LED Light Strips ... so many to choose from, I need help

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:00 AM PST

I have a lot of HUE bulbs and stuff. And honestly, I just cannot see justifying the insanely high Phillips prices for the next stage of house lighting.

I am just looking to do things like under cabinets, some crown molding ambiance, etc.

I just don't know where to start there are so many different sets of light strips out there. And I need them for such a variety of applications (for example cabinet lights are going to need multiple shorter strips, while crown lights will take basically one gigantic strip etc.)

Everything I do is usually SmartThings, Google Home, and IFTTT. So it needs to work with that. Also needs to have full range of color and brightness.

I found a few different ones but honestly I am just lost ....

The options just go on and on. Please help!!! lol

Pet door that lets the dog through but not the cat?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:02 PM PST

I know there are RFID doors out there, but this is one wiley kitty and he's yearning for the great outdoors. I have no double that he would eventually figure out that he can get out the pet door if the dog is standing near it.

Does anybody know of a door that may work to unlock for the dog's RFID but be overwritten to lock suddenly if the cat's RFID is also near? Or any other variations have not thought of to exclude the cat?

What options are there for AC Control?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:01 PM PST

    Hey Guys and Girls!

I am after some Air Con control please that integrates with Home Assistant. I am unsure if it exists but i would love something zigbee.

At home I have 2 acs that use different remotes and at work i have 2 acs that both use the same remote if that matters, I am looking at getting a device for both.

I am assuming I will need 2 devices for home since they are not in the same room.

The only issue i see is that the remotes read data back from the AC as well and anytime you send a signal it sends all current settings to the AC. I would love to not have any issues controlling fan speed, angle, off timer, on timer and the whole lot using home assistant.

First I thought i would just use an IR sensor and a raspberry Pi but I can't seem to get very far with that. I also want something without any servers involved or access to the internet! I was looking at TADO but I believe you have to use their website?

I am in Australia If it matters. Thank you.

Could someone explain the difference between the two Wifi motorized shades options from selectblinds? (Motion App vs. Rollease Automate Pulse App?) Which do you recommend?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:37 PM PST

Looking at selectblinds, it seems they have two different wifi models. For example, from what I can tell:

What is the difference between these two systems for motorized wifi blinds? Is one recommended over the other?

    Thanks for your help. :)

    Recommended Setup

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:02 PM PST

I am new to the whole smart home arena and would like to combine the few things that I already have (Arlo cameras, Ecobee thermostat, and Rainmachine sprinkler system), as well as add the ability to control room lights and lamps. I've seen so many products like smart plugs, switches, bulbs, and hubs. It is a lot of info and would like somebody to please just tell me what is the best setup to accomplish this. Also, I have an android phone and I would probably not use a voice control. Any ideas?

NodeRed + Tasmota + MQTT - Trying to change WS8212b RGB LEDs

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:06 PM PST

I have an ESP8266/ESP-01 flashed with Tasmota and connected to a strip of WS8212b RGB and out to an MQTT server and HomeAssistant (via MQTT).

I even have a half-assed random RGB to HEX to Tasmota command topic that sets the entire string to a random color.

    Everything works perfectly.

Now I'm trying to setup NodeRed flows to control individual pixels and I'm running into some walls...

    1) There's almost no Tasmota documentation for WS212b LEDs (or elsewhere)

    Docs - Lights

WS2812 Any light using WS2811, WS2812b, WS2813 or SK6812 LEDs falls into this component. They're also commonly called Neopixel lights. Configured in Tasmota by assigning WS2812 (7)

component to its GPIO. For wiring, see instructions for LED strip or Wemos RGB shield.

    LED<x> in Commands

Led<x> #RRGGBB = set hex color value where <x> is the pixel number of the LED (applies only to addressable LEDs) That's it

Does anybody know what the Tasmota command for changing an LED is? I'm trying permutations of hex color + bulb but not able to make any changes in mqtt or in the Tasmota command window.

    2) Within NodeRed and outside of putting everything in a Javascript function, is there a way to combine and format strings?

String Add Formatting String Add Formatting
    Color Hex < Bulb >

    Minimalistic LED automation

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:38 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm looking into automating my lights with LED strips. I've read start my home automation mega thread, but the answers recommend hole systems. I would like something lightweight , ideally a small (and cheap) controller which simply exposes an API to the local network.

I would like to implement everything else by myself.

Are there any devices like that, or how lightweight can it get?

Needing help in figuring out an HDMI splitter/capture component for Hyperion.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:20 PM PST

    Hi all,

Been into the HA scene for around a year now and been able to find my way around most things by either tinkering around with settings constantly or digging into depths of reddit/HASS forums/Google. Now I'm facing a roadblock that I'm not 100% sure on how to solveThough this might just be me having blinders on and missing something obvious.

So I have an AppleTV 4K going to my Pioneer VSXLX102 receiver, which in turn has HDMI out to my Sony XBR75X800G. In the current state, I can output content in Dolby Vision to the TV from the AppleTV via my receiver.

    Enter Hyperion.

I have almost everything figured out. Looking at using WS28212B 60/m LED strip (16.4ft) for behind the TV. Power being split from a 5v20A source between that strip and RPi 3. My original plan was to put an HDMI splitter on the receiver's HDMI OUT port, with one going to TV and the other going to a capture card (HDMI --> USB).

This is where I'm not able to figure out what to do, because it looks like no matter what kind of a setup I can think of, I'm losing out on Dolby/HDR. Here are the options I have considered:

    • Use an auto-downsampling splitter which sends 4K on one HDMI out and downsamples the other output to 1080p for the capture card.

      • This gets rid of Dolby/HDR on the first output stream.
    • Get a capture card that supports a 4K input.

      • I've only been able to find ones that support 4K/30hz, which runs into the same problem then as the first one.

What would be my way forward here that doesn't involve downgrading my image output?

    Best option for offline automation?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:10 PM PST

It looks like Hubitat and Home Assistant are the two viable candidates right now for integrated home automation. I was trying out HAAS but found that the integration for smartthings was actually a webhook, which means it fails if internet goes down. This is what turned me off for IFTTT, it relies on the cloud for everything.

I also found out that the smartthings sensors are actually zigbee sensors. It turns out that my led strip lights are also zigbee

I'm left with a few options: 1. Ditch all the zigbee stuff and get a zwave usb stick with HAAS (prob not an option) 2. Ditch HAAS and go with Hubitat only 3. Get Hubitat and use as a dumb gateway for HAAS 4. Are there zigbee usb sticks that work with HAAS? 5. Go with a cloud-based approach but add cellular backup?

I'm comfortable programming. I prefer to go with the platform that has the more stable, well-supported integrations. I suppose option 3 can be robust, but I've also ready about latency issues. At the end of the day, I like tinkering, but I value stability and fault tolerance over everything. Any suggestions, or even new ideas?

Any ideas how I could go about adding my washer/dryer combo to my smart home? It has an RJ45 jack on the front, I’m wondering if I could hook it up to an ESP32 or something, but I don’t know where to start here. I have a home assistant setup and would love to add this to it

    e-control Broadlink app and cloud

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:50 AM PST

Hi, I have a smart power plug that is controlled with the e-control (broadlink) app.

I'm trying to connect to google home assistant, but for that I need an account within the app.

The thing is... the app is quite bad, the account creation doesn't seem to work. I register and I don't get any email, and I can't find any website on desktop that I can register.

anyone knows where to register/create account in broadlink?

or a stupid question... is it possible to register the device in some other app or service?

edit: I manage to find a different Broadlink app that is not e-control. Now the problem is that on the last step of the configuration I get the error message:

"The device is connected to the network, but the current account location does not match the user area supported by the device, so the device cannot be added to the account... bla bla bla

We recommend that you delete your account in your personal center and then re-register for another account. When you register, set region as the user area that the device supports..."

how can I possibly find out which area the device supports?

    Water level sensor

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:24 PM PST

Looking to rig something up to automatically water a Christmas tree that's at my cottage. Was thinking of getting a small 110v pump used in aquariums/fountains, wifi plug, with some kind of sensor in the tree stand. I have HA setup so can make an easy automation. Can't seem to find a Wi-Fi water sensor for this purpose. Suggestions?

Fine with either Zwave or wifi.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for testing/benching home automation kit safely?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:28 PM PST

I've been bitten a few times, especially with smart wall switches, dropping connections, not staying on etc.

Has anyone seen any good blogs etc for bench testing kit? I'm thinking of wiring it into a standard plug (UK so have neutral and earth in plugs) and mock up a lighting circuit for testing stuff.

    Is this a dumb idea?

Is there a way to trigger a routine/action when I or my wife receive a call on our cellphone to flash some lights or announce on smart speakers(Alexa or Google)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:21 AM PST

My wife and I have a habit of leaving our phones everywhere and we will receive calls that we don't notice for hours.

I would like to setup a notification system that is house-wide.

What would be the easiest/best way to accomplish this?

Can Samsung Connect Home work as a Wifi range extender and Smart Home hub?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:58 AM PST

I am currently using TP-Link OnHub Wifi router and am interested in adding a Wifi extender (or mesh network) and also plan on setting up a new smart home hub. Would Samsung Connect Home be able to do both or is it better to have 2 separate devices?

Also is SmartThings Hub Controller different from Samsung Connect Home?

    TIA

    Philips Hue + doorbell integration

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:20 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

So I currently have a couple Hue lights in my apartment, and I'd like to know if there is a way to make them blink/change colours whenever my doorbell rings. As most people, I'm working from home, and I usually have noise cancelling headphones on, which prevent me from hearing the doorbell ring. It's a pretty standard, "dumb" doorbell, so I was thinking perhaps along the lines of having my cellphone pick up on the sound, or maybe connecting the doorbell to some device which would then "speak" to the lights. Has anyone tried doing something similar? If yes, how?

    Thank you!

    Looking for Zigbee led strips

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:27 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm looking for zigbee led strips for the 3 following situations:

1- Not necessarily dimmable, can be cold/hot. It's to replace some lights under the over the stove cabinets in my kitchen.

2- Small strip to use in my corridor and couple to a motion detector for night movement to the bathroom :)

3- Something to put behind my TV. I don't need the color sync (if I change my mind I'll go Hue), but something I can easily dim or setup a scene with it.

Any ideas or suggestions ? I see so many options on Amazon and most of them really look like cheap stuff.

    Thanks !

What RTSP camera, OSS firmware, easy to buy and update (firmware-wise)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:53 PM PST

I've had a mix of Blink (battery powered, proprietary, no API, integration beyond Alexa & IFTT) and Wyze (USB powered, Xiaomi hardware, proprietary firmware, no API, no integration beyond Alexa & IFTT) for a few years. With the slowness of IFTT (I am a paying customer) and the lack of integration with Hubitat or node-red, I am looking at other ways.

There are commercial alternatives (Eufy, Alto & others) but it seems like it'd be trading one evil for another.

From what I gather about the Xiaomi or Yi cameras, it's possible to buy the hardware flash RTSP firmware on it. And even use things like DOODa on it (https://github.com/snowzach/doods for AI detection.

What options have you chosen and why are you happy or unhappy with it?

Control of Fans and Lights using a Hub or 5Ghz WiFi

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:53 AM PST

I just purchased a rather large property with 2 dwellings. We had WiFi issues getting everything to work on one network between the two homes. We solved that with a Netgear Orbi with WiFi 6. Have had lots of issues with being able to isolate my phone onto the 2.4Ghz network to install smart life switches and fan controls. I'm looking for another brand that will offer all in one control for Fan/Light combo and separate control as well as light switches and dimmers for the entire house. What brand (with or without Hub) would allow me to use 5Ghz WiFi or just connect to hub seamlessly?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:58 AM PST

Hi I've just bought a PS4 and am currently running it via the HDMI passthrough on my Xbox 1X as all my TV hdmi ports are in use. Can anyone recommend an hdmi splitter (at least 2 in 1 out) preferably with IR remote so I can add it to my Harmony activities? Thanks
