LG TV smart functionality crippled by opting out of agreements. Alternative solutions?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 03:20 PM PDT

So my LG CX tv is crippled because I didn't agree to their super-invasive privacy agreements. In turn, they disabled the ability to control my TV thru a smart device like Alexa. I simply want the ability to turn on/off the tv. Does anyone know of an alternative solution? I tried using my Bond wifi device, no luck. Thanks

Is there a smart plug that can turn off when there's a trickle of power?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 08:39 AM PDT

Hello, I'm wondering if there's a smart plug that can monitor wattage and be able to turn itself off when a certain wattage level is maintained for a certain amount of time.

The use case is that I have all my home theater equipment (TV, AVR, subwoofer, and blu-ray player) all plugged into a Wemo switch which I can turn on and off with Google Assistant. I'd rather have the switch monitor for when the power draw has reached the standby level for the system for say 30-60 minutes and cut the power. Are there any plugs that can do this?

    Fan and Light Question

    Posted: 10 May 2021 10:44 PM PDT

Just replaced a single ceiling light with a fan (4 speeds) and light kit (switch controls power to both fan and lights) in four rooms. The switch only has a single load, so I'm wondering, what are my options as far as a switch or other options to be able to control both without using the pulls? Most threads on this seem to be from 2017, and I'm wondering if any new innovations may have solved this? There is an Inovelli product that is close, but not sure it does what I need to with only a single load. I do have a neutral present.

    Guest Wifi Access

    Posted: 10 May 2021 07:56 PM PDT

Looking for a solution for guests to join my guest Wi-Fi network without needing to know the login info. I have been contemplating either using NFC tags or a QR code on the fridge or in the guest bedroom. Wondering what way works well for you all?

    Alternatives to Sonos ceiling speakers

    Posted: 10 May 2021 05:32 PM PDT

Be gentle with my dumb questions here as not an audio expert.

Ok, so I am looking to put some ceiling speakers in a small living/kitchen area (2 speakers within an area of approx 40m2) and 2 on an adjoining deck outside. It would be great to have the functionality of being able to sync the two pair up so the same music is playing in both rooms. Also would be good to sync it up easily to a new TV that we will purchase for the wall (undecided on which one at this point). Looking to have them wireless and not relying on Ethernet connection. Really not wanting all the extra stuff. Just want to install the ceiling speakers and not have other stuff to have to house and adding complications. I suspect I will get some people who will criticise the use of a ceiling speaker, but thats what my wife is looking for as its clean and tidy in the room.

I love Sonos and their ease of use but wanting to learn other alternatives for the same price range. We are in Australia, but would consider ordering a product from overseas if compatible to work in Australia (ie power etc).

In your suggestions, please clarify if the speakers you recommend require other equipment like amplifiers as well. For extra points, links to your suggestions would be amazing.

Thanks for your help on this!

    POE cameras in new construction

    Posted: 10 May 2021 07:58 PM PDT

I am building a house and have an option to do the following:

prewire POE camera locations for $130/run

install for Arcdyne Bola HD+ 4MP Fixed Lens Dome Camera 2.8mm for $580/camera

How reasonable is the price? Is the camera make/model a decent one?

I am thinking of getting 2 cameras installed (front/back) and also adding 3 runs to minimize costs.

Any other suggestions/insights when it comes to home automation that could be done while the studs are bare?

    Smart Plugs Alternatives?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 07:10 PM PDT

I was looking at the Lowes Smart Plugs. Unfortunately they are not making them anymore.

The main reason being that they have both a zigbee and a zwave repeater in them.

Are there any alternatives, that have both inside of them?

If I set up my lights with my old router, and then set up my new router to have the same SSID and password, will they work without a problem?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 02:53 AM PDT

I have a couple of Philips Wiz and Realme WiFi lights that work without a bridge.

If I set them up on my ISP provided router using a particular SSID and password, will they continue to work seamlessly if I set up my new router to have the same SSID and password when it shows up?

Recommendation for momentary Decora style switch for Shelly

    Posted: 10 May 2021 11:19 AM PDT

I am looking at spec'ing a new build with all Shelly's and momentary switches. Ideally keeping it a simple as possible. So far I've tried Eaton switches, but they just don't have a nice response. Looked at Adorne switches, pretty but they don't seem to have any momentary models (e.g. to still have dimming capability on the wall).

Zigbee versus Z-Wave in an apartment environment

    Posted: 10 May 2021 06:11 PM PDT

I am a new convert to home automation. I started with an Echo Dot and now, well, I'm here and teaching myself YAML so as to make better use of Home Assistant.

Right now, I'm stuck on the sensors and other future investments (like smart light switches). I own an Echo Dot, so I am currently operating in a 2.4 GHz WiFi environment. That's fine, but would prefer my new system not be reliant on WiFi. Alexa handles voice activation, but ideally the rest runs without exposure to the Internet.

The problem is I live in a small apartment. I understand Zigbee operates at the same wavelength as 2.4 GHz WiFi and that it can cause disruptions. My desktop is hardwired, and I can switch my Amazon products over to 5 GHz, but I have no control over what my neighbors do.

Is it better to go with Z-Wave in a situation like mine, or can Zigbee work reliably even with WiFi elsewhere in the building?

Just installed mini-splits in my house. Any suggestions on how to control them?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 11:57 AM PDT

Hi all. I just installed some Mitsubishi mini-splits in all of the rooms in my house and the remotes look like they are made to control my great grandmothers 1980's television. Obviously, I'd prefer not to mount these to the wall.

Does anyone have any suggestions on alternative ways to control these without involving this remote? My preference would be something that is smart compatible.

For reference, I currently have a Nest Thermostat to control the radiant heat floors along with SmartThings, Amazon Alexas, and Lutron Caseta.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have.

    Home Automation for Garage Laser

    Posted: 10 May 2021 05:18 PM PDT

Ive purchased a laser (see below) that will assist my wife with parking in our garage. I want the laser to on ONLY while the garage door is open. I was thinking about a horizontal garage sensor that could send an IFTTT message to a plug. When the garage door closes, the laser will turn off (because it will no longer be powered). Is there a garage door sensor (hopefully wired so I dont have to worry about batteries) that you can recommend? Or is there a different approach altogether that youd recommend?

Motion sensors and Echo fourth gen

    Posted: 10 May 2021 04:16 PM PDT

So I've set up four Eaton Wifi switches and voice controlled via Alexa and the family really likes them, I also have read a post by another user lamenting not enjoying the experience anymore. A lot of the responses amounted to variations of "you shouldn't have to do anything for a smart house to work right" That got me thinking about the next step I want to take, and I think that is motion detecting if I walk into a room that has a smart switch.

In your experience, what is the most cost effective, yet reliable option for this?

Will using smart plug with a computer monitor cause any damage?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 04:02 PM PDT

Using a wifi smart plug on a pc monitor, i was wondering if this will damage the monitor at all since turning it off is basically like unplugging the monitor while it's still turned on , it can damage the display electronics?

Cover/case for Sonoff DC 2-channel smart WIFI switch

    Posted: 10 May 2021 11:56 AM PDT

    Hi!

I need to pack Sonoff DC 2-channel smart WIFI switch (https://img.joomcdn.net/4ce461f270e18526f2f29c7ff9f44a9d1c45d61b_original.jpeg) in to cover/case, waterproof preferably with access to 5V microUSB power input on one end and two separate wire outputs (one per relay) on the other end.

Is something that will meet my requirements available on market?

Or maybe there is similar device already on the market I can use to my project (5V microUSB as input and two relays, managed via WIFI)?

    Thanks!

    Schlage Encode Notifications

    Posted: 10 May 2021 12:56 PM PDT

Hi All. I've exhausted all ideas and need assistance. I have a client that is looking to redirect Schlage WiFi lock push notifications to email. The Encode lock sacrifices email notifications for the sake of WiFi. Basically, I need an app that will intercept push notifications from the Schlage Home app and send them to an email address. Does anyone know of a service to do this?

Thank you in advanced for the support.

New Build - How did you wire your door & window sensors?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 08:09 AM PDT

I'm trying to think through the details of how and where you wire your sensor leads to and connect them to the final home run wiring.

Do you have any photos of your wiring before drywall was put on?

Are there any kind of access panels in case something doesn't work?

Wiring a Shelly 2.5 with only one switch

    Posted: 10 May 2021 09:55 AM PDT

I have some extra Shelly 2.5 relays, and a number of single-switch boxes in my house. I was wondering if the Shelly 2.5 can be wired up just to control a single switch, with the S2/O2 wires disconnected - and if so, what the wiring should look like.

I've modified the Shelly 2.5 wiring diagram - added red crosses on the wires I assume I would just not connect anything to: https://i.ibb.co/xj8Z5W7/Untitled.jpg.

Can anyone confirm whether this is possible, and if so, whether my diagram is correct? I wasn't totally sure why the Shelly 2.5 has two live inputs on it.
