Does anyone actually make smart "blinds" not shades? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 06:53 PM PST Every time there's a noise outside my ground floor NYC apartment I just "need" to check on my motorcycle or RV. With blinds I can just lift a slat or vein and check. With shades I can't. Help me be that weird old person in the neighborhood. Or maybe I should just put a cheap camera in front of the window.... What is your favorite smart thermostat with most user friendly app? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 05:01 PM PST I have an older home that I'm looking to replace my digital thermostat with a smart thermostat. I'm trying to be able to monitor my home temps while I'm away. Having it "learn" my behavior isn't as important as I just want it to have a user friendly app so that I can manipulate the schedule to work as efficiently as possible for my household. What has worked best for you? Why do you like it? Any that were a total bust? [link] [comments]

What is your go to dirt cheap thermostat for google home Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:53 PM PST I need remote control more than anything else because the house is so variable from section to section. The place is a rental and the ecobee that's here is going away. [link] [comments]

Light bulbs that turn off automatically after a period of time? Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:24 AM PST To save on electricity, I would like to have light bulbs around my house that would turn off on their own after a period of time, like 30 minutes, and would require us to turn it back on to continue to use it. Does such a thing exist and feasible to install without much fuss? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Nov 2020 04:11 PM PST I bought some innoveli z wave bulbs for my house without knowing that they were meant to be used with a home automation hub. I am trying to figure out the cheapest and easiest way I can control these bulbs. I'm currently looking at the smarthings hub which is $70 but I was wondering if there was anything cheaper? EDIT: Also will the Sengled Smart Hub work for Z wave? [link] [comments]
Wireless switches/buttons that are so lightweight that... Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:42 PM PST Hi. Continuing with my learning, I need devices to test/play with: I'd like a device that's like a button or a switch, totally wireless, that I can assign an action to on Home Assistant. I think I read that Zigbee and Z-Wave devices have batteries that last longer than Wi-Fi devices, right? I don't have any Zigbee or Z-Wave devices (yet). Anyway, are there any of these battery-powered wireless switches/buttons that are so lightweight that you can actually stick them to the wall with a sticky tape instead of having to drill holes? Any recommendations? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:32 PM PST Hey guys, We recently moved into a 2800 sq ft home and are having some trouble with wifi coverage. Our current router+modem box is in the first-floor office, and wifi is very slow in our second-floor office. Having better wifi on the second-floor office is more important that the first-floor office, and I've been doing some research and it boils down to these four options:
Since I really only want to increase speed on the second floor, I'm assuming a 2-pack mesh wifi would be sufficient over a 3-pack? Also I only have a coax plug and no ethernet plug in my office (I do have an ethernet plug in my bedroom however), would that be an issue? Thanks for all the help! [link] [comments]
Looking for an indoor door sensor that sends a chime/alert directly to my computer when activated Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:23 PM PST I'm not sure if this exists, but I wanted to reach out and see if it was possible. I currently live in my parent's house (mostly due to corona) and have a pair of really good headphones. This means that I can't hear whenever someone opens the door to my room, which has become increasingly annoying as I'm highly prone to jumpscares. As a result, I get jumpscared by someone entering the room pretty much every day now. My temporary solution has been to keep one ear out of the headphones up until my parents fall asleep, before immersing myself back into good sound. This, however, gets tedious, and I'd rather have a smarter solution, considering I have a bit of expendable cash right now. Ideally I'd like some sort of door sensor or motion sensor that would send a light chime to my computer just to notify me that someone is coming in if I have my headphones on. Is this possible? Thanks for the help. [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Nov 2020 09:47 AM PST Was wondering if anyone knew how long until the lights go off, I was hoping to add one to the bathroom but worry it might go out during our showers. Anyone know how these work? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Nov 2020 04:53 PM PST Anyone else having issues with actions firing based on Ring triggers? I had a few routines where a Ring motion sensor would trigger a Hue light to come on. None of those are working at the moment even after rebuilding the routine. [link] [comments]
Setting timer for Kasa Smart Switch Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:52 AM PST I'm trying to figure out how to set a time for my lamp that is connected to a Kasa Smart Switch. I'd like to be able to say "ok google- turn on the lamp/switch at 9 am tomorrow morning" Is this possible ? [link] [comments]
What receivers/antennas would you attach to an tower antenna for a rural house? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:14 AM PST While note exactly Home Automation, I suspect the Venn diagram would overlap pretty significantly. My plan is to get some land "somewhere" and it'll probably be heavily wooded. That means that anything requiring/benefiting from "Line of Sight" is going to have to go vertical... very vertical. I've been passively mulling over for a while now and figured I'd toss it to the community and be embarrassed by all the things I've forgotten. Now, a lot of these are going to be situational of course...
I figure that a massive bulk of the cost will be simply getting the equipment mounted onto the antenna and the cabling run, even if I don't use it right away (Lookin' at you, Dish Network!) [link] [comments]
HomeKit remote relay for garage door? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:27 PM PST I'd like to get my garage door to open. I can either do - get the kit for the garage door, plus a bridge to HomeKit. or I was thinking "hey I can do a momentary contact relay to open my door". Does that makes sense? is there such a thing? Weatherflow and Hubitat Dashboards? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 06:25 AM PST Hey there everyone! We currently have one of those [dumb] Thermpro outdoor sensors with a small LCD screen in our utility room. I am thinking about getting one of those Weatherflow Tempest units for more accurate weather info, as well as a Lux sensor to help with controlling exterior lights, etc. I want to get your opinion on what the best way is to display weather stats on a screen. For ~$100, a decent looking solution is a Raspberry Pi4 with 7" screen. It seems like setting up Kiosk mode is an option. I don't want something that I have to mess with constantly, but just want a screen to show weather stats and whatever other Hubitat dashboard items that will fit on the screen. Anybody care to give any tips on what would be the best (easiest) for this? [link] [comments]
Recommendations for UK Smart Blind (with a rechargeable battery) Posted: 06 Nov 2020 06:21 AM PST The obvious answer is Ikea Tradfri, however their widest blind is 140 cm and I need 165 cm. There are various companies selling larger "electric blinds", some of which are smart, but are generally advertised with rather vague details as to their Smart Specs - e.g. "Works with Alexa but you'll maybe need out proprietary remote control to connect it" or "Works with our own suspiciously expensive hub and we're not telling you anything else". I use Home Assistant and would prefer Zigbee. Does anyone have any recommendations for companies to look at? Alternatively, are there any retro-fitting mechanisms that you'd suggest? New LG Smart TV Connects to Someone Else's Switches? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:33 AM PST I recently purchased a brand new LG Smart TV. One of the settings allows me to connect to home automation devices. I scanned for home automation devices assuming that it would find the ones that I own. Instead it found two switches that do not belong to me. They are tp-link switches. I can turn them off and on which may be annoying one of my neighbors LOL. I've never owned tp-link switches so there are none of my network nor has there ever been. Any idea how this could happened? [link] [comments]
Need some help sifting through all these lighting options and finding what might best work for me Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:27 AM PST So I'm not sure if this is best community to post this in but I'll post anyways and if someone knows a better community let me know I'm looking for rbg lights for my room. I want them to accent the posters and pictures I have hanging on my walls but not running through the perimeter of the room. I want them to all be controlled by the same controller whether it be an alexa or a google home or even just a separate remote or app on my phone I dont really care. My main concern is the wires though I don't want to run each lighting set up for each poster down to different sockets around my room and I don't want wires running all across my room either so I'm wondering if there are any wireless battery powered led strips that I could use that would still interface with each other and not require me to have to control each poster's worth of lighting separately. My budget is fairly open. I know with led lights you often get what you pay for but I'm not looking for some crazy high quality lights, just something to add some nice lighting effects to my room. Q: Can you set temperature on Xiaomi Mi Smart Space Heater S? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:24 AM PST I bought it today, it connected flawlessly, and I can turn the heating on and off via Google Home voice commands. I even made it funnier with the routine which, after I tell google that I'm freezing, she responds: "RBMK reactor running at 50%, leaking 3.6 Roetgen per hour. Not great, not terrible." and turns on the heater. What I didn't manage to find on the internet is whether I can increase/decrease temperature with voice commands. Maybe someone who has the same heater might know? :) Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Multiple radiator valves and central boiler smart automation? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:26 AM PST I am planning on installing multiple smart radiator valves with temperature sensor and a boiler relay. I want all of this to be self hosted and not use third party services but I cannot figure out how to automate it: Do I turn off the boiler when one out of many rooms get hot enough? When all of them get hot enough? Because each valve has it's own temperature control, I do not know when to lower the valve temperature, when to turn on/off the heater? Has anyone done something similar and could advise? [link] [comments] |
