Buy a Smart Garage Door Opener or Make a Dumb One Smart?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 04:35 PM PST

I've just moved into a new house and the garage door opener doesn't work--my best guess is that there is a short somewhere in the wiring, as it works intermittently and if you bang on it you can get it to click on and off. I took it almost apart and didn't see an obvious problem, so I'm thinking about tossing it for a new one.

I can buy a standard garage door opener for about $130 online, or for like $170 I can buy a Chamberlin with "MyQ" built in. I'm not interested in using yet another app, and most of the time that I physically control the door will be done from my car, the rest of the openings/closings will be done via Home Assistant.

Is it worth it to buy a smart garage door opener, or should I just use a Shelly and a reed which to make a dumb opener smart? Thoughts are appreciated.

Have wall switch act as toggle with Shelly 1?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 05:58 PM PST

I have a regular switch hooked up to a Shelly 1 (US). I can turn the fan on and off with either the switch or the Shelly. And I can turn the fan on/off no matter the position of the switch. So far, so good.

What I want to do, is to have the wall switch operate as a toggle. So that when the fan is off with the switch in the up position, flipping the switch down turns the fan on.

Do I need a different switch or is there a setting I can update in the Shelly?

I'm using the stock firmware on the Shelly.

    Thanks!

Anyone know of a smart lock & lever in this form factor?

As the title states, anyone know of a smart lock and lever that could replace this:

It's to a metal security gate that sits outside the entryway prior to the main front door.

    Maintain chromecasts, upgrade overall system

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 12:05 AM PST

I have many Google/Chromecast devices (20+) around the house and it has got to a point where I'm getting dropoffs, syncing issues.

I know part of this could be caused by connectivity issues but I have Ubiquiti set up properly and have the necessary coverage.

Is there a way to maintain all my Google devices, use audio groups and have a better hub than using the Nest Hub?

    High end is OK

    WiFi Enabled Cameras

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 03:14 PM PST

    Hello r/homeautomation,

I am currently building a CV application where I run some DL models on my Xavier development kit. Although I want to run the models on a camera stream that is coming in through WiFi rather than a standard usb cable. (I am planning on the Xavier having its own WiFi.) I do not know the best place to shop around for a good WiFi streaming camera where I would be able to tap into its data with a python script, I feel like most security cameras on the market only let you see the stream through their secure app and are not meant for development. Does anybody know of some some good camera modules for this or the best way to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Regarding robot vacuums, is it normal for them to reach a point where they refuse to continue cleaning after recharging?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 05:28 PM PST

Title might be a bit confusing. I have a Neato D3 Connected that will clean as normal when started, run low on battery, and return to its base to charge before continuing its cleaning run. The problem is no matter how long it stays on the charging base, it never continues its run. The app just says "Charging to continue. Time left 0:00. Battery 85%" and the robot won't do anything until I manually shut it down (which means the robot forgets where it left off).

I've contacted customer support and their suggestion is to replace the battery, unsurprisingly. The bot is past the 12 months recommended for battery replacement but even so my question is, is this behavior normal for other robot vacuum brands when the battery starts to go? My only experience is with Neato. My expectation was the battery would deteriorate over time and steadily hold less and less of a charge but still be able to function normally. But instead the robot refuses to continue despite having as full of a charge as it can manage. Would I have this same issue with a Roomba or a Roborock?

Basically if other brands don't function this same way then I'm looking to switch, because I really don't want planned obsolescence or whatever else impeding the functionality of my vacuum.

I tried searching around online but the only information I could find was this Reddit thread from four months ago.

    Automated switches

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 01:46 PM PST

I'm new to home automation so bare with me :) I'm renovating my house and my electrician is soon going to start wiring the entirehouse so I basically have a blank slate.

Am I right in saying that it is best to wire the house with switches at source with sonoff/shelly (are there better ones?) rather than doing it externally? My thought is that anything you plug or light will become automated

If so what solutions should I look out for? I basically need 3x3 and 6x3 sockets for both lighting and power. I live in Malta, so our electrical is like the UK's

    Question about “help button”

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 06:41 PM PST

I'm trying to make some kind of call button for my grandma to have that will alert us when she hits it.

We have Alexa in the house so it would be good if she could like press a button (that she can keep on her person or with her somehow in the house) and it would alert our Alexa devices and the Alexa app on our phones. There is always someone here in the house with her, she has a show in her room and I have a show in my room, we have a couple dots and several of us have the app.

So like currently if she needs to get up in the middle of the night for the restroom or something, she has a whistle she can blow that one of us usually hears. We also have a camera/baby monitor set up in her room that alerts for any motion detected, but the alert really fails to get our attention.

I have it set up to where she can ask Alexa to call me, and it will drop-in on my show. She is also able to use her to turn on the light, call family, etc. But she has a dementia-like condition and often struggles to remember how to use or is unable to effectively talk to Alexa when she is having bad days with her illness. The issue is when she is having her bad days, she can't get up on her own and if she tries, she falls. And she fell yesterday and has several vertebrae fractured.

Before she moved in with us she had a Life Alert necklace with a button on it, so that's where my mind was I guess. Or like a call light in a hospital room. Sorry if I broke any rules about posting or subreddit or anything—I just really want to do anything to help her right now. She's still in hospital now after a fall so when she comes back home she is not going to be able to get up without assistance any longer. But when she comes back, if she needs anything at any time one of us isn't already with her, she can just click it and it will alert us. Or some better idea suggestion. Etc.

Thank you for your time to read all of that.

What are my options for automating this roof mounted evaporative airconditioning unit?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 08:40 PM PST

Our house is using a Bonaire Airconditioner, and it's probably the biggest item I need to get hooked in to my home automation.

It's controlled with one of these remotes: https://www.bonaire.com.au/products/cooling-controllers - and I'm hoping it's possible to get a wireless module that matches the frequency the remote uses and use an arduino/raspberry pi to send out the command the unit responds to.

Alternatively, is it likely that I can have an arduino interact with the Airconditioner's control circuitry directly? Maybe with some kind of serial protocol or similar?

Any insight would be great. My independent research (googling) has come up pretty bare.

About to (gulp) change my SSID - I assume this means that all of my Smart Switches, Google Home, Nest, etc will have to be reprogrammed

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 08:20 PM PST

I have Google Fiber and a 7-character SSID. I'm getting all kinds of nastygrams from Google that say I have to be 8 characters minimum. Plus it is time to replace their so so router as I've had dropouts at work, on my TV, and my work ThinkPad.

So I've bought a Netgear Nighthawk mesh system (good deal at Costco). The concern I have is the Smart Speakers (multiple Google Home devices), 4 Kasa light switches, 1 Wemo switch, and 3 Nest items (1 protect, 2 thermostats), plus garage door. Plus, a neglected SmartThings with many door/window sensors.

I assume I am going to have to reset the internet connection on all of these, right? Or if I reset my phone, will some/all of this go by itself? If I have to reset all of it, is it better to "forget" all of this and after I have forgotten all of it, just reinstall new?

Thanks - this is something I want to do a lot better on setup - this is my chance.

Add RGB led strip behind TV using shelly?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 08:09 AM PST

I'm brand new to the home automation scene and looking for something that I feel might be simple. I'd like to add an RGB led strip behind my TV that will power on and off with the TV and I can control the color and such using Shelly.

Is this possible? It seems like everything I see for the Shellys is things that go in junction boxes for outlets or light switches.

    Smart Dimmer Wiring

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 07:44 PM PST

Really could use some help figuring this out. I wired a Feit Electric wifi dimmer into a 2 gang box. In the 2 gang box is a 3 way switch and a single pole switch. I replace the single pole switch with the wifi dimmer. I got the dimmer to work, but now the dumb 3 way switch is no longer working. Also the rest of the outlets/switches on the circuit are no longer working. I am not sure what I did wrong. I will provide further information if requested. Thank you.

    Switch loop solution needed

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 07:36 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm now to the home automation stuff and I am running into issues with switch loops. I have a few ceiling fixtures in my house which have the power coming in through the light fixture, and not through the switch.

This means I have no neutral wire at the switch. I currently has an LED fixture on the ceiling. Since very few switches work without a neutral, can I swap the fixture and still have the switch work?

Can I put a different LED fixture on the ceiling and make it work? If so, what fixture would you recommend???

Looking for feedback / terms to search on a lighting plan

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 08:41 AM PST

Just getting started with home automation and lighting in a new place, and was hoping the folks here could offer some feedback on what I'd like (naively maybe) to do, and what I can search for to find the hardware I need.

I've put in a few hubless wifi devices, and the more I think about it the more if feels to me like the future of this (for me, at least) is for a home to be controlled in much the same way that a car is -- that is, with switches that send a signal over a network (but otherwise do nothing), devices like lights and outlets that can receive a signal, and a software layer in between. So, for example, rather than having my wall switches actually switch anything, I'd like them to send a signal over wifi that I can use with IFTTT or (for less latency?) Home Assistant to switch on or off whatever I choose. The lights themselves would always be powered.

I've got a background in software development, so the idea of being able to reconfigure a room in software is an exciting one. I'm not particularly worried about what happens if a router goes down, for example, though perhaps I should be.

What I'm wondering is two things... First, is there a reason why this isn't (yet?) a good idea? And second, are there switches on the market that are wifi devices only, rather than having a hardwired connection to a specific light/outlet? What would I search for if I'm looking for that kind of thing?

Thank you so much for your time. Excited to explore this!

    I need suggestions

    1. How to light the candle. The flame can damage the arc wires
    2. How to extinguish the flame. I was thinking of a servo mechanism that will close a lid

Light switch with switched hot only

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 12:03 PM PST

My house is the wiring mess of nightmares. My dining room overhead light fixture is controlled by a switch. It appears they just ran the hot back to the switch and it's just a cut off at this point for that leg.

I know, danger danger. If I wanted to automate this, could a luetron switch act as a scene controller to an aeotec or similar dimmer relay? I'm running a smartthings vs 3 hub and google home.

    Thanks

Best 2021 comparison of DIY platforms?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 10:02 AM PST

I'm looking for the best recent comparison of the various tinker-friendly HA platforms... is there a good one here?

I've been a user of BSR/X10/Insteon for many decades. I also have a few Smart Things systems that heavily utilize both Zigbee and Z-wave. I've lived with Crestron and hate that I can't tinker. I don't mind paying an upfront cost for software or whatever, but I'm personally interested in self-install and want the option of being entirely cloud-free (I'm installing on a boat this time!).

I hear CQC is awesome but it seems to have fallen off a cliff like 5yrs ago (very little press or public updates since then, although the forums are alive).

Anyway, I figure there's a chance someone here already started comparing Smart Things, CQC, Crestron, Control4, Insteon, Homeseer, openHAB, Savant, etc.

    It's 2021.. Nest or Ring?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 09:27 AM PST

I know this topic has been here before, but it's a new year. From what I've gathered reading online, Google is winding down the Google Nest stuff. Can anybody confirm. I have google phones and chromecast, so it would make sense to buy the nest, but I would hate to pump a bunch of money into Google Nest if they don't have long term plans for it. Has anybody used both Google Nest and Ring? I'd love to know the pros and cons. Thank you!

Automation based on Smart Plug current detection?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 09:16 AM PST

I have a smart plug connected to my TV just for power consumption monitoring (I never cut power to the TV), and also a smart LED light strip in the same room. I can control both individually using Google voice, etc.

What would be really cool is: When the amount of current running through the smart plug is greater than "X" amount (i.e. Tv has been turned on), automatically turn on the smart LED strips.

And, using the same principle, when tv is turned off, turn off the LED lights.

The hardware to make this happen seems to be there, but what software could I use to actually "script" such automation?

Replacement for Lutron Connected Bulb Remote

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 11:26 AM PST

I used one of the LCBR in an area of the house that I did not want to re-wire.

It basically served as a remote for "robots" in my wink set up - Controlled a couple of zwave lights in the garage that were on hot circuits that used to be controlled by a pull chain I imagine.

Looking for a replacement for this type of smart switch that is battery operated and is compatible with ST and hubitat.

My research has driven me toward the Aeotec Wallmote...

Wondering if you all have a better recommendation.
