Converting a Keen smart vent to use AC power

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 01:56 PM PST

I've gotten tired of changing batteries on my Keen smart vents, so I've rigged them up to use AC power instead and I figured I'd post what I did. I've uploaded a few pictures here for reference.

I got a Lenink AA Battery Power Supply Adapter for $14 from Amazon. You'll want the 2-battery version, the Keen vent takes 4 AA batteries but the vent only actually uses 3V. This power adapter contains a battery with a wire, and a dummy battery (just a wire inside a AA shell). Pop those two in one side of the battery pack as shown in the first picture, the foam indentions should hold the batteries in place without anything in the other two slots. (If you put dummy batteries in those slots it won't work, the circuit has to be broken)

Next I went in the attic, climbed over to the vent, and poked a hole in the ceiling box to run the wire for the wall plug, as shown in the second picture. I stuck that wire into the ceiling box, plugged the wall plug into an outlet I already had in the attic (using an extension cable), and went back downstairs.

Next I removed the vent from the ceiling, popped in the battery pack with the wire sticking out toward the outside, and ran it to the side of the vent up into the ceiling box. I plugged it into the cable I poked through earlier, confirmed that the vent powered up like normal, then installed the vent back into the ceiling. You can just barely see the wire as shown in the third picture, I've circled it in yellow. If you put the vent cover on, you won't be able to see it at all.

Once that was done, I took one more trip into the attic to seal the hole in the ceiling box with aluminum tape. Next, I'm going to get supplies to modify my other four vents, then no more batteries!

Magic Home LED Controller - Non-flashable variant with different chip inside?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:21 PM PST

    Hi,

I bought the popular Magic Home LED Controller, planning to flash it with tasmota. I have done this multiple times before, without any problems. In other words: I do know the process how to flash these kind of devices. However, the ones I bought recently, - I couldn't get them to flash, no matter what I tried. After a closer look, it seems it uses a different chip. It is not an ESP-chip, but one from a different manufacturer (SuzhouSm Suzhou SmartChip Semiconductor Co., LTD) This is what it looks like: https://i.imgur.com/GaEtkcO.jpg

This explains why the esptool couldn't even establish a connection. The main differences were:

    - No labeling of the pins

    - Different chip, label is S90708 21946.

    - Different board labeling (ZJ-WFMN-E). The original one with the esp is the A variant.

From the outside the case and everything else looks exactly the same. Now, my questions are:

    1. Is there still hope I can flash tasmota / esphome on this? I doubt it, since its not an espchip, but yea. Are there any other options I have? Or are these basically junk now? (I dont want to use the magichome software that it comes with out of the box)
    2. Where can I buy one, knowing it will have the right chip inside? (I can't tell from the pictures of the sellers, since there are no visible differences). I bought some from Ali Express before and they were fine, but other users reported the same problem. Any recommendations?

Connect echo dot to passive ceiling speakers, which mini-amp?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:36 PM PST

I want to put two 8" ceiling speakers in my kitchen (stereo is enough) and use an echo device (probably a cheap echo dot) as source. Wires are not an issue, and I prefer it over BT speakers.

Since speakers are 2x50w passive I guess need a 2x50w stereo amp that can take a standard audio jack and I can put inside the ceiling.

I'm not a big audiophile nor I play music particularly loud, do you know of cheap one (alibaba) that will do the trick? Even if it's just a circuit board, I can 3d print a case for it.

I obviously don't want to turn on an off the amp, what is the idle power consumption of these class D amps?

PSA: IOS14 update turns on Private MAC Addresses by default

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 11:28 PM PST

I have a script running on my automation server which polls my Unifi Controller for the MAC of my and my wife's iPhones for presence sensing. My wife noticed things like lights changing brightness and devices not turning on as usual this evening while I was at the office.

When I checked, the server was reporting us both as away, which was odd as we were both home using our phones on wifi. Long story short, both phones had updated to IOS14 the previous night and this new feature was turned on by default which generates a random MAC causing my script to not find the devices.

After turning that off for my home network, everything returned to working properly.

TLDR: IOS14 update turned on Wifi Private MAC Addresses by default, breaking my script

To all Sonoff wizards: offering a bounty for creating a custom solution

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 07:24 PM PST

    My dear colleagues,

Computer programming with respect to home automation is a field I truly admire. I am soon moving in to a newly constructed home of which will have ~20 433MHz sensors, of the general chinese-made variety. (door/window and PIR motion)

I am offering a bounty for the delivery of a solution that includes:

    ◇ Tasmota firmware on a ESP8285 Sonoff bridge (x3)

◇ Pre-configured files and scripts to interface the sensors and bridge with Home Assistant & Innovelli Red series light switches for both light control and security

◇ with full integration of the above into a Lovelace-type UI for use on a generic android tablet.

I do have an understanding of scripting and programming, and am well-capable to dev and maintain the solution myself, however I am at the point in my life where I have less time than money, whereby I am offering this bounty.

The amount of reward will be proportional to the level of pre-configuration, integration, and overall completion of the system. This will be negotiated and and agreed to upfront. If you're in the community and want to slang me your config files for free, hell yeah!, and if you're a student or someone who I can mail one of each sensor and make the full solution for a fair wage? - dm me!

Audio baby monitor - Play audio portion of RTSP stream on Windows & Android client

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 06:34 PM PST

I have a RTSP webcam. I'd like to consume just the audio portion of that stream. Does doing so reduce bandwidth? Does the RTSP protocol allow consuming audio only part of the stream without having to download the video portion?

What clients can I use to do it? On VLC (windows), I can play the entire video+audio stream. But is there a way to grab just the audio on a windows client? Same question for Android.

    What LED Controller for ESPHome?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 03:44 PM PST

    Hey Yall,

I am looking for a WIFI LED Controller that can be managed with ESPHome.

I used to use the popular MagicHome controller, however I am not very good at soldering and fried one today. The other one I can't get to work despite me trying everything and having all cables double checked. Pretty frustrating.

So, I am looking if there are any alternatives to the Magic Home controller that are good. Any recommendations? Preferably some that can be flashed via software only and don't require soldering?

2 Gang Wiring vs 1 Gang and Aqara

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 07:01 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

Purchased my first no-neutral zigbee switch a few weeks back now and it's been working well. It's just a simple light switch, one cable comes into the box and goes back out. That's the Live wire.

Anyway, I ordered an Aqara D1 but decided to go 2 gang instead of one. My thinking being that there's lamps in the room, I can just wire it up to L and L1 and leave L2 empty. Then I can use the second switch of the Aqara to control the lamps through home assistant. So went to fuse box, turned off the lighting (double and triple checked), replaced the switch with the Aqara (L in going to L and L out going to L1) and went back to the fuse box. Flipped it on and pop!

Take the Aqara out the fitting and find this:

    https://imgur.com/a/Fd0nZJx

Any idea what's going on? I put back the other switch and everything is fine. Does L2 need to be attached to some other load? I would have thought I they're independently controlled but now I'm very confused. Any help would be much appreciated.

How to Dim Undimmable LED lights

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 07:56 PM PST

I purchased Feit 48' LED Filament String Light Set, White. Feit customer service said:

We appreciate the email inquiry. The LED string lights are non-dimmable, we do not suggest the product be used with any dimmers, timers or sensors. - Feit customer service rep

There must be a way to dim these lights using an Arduino. What would a circuit look like?

    Thinking of buying Trådfri

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 04:21 PM PST

My local IKEA has 20% on all IKEA Trådfri so I was thinking of maybe pulling the trigger. However I have some questions regarding this:

    • From the research I have performed it seems like the Philips Hue bridge and app is better than what IKEA offers, could anyone confirm this? If so should I buy TrÃ¥dfri bulbs and just connect them?
    • I was also thinking of getting home assistant (i have servers so no hosting issues) if that matters.

What I hope to achieve is:

    • Automatically turn on lights in bedroom in morning depending on calendar (If it says im working turn it on, iff not dont)

    • Automatic turn on lights outside when its dark outside following a weather website

    • Maybe some RGB lights just for fun

Schlage Z-Wave for an AirBnB lock

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 11:13 AM PST

Hey guys, I bought this Schlage Z-wave lock for my AirBnB. I need to be able to remotely add/remove codes, lock and unlock the door remotely, and issue temporary codes that expire after a certain amount of time. I do not plan on adding any more automated devices in the future. Is there an affordable Z-Wave controller that will allow me to accomplish these things or should I buy something else? Thanks!

New home, new home automation questions

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 10:53 AM PST

I'm buying my first home soon and wanted to get into the realm of home automation. I'd like to use Google Assistant to control everything. I thought here would be a good place to ask for some advice.

As mentioned earlier, Google will be prevalent throughout the house. I have a Nest thermostat and will be grabbing the Nest X Yale door lock. I'll be using a Google WiFi mesh for connectivity, though a lot of my research seems to show I'll need to get some Z-wave or Zigbee devices. I've found some speakers I can place throughout the house that will work for multi-room listening as well has playing a single source throughout all speakers.

Where I'm struggling with figuring out what will work best is lighting. I'd much prefer to go with smart switches and dumb bulbs I'm having trouble finding RGBW dumb bulbs. I'd like to use google to change lighting color and set various scenes. For the time being I've landed on Phillips Hue lighting but AFAIK they're smart bulbs that can cause headaches that could be avoided by using smart switches instead.

Garage door opener is another. Are there any options for automatic garage doors that pair well with Google Assistant? I looked into MyQ briefly but I think it had a monthly subscription or something? I'm not sure if that's correct but there was something about it that turned me off of using that particular one.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Edit: Why? Why would you downvote this...

DIY Smart Thermostat for Ceiling/Floor Heating question

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 09:00 AM PST

I purchased a house that has Central air but the heating is all in-ceiling units with a few rooms opting for baseboard heat with per room controls (8 separate controls).

I have an ecobee with room sensors for the ac controls

I looked up premade units for the heat (Mysa) but they are $100+ each.

I'm currently making a garage door opener with a sonoff sv and was wondering if it would be possible (and safe) to make my own replacement smart thermostat with a sonoff or shelly (or something along those lines) based thermostat since it uses line voltage. I would be fine either replacing the existing thermostat controls completely or I think someone mentioned hooking something up to the existing thermostat so it could still be controlled manually.

I do have home assistant installed on my unraid server but I'm still getting it setup.

Automate download of IP Cam SDCard videos

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 04:54 AM PST

    Hello!

Sorry if this is not the right place to post!

I have a couple of Samsung SNH-P6410 Ip Cameras and so far they work great, the only thing is that I would like to automate the process of downloading the videos from the SD Cards... extracting the SD Cards and copying the videos manually feels like something I won't be doing.

Is it possible to access these cameras remotely via script/linux/whatever?

    Kind regards!

Please help! DEEBOT OZMO T8+ does not detect (dry) cat poop!

I just got mine today because of the pet poop detection feature. But when I ran a test run it didn't avoid the poop at all (some obstacles were placed around the cat poop and it went straight into the poop). Fortunately the poop was dry! Am I doing something wrong?

Firmware 1.6.2. TrueDetect 3D Obstacle Avoidance is on.
