    UK Doorbell Recommendations

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 11:12 AM PST

    Hey

I have been using Nest for a while now (3 cams + doorbell) but I am absolutely sick of them. They drop out so often. I have had to buy wifi extenders and put them literally on the other side of the wall for them to work consistently.

Now my doorbell is having issues dropping out, and I am ready to just move away from Google, as their software/hardware gets worse every day.

Anyway, I am looking for some recommendations for a doorbell, and outdoor cameras. My current setup is:

    - SmartThings hub
    - RaspberryPi with Homebridge
    - HomeKit mostly used for controlling things

24/7 recording is a must (not just events - I don't trust software enough to catch all events). Cloud storage is a huge plus too.

    Thanks :)

    First Time DIY Smart Home

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 11:57 AM PST

Has anyone ever heard of someone DIYing their smart assistant? I'd like to use a NAS for storage and have a custom smart assistant that will show my smart doorbells video feed and do general smart assistant functions. I just don't have ANY pre-existing knowledge in coding let alone smart home coding. Any suggestions on a starting point at least? I could always go in more detail if asked, but at this point I'm mainly focused on having something that works and then getting it to be pretty/bells and whistles.

SmartThings ADT hub going offline in a few months - any suggestions for a relpacement?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 02:27 PM PST

Got an email from SmartThings about the ADT hub going down in a few months so I need to find a replacement. I've filled out their form online about getting a refund for the carbon monoxide sensors, smoke detectors, and window/door sensors. Can't find the original receipt for the base system (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SmartThings-Wireless-Security-Detector/dp/B077JRBSSZ) that has the hub along with two door/window sensors and the motion detector, so I don't know that I will get reimbursed for that.

I have dabbled in Home Assistant. Used to have a virtual machine on my desktop, but have recently reinstalled it on a Raspberry Pi. I like the customization possibilities with this, but also don't like how hard it is to do some things on this system. I work in IT and can figure some things out, but have enough things going on that I might want a system that is easier to add future devices, scenes, automations, etc. I would need to get a Z-wave usb stick to get all my GE switches and plugs on the system.

I have looked into Hubitat and it seems to have a loot of good features. I like how most of the things on it run locally and don't have to rely on others services for things to work.

Possibly another SmartThings hub? (that won't go obsolete in a few years so I have to do this all over again)

    List of devices:

    • GE Z-wave dimmers, plugs
    • Orbit zoned sprinkler system and timers
    • Eero routers
    • Ring doorbell
    • Schlage front door lock
    • Ecobee thermostat and temperature sensors
    • ADT smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, window/door sensors, and water sensors (these are most likely not going to link to any smart home systems, but at least they work by themselves even if I can't get notifications on my phone. also can replace them with others if the refund ends up going through)
    • Amcrest security system DVR

Any suggestions on what move to make?

    Cat flap with mouse detection

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 10:25 PM PST

    Hi guys

So I am on the hunt for a cat flap, or some way to modify an existing one, so that it will recognize and lock out the cat when carrying prey.

I have seen a few articles/websites about this, but the few that are commercialized are preorder type deals, with no expected date and few details.

Are any of you guys able to point me in the right direction? I would be somewhat comfortable making this myself from RaspberryPi or Arduino, but not coding it from scratch.

I should say that I am situated in Denmark

    Thanks in advance

Double gang / 2gang switch recommendation?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 01:04 PM PST

I'm looking for a 2 gang smart switch for my new build shed to control the inside and external floodlight. There are lots on Amazon which have decent reviews but struggling to find one that works with Smart Life / Tuya as that's what all my existing smart plugs are. Cheers.

Edit: To be clear, this should be a physical wall mounted switch that I can manually press as well as control via Smart Life / Tuya.

I need to make a long zigbee hop, possibly with sonoff s31 lite modules

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:27 PM PST

I have several sonoff s31 lite zigbee switches on my network with Slaesh's CC2652RB controller and zigbee2mqtt, and it all works great. My network map is solid and reliable. However, I have this one hop that I need to make to an outbuilding that is just on the fringe of coverage, and there is no power between the two buildings.

Is there any way to make the range of these modules a little bit better? Perhaps I could solder on some sort of external antenna?

Or, are there any range extenders that are known to have exceptionally great long range?

How can I use a smart relay to control the speed of an inline duct booster?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:03 PM PST

I have an imbalance in my HVAC system where too much air goes to the first floor and not enough to the top floor (summer only).

I'm going to install an inline booster fan to the ductwork leading to the upstairs, but I have two problems:

    1. I only want the booster fan to be on when the furnace fan/blower is on.
    2. In the winter, the booster fan should only be turned on low, just enough to make up the airflow restriction that it causes by being inline, as if it wasn't there. In the summer, it should run on high.

So that leads me to my two questions:

    1. How can I reliably detect when the main blower is on?
    2. How do I control the speed of the booster fan? E.g. with a "dual speed" fan like this. A bunch of the booster fans I've seen on Amazon have speed control as fine as 10 steps, but I can't figure how I'd change that with a relay or smart device. Would I have a better shot buying a booster fan that doesn't have speed control and using a relay to modify the power sent to it to decrease speed? I wouldn't want to try to make a fan do something it wasn't designed for, this will be in a flammable attic, after all.

Zigbee replacement for (fluorescent) tube lighting

Most tube lighting is now days LED technology. Are there any Zigbee tubes on the market? I tried to google, but could not find any.

Power 12V or 24V LED strips without unsightly power supplies...?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 08:22 AM PST

I have a small (3-1/2' x 14', or 1m x 4m) kneewall area of my home that I'm getting ready to be a little hideaway/play area for my young son, and a finished storage area when he grows out of it. It will also serve as a little home automation sandbox for me... I'm planning on experimenting with individually-addressable LED strips in there.

It's down to the studs, currently, and I'm going to be adding outlets, insulation, then carpet and wall paneling. I'd like to figure out a way that I can wire either 12V or 24V DC power to one of the upper corners such that I don't have an ugly plug-in power supply I have to attached to a wall or otherwise try to hide. What creative ways have some of you used to power your LEDs unobtrusively?

Eventually I'll be using what I've learned to run permanent holiday lighting outside the house. Longer runs might require 24V, so I might just start experimenting with that now to get familiar with some hardware.

    External Soffit LED Lighting failing

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:23 PM PST

I have < 2 year old external LED soffit lighting (model below) on my new home. It is controlled by a Lutron smart switch (3 way with a remote switch).

In 2 years, 3 LED lights have failed. The start by flickering and then eventually just go to a low glow and die. The same electrician did the other 24 houses in this neighborhood and used the exact same lights. No failures in neighbors.

    I suspect the smart switch.

Anyone else have a similar experience or suggestions?

Roller Shade Driver w/Tuya + Solar

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 02:38 PM PST

I think the Zemismart is almost exactly what I want from a roller shade driver: retrofit on my existing pull chain shades, Tuya for smarthome integration (I'm on Smartthings planning to switch to Homeseer soon for better local control), and solar for long-term power handling. I can't seem to figure out how to get the wifi product with the solar panel, though - anyone know if that's possible? I'd happily buy the solar panel separately, but I can only find it bundled with their Bluetooth unit.

    Smart Button (smart things)

Was wondering if smart buttons can pair to Alexa and control any brand through her or if it can only be specific brands (if that even makes sense)

I picked up a air purifier from costco its great does its job. Only gripe is that it is strictly manual on off with three levels. Anyone messed with one of these to make it kick on and off with a timer?

    MyQ Garage Door opened itself?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 04:01 PM PST

Hey guys, I've got a Chamberlain MyQ garage door that's paired to their HomeKit MyQ Gateway. This is then directly added to Homekit. I'm also running Homebridge to connect my SmartThings to Homekit but MyQ isn't talking to either of those things.

Like a month ago I got a notification my garage door had opened. I walked out to the garage and sure enough it was open. I immediately texted my girlfriend who was at work to ask if she opened it (she's a guest on the Home in Homekit), she did not. So I go to log into the MyQ app and get an error that I can't log in. I look into it and the password on my account is old and 100% leaked, and eventually am able to log in with my credentials and I change the password to a long, unique password.

Fast forward to today, I get another notification that my garage door opened. I go look, and this time it's opened about 9 inches and stopped. I again go to log into my MyQ account in the app, and receive an error that the service is down. Now, 2 hours later, I'm able to log in to the app and looking at history I can see the door opened, but it doesn't tell me the source (e.g. a remote, MyQ, Homekit, etc).

I've double checked the garage door is NOT in SmartThings, is NOT in Homebridge, and is NOT connected to any Homekit automations.

Any ideas? Anywhere I can see the source of the open trigger? This is pretty concerning.

    Z-wave.me ZME_WALLC-2 and Hubitat

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:17 AM PST

    Hi

I bought a bunch of WALLC-2 switches (the sticker on the back of them say WALLC-S alltough that seems to be a mains powered version?) and have included one on my Hubitat. Secure inclusion didn't work so I used unsecure which worked right away.

No matter what I do though it doesn't seem like Hubitat is picking up any activity from the switch. I've tried both the generic z-wave switch and generic z-wave scene controller (plus a bunch of others). I also found a custom driver that was made for it.

There's no activity in the logs when pushing any buttons. I would've assumed that even if it is not supported, the basic on/off would still work? Or is it not a standard "code" they send for those basic operations?

Smart locks, would you dare create an automation for it?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:58 AM PST

So in my quest to make coming home from work as easy as possible I created a routine using IFTTT and Alexa to unlock my door when I pass by my motion sensor on the outside of my home. I tested it with one on the inside first and it unlocked in 5 seconds. Which is perfect since that's about the same time it'll take me to reach the door from where I have the sensor placed.

Now I only have this scheduled in a 10 minutes span in which I will get home from work like 90%+ of the time. I'm sitting here thinking this is not that big of a deal since I'm not even really concerned about security in my area. But would this be considered too risky for most of you guys? Would this open me up to any other security problems or is it no more riskier than already owning a smart lock to begin with?

TL:DR I created an automation to unlock the door for myself for when I get home from work. But should I disable it because it's too risky?
