Nest E wiring question : Aux to W1 ok? Posted: 06 May 2021 11:24 AM PDT I bought a Nest E thermostat which looks nice and is cheap but doesn't support 2 stage heating. This was the original thermostat: https://i.imgur.com/vqlU3CX.jpg This is the installed nest thermostat: https://i.imgur.com/K1k67N2.jpg I used the "Aux" wire as the primary heat and left the black "E" wire off. Since we don't need any emergency heat (it's never below 20 here) do you guys think this setup will work? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2021 05:36 PM PDT Does anyone know of a programmable lighting solution that can dim a light down over an interval of time, stay dimmed for a set time and then gradually dimmed back up? The application is for an art installation in a gallery that plays off of light, so it needs to be fully automated after being set up, and run through its sequence continually throughout the day. Posted: 06 May 2021 12:39 PM PDT Hi! I have a Shelly dimmer 2. It works perfectly fine. Every now and then there is a firmware update (it is now running 1.10.4), but I am not able to find any release notes of the recent changes/additions to the firmware. Am I missing something, or have they just stopped sharing updates after the firmware 1.9 blog post? [link] [comments] |

Can Alexa use multiple true conditions to automate something? Posted: 06 May 2021 08:57 PM PDT This is what I'm trying to automate and I'm not sure how to go about it. I don't have a hub. All I have is an echo and Google nest. I have a door sensor that's connected to Alexa. I would like to automate this task: If I'm home, and the door opens, and it's after 7PM then turn on the downstairs lights. What's the best way to accomplish this? [link] [comments] |
Insteon vs Caseta integration with Smartthings/Echos Posted: 06 May 2021 12:12 PM PDT I have researched it a bit more since my last couple posts and have narrowed it down to Caseta and Insteon Switches. From my old house I am bringing over 10 Sylvania zigbee lights, a hanful of switches and a couple other peripheral items I had previously used my Smartthings hub with to connect to our Alexa's throughout the house for voice activation and scenes. With this new house I will need to utilize wireless switches like the Caseta Pico, or the Insteon Wireless Switch, and it looks like neither of these switches will directly integrate with my existing Smartthings Hub, right? I really do like the idea of the wireless switches working even with an internet or Smartthings outage. Anyways, back to my original quesion... It seems like Insteon has a much broader selection of devices that they offer that will help expand my home automation than Caseta, but seems to catch a lot of hate. I also see lots of posts saying they recently have gotten better. It's pretty hard to wade through what is fact/opinion/bad one off experiences for someone who has no experience in either and is about purchase 50+ switches and fan controllers. So I guess the question is, which hub would you recommend that would most painlessly tie in with an existing Smartthings/Alexas eco-system? Is it even an option, or do I have to open two different apps on my phone depending on what light I want to control when Alexa inevitibly is giving me the red ring of death? If it matters, I have an Android phone and my wife has an iPhone. Most (all) of the programming/troubleshooting etc would done be by me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2021 10:17 AM PDT Hi all, I was wondering if it is possible to use a smart switch to turn on other smart bulbs I have in that same room aside from the light it's wired to. For example, in my living room the switch is wired to my light/fan, if this switch were to be smart, could I IFTTT or SmartThings a way to control lamps across the room as well? I currently have a bunch of Philips Hue bulbs around my place and the switch I was looking at was the Kasa smart switch with dimmer. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to automate door code generation for a shared space? Posted: 06 May 2021 12:18 AM PDT I want to share a space among several people, and I would like a door code to be generated everytime this space is booked in a calendar. I've been looking at several different options for booking in a calendar such as Dubsado and Calendly, but neither have an open API to play with. I find it even more difficult to find a smart lock with an open API and I understand there could be security concerns with that. Ièm not sure where to start looking, any tips would be helpful. Posted: 06 May 2021 07:34 AM PDT I'm looking for a smart option, or at minimum, a remote controlled window shade for a fairly large arched, half-circle window. The room where the window is located is east facing and the extra sunlight heats the room fairly quickly in the summer. I'm hoping to avoid added cooling costs by being able to close the shade in the morning when the light enters. Curious to know if anyone has one or has first hand experience with any and their thoughts on them. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Can a D1 Mini be used to bridge/mimic multiple button presses? Posted: 06 May 2021 04:09 AM PDT I have a dumb device that is used to trigger roller shutters, it has an UP, STOP & DOWN button. This is just a pad that bridges a circuit. I've tested activation this action via a Tuya Relay. But I'm hoping to use a D1 Mini to perform the function of triggering those presses and embed it within the OEM controller. Will I be able to program the mini to perform this function? My goal is to have it 'smarten' my device and allow Alexa to control it or remotely. EDIT: This is the controller I'm trying to smarten up (e-port controller) an Australian based manufacturer I've proof of concept with a single relay to trigger the button event via bridging or simulating the pad press from the OEM buttons. Debating on what hub to move to Posted: 06 May 2021 10:58 AM PDT Hey All, I had used a first gen wink for a long time, then came the day where they tried to peg a $5/mo fee for use of the automation. I got to the point where I decided maybe it was time to move on. Anyway, I currently have 3 Z-WAVE yale smart locks, a Nest Camera, and a Nest thermostat, I am looking to add 1-2 Nest doorbells. My goal would be to have all on one platform, Wink used to coexist with nest (poorly) now it appears they no longer talk to eachother. Is there any hub out there that will link all this together and have everything work well? Otherwise am I able to convert my Z-wave locks to become Nest compatible? My guess is no. Rambling and thoughts/feedback highly encouraged! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2021 10:29 AM PDT I had my LG CX OLED tv connected to my phone via LG THINQ App, but it stopped working, so I reinstalled it, and now when I want to connect the tv to my phone again it just cannot complete the process. Does anyone else have the same problem? Edit: ok, i fixed it. Or rather it fixed itself. I just kept retrying to connect it and after the 10th or the 15th time it just worked haha. Keep trying guys [link] [comments] |

Lock that works with Smartphone WITH Key? Posted: 06 May 2021 01:08 PM PDT Hey everyone. I am looking for a deadbolt lock for my door that I can unlock with my smartphone (either by going into the app OR by simply walking close) that also has a key back up in case my phone is dead AND a keypad for the same reason. I know, very specific request but any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 May 2021 10:31 AM PDT I have the nest x yale lock on homekit via the starling hub. Apple requires me to manually trigger the automation in order to open my home, is there a way to bypass this? I am not so concerned about the security aspect due to where I live, but I would rather not have to push the automation every time and instead have my home unlock as I am pulling into my driveway/connecting to my network.. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
