MiFlora sensor does not connect after v3.3.1 firmware update. Nothing can find it, not mihome app set to China or flower care app. Changed battery also didn’t help. Anyone having same issue, any tips?

    Washer / Dryer Sensing

    Posted: 09 May 2021 09:19 AM PDT

    Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening All,

I'm looking for a way to sense when my washer and dryer have finished their cycles and I'm at a loss. The only way I can think of is current sensing, but I don't like using that for large home appliances.

Has anyone come up with another way to tell when their load is complete?

Automating a heating pad for bed time

    Posted: 09 May 2021 07:20 PM PDT

I have a heating pad I use to keep my feet warm when going to bed as I have bad circulation and my feet are always freezing and I'd like to automate it but the heating pad has a manual button that needs to be pressed to turn it on (safety I guess even though they have a long spiel in the manual about how heating pads aren't fire hazards) and I'm wondering what options there might be for setting up a heating pad to turn on at a specific time so the bed is toasty when I get in.

2 Split AC units: recommended approach for AC shut down if sliding door open for more than 5 minutes

    Posted: 09 May 2021 07:17 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I have 2 "dumb" separate split AC unit, I would like to make them smart so that:
    a) I can shut them down remotely
    b) They shut down automatically if sliding door is opened for more than X minutes.

I have been reading on Sensibo but I just would like to know what experienced people would recommend me to do.

I am not using any automation platform right now so I am just looking for the easiest/most reliable route. Note: This is for an Airbnb

Idea's or Help for going down the path starting out on home automation

    Posted: 09 May 2021 07:07 PM PDT

    Hi,

I suppose this is kind of a question/discussion but this will also likely turn into a "ideas" for help. The last time I asked for feedback the amount of response and support was overwhelming, the Reddit home automation community is passionate!

I am slowly automating and learning to automate certain portions of the house but I would like to go to the next level. For myself, I am able to install such gadgets like Ecobee's thermostat, garage door openers or hooking up a Sonos and easily navigating the setup and maintaining them.

I am looking to go down a path that allows ease of use, longevity and somewhat custom tinkering. I am not sure I have the skillset for soldering or programing within Raspberry Pi, hahaha programming in Python is a struggle enough!

Current I have my Sonos, Ecobee, Ring, Wyze and Irrigation voice activated through Alexa. With the exception of schedules I have yet to setup any real activation or other types of automation ie. Motion activation for lighting when entering a room.

Examples of what I would like to achieve, no set timeline but providing context:

    • Walking in and the house lights in certain areas turn on to "x" percent.
    • Sprinklers are fully tied into a weather app and automated.
    • Installing deck lights and they turn on with sunset's or light sensitivity
    • Hot tub is Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connected and I am able to monitor water quality remotely.
    • I don't think have the blinds that can be hooked into a motor as they are pull string (Hunter Douglas).

I know that Lutron has RA and there is Home Assistant IO. Which would a person start with that is a rookie?

Again these are "ideas" but I love tinkering and playing with this type of automation. I was super excited today to see and learn about the Banggood humidity and soil monitor!!

I like forward to reading and learning from each of you.

Did you remove your old doorbell chime?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 06:44 PM PDT

I am repainting my hallway and thinking of removing the old doorbell chime since I have the Nest Hello and it dings on the Google Homes.

Any draw back of doin this? I'm thinking when the wifi goes out I may have issues but I don't know how often that would happen. I would like to get rid of the big white box for the chime and don't want to deal with relocating it at this point.

    Two way communication over Ethernet

    Posted: 09 May 2021 11:01 AM PDT

Two way communication via Ethernet in commercial setting

This is for a commercial setting but I'm hoping to use readily available home automation products for the following: Background: I have a commercial venue with two bars. The two bars are at different ends of the building with no line of sight. I'm often facing the issue that bartenders congregate at one bar and don't notice that the other bar has a long line and needs help. The bartender at the busy bar don't have time to leave there to walk all the way over to the others to have someone come back for help. Here's what I would like to do: Both bars are already connected to the same network. I would now like to use the network to set up a communication system between the two bars using flashing lights. So basically I would like for each bar to have a flashing light bulb as well as as some kind of three way switch. So the bartenders at either bar could easily signal the other bar that they need help by simply using a light switch to trigger the flashing light behind the other bar. Either bar should be able to turn off the light.

I understand this would be a fairly simple task using a regular three way light circuit but we can't have any more circuits run for various reasons. Is there any low voltage application available that could use the existing Ethernet cables and POE to archive such a setup?

I am replacing outdoor garage lights- I would like motion sensor bulbs but do they work through frosted glass?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 05:11 AM PDT

I want stylish outdoor lights and aren't a lot of options with built in motion sensors. I was going to get motion bulbs or do smart bulbs have the capability. I don't want lights on all night as I live in close proximity to others.

Is there a smart temperature sensor that works well for home automation?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 09:22 AM PDT

Is there a smart temperature sensor that works with alexa, Google, or smartthings that will allow me to turn a smart switch on / off based on temp ranges. I have a sensor Push, but it doesn't sound like it has that capability even with the gateway.

    Wireless thermostat using mains power

    Posted: 09 May 2021 12:40 PM PDT

I would appreciate help on the following as I am a bit lost.

I am about to replace both the boiler, and since I am extended periods of time away from the house, the thermostat as well.

I need something which connects to the main power as I cannot risk running out of batteries while I am away.

Doesnt have to be in the whole Alexa, Google echo system

I need to be able to control it via an app

No need for different zones or any fancy features, the thermostat will either be placed in the living room or in the corridor and wont be moved much, especially if we are all away

No need for hot water control, only heating, one zone

I will be creating a schedule while away which I might edit/amend via the app and thats it, I am not planning doing anything more complicated

I have under the radar either the Honeywell T6R or the Google Nest

Can you suggest anything else or if you have any of the above let me know of the + and -?

Anyone using YI Home Cameras and their Alexa skill?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 12:38 PM PDT

I've got a couple of Yi Home Cameras in my apartment. Recently I saw some Youtube videos of people installing a skill in their Alexa so that they can do some stuff with the cameras.

However, I can't seem to find the skill in the list of skills when I look for it. And if I look for the camera instead via "Add device", there's a section for Yi cameras, and it does seems like I can access the skill that way, but I can't get it to recognize my Yi Home credentials.

Some of the comments in the Yi skill seem to indicate this might be broken, but I was wondering if someone has experience with this. Thanks!

New house: WiFi extenders and Eufy doorbell (HomeKit)

    Posted: 09 May 2021 12:34 PM PDT

We have just bought our first home and need a wireless doorbell to go on our gate for the postman to use! We're looking at a Eufy video doorbell as it works with HomeKit and doesn't require a subscription, plus I have always had good experience with Anker products!

The only problem is the house has thick walls and the coms cabinet (previous owner installed Ethernet in every room god bless him!) is too far from the gate for WiFi to reach. We want to extend the WiFi in order to boost the signal enough to reach. Am I able to plug in a spare router and run it off a separate network? Or will it then not work with rest of HomeKit setup (hue bulbs)?

The other options are either WiFi boosters, or perhaps buying a router with more power! Any ideas welcome :)

    z-wave lock question

    Posted: 09 May 2021 08:19 AM PDT

I am using z-wave / home assistant and looking for recommendations for a z-wave lock. Most I have looked at seems to be missing functionality of being able to indicate if the door is open ( just locked or unlocked ). I just assumed all smart locks would also be able to provide open/close status. Are there locks that do, without having a separate door sensor?

Getting a gate with video intercom to phone me?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 10:47 AM PDT

Hi folks, I just bought a house which has a gate, and 2 video intercoms inside. Conveniently I have the manual, so I have this set of parts:

    • CAME ZM3E Control Board
    • CAME Frog-AE motor
    • CAME A4365 manual release mechanism
    • SY806 Video intercom

I'm often in my office with my headset on, so listening for the doorbell is a pain. I'd love for it to phone me. Ideally via SIP. Is there any way of achieving it?

    Ugh Shelly motion and alexa

    Posted: 09 May 2021 02:16 AM PDT

I really want to like these Shelly motion sensors and admittedly they are the best what's out there now (I tried 4 brands so far) but I'm getting ticked off.

The app is very iffy. The range is VERY directional. I had to really struggle getting the right angle. I don't know why they can't make the sensor PIR like my cheap alarm system that covers the entire room (and has a much bigger sensor field)

And now it stopped responding to a routine setup in alexa. It could be the alexa /amazon echo but so far I had a rough road traveled.

I don't see the point in home automation if I keep having to check if my sensors are online or fix what's going on..

Rant off :-) Just wondering if anyone else has got the same experience.

Converting 2 Dumb Garage Openers into Smart ones.

    Posted: 09 May 2021 09:22 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Moving into a new house that has two separate garage doors with two individual garage door openers. They are in the opposite sides of the garage.

I would like to convert them into a smart garage door openers to be used primarily with HomeKit (via homebridge) and google assistant.

What are good options? I was looking at myQ since I've used it before but only through their app. I've also seen Ismartgate mentioned before as well.

Question about Home Assistant and bridges

    Posted: 09 May 2021 07:42 AM PDT

I just bought a house and I'm tempted to buy a Pi for Home Assistant but when ever I look up various components like the Ring door sensors they say they require a smart bridge or some equivalent of. Does Home Assistant let you use these without them or are they still required to integrate with Home Assistant?
