    Z-Wave light bulbs?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:27 PM PDT

Anybody using Z-Wave light bulbs out there? I've found a few (Aeotec, Enbrighten, GoControl), but all seem to be out of stock everywhere, and look suspiciously like they're being or have been end-of-lined. I'm aware of excellent Zigbee options, but the need to sprinkle Zigbee devices I don't want all over my house so the network can reach the ones I do want is a big drawback.

If somebody has a decent Z-Wave option for North American frequencies, I'd love to hear about it!

What is the best option for a music hub interface tablet for playback throughout the house?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 07:29 AM PDT

I think we have everything setup fine for voice commands but my partner and I are very visual people and need an interface to hop between our streaming options and digital music library. I saw a motion sensor you can add to tablets to wake on approach, that would work I think. And a UI like Windows tiles would be a good style dashboard - but I don't know. Thank you so much.

    My setup:

    • Alexa echo speakers (4) - Spotify sees all of these speakers fine but other apps not so much
    • Vizio soundbar (2) - we don't need to group with the smart speakers
    • Plex Media Server for local music, linked with Alexa (installed on my NAS)
    • Home Assistant installed on my NAS but am a bit intimidated by it
    • [Edit] TerraMaster NAS

    Help finding the right product?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 09:17 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm trying to find precisely the following but having trouble.

A light switch that: (A) is battery or mechanically powered, ie doesn't wire into the mains; has a receiver in a junction box somewhere (B) is a regular light switch form factor. In other words is not a key fob or something (C) can also be used with Google Home / IFTTT

I can find various combinations of A+B, B+C, etc but not all three in one. Help?!

My SMRTLITE led light strip won’t connect to my phone

    Posted: 08 May 2021 08:15 PM PDT

I have two SMRTlite led light strips that connect to an app on my phone through wifi, but recently they stopped working and won't connect and I can't find the device when trying to pair it with my phone. They worked for a few months before and this never happened before, and I've tried doing research and trying different things but it still doesn't work. Can anyone help me fix this issue?

Should I get rid of Alexa? & other HA questions.

    Posted: 08 May 2021 08:45 AM PDT

Hi, so I have a family vacation home that is around 3 hour round trip drive from where I currently live. I thought home automation would be the best way to go in order to minimize my trips there.

I've dabbled in home automation, and have the following systems in place:

    • Yale locks (works with Nest) (5)
    • Nest Thermostat (3)
    • Nest Protect
    • Nest Outdoor Camera (6)
    • Haiku Fans from Big Ass Fans (5) [stopped working with Nest]
    • Hue Smart Light Hub (I've reached the max allowed of bulbs, if you have any tips on multiple bridges in the same house, feel free to leave suggestions in the comments).
    • LeakSmart system for the water pump

So because Google bought Nest, the Alexa skills associated with Nest items no longer works. I was wondering if I could hold out, or if the r/homeautomation hive mind suggests giving in and switching to a Google Home assistant.

    What do you think?

Syncing lights through Alexa & Hue

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:02 AM PDT

I have an idea that I'm sure can work I'm just not exactly sure how. Can someone help?

I have a bunch of smart bulbs in my basement, most but not all connected via Philips Hue, and we use Alexa speaker to verbally turn them on and off. Problem is that some people in the house the Alexa device doesn't seem to want to listen to. One of us has to almost yell at it every few times to be understood.

I have a switch at the top of stairs to the basement that turns on the 1st bulb at the bottom. But there are 5-6 other bulbs that I wish would turn on too.

Is there a way I could set Alexa or Hue to see when one bulb is turned on (via the switch at the top of the stairs to allow power) it then turns on the others? How would I go about syncing it as such? I want an alternative to verbally turning them on and off and I don't want to buy & install a smart switch. Thoughts?

Motion- and ambient light-activated lights or switches?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 07:07 PM PDT

I have a staircase with wall sconces that I'd love to automate to turn on by motion, but to NOT turn on if the ambient light level is high. There's a skylight above it, so it's bright a lot of the day. Bonus points if I can control the light level eg. only light dim between certain hours. Sorry if this is out there but I couldn't find anything like this. I use HomeKit and Alexa already, and am comfortable with Homebridge if needed. Thanks for any clues!

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:35 PM PDT

I have a few Lutron Caseta dimmers and am interested in getting motion sensors. Do the Hue Motion Sensors work with Lutron? IE can I set up a program that if I walk downstairs between 1-7 am the lights turn on to dimmest setting?

    Home Security with Google Nest

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:03 PM PDT

    Hey Guys,

new homebuyer here and I am kinda big on making sure my family is safe. We live in an area that is pretty quiet, doesn't have alot of crime, and my neighbors are great so I'm really just wanting something to give me a little peace of mind. I currently have the google assistant in my home in the form of Google Home Minis. I plan on purchasing a Google Nest Hub and a smart thermostat (my electric company will give me a rebate for installing one so yay), so I figure I'd stick with the google theme and keep it going. I did some searching and found that Google doesn't necessarily have a home security system, so I would have to find one that would be compatible with Nest. What do you guys have?

Where to find ultrasonic flow meters for home water supply monitoring?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:27 PM PDT

Some recent posts have discussed using cheap turbine + hall effect sensor (aliexpress) flow meters to measure home water usage but they do look a bit, well, janky.

I believe that ultrasonic meters are more likely to be used for accurate commercial work but I can't find any that might be intergrated with home automation. The hero labs sonic looks like it has potential, but also to be a nasty cloud only job.

    Any thoughts? Suggestions?

    Alternative software for eWelink?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 03:20 PM PDT

Im planning to buy a Sonoff smart light switch(TX Series) but i dont want to use the recommended app called eWelink since it asks for my phone number.

i read somewhere that sonoff is based on Zigbee so is/are there another app that is compatible with sonoff?

the most important function for me is to schedule to turn on/off the switch since i will be using this for my water heater.

edit: does this switch need a bridge much like tradfri hub?

Yale keyless smart lock open out door

    Posted: 08 May 2021 05:36 AM PDT

Has anyone used the Yale keyless smart lock with an open out timber door? I've seen mention it only works with inward opening doors but looking at it it seems it would work exactly the same with a night latch designed for opening outwards…

Just entering the world of home automation. What's a noob friendly setup to turn my washer and dryer smart, to alert me when loads are finished?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I'm hoping not to spend too much, since this is my first venture into home automation, but I'm hoping to get a way to be alerted, on my phone and google home, when my loads are finished.

Any direction you guys can point me in will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Smart lock questions

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:14 AM PDT

I am totally new to home automation but was a controls engineer.

I'm planning on setting up my house with cameras, some i/o for contactors, thermostat, and a smart lock. I'm considering z-wave networking.

For the smart lock I am seeing more and more moving to Wi-Fi instead of z-wave. Not knowing how these specific devices work, will the Wi-Fi locks have the same control functions compared to the z-wave ones (remote control, alerts, remote passcode programming)?

I am also concerned of power consumption. The property may not have someone there for 2-3 months on occasion.

I'm thinking of making a large battery pack to piggyback on the installed batteries.

    Advice appreciated.

    Thanks.

Looking for Alexa-compatible wi-fi outdoor speaker (not battery powered)

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:00 AM PDT

We are adding a 3-season room and expanding our patio this summer. I'd like to put a speaker (or speakers) out on the patio that we can control via Alexa. I don't want something that's battery powered and has to be recharged. Since this will be on the patio, we need something designed for outdoor (weatherproof) use.

I've done a lot of searching, but all I can seem to find that is weatherproof also seems to be battery-powered. Any suggestions???

    Honeywell Thermostats Losing IP Address

    Posted: 08 May 2021 04:42 AM PDT

I'm running Ubiquiti UDM Pro router with current firmware and several AP.

I have 7 Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostats that randomly lose their IP address and are unable to regain them. At least that's the error the thermostat shows. I found a superuser.com user post that had the same problem and their solution was to change password to all lower case but my password is already 8 lowercase letters, no numbers and no special characters.

    Anyone else run into this?
