Too many devices connected to router?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 07:25 AM PST

This might be a very basic question, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

I have a couple of smart devices around the house, all connecting to a router on the 2.5Ghz channel. We use the 2.5Ghz channel exclusively for smart devices, and the 5Ghz channel for work.

We have about 30 smart devices connected to the router ( switches, breakers, bulbs, etc ) and about 5 devices ( phones and laptops )

Recently, our wifi has been difficult to work with. Wifi is disconnected randomly, it takes a long time to connect, and often a lot of retries. I am wondering if this is because too many devices are connected?

I am using this router that came free with my broadband connection. Could that be the problem? If so, how should I solve this?

    Lighting options

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 11:31 PM PST

Hi all.. I'm new to home automation of any kind, I just bought a house so I figured it was time to experiment more.

What I'm looking for is bulbs for a few fixtures that I can use along side a motion sensor in a few rooms as well as strips for some locations

I don't want to have change any of my light switches either

Another thing I want to do is setup strips or something like that to sync with my TV

Again I know pretty much nothing about this topic at all, so I need some hand holding here and basically need everything dummed down and something that's going to be fairly simple to get all set up

Cost I would like to spend as little as possible obviously but at the same time I'm willing to spend more if the quality or reliability warrants that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Process Frigate events with Facebox for presence detection

I love Frigate and have been spending the last few weeks trying to use it for a room presence detection system. I've been using Frigate + Facebox + Node-Red to achieve this, but my Node-Red flow became pretty complicated and hard to maintain, so I decided to move my logic to a local API, which I containerized.

Currently the API takes in the entire MQTT Frigate event and if certain conditions are met, will process the images from that event through Facebox for identification.

The output from the API is an array of matching faces, which I then process through Node-Red to update the location for the matching users in Home Assistant.

[ { "id": "1613103956.29759-4g05fi", "name": "david", "matched": true, "confidence": 62.91, "attempt": 1, "attempts": 1, "type": "latest", "time": 0.65, "camera": "office", "room": "Office", "totalTime": 0.68, } ]

Instrumenting sensor event processing in your home alarm/automation system

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 12:19 AM PST

A new version of AlertR was released. Normally, I would not post such a trivial thing here, but this new version has a cool new feature some of you might like for your own projects.

First a short introduction for everyone who does not know AlertR: AlertR is a multi-purpose monitoring/alarm/signaling system for DIY people. It allows easy integration of your own code/scripts/projects, as well as using the ready to use components (such as monitor Raspberry Pi GPIO pins). If you want to build a home alarm system with Raspberry Pis, you can do it easily with AlertR. If you want to monitor your internal services, you can do it easily with AlertR. If you want to keep track of stock and crypto currency prices, you can do it easily with AlertR. If you just want things to happen on Host B when an event occurs on Host A, you can do it easily with AlertR. Thanks to its client/server architecture, you are not confined on having everything only on one host, but you can distribute everything in your network.

Now to the new cool thing. The server component of AlertR processes sensor events (such as a sensor went into a "triggered" state or went back into a "normal" state) and distributes it to the components that "react" on this information (such as raising an alarm). Basically, it signals the other components about state changes of sensors. Now you can instrument this sensor event processing. How does it work? Well, you can write an instrumentation script in the language of your choice and the AlertR server will pass the sensor event data to your script. This script can now do whatever you want with this data (modify it, delete it, ...) and return it to the AlertR server. The AlertR server will then continue processing with your updated data.

This was rather abstract, so let me give you an example: let us assume you use the reminder of your Google calendar events as a sensor. And you want that such a reminder turns on a light in your living room. However, you do not want every reminder to do that, but only the reminder of the event with the description "light on". Now you can add an instrumentation script which will filter out every reminder event that does not have "light on" in its description field. You can do the same for "light off" to turn the light in your living room off. And all over sudden, you can use your Google calendar to schedule home automation events.

Or another example: every morning you open the window in your bedroom to get fresh air into it. However, you often forget to close it. This is especially annoying in winter, since everything gets really cold. You have the window in your bedroom connected to a GPIO of your Raspberry Pi and you want a reminder after 10 minutes, that the window is still open. However, in summer you always have your windows open and you do not want this reminder. With the instrumentation, you can now modify the sensor event when opening the window to check if it is already summer and thus suppress the reminder. Or perhaps even check the outside temperature and only start the reminder after 10 minutes if it is lower than a certain threshold, for example, 18 degrees Celsius. For this example I wrote a shot tutorial how to do it with AlertR.

So, perhaps some of you find this interesting and want to give it a try.

Need help finding a suitable outdoor security camera based on the following criteria

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 11:12 PM PST

I'm looking for an outdoor security camera that:

    1. has a motion detection range of at least 45 feet, that picks up people walking by and not just passing cars at the outer reaches of that distance. Closer to the camera, I also want it to be able to pick up animals and not just people.
    2. has night vision that can see at least something, even if not very well, at least 70 feet away. But item #1 is most important.
    3. is preferably battery powered and holds a charge longer than one week. If it has removable batteries, even better. Because when the battery goes dead I can put another one in the camera while the first one is charging so the camera is never not being operated.
    4. is wifi and has functionality with an app, including the ability to see a live view from the camera viewed on my phone.
    5. provides an easy way of saving video files that I can transfer to a desktop computer somehow.
    6. records audio, even if the audio quality isn't great.
    7. is under $200
    8. is reasonably reliable

I would also be fine with a camera that records 24/7 instead of being motion activated, but it must have night vision. If there is a camera that records and saves video files 24/7, but also flags video files where motion was detected, that would be my most ideal camera. I would like both 24/7 recording AND motion detection if there is such a camera. But either one or the other will do. Although I'd probably prefer motion detection recording over 24/7 recording if I had to choose one or the other and couldn't have both.

Another bonus is an intercom feature, but this is not vital to my needs.

    Thanks!

Handling of IoT devices on home network

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 09:58 PM PST

I have decided to replace my Ubiquiti Amplifi Gamer Edition mesh system. I bought a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X SFP and two used Ruckus r610s. I was thinking that with the new network gear I might think about adjusting how I managed my IoT devices. I've seen alot of people talk about using a guest network or a vlan specifically for these devices. But is it worth the hassle to get all that setup? I have decent amount of devices that are connected wirelessly. I think around 30 or 40. I've hooked up as much as I can wired already. I just know the important devices I want to run the best. So I'd basically want the rokus, Chromecasts, tvs, Xbox, and desktops to run the best. (Desktops, one tv Roku combo are wired)

My thought would be since TVs and Rokus are easy to swap ssids on I'd create a second ssid for those devices and have all the current devices just hook up to another ssid that's using my old ssid information. Because changing the associated network on the majority of these IoT devices is a total pain especially with the amount.

But the real question is. Is it necessary? Would I see a boost in improvement? From a security stand point I understand I should. But like is it worth the complexity to get it all setup? I'm good enough with this to understand it but it's not my expertise. I'm a one time programmer who moved over to the server admin world.

Any help and thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to have a keypad lock installed on my old door without getting a new door?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST

Just starting to research into adding some smart devices to my house, but ...

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 08:24 PM PST

As a first step, how important is the layout of the wiring in the walls?

My house was built in 1914, and I only just recently had the last of the knob-and-tube outlets rewired while some other stuff was being worked on. There are still a few ceiling fixtures on the old wiring behind the plaster and lath on ceilings. And, of course, over the decades as the wiring has been replaced by various owners, it was tied in to whatever junction was most convenient to minimize cutting holes in the plaster without overloading circuits. One of my upstairs bedrooms, for instance, has some but not all outlets on the same circuit as the room below it.

I am planning on doing a room by room gutting over the coming years, which would take care of the remaining knob-and-tube, and while some basic electrical work is no problem for me - I can rewire an outlet or switch - doing homeruns back to the panel if I need to completely reorganize the wiring is something I'd want to hire a pro to do, which would definitely impact the budget.

Thanks for any advice or recommendations!

I have the worst gas-oven in the entire world. Can't keep the temp stable in any way! Or maybe an opportunity tu put my brain to work! 8266 + thermostat + step motor. Anyone has seen this before? Or tried?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 08:16 PM PST

I'm thinking is possible to sense the inner temp of the oven and put a step motor to rotate the gas knob or similar.

What type of light switches would work best for me?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 01:46 PM PST

I currently have the Phillips Hue light bulbs in all of my lamps. I want to convert my entire house, so I'd like something affordable but also quality. It would be nice if I could connect them to the Phillips hue hub, but I'm open to suggestions. I just don't wanna wind up with 15 hubs for a variety of smart devices when I'm done automating everything.

    Yale, August, smartthings, and compatibility?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 10:20 AM PST

I've been using an August 3rd Gen smart lock with a wifi bridge for about a year now. I like it, it works well for the most part aside from not auto unlocking about 1/4 of the time.

I have a smartthings hub with most of my devices connected to it and to Alexa.

I recently found a good deal on a yale lock, one of the TouchPad only models, yrd256. I want to switch that to my main door, and move my August lock to one I don't use as much and just have it on Bluetooth. Will I be able to use the August connect with the yale? I know they make a kit that bridges the August app and yale locks, but I don't know if it's a specific piece of hardware or not, what I saw looked like the regular connect.

If that doesn't work will my smartthings hub be enough to have a decent away from home experience with it?

Edit* it looks like I may have the base model of this lock with no module in it? I'll have to check when I get home. If that's the case then I might just see about getting the August kit for it - wish I could get just the piece that goes in the lock, but oh well.

Smartlock with auto-lock that only activates if door is actually closed?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 04:54 AM PST

TLDR: I'm trying a find a smartlock for my apartment door that will auto-lock ONLY if the door is actually closed.

I live alone in a 2-bedroom apartment and I AirBnB out the other room. I get a lot of idiots who come into my apartment and either leave the door wide open, ajar, or closed but not locked (despite the House Rules and aggressive signs posted everywhere).

I recently installed a door closer (one of those cylinders you normally see on a storm door) and this solved one problem. Then I ordered this smartlock (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08FD6Q323/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which solved another problem, since I can make it auto-lock after a certain time.

However, now the problem is that when people are holding the door open for whatever reason and then the auto-lock activates and extends the deadbolt, once they release the door, the cylinder tries to pull the door shut but the deadbolt simply ends up slamming into the door jamb since it's already extended.

Any product recommendations so that I can have a smartlock with electronic keypad, Wi-FI connectivity and, most importantly, the ability to detect whether the door is open/closed before deploying auto-lock?

Moved in not too long ago, didn't notice the gas knob...just assumed it was a normal fireplace because I didn't see those like gas logs that I've had in old rental properties. I put some small wood in there to get a baby fire going at first, and I noticed the gas hose. wanted to see if it was safe to just burn a normal fire.

IF it is safe, can i start it with the gas and then kill the gas? Thanks

Arduino, ESP, Alexa, NodeRed... Concepts and Equipment Mind Fuzziness - Can someone please Help?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 04:09 AM PST

Hi there, I've been trying to get into IoT and home automation for some time. My problem is to find a learning path that is suitable for my needs. The more I dig into it the more daunting it seems and I end up getting lost and quitting eventually.

So there are a few concepts that I'm trying to get a sense of but I don't know how they connect to each other: Arduino; Raspberry Pi (Trying to set this as an amazon echo substitute); ESP8266; NodeMCU; Alexa; Amazon Web Services; MQTT; ZigBee; NodeRed; Programming Languages (C, C++, Python, QT), etc...

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself but there's so much to learn and I really don't know how to group all this into a cohesive learning path! Thank you all in advance...

What's a good TV for an IoT control panel?

Hi, all. I just got a new home and I'm looking to buy a TV so that guests and family members can access an IoT dashboard on a Pi or other Linux device. Ideally, the TV would be small (20" or less), thin (so I can wall-mount it), touch-enabled, and wifi-enabled, but most of what I can find on Amazon is lacking one or more of these features. Can I get some recommendations?

Zigbee wall wart lamp switch with closed/open circuit sensing?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 11:02 AM PST

I'm controlling 2 floor lamps with zigbee plug in wall wart switches paired to an echo studio. Very simple. Previously I had 1 lamp on a TPlink-HS100 wifi switch and that's the problem. The TPlink had a feature I want back on zigbee.

This TPlink wifi switch allowed me to use the switch on the lamp to turn on it on. For example: lets say the wifi is down and I want to turn on my lamp. I could walk up-to the lamp, using the ole fashioned switch on the lamp itself, turn the lamp off, then back on and the TPlink wall wart would turn on the power to the lamp. This is a great feature for when I have problems with any point of the system or for any time someone doesn't want to use the automation.

I can't even find this feature listed in the description or tech specs of the HS100 so I have no idea what to search for or how to find a zigbee device that does the same thing.

Does this feature exist with zigbee plugin devices? What is it called, and does anyone know who makes one that does this?

    Looking for a Smarter Camera

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 12:23 PM PST

Right now I have a crappy chinese brand camera off of amazon that uses the MIPC app (which I hate, but that's a story for another day). I primarily use it to spy on my puppy. I cannot seem to find a camera that has everything on my wish list and I was hoping you kind folks could help me out.

What I am looking for (in order of importance to me):

    • The ability to speed watch recorded footage
    • Noise/Bark notifications
    • Motion notifications
    • Motion tracking (optional)

For the most part I've been able to find everything except for speed watching. I don't know if I'm not searching the right terms or if no one does it, but I can't imagine I'm the only one who doesn't want to watch 8 hours of footage at 1x speed??? Thanks in advance.
