Any troubleshooting tips for smart plugs?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 05:23 PM PST

I have several smart devices (vacuum cleaner, Kasa smart Plug - work with SmartThings) and Philips Wakeup light - has its own app. Smart plug and vacumm cleaner used to work but now I cannot connect any of them to my WiFi. What usually happens is that after I provide my wifi details during setup I will get something like "failed to add the device". What's more confusing is that sometimes that smart device will look like it has connected to my wifi but I would still not see it in the app on my phone.

I've made sure to connect to my 2.5GHz WiFi and even turned off 5GHz radio on router - didn't help.

If you have any suggestions what I could do to diagnose the issue I would appreciate it a lot!

(My router is Netgear Nighthawk R7900P, phone: Google Pixel 3a)

    Smart Bulbs or Smart Switches?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:07 PM PST

Recently had all brand new electric put in to our new home. I'd like to make the house smart using smart lighting with a Google Home assistant setup for ease of use on managing rooms lighting and setting up automations, etc..

Is it better to have smart switches installed with standard OTC LED light bulbs or have smart light bulbs put in with standard OTC switches?

    Single-pole switch with Shelly 1L doesn’t work

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:44 PM PST

I have a single pole switch that controls a light. I installed a Shelly 1L device to the switch along with a neutral bypass near the light as I do not have a neutral wire.

I am able to connect to the Shelly device and control the light through that. However the single pole switch no longer works. If I remove the Shelly device, the original light switch works as expected.

Is there a setting or something I'm missing? I thought I could use the switch in conjunction with the Shelly device?

New Furnace - analyzing at energy usage

New Furnace - analyzing at energy usage

I had my furnace replaced this week. The old one was 18 years old (from 2002), and had a rated efficiency of 94%. The new one is rated 96.5%. Since the efficiency is so close, I wasn't sure I'd see much difference. This is my attempt to quantify the change.

    https://preview.redd.it/8ewxbv5ilbh61.png?width=710&format=png&auto=webp&s=eadd4b36b1db115226107c4f730583f624f8f9d9

The new furnace is more electrically efficient, although I'm not sure if there were jumper settings in the old furnace that could adjust (for example) fan speed when idle.

The percent heating duty cycle is also slightly lower for the new furnace (61% vs 67%). Meaning on a day where the exterior condition was about the same, it took 6% less heating time to maintain the same indoor temperature. But it's also very easy to mis-analyze percent duty cycle, since a 6% swing only represents 36 minutes, and it's easy to catch or miss a heating cycle at either end of the analysis period.

I tried to pick a time period between 10PM and 8AM because it is most likely to be a consistent comparison (not using the oven, similar misc heating sources).

    https://preview.redd.it/hxhyk1nmlbh61.png?width=817&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb6a7b27a36957d9c93e37327b28643f2c5b9b48

My setup: I have a wifi Radio Thermostat with an open local rest API to obtain thermostat conditions. That's how I'm getting the heating/idle duty cycle, and this data is push into InfluxDB and visualized in Grafana. I'm using CircuitSetup's current monitoring board to read energy usage on multiple branches of my electrical circuit breaker, and this is also being pushed into Influx.

I noticed that the new furnace short cycles much more (49 times vs. 37 transitions on the old furnace). I'm not sure what that means. The difference may be due to me disabling the second stage on the old furnace (blower fan starting to go bad).

    Remote Start Chevy

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:02 AM PST

We have a 2019 Chevy Equinox with myChevolet app for starting the vehicle remotely by phone. We also use the Alexa skill myChevolet and voice to start the car with a pin. Is there a way to start it with a routine that would click within the app to start and enter the pin. This way we could just say start the car VS now we have to say ask mychevy app to start the car then wait for prompt to say the pin code. Thank you for any advice.

Alexa, Sonoff Bridge and motion sensor

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 01:52 PM PST

Just got a Sonoff bridge and one of their motion sensors.

I'm trying to get the motion sensor to trigger a routine via Alexa, the routine works if I press play - but the sensor doesn't seem to trigger to routine.

Has anybody else experienced this or have any suggestions as to how to solve the issue?

    Connecting bulbs to Tuya

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 01:32 PM PST

I have ordered 2 GU10 LED spots that work with Tuya, but now I wanna connect them and it doesn't want to. I tried EZ-mode and AP-mode, somehow after 30 minutes one magically connected without me trying, and when I tried earlier it didn't do anything. Now I tried again because the second one wasn't connected and it put them both back in connecting mode because they're in the same ceiling lamp. Can anyone help?

Air purifiers. Does anyone use the wifi enabled Coway Airmega 400s in any home automation sort of way?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:25 PM PST

I live in wildfire land and I can tell you, the Coway Airmega 400 is just awesome for clearing out smoke. It does a wonder when I fire up the wok as well.

Does Anyone use their wifi enabled 400S in any way? Worth it? (thinking of buying another one; I like it that much). I am neither an Alexa nor Google person. Home Assistant on a pi with zwave is what most of my stuff is.

The only use case I can think of is as part of a bed time routine, and that would be to turn it on "high" for an hour before bedtime, then put it in low sleep mode. I can't imagine ever wanting to turn it on remotely when I'm not even home (it already has a smart feature to turn on when the smoke is bad, a great sensor, which I can tell kicks in when I burn something in the kitchen).

    Thanks!

Does the zooz zen21 switch turn off internal relay?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:35 AM PST

I want to be able to turn my smart bulb on/off via a switch without completely cutting its power. So far the only switch I've found that can do this is the Inovelli Red series but from reviews it seems those switches have some delays since they support multitap scenes. Zooz is regarded as one of the quickest Z-wave switches so does anyone have experience with controlling their smart bulbs with Zooz switches? Is there any perceivable delay?

August Lock applets in IFTTT stopped running

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:12 PM PST

Anyone have any IFTTT applets using August Lock as a trigger and are they running for you? I have two IFTTT applets where August Lock is a trigger. If the August lock unlocks, then it triggers to turn on a Kasa TP Link light. Also have one where if the door with the August is locked, then it turns off the Kasa light. Both of these applets stopped running on February 8th and I have been unable to get them running again. I've tried archiving them and recreating them, disconnecting the August Lock service from IFTTT and re-establishing the August Lock service connection with IFTTT. Even did a factory reset of the lock in my house and set it up again just in case it's a local issue. The August Lock activity logs in IFTTT show no applets running after February 8. I reached out to August lock support but they have not been helpful. I feel like it's a communication issue between August Lock and IFTTT where August Lock is not sending the information to IFTTT so it triggers the applet, or IFTTT is not receiving the info if sent by August Lock. Hoping someone might have an IFTTT applet using August lock that they can check to see if running. Thanks

Creating an automated system which is safe from me tampering with it.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 05:34 AM PST

Title is misleading, but couldn't think of anything else, english is not my native language. I've been a web-dev for around 8 years. I also study electronics as a hobby so know about microcontrollers (Arduino,ESP8266) and Rasperry Pi and such.

For some reason I can't think of a way of doing it. Maybe because my brain is currently pretty fried from work.

What I am trying to accomplish: I have a safe which can be opened with a number. I need ideas about creating software that would generate me a number, I would change the safe code, and then I wont have access to said number for x period of time. The software would have it. After x amount of time, it will give me it again, and possibly let me change it if after some time I'll start to remember it. Also the data should be persistent, meaning code can be stopped and started.

The only person the data needs to be protected from is myself. So in essence I'm asking how to create a program that stores data I can not access, even if I modify the code. There isn't anything valuable in the safe.

Why: currently I'm using my spouse and/or brother for it. It would be nice if I automated this. If it fails it's okay, as there is a backup key which overrides the digital security lock.

I thought about an encrypted linux os with root account disabled, the program would run at startup. After I'd have everything set-up i'd lock myself out by disabling the root and have a user that would only have access to say web service where the code can be managed.

Now that I wrote it all out I got another idea, placing an wifi/bluetooth microcontroller inside the safe as the electromagnetic waves should penetrate the steel, that way I would literally have no physical access to modify the code or view the data. And the beauty is, I wouldn't even need to encrypt the data. Only thing I'd have to worry about is powering the microcontroller.

or what do you guys think, any other ideas?

August wifi smart lock vs Schlage Encode

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:19 PM PST

I'm super torn between these 2... August looks very sleek, easier to set up and has proximity unlock. But they seem to have more negative reviews/complaints about software bugs. Schlage looks ok, is more reliable and integrates better with Ring (I used their security system). Which one should I go with??

Which system to buy for a large concrete home.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:16 AM PST

I am buying a three story 3000+ sq ft home with concrete walls. I'm starting to look into home monitoring. My main goal is to know when a window or door on the first two floors of the house are open from an alert on my phone. I am not at all interested in a 3rd party monitoring my home.

My preliminary research seems to indicate that z-wave and zigbee are the primary protocols. Lots of people seem to prefer z-wave, but I'm worried about the 4 hop limit in a large house with concrete walls. Would zigbee be better in this case?

It seems like the main components I need are a hub and sensors for each door/window (I don't know what this sensor is called - an open/closed sensor?). Does this sound correct?

I assume the hub can be setup to send alert notifications to an iOS app over the home's wifi connection. Is that true? Any recommendations on what hub to purchase?

Finally, where is the best place to buy the components from? Amazon?

About myself, I've been a professional programmer for 25+ years and have lots of electrical, raspberry pi, Arduino, etc. experience. So I'm not worried about the DIY aspect of this.

Getting Started - Energy Monitoring Triggers

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 05:30 AM PST

Hello! I'm new to this sub and have some smart plugs, some Alexa devices, several Raspberry Pis and Arduinos... but no hub or cohesive home automation system. I would like to add some energy monitoring outlets to notify me (and my lazy kids!) when things like the dryer (gas) and dishwasher are done running. Bonus if I can add more energy monitoring/reporting in the future just to track what our usage is.

I'm a developer so the more I can hack / play the more fun. I'm also a cheapskate and was hoping I could get away with something like the TP-Link KP115 instead of the HS110. I have a few TP-link smart plugs already.

Main questions are - what software/hardware is a good place to start? Are there options to avoid vendor lock-in? Am I missing any obvious options for lower-cost energy monitoring, wi-fi enabled smart plugs?

Thanks! Looking forward to getting started. With some home renovations in the plans, I can see myself going down this rabbit hole pretty far!

Lutron Caseta Dimmers - Light flickers and then turns on

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:31 AM PST

Basically, I just installed some lutron dimmers in my home and I have one that I cannot figure out. I'm sure it's the bulb. However, I'm trying not to go out and buy a whole new fixture. I was hoping one of you guys had a solution. What happens is when I turn off and or on the light it'll flicker twice quickly and then turn on. Obviously it doesn't dim, but I don't really care about that. I just want it to turn on without flickering. The figures installed are these from home depot:

ETi 11 in. 1-Light White Octagon LED Outdoor Flush Mount Porch Deck Light 830 Lumens 3000K 4000K 5000K (6 Pack)-54466201-6PK - The Home Depot

They came with the house and I have two. I'm hoping that maybe something like this would help, can anyone confirm?

Aeotec Bypass for Nano Dimmer, Load Resistor and Dummy Load for dimmer, TRIAC dimmer switches to fix Light Flickering Issue: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

    Thanks in advanced!

Looking for ways to use bluetooth audio in flexible ways

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 01:14 PM PST

    Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone here has managed to set up some sort of bluetooth hub with their whole-home audio system.

What I'd like to accomplish is: 1) having all of my Echos connected to a device with bluetooth so that the microphones will still be active, but their audio can be played over another system with distributed audio, and 2) be able to play an audio stream from that same system to those echos in the opposite direction. So essentially each echo on that floor will listen and respond simultaneously while also allowing me to broadcast a music stream over those same echos (the music stream would be interrupted whenever they speak, but the other speakers connected to the distributed audio system would not, depending on how I mix the audio sources).

Not sure if I'm being absolutely clear or if I have a clear idea in my head, but if I need to clarify anything, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance!
