Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:07 AM PST I use Aqara temp sensors to monitor and alert if any of my freezers fail. (This automation has saved a freezer full of dog meat from spoiling when one got unplugged, so I'm quite fond of it) The CR2050 ECR2050 has the same diameter and voltage as the ubiquitous cr2032/2016 batteries, but is thicker. This does mean that the back of the cover may not fit, but that's rarely important. The capacity is around double, and whilst they do cost more, the hassle of not having to change them as often is worth it to me. [link] [comments]
Your Liftmaster / Chamberlain garage door might have a hidden game in it Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:47 PM PST I've been digging around to see if I can hit my garage door api locally when I found this page: http://<your garage door ip>/about which brings up this: https://i.imgur.com/WqECrhz.png (I've blacked out all my sensitive details) Looking through the source code I see this script in the head: Notice the easter part near the end. Basically when that function is triggered 8 times it takes you to the url: http://<your garage door ip>/game.html The easter egg counter is attached to clicks on the logo. Unfortunately, going there brings up nothing so I'm wondering if this was a feature that was removed. Might be worth trying your own to see if you have the game built into your garage door opener. :D As a side note, the only working endpoints I could find are:

Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:08 PM PST TL;DR: Alexa NVR + Solid PoE doorbell + Long Rang IR Camera Originally, I wanted to use UniFi protect for this project, but it doesn't have all the things I want. I need: An Alexa enabled NVR with a solid app An outdoor camera with long IR range. I want this to be PoE because I dont have a typical doorball in my house. And a doorbell that will work with Alexa, as well as the NVR. (Maybe the doorbell can ring my Alexa's? I wanted this originally to ring my Panasonic Hybrid phone system, but realized its not viable unless I go with a Panasonic doorbell, which don't have the features I need.) Thank you for your help! using aeotec bypass with an floor standing lamp, no clue how Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:26 PM PST I just tried installing an inovelli red connected to an outlet i want to put a regular lamp plugged into. The lamp only has one led, so the load is less than 25w so i need to pick up an aeotec bypass. I am very confused on how to install the bypass though as the instructions i found are only for built in fixtures and i would be installing it on a floor standing lamp. anyone know how to do this? or do i just need to get a higher watt bulb? Tv backlight that syncs with movies and whatever you are watching Posted: 03 Mar 2021 05:34 PM PST Been trying to find out what people are using that syncs the color of their tv with the backlight LED. I know of DreamScreen but I know they abandoned the project. So any info would be helpful. I currently have a 85 inch Samsung Q60T TV with a Samsung HW-Q70T sound bar. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:47 PM PST Basically I want my Google Hub to tell me the traffic conditions for a commute to my sons daycare and I want it to tell me at 7:00 AM Monday - Friday. I was messing around with routines but I couldn't figure it out [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:41 PM PST I don't know why these are no longer available at best buy or amazon. Model number is GP-U999SJVLBAA. Why would Samsung just stop selling motion sensors? I have one of them now and it works well with turning on and of lights using the smarthings app and mostly wemo switches. I also have some philips hue motion sensors for controlling hue systems, but I don't think those work with smartthings to control other devices outside of philips hue. I don't even see my hue motion sensors as an option to use in the smartthings ap to build an automation. So I guess I'm looking for an alternative to the Samsung motion sensor that will work as well with alexa and smarthings, wemo etc. I really liked the size and looks of the Samsung and it was responsive too. Posted: 03 Mar 2021 06:48 PM PST Buddy has been helping us out so figured I'd get him some home automation stuff. Already has a raspberry pie running some lights around his TV, and some other little things so I know he likes it. This is what I'm thinking. He can setup home assistant as the brain Nortek zigbee/zwave so there is options for whatever protocol he wants. Then one or two widgets to get him started. Sound like a plan? Looking for some recommendations for a few switches/relays/whatever to get started. Preference on zwave/zigbee/other protocol? Thanks [link] [comments]
Help automating my snake's enclosure? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 04:26 PM PST Hello! I have a pet ball python with two heat lamps both on manual dimmers that I adjust based on time of day and the enclosure's temperature. Having to constantly pay attention to his enclosure temperatures is not ideal, and I would love to automate this. However, I'm very new to all this and not sure how I should go about it. I was wondering if I could buy something like this for each lamp, have thermometers in the enclosure, and have the lamps dim automatically based on time of day and temperature in the enclosure. Would this be possible? How would I go about this? Could I somehow just get a RPi and have that communicate with this dimmer? Thank you so much! [link] [comments]
Suggestions for YoLink Pushbutton Switch/Contact Sensor Module Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:54 PM PST I have been talking to a product designer at YoLink (http://www.yosmart.com) about building a battery-operated pushbutton switch/generic input sensor module. It would work in conjunction with their hub, like their other sensors/devices. He is looking to build a business case for the switch and would like to get a list of possible uses for it. We've already discussed putting a switch on a table, to be able to trigger HA routines easily. Since I have a number of Alexa devices, I mentioned putting one on a nightstand to run Alexa routines without having to say anything and maybe wake someone up. We've also discussed making the switch respond to three different actions: single tap, double tap and long press, or maybe putting two switches in one case, like the IKEA switch. The switch would also have a set of contacts that can be wired to an external switch, contact sensor, etc. He's interested in any suggestions you have about interesting uses. [link] [comments]
Looking for a nice decora “scene controller” Posted: 03 Mar 2021 05:37 PM PST Use case: I'd like to be able to select some preset scenes for our living room with a wall-mounted control. This is the one room in our house with "smart" lights, so this wouldn't carry any load (the lights are always powered). I am using Home Assistant, so it must work with that. Z-Wave is preferable, but WiFi is ok as long as it is locally controlled and doesn't doesn't rely on the cloud. Leviton has a 4-button controller that I'd use, but it relies on their cloud service afaik. There are some that I've seen by Cooper/Eaton with 5 buttons, but it seems those are for enabling different zones. I really just want mutually exclusive "scenes". I don't care if it is an actual "Z-Wave scene" per-protocol. I just need to know "button 5 was pressed". Bonus points if there is an alternative press such as double tap or hold down. Any recommendations? [link] [comments]

Feit electric Color changing light bulbs Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:34 AM PST I hope this is a good forum to post in. There is a Feit sub but there is barely any traffic in it. I also reached out to Feit's customer service a week ago and never heard back. So I got these lights installed (four total bulbs) about 2 weeks ago. For the first few days the lighbulbs paired up and worked flawlessly. I left the power on and turned the lights off through the app as apposed to turning them off by the light switch. On the third day or so one of the light bulbs quit pairing. I would try and readd it but I kept getting "network error" and "device timed out". I figured since the room is far away from my router I should get a repeater. I reconnected all the lights to the wifi repeater and once again they worked flawlessley for a few days. On the day before they all quit working I noticed a lack in performance. I would change the color and there would be a delay in the transition of color. Sometimes refreshing the app would fix it and the colors would change but it would take a while. I left the lights on the same color and turned them off at the switch. The nextday I went to turn them back on at the switch and all the lights were unpaired. Well I figured that since the manual says that an interuption in power can cause them to be unpaired. I went through the soft reset and the hard reset troubleshooting several times and can never get all four lights to pair. At best, I will get 3 but most of the time its just two. Never all four. Its also a different light that doesn't pair each time. I checked my network and im running a 2.4ghz. I also did a speed test on my laptop which is in the same room as the lights. Does anyone have any pointers? I am awaiting some non smart color changing bulbs from amazon as I only need the color change feature and none of the automation features. I really wanted this product to work but I guess im just out of luck. [link] [comments]

How to go about building a custom zigbee device? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:18 AM PST So here's the deal - I have an RF remote control for the building entrance, and I want to use it too automate opening and closing of the building door. (because of rolling codes, I can't use an RF transmitter directly.) So, the idea is to open up the remote, expose the contact points for its four buttons, connect some sort of dry contact relay to them, use something to control them, and then expose this as a Zigbee device. I don't have an idea what to use for this, so I'm looking for guidance there. Little googling that I did looks to point me in the following direction (which might be completely wrong):
I'd like for all of this to take as little space as possible, as i'd like to print a case for it, and connect it to a mains outlet via a standard USB charger. So here are just some of the questions I have:
This thing - https://www.tindie.com/products/a_lab_technology/zigbee-4-channel-relay/ would probably do what i want out of the box, but unfortunately it isn't available. [link] [comments]
How to bypass standby mode and have my TV boot up automatically after triggering a Wemo switch? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 08:37 AM PST I have a TCL TV that I cannot bypass standby mode on (called customer support). My issue is that I flip my switch (giving my TV power), but then I need to press the power button on my remote to actually get my screen on. I'd like to somehow bypass that second step, but can't figure out a method. Any suggestions? I am using Homekit, if that means anything. [link] [comments]
Possible to connect Aqara devices to Amazon Echo without a hub or other zigbee communication device? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 11:05 AM PST So I'm a bit of a HA noob, and I bought a few Aqara thermometers/humidifiers hoping it'd be possible to quickly connect them to my Echo, only to find out they're designed to work with hubs (which seem to be in the ~100eur price range from what I can see). I did some googling and all I can find out that you need either:
to even be able to pair the device. Is there really no way to pair the device without some sort of a hub device? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2021 10:41 AM PST Switching from SmartThings since they've dropped support for my hub and now need new glass break and open/close sensors. I tried the Sengled but they are garbage and Aqara requires a separate hub. [link] [comments]

Missing top on Lutron Serena honeycomb shades? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:32 PM PST Spent a boatload (well for me - guess it's relative in this sub...) on some Lutron Serena shades months ago and finally just had them installed. My first impression isn't great, but I wanted to check here to see if perhaps something is missing or not installed correctly? The mounts have plastic tabs that stick out beyond the shade housing? It looks really junky - is it supposed to look like that? Furthermore there are no tops! I am admittedly fairly tall, but when I walk by them I can see the batteries and the motors etc. Isn't there supposed to be a cover? Nothing left in the boxes after install though... A couple of them sag a bit on one side when in the open position. Will gravity work that out eventually or is it an issue? [link] [comments]
Pulling data from an Android app running in vmware--possible? Posted: 03 Mar 2021 02:49 PM PST I was an early adopter of one of the home smart water metering systems and, long story short, their once completely free API (that I put lots of time into helping write and share code around) switched over to a monthly subscription. The company is still happy to provide "real-time" data (0-60 seconds, that is) through their iOS/Android app for free, but any details of water usage past 1 minute old is no longer accessible without a subscription. The company had originally planned a path for allowing users to capture and store data locally (so as to not burden the company's bandwidth or servers), but those plans vaporized at roughly the same time that the subscription based service popped up. My solution has been to run this product's Android app in vmware (itself run within an Ubuntu vm), and use ImageMagick to collect screen captures every second showing what the app is recording (basically gallons of water being used any given second). Subsequent to that, I use Tesseract to OCR and "textify" that actual gallons of usage data from the app. All of this is easily scripted and works well, but it is a little bit processor intensive. I'm curious if there's any way to do the same thing by reading data packets that are coming into the App? Presumably somewhere in that stream of data is a gallons of usage number--would that be unencrypted and somehow readable? Though still requiring a script to sift through data 24/7/365, at face value this seems like it should require far less processing and, ultimately, less power consumption? [link] [comments]
Cloud-based vs non-cloud based automation solutions Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:40 PM PST Way back in the day, I bought a Wink hub and slowly started to add Wink-compatable switches, outlets, lights, etc. As time wore on, Wink became less and less reliable, to the point that I switched to SmartThings. Now, I'm considering an overhaul of my home's light switches, but I don't want to buy and install dozens of pricey switches that rely on a cloud-based server to work. I've had a few cloud-reliant appliance stop working because the company went out of business and shutdown their servers. For instance, I'm not sure how financially stable WeMo is as a company. it is owned by Belkin, which I trust, but then again, Belkin should shut it down. Its products are HomeKit compatible, but what happens if their servers stop working in 4 years. Will the switches still be able to be controlled remotely? And there are plenty of other products that have similar issues. I'm curious what other people think of this issue. It is something to be concerned with? Does a hub plus HomeKit/Alexa/ZWave solve this issue? [link] [comments] |
