Why are ceiling fans stuck in the dark ages? Posted: 07 May 2021 04:32 AM PDT We just moved into a house where there were only two ceiling fans and we didn't love what they had. We had ceiling fan outlets installed in every room. This being 2021, I rather assumed ceiling fans had joined every other house device that uses electricity in integrating smart home and connectivity features. Silly me. Are there any hidden gems out there that work really well? At some point I'd like to put indoor thermostats in each room and have the ceiling fan get to work depending on the temperature. Anyone have a setup like that? [link] [comments]

I want to love Home Automation but I don't. Posted: 07 May 2021 01:49 PM PDT Eleven months ago I put a post on this subreddit asking how I could have a couple of lights turn on at dusk and turn off when everyone's gone to bed. One of the posts suggested I abandon my Google Home setup and use Home Assistant. That rabbit hole turned out to be a significant covid lockdown project. Since then I've bought and configured security systems, light bulbs, motion sensors, blinds, switches, zigbee bridges and sockets all connected to Home Assistant. I've soldered, flashed Tasmota, coded ESPHome firmware, bugfixed scripts and written linux guides. It's been equal parts fun and infuriating, like all good tech projects. A year on and I look at what I achieved and what is genuinely useful, and I'm sorry to say that there's not a lot I can point to. I have zigbee PIR sensors that turn on lights as I enter the room. They work most of the time. I have a roller blind that goes up and down at dawn and dusk. I have a dehumidifier that turns on if there's no one in the room for a while. I don't want to yuck anyone's yum. I've enjoyed learning about technology that's new to me and figuring out solutions to technical problems. Nonetheless, I'm left wondering whether if home automation is all that useful, or whether it's useful but not quite ready for mass market. If I'm honest, I think it's a bit of both: a ton of configuration and maintenance for automation that doesn't seem that useful. One of the first posts I saw on this subreddit was along the lines of "Why spend six minutes doing something by hand when you can spend six hours failing to automate it". That's my sentiment at this point. I'm curious to know whether people here have got to a point where they have useful home automation that works reliably, or whether it's just an interesting technical folly. [link] [comments]
Led strip still on (really low light) when turn off smart plug Posted: 08 May 2021 12:27 AM PDT Hi there! So i bought a smart plug wifi, its works nice. I have connected to it a simple led stripe, no rgb, or remote controls, nothing, simple white led strip. If i turn on the smart plug, led strip turn on, ok. But when i turn off the smart plug, the led strip "turn off" too. But the led strip still reciving some really low power because it still emitting light but really really low. The tuya app says there is no consumption on smart plug. Is that normal? [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 May 2021 09:46 PM PDT Someone posted a similar question using this dehumidifier with an Ecobee. I currently am using HomeAssistant with a WiFi plug to power the unit on and off, but the dehu won't turn on the compressor if the actual humidity is below the setting on the humidistat. I want the compressor to run regardless of what the sensor on the unit reads, and I will monitor the humidity with my own sensors. Is there some way to wire this so that it always runs when powered on? Or can I use an aduino with a low voltage relay to tell it to start the compressor? Does this wiring guide give you any hints? I'm wondering if the NO/NC dipswitch has anything to do with operation. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 May 2021 05:08 PM PDT Hi guys, quick question. If I am breaking all my walls down, what's the best system I can use to automate/ make my lights smart? I have heard of control4, rako, ra2 select and homeworks. My electrician kept trying to push homeworks on me but it's too expensive. He advises strongly against ra2 select because its "not wired". What would you guys suggest? And what additional information do I need to give you to help answer? It is a 5 bedroom house and top spec. I am not looking to spend much on lighting. I just want a good reliable system. Thanks for taking the time guys. [link] [comments]

Ikea Tradfri gu10 bulbs are garbage after a year Posted: 07 May 2021 05:03 AM PDT After about a year of using 6 ikea gu10 bulbs (led1650r5) 3 of them have died with exactly the same fault. One of the LED's inside the light dies and the rest of the LED's start flashing. Conversely I've got 12 innr bulbs I bought 3 years ago that are all fine (aside from a buzzing noise at low brightness). Basically, don't risk it with the ikea bulbs. I wanted to report this to IKEA but trying to navigate the rabbits warren of a support site was too annoying. I don't have a receipt, because who has a receipt from 18 months ago for a £10 bulb? I'm just kind of annoyed as I purchased LED's to help reduce my landfill footprint and these pieces of crap haven't helped! End of rant/PSA. [link] [comments]
Yale Assure SL Deadbolt with August Connect - Automations are useless, or am I missing something? Posted: 07 May 2021 07:48 PM PDT As far as I can tell, you cannot create any conditionals with August automations (i.e. IFTTT, Philips Hue, etc). I want to be able to specify a condition such as time of day or HOW the door was locked or unlocked. Examples. 1) TURN ON LIGHTS WHEN DOOR IS UNLOCKED - I can set up my Hue lights to turn on everytime the door is unlocked but that is completely useless because I don't want them to turn on during the day. I also don't want them to turn on when I unlock the door from the inside (manually), because it doesn't make sense to turn on my damn lights if I'm unlocking the door to leave the house. I should be able to specify to turn on the lights only if it's after XPM and only turn on the lights if the door is unlocked from the OUTSIDE (via code/keypad or app). 2) TURN OFF LIGHTS WHEN DOOR IS LOCKED - Again, completely useless without being able to set a time of day or HOW the door was locked. If I'm home, and it's night time, and I lock the door manually, from the inside, it's going to turn off all my lights? WTF? Again, I should be able to set something up that allows me to have the lights turn off when the door is locked via one touch lock only. If door is locked manually, then - DUH, THAT MEANS IT'S LOCKED FROM THE INSIDE AND I'M STILL HOME. DON'T TURN OFF MY DAMN LIGHTS! The August app can distinguish between a one-touch lock or keypad unlock versus a manual lock/unlock, so why can't this conditional be setup for automation? Am I missing something? HELP! VPN docker container for your server? Posted: 07 May 2021 07:41 PM PDT Not strictly home automation, but I figure a lot of you run the same kind of stack as what I am. Basically, I wanted to have a bunch of containers for media, but also want one container for VPN. I've been struggling with finding a good tutorial on how to setup a docker compose for OpenVPN client and have some containers go through it and others not go through it. I've been running into issues. Wondering if you could share any tutorials you found useful. Mine looks something like this. But when I put ports for the service web UI in the ports section, I get port conflicts. Not including the ports in there makes the service web UI unavailable. Someone suggested just putting the VPN on the host rather than as a container, but it seems like that would make it harder to control which containers use VPN and which don't, as well as preventing inadvertent access if VPN is down. Posted: 07 May 2021 06:42 PM PDT I've just purchased another hub to add energy monitoring to my automation (The EAGLE-200) and it requires it be connected to my network. That's not really a problem, except the tiny plastic stackable shelf I've got the other hubs on is basically full. So it's sitting on top of them now. I have the ability to mount them or something holding them to the wall, along with an 8-port network switch to feed them internet, but I have zero idea what I'm looking for. Do I just grab a big sheet of wood, some zip ties and some mounting screws? Is there a more professional solution to mounting the mess of hubs? What do you have set up? Can I see it? For reference, I've now got to find room for my modem (SB6190), a SmartThings v3, a Mac Mini, a Raspberry Pi, the aforementioned network switch, a Chamberlain MyQ hub and now the Eagle-200. Posted: 07 May 2021 05:44 PM PDT Hello! I just replaced a couple blinds in my house and go to thinking about setting up some smart blinds to just tilt them open or closed. When I got to looking, it looks like unless I buy a new set with the functionality built in, I'm stuck with Tilt(my smart blinds) which are $150 each plus $90 for the hub. Which for my five important windows comes out to $840. Is there any cheaper way? I'm okay with a little hackie, as long as I can still make it look nice. I currently have a smartthings hub if there is something zigbee or zwave compatible, but ultimately not opposed to using WiFi. Edit: also needs to be able to be battery or solar powered. Three of these windows are nowhere near an oulet. [link] [comments]
How to automate Plantation shutters with hidden tilt bar Posted: 07 May 2021 04:22 PM PDT I'm really surprised there is no good off the shelf kit to automate plantation shutters. My shutters have a hidden tilt bar at the back that just control 5 blades, so opening and closing then would require very little power. It seems like it should be simple enough to have a motor that pulls the bar up or down. So, I'd like to try making my own solution. Could someone point me in the right direction to what motors I would need? Here's an example of the the tilt bar https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRW-HRXp4CqMDaFecHTy8sL3EhnnEEu0DSqEA&usqp=CAU [link] [comments]
Screen saver for HA tablet dashboard Posted: 07 May 2021 02:09 AM PDT Hi all I'm currently doing some tests with an old DELL 5290 Wndows 10 tablet. I've got a nice dashboard on it for my Home Assistant. I would like to do 2 things: have a screen saver run on it by default and use the front camera to detect when someone is close and then open up to the dashboard (then go back to screen saving) Is that second part possible to do ? Do I really need a hub? (Setup suggestion) Posted: 07 May 2021 12:49 PM PDT I'm doing a renovation with new electric wiring and would like to ask you guys for suggestions for the setup. I'm planning on having the following functions: Lighting: 2 ceiling lights in the living room, two in the kitchen, 3 in the corridor, light strip in the bathroom and 2 lights on the terrace. I'm planning to have lights which can function as a warm and a cold light (during the night/day). I want to be able to control the lights per voice command (I currently have an echo/Alexa, but I'm planning to get Google home devices for several rooms), including on/off but also light intensity and warm/cold settings. I'm thinking I need smart switches to avoid manually turning of the lights and not being able to turn them on again with voice command. I heard somewhere that Google Home would identify which room you're in so the simple voice command "turn lights on" would only work in the same room. The lights should automatically turn on with the "warm" setting at night (when using the wall switch). I also want a routine which can turn off all lights at night (which I figure is easy to do with Alexa/Google). Blinds: I'm installing electric (outside) blinds in the bedroom (overall: 3 motors and 3 separate up/down switches), which I plan on controlling using a Shelly-like device behind the wall switch and voice command with Google Home/Alexa. Heating: I want to install the tado system (or a similar EU heating control system) for my gas heating, so that I could have temperature control in the living room and two bedrooms). Audio: Audio setup in the living room with multiple speakers, but also two speaker cables going to the terrasse. Is there a way to have music played only using the terrasse speakers and not the ones inside using voice command? Also, does Google Home also support the "party" feature where you could have the same music playing on all (echo) devices throughout the house? I'm hoping to plan this right, so I'd take any advice you can give for the right setup. I'm not really thinking of adding way more complicated features in the future - but I guess the functions I'm planning are "enough" ;) Thank you :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 May 2021 12:00 PM PDT I bought a no-name cloud-connected garage door opened from Amazon that I'm pretty happy with, except for one small piece that is proving to be hard to find. The vendor is "Zegoal" and they seem to use Amazon for all their sales. Essentially a relay with a wi-fi connection, the device connects to a garage door opener and closes the contacts to open/close the door. Actually it is a bit smarter than that, because it also comes with a sensor on a long cable that detects if the door is closed. This means it will respond to the correct command based on the state of the door, rather than just briefly closing the contact. They use SmartLife for the app, which seems to have native understanding of a garage door, providing a graphic of the door open, closed or moving between one and the other. Smartlife links to Google Home which, among other things, allows voice control of the door. One can even query the state of the door from Google Assistant: "Is the door closed" will get you an accurate response. What has happened a few too many times recently is that the door has been left open all night. I looked in the app to see if the Smartlife automation tasks could help, but they only allow me to trigger a 'switch' on the device, rather than an Open or Close. It is impossible to use the state of the door as a condition in Smartlife. I wrote to their support but they could not help and suggested I contact Zegoal. Given Zegoal doesn't do any software, I am not hopeful they'll be able to help, and besides they have no obvious contact details. Does anyone know how I could achieve what I want to do? It seems so close - I can query using Google Assistant if the door is closed, now I just need to automate that query every X mins and either close, or send a message or (better still) a broadcast to warn me of the situation. Having it happen between X and Y hours overnight would also help, but that's a nice-to-have. I tried IFTTT but as ever, it does a lot of crap I don't need and nothing that I do. Any ideas appreciated! [link] [comments]

New to automation and smart home help Posted: 07 May 2021 01:18 AM PDT I am moving into my first place in a few months and am interested in getting into home automation. After reading some articles and different hubs and different products and product integration/compatibility, it seems like I'm left with more questions and the answers. My goal is to automate my bedroom so I can control a couple smart light bulbs and my window shades or blinds. What are good light and shade products that are hub comparable that won't break the bank? What hub would be the best for these products? I want one where I can ideally control my window shade and lights with my phone. Is there a way I can create IFTTT statements so that as the sun rises, my blinds open or when I need to be up, my lights turn on in certain increments to gradually get brighter and help me wake up? Thank you for any help I can get. I apologize if this is a large ask. Tldr: What hub would best help me control a window shade and lights? Which light and shade brand should I go with? I built a Solar-powered IoT sensor, it runs forever on sunshine! Posted: 07 May 2021 06:40 AM PDT Hey automation friends, happy Friday! I made a tutorial for building a solar-powered IoT sensor, based on ESP32/ESP8266. In this one I go through how to build & compile your initial ESPHome firmware, get it flashed onto the microcontroller the first time over USB on macOS using esptool, and from there all your updates are over-the-air inside of Home Assistant! I also go through a few tricks with mDNS, works great most of the time, unless your IoT devices are on different network segments or vLANs. I personally like to keep them isolated that way. Let me know what you think, I hope you find it helpful! [link] [comments]
Help: Motion Sensor to Automate Light Shut Off Posted: 07 May 2021 09:53 AM PDT How can I use a smart motion sensor via Tuya App, to turn off the light in the absence of motion aka when it doesn't detect motion it will turn off the light? Is that even possible using a sensor through Tuya App? [link] [comments] |
