Solar powered (with battery) landscape lighting relay?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 04:01 PM PST

I am thinking about building a solar powered (with battery) outdoor lighting solution. If I wanted to connect the light on/off feature with 12V power and controlled via Z-wave, what would be the best method? I assume some sort of Z-wave relay would be the obvious choice but which one? Would live in a water "tight" outdoor box with the battery.

Need help designing a custom doorbell circuit

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 10:51 PM PST

Hi there. I'm not sure if you'd consider this strictly automation, but this is the closest subreddit I've found where this isn't outwardly shunned.

I've modified my home's doorbell circuit to add a light in parallel with the doorbell chime, so that I can see when someone's ringing the bell, for various reasons. Here is the current circuit.

This technically works, however the issue is that the light only stays on for as long as a visitor holds the doorbell button, which is often not nearly long enough for the light to be effective.

In fact, the light is an old timey rotating emergency light, so I think the motor in it actually draws more current than a simple light bulb or LED, and the combination of the converter and motor spin up time, means it only really works if the button is held for significantly longer than the average doorbell press. Interestingly, the converter seems to have a bit of a capacitance to it, because the light activates sooner if the button was pressed for a while in the past few seconds, but only activates after a short delay if the button hasn't been pressed in a while.

I'm not versed enough in electrical engineering to figure this out by myself. So for the electrical gurus out there, what are my options for adding a delay such that the light stays on for a short (ideally roughly configurable) period after the button is pressed?

My uneducated guess is that I either A) need some sort of transistor in the current circuit, or B) need to abandon directly including the light in the doorbell circuit and instead use the doorbell pulse as a signal for triggering a relay of some sort.

Of course one solution could be introducing some sort of logic board, but that seems way overkill for my purposes.

However I have very little idea what I'm talking about, so any advice is very appreciated! Thanks.

    Alexa-Remote2 update

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 12:00 PM PST

    Hi all.

If you are using Alexa and NodeRED, you probably came across alexa-remote2 node. Unfortunately, Amazon API had breaking changes and the node no longer have all features working. Thankfully, it had been forked recently and we can again enjoy the functionality of this great API set.

I have updated the article with instructions on how to change over the to node-red-contrib-alexa-cakebaked so you can enjoy your existing flows without breaking changes. If you are new to Alexa and NodeRED - everything else in the tutorial applies as the functions and the name of the nodes remains the same:

Weird problem with Hue full color BR30 bulbs

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 04:15 PM PST

I've got 30 or so Hue bulbs in the house so far. Set up into groups/rooms of 4-6. Today I replaced all my switches with non-dimming Lutron Caseta. (Would've used Philips dimmer switches but they stick out and look weird). All the hue bulbs/rooms work fine except one group which happens to be the only ones that are full color (rest are white spectrum). For whatever reason, even when lights are one and switch works fine the Hue app can't connect to those bulbs any more. What gives? Any ideas? I tried deleting them and using serial number to reinstall them but now Hue can't find the bulbs at all.

Any way to integrate Lutron switch (on/off) and Hue bulb (colors) in one app/button/etc?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:25 PM PST

I can integrate both the switches and bulbs with individual apps or a single hub like SmartThings but I have to switch between controls to do any control. I'd like to put the lights on one button control — on / off / color — with the on/off being at the switch (Lutron). Possible?

    Bathroom automation

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 09:08 AM PST

I have following „problem". In my bathroom are two hue play lightbar and one hue motion sensor. (AppleTV as Homekit center) Normal lightswitch is used only for the fan. I use a homekit automation to switch on the light if there is motion and after 30/45sec (automation checks every 3 sec if there is a motion, if is: wait until no motion is detected) without motion turns of the light.

So, if i take a shower. My motion under the shower will not be recognised (not acurate) and i'm in the dark shower…. Not so cool.

How can i handle this to set up a automation for my bathroom? Any sugestions? I think there is no possibility to deactivate the motion sensor with a automation in the homekit app? My there are some great solutions around.

    Thanks in advance

Connecting to a USB device remotely from my PC?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 08:24 AM PST

Hi, I have a CyberPower UPS in my basement utility closet (cable modem and router, etc.). It has a USB port for UPS settings, viewing log, etc.

It's quite far from my desktop PC. Maybe 40 feet directly (radio) but more like 80+ if I tried to lay a super awkward USB cable all the way there (from home office down hallways and stairs, etc.).

What can I do to effectively have my PC think it's a "simple" USB device connected to it, but do it remotely? Some details:

    • It's a Windows 10 Pro PC
    • There is a LAN hardware router switch right in the utility closet, so hooking into the house LAN would be easy. My PC is hardwired into the same LAN.
    • I'd prefer not to expose it to the entire internet if possible, though (lol). Is there a way to do it without the LAN at all? ...
    • Are there simple radio / zigbee / zwave / WiFi / whatever devices such that I can plug one dongle into the UPS's USB and another into my PC's USBs? So that when both dongles are on, the PC thinks it's a simple straight-up USB device connected to it.
    • The UPS docs don't give any specs on the type of USB port. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a version 1 and that's fine because it's just to adjust settings and view logs, etc. The actual port on the back of it is one of those printer (D) shaped ports. I bought it 4 years ago.

I'm not sure how to go about this. Ideas? Thanks if you can help!

    Robo vacuum suggestions?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 11:25 AM PST

I know there are a lot of threads about this, but I didn't see anything that matched my conditions. My two biggest things are avoiding getting stuck under furniture (2.75" clearance), and avoiding the toys my dog refuses to tidy up.

Floospace: single story 500 sq feet

Easy pet and long human hair cleanup

Slimmer than 2.75 inches, or smart enough to avoid getting stuck

Avoid pet toy and shoe lace obstacles

Wifi connected is not necessary, but google assistant is preferred

    Price: cheaper is better

    Edit:

hardwood floor with a colorful carpet

washable filter (I don't want to worry about trying to buy a new filter)

    Edit 2:

From the research I've done it looks like there is a tradeoff between price, sensors, and slimness. Cheaper vacumms are slimmer, but lack the obstacle avoidance sensors. Expensive models are thicker, but better at avoiding obstacles. I guess I need to decide if I would rather sweep under the furniture, or pick up obstacles.

C by GE switch- how to use off/on with existing non-GE smart bulbs.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 10:06 AM PST

    Hi all!

I thought I knew what I was doing, and that was clearly a lie i told myself!

I use Wyze bulbs in my home and purchased some C by GE bulbs and the light switch.

Maybe I let the fancy packaging pull one over on me- but is there any way to physically push the button off, and all the lights including the non-GE ones go off? I was told that but maybe I wasn't conveying the right want for myself. I know the C by GE app is insular, but In my head, I could create a group in alexa or something? Any advice would be great! I'm hoping i'm woefully ignorant!

Disability access + Smart Home set up - help please!

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 06:04 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm creating a disabled access room in an 'Art Hostel' for a project and I'm looking into how voice and touch can be used to control all electronic aspects of the room as well as facilitate beneficial and calming sensory experiences. Blinds, lighting, sensory devices and playing sound experiences I create etc.

I am looking into buying a Google Nest Hub Max (or a tablet) + the Google mini and perhaps the Google Nest audio but I have some questions that I can't seem to find the answers to anywhere.

If anyone could please help me that would be really appreciated - or point me to any websites or things that might help! These questions are all regarding the Google Next Hub Max. Also - if anyone recommends other smart tech instead of Google please let me know :)

    1) Can you 'pin' Youtube videos to the home page, so that people can click staight on them? 2) Is there any way you can play custom audio (I will be creating some soundscapes to help sleep etc) via Google Nest? 3) Can you customize the home screen to be very simple and have for example, a file of instructions (of how to use the room) on it that can be read or listened to? 4) Can you get Google to read out specific room instructions. For example 'To use the bathroom, you will need to blahblahblah' 5) Will it respond to anyone's voice?

I'm mostly looking to control all elements of the room via voice and touch screen, playing custom audio to linked speakers, and giving guests room and helpful instructions and information.

I hope this isn't too much - I'm a total beginner to using smart homes but realise they're incredible at giving access and I'd really like to use this. I'm really struggling at deciding whether the Nest Hub Max would be better than a tablet.

What Will Smart Homes Look Like With AI of the Future?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 08:03 AM PST

Code from Sonoff RF Bridge doesn't work quite the same as from the remote (sometimes)

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 07:09 AM PST

Linear actuator. A for forward B for back.

Press button A on the remote, or generate code A from Sonoff RF Bridge - actuator goes forward.

Press B or generate B from Sonoff RF Bridge, two things can happen:

    1) If you do it before the limit of motion is reached (while it is still moving forward, in other words): both always work to reverse the direction. So either using the remote or the Sonoff app, you can make it go back and forth to you heart's content.

    2) However, once the limit of motion has been reached (there is a built-in limit switch): Remote button B always works, but recently generating code B from the Sonoff RF Bridge only works occasionally.

Obviously I have tried relearning code B, but equally obviously it's either correct or it isn't: and if it works in situation 1) above, it should work in situation 2).

Similarly if button B on the remote works in 2) above then so should the Sonoff-generated code.

So I really am stumped here.

    Making a smartbed

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 03:31 AM PST

Hey guys. I had an idea a while ago about making my electric bed smart, so that I could use IoT to connect to the Google Assistant.

The bed-controller has four main buttons that is up(head), up(feet), down(head), and down(feet). it also has two split buttons that is split that combined the up buttons and the down button. Look at the photo for a more understandable look.

    http://imgur.com/gallery/620mcQU

So my question is, how the hell should I do this on a thight budget? Thanks:)

    Edit: Its a wired control
