Is there a way to add a capacitive button on my air purifier to Home Assistant?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 10:08 PM PST

I have a Blue 211+ air purifier with a capacitive buttonto switch modes. Is there a way I could add this to Home Assistant? Ideally I'd like for it to look the same on the outside and still allow me to use the button and track the state, but that seems unlikely. Other option is to use a SwitchBot I guess but that has its own issues.

Can anyone recommend a good NVR system for automation?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 05:09 PM PST

I want to self host a security system and I would like to be able to control it through Hubitat hub. I would like one that is quality and upgradeable, without breaking the bank for the buy-in. If I can use some of my old ADT equipment that would be nice, but I don't expect that to be possible. Any recommendations?

    DIY doorbell

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 06:46 PM PST

    Hey all.

I have a crappy generic doorbell which is well... disappointing. I also have several tapo cameras that are great.

I want to set one up outside, and have a door bell which when pressed will cause Google home devices to play a sound and also tell my best hubs to display said door camera, so I can look at a glance and see who is there. Possibly also setting it to trigger on movement since I'm on a top floor walk up and have a bunch of Amazon parcels left at my door meaning anyone their is either my trustworthy neighbour or a potential pirate (parcels have walked off before).

I was looking at ring or nest bells and they don't really fit the bill since I've no interest in paying subscriptions etc.

Maybe I can make this work with an Amazon dash button or another sort of button (suggestions) to trigger ifttt to play a sound on speaker group and display the camera? (Tapo cam works natively with nest hub)

    Any ideas or suggestions please?

Wemo light switches horrible piece of gear

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 06:47 AM PST

I have had a couple of Wemo Light switches setup for a few years now. I have to tell you that I cant wait to take these unstable pieces of junk out of their locations and throw them straight away. Whenever I run maintenance on my Unifi infrastructure at home I do a rolling upgrade of my access points. I try to keep up with updates about once a quarter but sometimes there are more updates to perform. Whenever I upgrade the firmware on an access point the Wemo disconnects from its current AP and will roam to my other AP. It will receive an IP from one of my DHCP servers as expected in the scope specified for the particular vlan that they should connect to. They receive an Ip as expected and respond to icmp request just fine. The issue is they become dissociated with the WEMO app. This is a complete pain in the ass because they are accessible on the network just not by WEMO any longer. The only fix is to reset to stupid piece of junk which is a complete unstable process and only works one out of 5 times I attempt this. It's time to move on from these Wemos. Complete garbage. Anyone else have issues with Wemo light switches? I've dreaded replacing them because the wiring is tight in one of the spots as it also feeds to a gfci back outside Lamp Post in my yard. These WEMOS are so unreliable. I hate them..

How could I set space heater to automatically start when I turn on shower?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 05:25 PM PST

I like to have a heater going when I get out of the shower so it's not freezing and I was just wondering if theirs any way I could somehow automate the ordeal. It would also help if it turned off again after a few hours.

I personally don't expect this to be possible but who knows? Maybe there is some creative solution.

Using HA to stream Nest doorbell feed

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 12:54 PM PST

As the title says I have been trying to find out (with no luck) if it is possible and if someone could tell me how to stream my nest hello doorbell feed directly to my TV's when the doorbell is pressed.

I have (3) TCL 5-6 series smart tvs, and one LG OLED.

Alternatively if that is not possible I have a few security cameras (wyze, kasa, nest) that I would be willing to install at my front door if the doorbell could trigger a feed from one of those to my TV's.

    Upgrade to Home Automation

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 08:44 PM PST

I've got a variety of smart devices around my house, most are Wi-Fi and connected to Alexa, but recently I've added some Sonoff temperature sensors, and it's had me thinking, whilst it's great to get point in time data by opening the app, but it would be good to be logging all of this so I can do analysis at a point in the future (e.g. What difference does installing that insulation make, etc.)

Would this be a use case to upgrade to Home Automation? Are there alternatives out there I should look at? Is there a cloud based equivalent?

    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Qolsys Motion Sensors zwave?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 07:49 PM PST

Are the Qolsys Alarm System motion detectors zwave or using a proprietary signal? I have a V1 panel installed in my home and not planning to use it, but was hoping to take advantage of the sensors already in place

I need some advices with Camera Object Detection

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 12:01 PM PST

    Hello, newbie here.

I have came across with this wonderful project (Frigate) for setting up object detection and alerting.

But, I have found out that Raspberry Pi 4 is not enought for handling 8x 1080p cameras (without lowering FPS below 5). In order to achieve this I need to offload TensorFlow computation to Coral.

Two solutions that I am considering:

    - Buy Raspberry Pi 4 (4 GB RAM) and Coral USB Accelerator

    - Buy Coral Dev Board

    - UPD: Minisforum GK41 (4 GB RAM) and M.2 TPU

If anyone have already built object detection with Coral devices, it would be nice if you could share advices and experience with me. Even if you have better suggestion/idea, I would love to listen.

    Thanks in advance.

Creating "virtual" 3 ways with C by GE switches

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 10:28 AM PST

I recently purchased 8 C by GE 4-wire dimmer switches to control my main living area. I am controlling conventional dimmable LED bulbs with them, on conventional circuits.

However, I have an old "dead" switch in the space that is on an unused circuit. I got to wondering whether I can put a smart switch here and then tie it into another smart switch in the room that's on an existing circuit, to make a new 3 way connection. I think of it like making a "slave" switch but without the wiring, just making a wireless connection between the two switches.

Has anyone done this before? Is it doable?

Please help m with SONOFF mini and countdown timer.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 03:17 PM PST

Please help m with SONOFF mini and countdown timer.

I bought a sonoff mini that I intend to use with the lights on the front porch, these lights are currently controlled by a countdown timer switch.

I want to be able to turn the lights on with Google home when away and also be able to do what I normally use the count down timer.

for example. I leave the house early when itis still dark outside, I just set the timer for 1 or 5 minutes. It also comes in handy when visitors are living the house at night, I can turn the outside lights from the timer for 5 minutes to let then get to their car.

This is the switch currently installed.

I am pretty handy with electric installations but this one got me thinking.

Can anyone please help me and show me how can I wire the timer with the sonoff mini?

    Someone suggested a parallel connection,

    Is this parallel circuit correct?

Am I not possibly getting double hot fed to the switches if both are closed at the same time?

Please take a look and let me know.

    I appreciate the help

Video doorbells: Are there “secure” options aside from HomeKit Secure Video?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 06:16 PM PST

So I'm wanting to start buy home automation products for my home and one of the things I'm looking at is a video doorbell.

Most everybody I know has one of the various Ring doorbells but I'm concerned due to the privacy issues regarding the police and neighbors using your video.

I'm pretty platform agnostic but it seems like HomeKit Secure Video is the only secure option I've found so far. The one video doorbell that looks to have HKSV is the bee Logitech and I've seen lots of complaints online so I'm hesitant to buy it.

Are there any other options for video doorbells that don't have the privacy issues you get with Ring?

    Thanks!

    Kasa Smart Switch wiring doublecheck

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 06:14 PM PST

I've wired up my share of smart appliances including a Sense energy monitor, a generator transfer, and done countless outlets, however I am not an electrician by trade.

I have a bedroom light that is wired with a "power into light" configuration, except there is a 3 Wire with ground running to a single switch. It is not a 2 or 3 way light. I imagine it was for the inclusion of a ceiling fan.

This diagram shows the situation (except for the power tap point part)

    https://i.stack.imgur.com/NDXAU.png

So 2 wire with ground running to the light from the supply, and 3 wire with ground running to a single switch.

I think I should be able to safely put a Kasa Switch there, as long as the neutrals are pigtailed together as shown in the diagram.

Can I get a double check on this wiring?

Programmable indicator light to show Ring alarm status

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 11:58 AM PST

I have a ring alarm and the latest alexa with zigbee hub. I'd like to be able to have a small indicator light in a couple discrete locations in the house near doors that would let us know the alarm is armed. Any suggestions on what products may be good for this? I don't want a typical 60w lightbulb. Think simple old school LED or maybe a low power night light. The ideal product would plug right into a receptacle.

The closest thing I've found so far is the HomeSeer Z-wave multi-sensor but at $60 this seems a bit expensive for what I'm looking to do. I'm also not sure if I could interface with it the way I'd like to assuming I can pair it with the ring hub. Any suggestions?

    door bell with google home

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 01:59 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

I'm looking for any way to connect my door handset bell with google home, something like "google home/alexa: hey, someone is outside".

I managed to open my front door over the network (sonoff SV, just connected buzzer button in parallel to L in and L out).

Since I can't hear any bell sound in the kitchen I'm looking for a way to get a notification on my google home (I'm using home assistant if it helps). Is there any module that can be triggered by connecting the bell in parallel to a module?

I want to make my geeni lights sync to darude sandstorm

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 05:26 PM PST

Hello all, I'm very new to home automation and I don't even really know if it's possible but I have some basic programming knowledge (in my second semester of a programming degree) and had this idea.

I have two Merkury/geeni lights in my bedroom and one in my closet, as well as an Echo Show I use to control them. So basically I want to be able to tell my alexa "it's party time" and have it play Darude Sandstorm and have the lights somewhat sync/flash to the music. I know how to make a routine through the Alexa app but I can't find a way to set up a custom "routine" so to speak for the lights to follow when this happens. I've seen some talk of using IFTTT to possibly make my own code but I don't even really understand how to use that platform or how it works. I'm willing to learn anything if it would help in this project however!

Any advice or tips or anything is much appreciated!

    Buying my first home

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 06:58 AM PST

I'm buying my first home in Baltimore County, MD. House was built in 1948. I want to add some practical automation to the house without breaking the bank. What are recommended projects?

Here's some background info. I have 2 unused raspberry pi 3's. I have 3 google home minis, a SharkClean robot. The house is 3 floors, a basement, with a bathroom and the washer dryer, the first floor with living room, kitchen and dining, a 2nd floor with 2 bedrooms, an office and a shared bathroom, and a detached garage. I have a iPhone, my girlfriend has an android phone.

I have a couple of ideas of things I want to add but feel free to recommend more.

    1. Smart locks. I am interested in the Augusta dead bolt, but open to others.

    2. I saw someone make a smart washer to tell them when to move the laundry from washer to dryer based on power draw. This would be very useful.

    3. I think I want a smart garage door as well. Though I can't remember if our garage is motorised or not.

Exterior key pad door lock to get in and out

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 04:14 PM PST

We need to be able to have a keypad lock to prevent a special needs child from exiting the house and wandering off. The problem I am running into is all the locks are designed to have a keypad on the outside and a thumb turn on the inside. I need something that is going to be secure on the outside and allow keypad access on the inside, I would prefer keypad access to both sides with an automatic lock feature. This doesn't have to be on the deadbolt, it can be on the regular lock.

We are also looking for some interior door locks to have key access to the laundry room, certain closets, etc. to prevent access and to provide safety.

Bonus, but not necessary, if we could see and control the locks over wifi, mostly just to do a quick check to make sure everything is locked and working.

We were using traditional measures like the sliding bolts and security chains, he can undo those now, even when placed high he just gets a chair and has figured them out.

    Similar to X10?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 03:17 PM PST

So this is a big of a frustration post, but I was wondering.. is there anything modern that has the simplicity of X10?

In my current place I decided to take the plunge and am using HomeSeer + Z-Wave, but keeping them working has been such a nightmare (culminating in failing to work mid-flood), that I am really missing the simplicity of 'set id on device by physical switch' and the stability of 'yes this will work when you need it after not touching it for months'.

I keep reading 'X10 is dead!', 'X10 is old!', but I have had really bad luck with smarter wireless technologies.

Sorry for the big of the vent. The original question is honest though, I really want something simple for controlling lights and outlets, that is set up and forget, and doesn't become a new 'there goes my weekend' hobby every few months.

Are there smart locks for sliding (patio) doors, yet?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 03:55 AM PST

I'm trying to find out if there are any smart locks for sliding doors / patio doors?

We have a Ultraloq Smart lock (and love it!) but it's a deadbolt. So that won't work on a sliding door (if we buy another).

Are there any other options out there, right now?

I'm not into a DIY - i would prefer to buy an existing product.

    Thanks kindly for any help!

(please please please have a product that's out there .. please please please)
