    Wired home automation in '21

    Posted: 11 May 2021 07:26 PM PDT

Hi, I've read this thread which was useful but is outdated.

I'm looking to add HA as one of the services on our property, but I want it all hardwired. I have a separate physical LAN for security( that's Gigabit POE+), which I can add all the HA stuff too.

I'm wondering about PLC - powerline communication protocols, and what's "up to date" in security. Also wondering about modern 802.x protocols that are out or are coming out, that don't use 2.4GHz.

I'd like to use existing powerline&ethernet wiring whilst omitting wireless as much as possible, we get thieves in the area that use RF blocking hardware quite frequently including a neighbour.

some Z-Wave inside the house could be okay.

Keep in mind this is on a large property where buildings are 20-100m apart from each other. Every building has ethernet running to it. something like wired ethernet than Z-Wave to devices in each building could be okay but for the external security stuff I Want it hardwired.

This is partly as I want to make our security system smart, so I can do things like add sensors(Laser, PIR, Radar) spotlights, relays, etc.

I don't want to use MQTT as it's not reliable and it's slow, I have a couple of mqtt lights and I dislike how slow they are, I want to press a switch and it's instant.

I'd prefer an open standard if possible to not get locked into a manufacturer, in case z-wave goes out of business, or their protocol gets hacked. If it's quite secure and that's unlikely, then I don't mind using Z-Wave or similar.

since all the buildings are hardwired with together with ethernet, I'd like to perhaps do something like a smart hub in each building that connects to the main hub / HA install(in case that building loses network access), hopefully with powerline communication between lights and switches and sensors.

Ezlo has new support guarantee (was vera)

    Posted: 11 May 2021 05:10 PM PDT

An announcement at ezlo.com says promise to provide have any commercially available z-wave or zigbee device supported within 90 days.

As Ezlo is built on the ashes of Vera, which had been something of a smoldering dumpster fire for a couple years, I am skeptical. They have done a bang up job at driving off their 3rd party developers and many power users. They have separate code bases (one a real-time os for the atom and plughubs and then a Linux-based system for their full sized controllers) so they are not well positioned for success, imo.

Does this make their hardware more appealing to anyone?

HELP: Sonoff for recirculation pump on tankless water heater

    Posted: 11 May 2021 10:36 PM PDT

I'm looking to get some help.

    Spec:
Power supply comes from wall socket to power Sonoff
App sends signal to server, server sets int flag to int(300) and begins countdown. . constraints: 0<=n<=300
Server sends sequence to Sonoff to power device ON.
When countdown is zero on server, server sends sequence to Sonoff to power device OFF.
When switch (120V Load) is ON, power device regardless of server state
When switch is OFF, grab flag from server

Basically, app to recirc for 5 minutes. When water demand is requested, ensure recirc is ON.

    What I need help with:
Wifi/wireless method of turning on switch with 5 minute timer
Timer may be activated multiple times, even while on, which would reset timer to 300 seconds
    Switch overrides timer
When switch is turned off, retrieve time remaining and run if necessary (or maybe app has internal countdown)

    Ideas:
Create a small web server that will start pump and serve it an integer or web server will also have to turn Sonoff off
Pump turns on for n seconds
When switch from hot water heater is ON (120V Line) -> Power pump
When switch from water hot water heater is OFF, retrieve integer from server, power for n seconds. n>= 0

    Suggestions/advice appreciated

    Iotty and IFTTT

    Posted: 11 May 2021 07:07 PM PDT

I'm trying to setup my light connected to an iotty smart switch to turn on when my garage door (myq) opens. Only platform (I think) that can do this is IFTTT. Unfortunately, as we all know, IFTTT sucks and for whatever reason has a vague error when I try to connect the iotty service. So 1) has anyone had this issue before and/or 2) is there something else I can do to achieve this MyQ/iotty connection?

    Thanks in advance!

How to effectively setup cameras but still maintain privacy with internal storage?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 08:26 PM PDT

Any suggestions on how to setup cameras in the home so that privacy is still a thing. I would use local recording most likely and obviously not put one in the bathroom but how do you deal with bedrooms?

Anyone have experience with the EAGLE-200 or RainforestAutomation? Support is giving me the run-around.

    Posted: 11 May 2021 08:20 PM PDT

I've been keen to add electricity monitoring to my setup, and heard great things about the EAGLE-200, so I bought one.

After some back and forth with my utility, the device was successfully paired, but wasn't reporting any data. I contacted RainforestAutomation support, figuring I was doing something wrong.

Nope. Turns out the firmware on my EAGLE-200 is too old to talk with their system. Seems like a simple fix, but there's no way to update the firmware on the user's end.

    Hi Mitchell,

After multiple attempts to update your device over the past few days, our team was not able to successfully upgrade the firmware. Unfortunately, due to your device running on outdated firmware it rejected the update requests even with extensive troubleshooting. If you are interested in our service feel free to purchase a new Eagle-200 with fully updated software at the link below. > Eagle-200: https://rainforestautomation.com/us-retail-store/eagle-200-smart-meter-energy-gateway/ > Best Regards, Rainforest Automation.

Quite literally, buy another piece of hardware that is identical to your hardware, because we're too lazy or inept to actually update the firmware for devices in the wild.

    So I shot back:

I'm sorry, but "buy a new one of the exact same thing you have" is not an acceptable solution here. > I'm more than willing to work through updating the firmware on my Eagle-200, including side-loading and making use of what I assume is a service port in the on-board USB-A port. I'm even willing to ship this to you so you can update the firmware on-site. "Buy another one" in lieu of actually updating my firmware is bad advice, and if you're unable to help me, I'll need to speak to another agent or be pushed up a tier of support.

I didn't get escalated or passed to another agent. I got another reply.

Hi Mitchell, > Your ticket already got escalated to our technical team for further investigation, and they mentioned that is no way to sideload the firmware via the USB port. In order to re-program the device, the motherboard needs to be hooked up to a programming board/dongle. > Best Regards, Rainforest Support.

They then closed the ticket. I replied and am awaiting literally any response.

Does anyone know if I have any other recourse here? Sure the device doesn't support anything without the cloud integration, which I've made peace with. But the solution of buying identical hardware from them directly seems really asinine when there's no difference between what I have in my hand and what they're selling, other than I need to pay more for ones they've already updated the hardware on.

    Easiest to use system

    Posted: 11 May 2021 07:39 PM PDT

I have sold my house and I have a bunch of z-wave switches, dimmers and switched outlets installed. I currently use home assistant. I get the impression (I might be wrong) that the buyers are not very tech savvy, so I am thinking I might hook them up with a simple commercially supported system.

The system must support z-wave, must be easy to use, and subscription free. Any recommendations?

    Feature wishlist for Alexa/Google/Homepods?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 06:41 PM PDT

What do you wish your smart speaker / voice assistant could do that it doesn't do currently? Or, what things you wish they were better at?

I'll kick it off. For me:

    • I wish they worked offline for controlling lights
    • I wish it didn't take so many tries for me to stop a timer

Anyone have good tips for a multi-protocol smart home?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 06:30 PM PDT

I just closed on a coop in NYC, and want to try to make as much of it "smart" as possible. However, I don't want to have to get stuck into only using just one ecosystem - my current apartment everything is using Google Home for integration, and mostly Ikea Tradfri (never again) and Logitech Harmony (solely to blast IR to different rooms to control the AC).

For my new place, I'm looking for:

    • Smart lock
    • Smart lighting/lighting plates - would love the ability for dimming, colors, zoned lighting, etc. Not a fan of Hue simply because price is dumb.
    • Robot vacuum (currently have a basic Roomba, debating buying one of those Shark mop+vacuum in ones)
    • Mechanism to control the AC in three rooms - these all use IR remotes
    • Alarm system/camera (Ring?)
    • Panel - I'd love a panel that I can mount in the wall. I have no issue having to code anything using an available framework, though out of the box is best
    • Shades - Not sure what I will go with yet since it doesn't seem there are so many options, but love the idea of being able to control my shades
    • Music. Debating a soundbar in each room, maybe Sonos or Bose.
    • Thermostat - if there is a way i can leverage some sensors to control the ACs in each room, that would be excellent, but not sure the best way beyond arduino sensors connecting to a hub connected to logitech harmony

I don't want to limit myself to one specific ecosystem if it won't cover everything. I really wish https://atmoshome.com/ existed. The Brilliant switch def seems interesting - https://www.brilliant.tech/pages/smart-home-control-system

Any ideas on what products you'd recommend for these functions, and a way to control them all? If I had to choose, Google Home over Alexa any day.

    ActionTiles and DAKBoard

    Posted: 11 May 2021 04:05 PM PDT

Does anyone know if there's a product that bundles the functionality of these two applications? I really need a digital calendar that syncs with Google, but if I'm going to mount a screen on the wall it would be nice to have it also control devices connected to SmartThings. Bonus points if it can control Amazing smart plugs.

    Thanks!

Lutron Homeworks QSX vs Crestron Home

    Posted: 11 May 2021 03:15 PM PDT

I'm putting in a home automation system to control lights & shades. I'm choosing between Lutron Homeworks QSX and Crestron Home. I take it as a given that both of these systems are going to work well for controlling lights and shades. Which one is going to give me more control to adjust the settings without having to call the dealer? Are there other trade-offs I should be aware of in deciding between these two systems?

    Hub Question...Do I Understand This?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 10:27 AM PDT

So i just bought a home and there are things I would love to automate, mostly lights at this time. for example, have my exterior porch lights turn on and off at 7AM & 7PM respectively.

I have about 15 lights that I would like to have controlled. From my understanding this many devices should utilize a hub of some kind instead of gathering a WiFi signal from the router.

The hubs generally use zigbee or zwave tech to allow the bulbs or other devices to speak with the hub and the hub itself then is what is connected to the WiFi, thereby reducing traffic on the router. Is my understanding of this correct?

If so, is there a preferred hub? I have Home Assistant installed on a VM on my Windows PC, however I know that is not a hub, more or less a means to control/set the schemes for the things I wish to automate. If I purchase a hub like SmartThings, will i still be able to get specific about programming when lights turn on and off etc via HA?

IDK, I just am kind of confused about once everything is linked to a zigbee/zwave hub how they then can be controlled/automated since they are not directly on the WiFi.

    Thanks

    Mini smart Dehumidifier

    Posted: 11 May 2021 09:32 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm looking for a compact dehumidifier with smart functionality, possibly compatible with HomeKit even via an HomeBridge plugin.

Tried to search online but couldn't find any, if they were smart they were also too big.

I would like to place it in a small bathroom that gets very foggy during showers, even with the window open.

    Even alternative solutions are welcomed.

    Thanks a lot!

Looking for recommendations on a smart door lock for commerical doors, pictured below.

I'm looking for a smart door lock that will work with a commercial door (ie non a standard house deadbolt). This is what it looks like.

The metal 'bolt' flips up to lock the door.

Looking for one that has wifi, ability to change codes remotely, etc.
