Posted: 08 Nov 2020 12:48 AM PST I have an old android 7 tablet that I turned into a weather display by the entrance of my door. Out of concern for the relatively static screen, and a desire to have more "infotainment", I'd like it to cycle between different content, perhaps: Weather, news of the day (at least) Nice to have: historical fact of the day, local events I figured I can put together a webpage on local LAN and have the browser display it. Is there something that exists that does this already, either as an app or some sort of browser based solution? [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:35 PM PST I recently was gifted a nice TV after my grandfather passed away and my grandmother was downsizing but it doest have HDMI-CEC and so I cannot use my Chromecast to turn it on. I also like having the Chromecast slideshow playing all-day in the room because of the atmosphere. My goal is to have something to push the on button on the side of the TV at 7 am and again when I say "Goodnight Alexa" as well as being able to control it from either the Alexa app, another app on my phone, or a smart button. Are there any products that can make this happen? [link] [comments]
Looking for Programmable Garage Keypad w/ AirBnB Integration Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:17 PM PST Hey Reddit, I've been pouring through posts but I can't seem to find the answer to exactly what I am looking for. I am looking for a system that will integrate with AirBnB to automatically create a garage keypad code and send it to new guests. I know there's Lifemaster myQ and other "smart" garage devices but nothing seems to integrate with AirBnB (I specifically do not want to have to remember to create and send codes to every AirBnB guest). I also know there's SmartThings / Z-Wave devices but I'm still not sure how I would specifically a) automatically generate a four digit code that is only valid between check-in and check-out and automatically send to AirBnb Guest b) automatically program a physical keypad next to my garage that the guest can use to open/close the garage door. Ideally there's a system that I can use to control my old, non-smart garage door motor, like a Z-Wave controller that then connects to a physical keypad and also connects to AirBnb and auto-generates and sends codes to guests. Many people have mentioned the Linear GoControl Z-Wave controller but there's so many 1-star Amazon reviews saying it breaks within a year and there's no support. Who's successfully figured this out? Please teach me your ways! [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Nov 2020 03:26 PM PST Is it possible to have blink mini cams used for only motion (no filming) unless Alexia guard is on? I want the motion alerts and no filming while I'm home but when I leave the house I want to start filming. [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Nov 2020 02:44 PM PST Hello all: Home automation is on our hew home (to us) roadmap but will be accomplished after more pressing things are handled. However, replacing the locks is something that needs to be done sooner rather than later. I'd rather not "invest" in new standard locks for the house if I'm just going to replace them in a couple of months. Any suggestions on safe bets for keyless entry locks so I can be set for when I do decide on an automation platform? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Smart Clouds - Exploring some ideas for a project Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:43 PM PST The missus made a cloud using fairy lights (battery operated), an empty coke bottle and some teddy bear stuffing. She wants to hang them from the ceiling using command strips, and now I am tempted to grab some battery powered LED strips that receive IR and was going to either build a blaster solution using a raspberry pie and OpenHab to have assistant control over these floating clouds. I thought I would come to Reddit and the much better ideas you have? [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Nov 2020 11:42 AM PST We are allergic to our cat hair and dust. We have 60m2 floors (panels+tiles) and three small carpets. S5 Max have a "spring" near brush and turbo mode so he presses better to the ground on carpets. Viomi does Y mooping and have bigger water tank. Should we have better dust cleaning (S5 MAX) or better moping (VIOMI)? I am also looking for good and economical AIR PURIFIER. We have very bad air pollution in city, worst in EU. Does ozonation works on allergies, is this science-proved? [link] [comments]

Smart plug to automatically charge laptop? Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:13 AM PST Hi, I am looking at converting a laptop to a plex server but I don't want to have the laptop charging all the time since it can ruin the battery. Is there a smart plug I can buy or a way for the computer to talk to it so that when it gets down to like 10% charge that it will tell the smart plug to turn on? Thanks I'm advance. Needing a 'stove is on' management device. Posted: 07 Nov 2020 07:44 AM PST I need something that can interface with (alexa) and alert me if the stove is on and/or not being used. I don't want to have too much logic right now, but after getting burned and finding the burners on again and again... I need another solution. Yelling at the spouse isn't functional. I was thinking this: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3538 which can be interfaced to an esp chip, and then to alexa. I could also put a PIR or thermocouple inside of the stove (and run it up to the burners) to check the temp. I could also put something on the knobs. It's just become a bit of a problem and it's only getting worse as we get stressed out more (and she gets more forgetful). If you've conquered it or figured out a way, or seen a product, please... pass it along. -and statements of 'try harder' are not welcome. We've been trying harder for 3 months. Edit: It's a gas range. So ideally we'd be looking at temperature, but as was pointed out if it's not lit, it's leaking gas. At least we can smell that :) [link] [comments]

UK - Stairs lighting (what we call 2 way but is apparently 3 way in the US) Posted: 07 Nov 2020 09:00 AM PST Hi Guys, I've just finished completely gutting my new home and I'm redoing everything in it from scratch (ethernet everywhere, ensuring all the lighting has a neutral, smart switches on all the walls, air source heating, already replaced 3 lintels and 2 sets of joist, etc). One thing I'm unsure of is how to replicate stairway light switching. The lighting cable I finally stripped out today was setup as the Youtube video below. Classic 2/3 way switching with the second switch wired into the one that actually connects to the lighting. This enables you to turn the light on at the bottom of the stairs and then turn it off at the top with the classic XOR style switching. I'm wondering what the obvious alternative is for smart homes? I've got one of the switches on the Amazon link at the bottom, this doesn't have an L2 connection so is basically a classic 1 way switch with an additional neutral to power the smart switch (I'm not attached to this switch in any way, I bought it just to get an idea of how much extra wall space this will take up). It strikes me that smart switches should probably work via some kind of master/slave system where the first switch is a real switch using neutral/live/switched cables and the second switch just has neutral/live and connects to the first switch via wifi. Does something like this exist or is this commonly done a different way? I'm not overly set on following any particular solution at this point, I was concerned at how the smart switching would work with a classic XOR setup though (i.e. does it understand that the old style switch being on means that the bottom switch now has an effective flipped meaning where on is off and off is on?). Thanks in advance, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efIwh5sMCcw https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07T6TS4Z1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 [link] [comments]
Is there a solution yet for these issues Posted: 07 Nov 2020 08:24 AM PST I don't keep up on new products but it's Christmas time and I need to add some affordable items to my list. I have two issues that I am wondering if technology has caught up yet. 1) https://imgur.com/sOqOVd4 is there any solution for three switches with only a single gang of space? Based on studs, doorframes, etc I cannot make this a 4 gang box. I've seen a solution for two but not sure about three yet. 2) are there any hardwired outlets (not plugs) that both the top and bottom outlet can be controlled yet? Said solutions should be smartthings and google home compatible. I'm ok if it isn't natively compatible with ST as long as there is a device handler already available. [link] [comments] |
