    Another Best Smart Bulb Question

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:53 PM PST

Looking for recommendations on smart bulbs. Last year I bought a few of the Feit Color Changing Smart Bulbs from Costco, for the kids' bedrooms. They work fine enough and I don't have any issues with leaving the switch in the "ON" position, but where I draw the line is that if you switch them "ON-OFF-ON-OFF" in rapid succession (as kids have a tendency to do - a lot) they disconnect and start flashing, letting you know that they aren't connected anymore. It's a huge hassle.

In the rest of my house I have Z-Wave dimmers, which I love, but I can't use those with color changing smart bulbs, which the kids really like.

So, what other good options are out there? Phillips Hue is an obvious choice but extremely pricey. I haven't ruled these out but at that price point, I'm inclined to install more Z-wave switches and forgo the color changing effect. Ideally, I'm looking for a bulb that works with Smartthings, but really I'm looking for something that won't reset as easily as these Feit bulbs I currently have.

    Any suggestions?

Wifi Switch that Integrates/works with Philips Wiz?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 05:19 PM PST

Just moved recently. While getting our old house ready for the market, I bought a bunch of Philips Wiz and generic Wifi switches. We wanted to be able to control the lighting remotely when the house was being shown. It worked great, but I pulled and moved the bulbs to our new house. We have 40+ BR30, 12 Downlights (need retrofitted) and 30 A19 bulbs in the house. We also have non-LED compatible Dimmers.

My question is this. Are there any wifi switches that work by controlling the light versus just cutting the power. Would love to be able to control via switch and Google Assistant. The switches I was using before would just cut power, so the bulbs would show as offline. Light based commands had weird behavior (E.g. "turn on the kitchen lights" would turn on the kitchen lights at the switch, followed by "sorry, four lights aren't available.")

I know I can accomplish this with Hue, but the $6k price tag is a tough pill to swallow. I have Nest Wifi with 6 Routers (no points) so not worried about congestion.

Is the Roborock S6 MaxV worth the premium over the standard S6?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:49 PM PST

There's currently a deal going on on Amazon for the Roborock S6 that brings it down from $650 to $420.

Roborock's current top model is the S6 MaxV which costs $750.

The differences between the two models according to Roborock are:

    • The MaxV has "Top-Up Charging" which is described as "When cleaning larger areas, the robot can stop when its battery runs low, recharge to 80%, and then continue cleaning from where it stopped."

    • The MaxV has a 66W motor vs the standard S6's 58W motor.

    • The MaxV has a dustbin volume of 460ml vs the standard S6's 480ml.

    • The MaxV has a water tank capacity of 297ml vs the standard S6's 140ml.

    • The MaxV has a rated suction power of 2500Pa vs the standard S6's 2000Pa.

      • Roborock claims that 2000Pa is enough suction to lift a AA battery off the floor.

The intended use case is: a house with primarily hard floors consisting of ceramic tile and vinyl planks. The two carpeted rooms are in the middle between low and high pile carpet. Those rooms are also slated to have their carpet removed in the next year-ish. Area rugs will be put down in a few rooms eventually.

Suction obviously plays a big part in cleaning carpet but how relevant is the 20% increase in suction in the context of hard floors?

Further, given a square footage around 1k, do you think the stated runtime of 180 minutes (in "quiet mode") is enough for the "Top-Up Charging" feature to matter?

Looking for advice on an air quality monitor

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:42 AM PST

I've seen other posts in here before about air quality monitors so I thought I would give it a go. I have also posted in r/airquality but there's just not a lot of members/subscribers there so I thought id give this a go

Any air quality experts out there? Do I need a monitor to measure PM2.5 and PM10 to measure indoor allergens like dust, or is just PM 2.5 ok?

I have my eyes on an Awair Element , but it only measures PM 2.5.

My purpose for getting an air quality monitor: I want to check to see if there's a lot of dust in the air when I'm running my HVAC system, and if my air purifiers are picking it up or not/generally cleaning the air well.

The main issue: when my heating is running (through HVAC system) and stirs up all of the dust - I'm assuming maybe stuff from the furnace as well, as I try to Swiffer thoroughly beforehand so it's not stirring up stuff already there.

It's an old heating system and the air comes out at like a hundred miles an hour man which can't help

My question: Will PM 2.5 monitor everything I need? It seems like the best and most affordable home units out there, like awair or purpleair, only measure PM 2.5 and not PM 10 so I have to assume that this should be enough?

    Thank you so much.

My home is fine and comfortable aside from when I'm running the heating - my allergies are getting real bad when I have to.

    Pura Smart Home fragrance diffuser

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:46 AM PST

My partner recently bought this, and we haven't opened the box, yet (it's for our new home, and we haven't moved, yet), but I'm wondering if it's connectable to HomeBridge or any other smart home system. I'm guessing it may not be - there's not a lot of information on the website, but some googling suggests you have to connect directly to it via Bluetooth with an app. But I'm curious if anyone's ever used one and had home automation "fun" with it.

    Water Detecting/Temperature/Humidity

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 06:29 PM PST

What is everyone using these days for stuff like this? I have been using Wireless Tags for a while because of IFTTT integration and no need to plug the tags in.

Not totally happy with the wireless tag app and they don't always work so well so I'm looking for a change.

One good application I have with them that I'd like to be able to replicate is I use their temperature/humidity tag in my attic and when it gets to a certain temperature or humidity level it triggers a wemo switch to turn on the attic fan.

Zooz for 3 way setup - any reason to use smart switches on both?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:57 AM PST

I'm just dipping my toes in the world of smart switches. Forgive the dumb questions, I'm not even sure how to search for this question.

I installed 2 Zooz Zen21 switches yesterday, they work great.

One is a 3-way setup. Currently there's a Zooz on one switch, a regular 3-way dumb switch on the other end. I know I need to re-wire that dumb switch per the diagram to make it really work, that's my next step.

Is there any benefit (aside from cosmetics) to using a smart switch on the other end of that 3 way? Or should I just use a dumb switch? I'm replacing it regardless, the current switches are old and ugly. I could use a rocker-style dumb switch that will blend with the Zooz switches.

    Faulty Aimason Smart Plugs?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:58 AM PST

So I've just purchased two Aimason smart plugs from amazon. They both connect to Smart Life app, I can turn them on/off easily however neither plug actually works with whatever I plug into it. I've tried lights and chargers, both items "flash" (eg if it's lights the lights flash, then turn off. Phone charger charges for 1 second then stops) then immediately stop working. The smart plug will still say its on...

My question is, are these just faulty items that I need to return or am I doing something wrong??

I've had another set that I've previously had to send back as the EU recalled them for fire safety but they worked fine.

How to use google assistant to tell TP-Link Kasa smart plug to initiate a 30 minute timer?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:33 PM PST

I have tried to tell Google to set a shut off timer on the plug, but it doesn't register the command. I have to go into the Kasa app to set a time and turn on the shut off timer.

I did try to see if I can set a timer as a scene, but it isn't possible either.

Yes, I can set the plug to turn off every day at X:XX time, but I prefer to give it a timer to shut off 30 minutes from whenever I say so.

Does anyone know how to go about this?

New to Home Automation - RGBW Light Strip with Traditional Switch?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:36 PM PST

I built a home and moved in this summer, I am looking at starting to build up my smart home and purchased a Hubitat yesterday, So my thought process was to use Zigbee capable controllers for the light strips. Where things get complicated is because the builder wanted $1200 just for under cabinet lighting, I had them put outlets just above my cabinets that went back to a switch. Is there a RGBW strip that has the ability to be controlled via zigbee that will keep the last known color configuration when powered off by a switch? It seems that most of the controllers I have found do not function this way when the outlet is turned off and they lose power. I did see that the Hue lights are currently on sale at Best Buy, would that be my best shot at what I want?

Connecting multiple SQ11 or SQ series cameras together through wifi?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:31 PM PST

So as the title says i am trying to connect multiple SQ8/11 together in order to try and create a network of security cameras. I figured if i could buy multiple power supplies and SD cards. I could try and find a way to offload what memory is on the SD card on to a drive connected to my home network, periodically. Making sure the only thing i needed to worry about was replacing the power supplies when necessary. Any ideas on how to get them to communicate to a program acting as a conduit to monitor all the cameras, saves each cameras past recordings separately and allows me to have a way to pull up past recordings that have been loaded on to a central hard drive connected to my network?

Edit: Looked up that there are WiFi shields available for the arduino, or you can get one with a built in WiFi module. With these, could I just hook them to a power supply, pop in the SD card for the program and storage and thats it?

Home Assistant REST and Netio PowerDIN 4PZ

Today I will review you one very solid product with industrial quality that have LAN ethernet port / Wi-FI & NFC and can be used to control devices locally using 7 different protocols or from the cloud. The device is called PowerDIN 4PZ and it comes from a vendor called Netio located in Europe. I will show you what this device is capable of and I will integrate it with Home Assistant using REST interface.

Do you know what is Zero Current Switching or S0 pulse counting? Me neither until very recently, but now I have the Netio PowerDIN 4PZ that support these stuff and I already know about them. Don't worry I'm going to explain them to you while I'm showing you the other features of PowerDIN 4PZ and I'll demonstrate Home Assistant integration over JSON API.

    Starting Right now.

Not sure where to start or if what I want to do is possible.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:12 PM PST

I want to have a smart home, but I don't want to have the devices go through a 3rd party server (Like Nest, Alexa, HomeKit do). Now, I'm sure that exists, but I still want the ability to run my own server (don't worry, am programmer, can handle administrating my own server) so that I can access certain things from anywhere (lights, thermostat, door locks, etc.).

Does such a thing already exist? I'm okay with having to program at least a little bit.

Smart light switch recommendations for my applications

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 06:19 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if these type of posts are acceptable but I'm currently looking for smart switches since Black Friday is coming up and I want to see if there will be any deals on them. I wouldn't want to buy unnecessary switches just because I can't think of a different solution and I'm hoping that you can give me some advice as to what could be a better solution for what I want.

Currently I would like to have the following applications:

    1. 2 Single Pole switches to control living room/kitchen lights and be able to set scenes that dimm the brightness when watching a movie
    2. 2 Single Pole switches would be for scheduling the lights on the porch and backyard based on the sun setting/rising
    3. 1 would be for the garage and ideally turn on the lights based on movement
    4. 1 switch to control the ceiling lights/fan preferably turning on/off the fan based on the temperature of the room (I would have to look for a temperature sensor)
    5. 2 Three Pole switches for the entry hallway and ideally turn on automatically when motion is detected
    6. 2 Three Pole switches for the stairway lights
    7. 1 switch to automatically turn on the bathroom fan when there is a lot of humidity

There are so many different brands of switches and I'm not familiar with them. I wouldn't want to spend a lot of money on them for the company to stop supporting them in the future. At the moment I'm interested in the TP-Link switches but I've read that it's not a good idea having so many devices that are controlled through Wi-Fi.

If it helps, currently I have around 4-6 Phillips Hue lights but I don't like the warm color that they provide and buying more of them would be more expensive than buying the switches. I have a few Ring cameras, 4 smart outlet plugs, Alexa/Google Displays, I would like to buy a garage motor that has wifi capability, and some light strips that I can also add to some rooms in the future.

Do you guys have any recommendations on what switches could be useful for my applications or if there's a better way to go about achieving this?

Also, if this is not the correct sub for this type of questions, any advice on where to get some help for this?

Zigbee2mqtt router seems to listen to other device

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:08 AM PST

    Hi all,

I have an issue that I cannot wrap my head around. I have zigbee2mqtt set up with homeassistant, with, among some other devices, an Ikea symfonisk button (https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/E1744.html) and an aqara wireless relay controller (https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/LLKZMK11LM.html).

I use the button to turn on my lamp (which works fine) but it also turns on one of the channels on the relay controller. This also occurs when homeassistant is not running, so it's not a misconfigured automation.

The zigbee2mqtt logs do not show a zigbee event firing for the relay controller. I guess this means it is not caused by something external to the zigbee/zigbee2mqtt environment.

The aqara wireless controller functions as a router for the Ikea button. This is the only relation that the two devices have that might cause this behaviour but I have no clue why. Is it maybe a setting that can be set, like the 'interlock' option on the aqara relay controller?

There is no other instance of HA or another smarthome software running on the network.

Does anyone have a pointer for me to solve this mystery? The HA logs just show 'relay turned on' instead of 'relay turned on by service X' as it does when it is triggered by an automation. The zigbee2mqtt logs show nothing but the button.
