door being opened before it detects us arriving at home (I wish this "bug" didn't happen but it happens sometimes), this freaky recording will remind us to turn off the script before the sirens start sounding and alerting everyone in the building within a few seconds. So, an obvious and easy answer would be: "just use the Chromecast on the TV, which is in the living room." Sure, but in this scenario the TV will be off. The Chromecast would take too long to turn on the TV and start playing the audio there. So then I thought: given the fact that the speakers that we use for our TV are quite crappy and we've been wanting to get better ones for years, how about we get ones that can also play audios independently, without needing the TV, and they get these audios wirelessly - with a Chromecast-like device - from Home Assistant? Do these exist? [link] [comments]
Turning on lamp on other side of room from switch controlled lamp. Posted: 05 Dec 2020 03:59 PM PST Hello everyone, I just moved into a new condo that has a wall switch controlled half hot outlet on one side of our office. I want the lamp on the other side of the office that's plugged into a normal always on outlet to turn on at the same time I flip the wall switch. Is there a smart plug that will turn on when the other plug gets power? So ideally the set up would be: Wall Switch on -> smart plug + one lamp turns on -> sends signal to other plug to turn on other lamp [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Dec 2020 03:32 PM PST Hi. I am going to be building a simple home on some property soon. I work in the communications field. We do access controls, video surveillance systems, cabling, etc., but we don't do a lot of automation. I want to have a home automation system that is simple, but robust. When I look at some of the simple systems, I'm drawn to Ubiquiti, Google, and Samsung, with Google seeming to be the frontrunner due to me using the heck out of Chromecast and liking all their other systems. That being said, Ubiquiti goes a step further and has networking equipment and lighting. Samsung seems a simpler system than both Google's and Ubiquiti's. Any others I'm missing? What is the standard to go to these days? [link] [comments]
How to manage long LED strip light runs? Posted: 05 Dec 2020 11:25 AM PST I am new to Reddit, and this is my first post, so sorry if I mess anything up. I was looking to put up some strip lighting in my bedroom, but I'm not sure exactly how to do it. I would like to be able to choose any color RGB or white, so I was looking at the RGB+CCT strips (something like this), which I think will work just fine (but if you know of anything better, I'd love to hear about it). The main issue I'm having is the fact that my room is pretty large, and to cover the whole room I would need about 80ft of strip lights. I would like to be able to power them all from one controller and PSU, but I'm not sure if that is possible. If anyone knows how to do this, I would really appreciate the feedback. Another problem I have is that I was planning to use the strips in an aluminum channel with a diffuser, but there are places in the room where there are corners not at 90o angles. Would this still work, or are there better options? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
