new large house, noob on automation

    Posted: 14 May 2021 10:46 PM PDT

I never for a million years thought I'd be looking into home automation. But here I am with a new big house. I don't know how simple or complex my needs are:

House is three floors with two decks. There are doors, windows, and lights galore. First floor (main floor) has 4 doors, 2 of those 4 doors have access to the same deck. There are 41 recessed lights (with 41 bulbs), not counting pendant lights. 2nd floor there are another 25 or so recessed lights and basement has about another 20 or so recessed lights and 3 doors all which access the lower deck. This does not include the garage lights and 3 doors, one of which enters the residence from the garage. This does not include any stand alone lamps around the house.

outside there are a total of 12 (i think) exterior light fixtures, not including landscape lighting which im still trying to figure out how many and where.

I am looking to add a monitored security system (with outdoor cameras, many indoor and outdoor, motion sensors, door breach sensors, window break sensors) and I am considering switches instead of smart bulbs however I am new to this space and still making considerations.

What are some of the considerations I should have if i wanted to integrate indoor lights with security system, OR even ALL lights integrated into the security system? For example have a rule to turn on certain lights if certain motion sensor goes off? Or if the alarm goes off certain lights turn on, etc. Or to change the bulb color to blue/red/green whatever color if the alarm or motion sensor goes off?

How difficult will it be to include outdoor lights into the same rule system, for example if exterior motion is detected, turn on one of the colored lights inside the house?, etc. All exterior lights have a switch inside the residence.

Do certain brands work well with each other what type of system (or hub) should I be looking into?

Lastly, I would prefer to have a system (or multiple systems that communicate well) that does not need cloud or internet, however I am new to home automation and will take advice.

If you've read this far, thank you.

I linked all Aqara ZigBee sensors to ZigBee2MQTT and made a dashboard for each one of them in NodeRED.

Lutron Casets works with hub disconnected

    Posted: 14 May 2021 02:02 PM PDT

Ok, I always knew the wall dimmers should work whether the hub is there or not.

But the lamp modules still work when pushing a Pico switch when the hub is offline. Awesome!

I'm packing up and moving to a new place. I packed up the hub in a box, then started gathering together some of my lamp modules. When I went to grab one of the last modules, I bumped the button on the Pico remote for it and the lamp turned on.

It must be some sort of bus network rather than a hub and spoke to allow the lamp module to receive the command to turn on from the Pico without the hub being plugged in.

Any experience with Neato customer service?

    Posted: 14 May 2021 02:45 PM PDT

I have a D7 that is just out of warranty. The laser sensor is broken and the only option they gave me was to ship it to a 3rd party to have repaired (which after speaking with the 3rd party will cost about $200)

Any other options? I was planning on getting a 2nd Neato but I am about to go Roborock instead after this.

Tracking per-room temperature/humidity for Victorian home with Radiant Floor Heat

    Posted: 14 May 2021 06:05 AM PDT

We live near Franklin, VA in a 120+ year old house with a dirt basement of about 1300 sq ft, two floors of about 3000 sq ft, and a 900sq ft finished (but not adequately remodeled/HVAC'd) third floor. The saving grace is the natural gas (tankless) radiant floor heating and the very high ceilings help to keep the home "feeling cooler." The home is aluminum siding on a brick foundation, with limited insulation except in the case of the 1st floor, down in the basement.

    Problem:

    1. It's been difficult to track temperatures per room and per radiant loop. Manually optimizing between two 3.5 ton HVAC systems and the radiant system is a challenge with this home, especially when it's 80f during the day and 40f some nights repetitively.
      1. The radiant system temperature and recirculation rates can be fine tuned per floor and to some degree per room.
    2. Though the dirt basement is dry, I have a feeling it is leaking humidity into the home. I want to chart the differences in humidity per all four levels.

    Data Goal:

    1. Track per-room temperature/humidity throughout the home.
      1. 8 sensors on the first floor.
        1. Bonus, track carbon monoxide on the 1st floor since there are multiple "ventless" fireplaces and a gas stove.
      2. 10 sensors on the second floor.
      3. 3 sensors on the semi-finished third floor.
    2. 3 sensors to track air temps/humidity at the three HVAC returns and the output near the air handler.
    3. 2 sensors track cold and heated water temperatures for the gas water heater system located in the basement (two sensors).
    4. 2 sensors track inlet and outlet temperature for the tankless radiant floor heating system located in the basement.
    5. Track basement temperature/humidity/soil moisture?
    6. Track a couple of weather APIs to compare against.
    7. Bonus, track energy usage of both HVAC systems and water heaters.
    8. Bonus, track water pressure at various inlets/outlets or even per stage in the whole home water system.

    Automation:

    1. Use data to save money by identifying and maintaining as close to a stable daily temperature each day, around the year.
    2. Smart thermostat's for all three systems (radiant system also has dual (room for a third) zone recirculating pumps.
    3. Alerts when temps/humidity/soil moisture exceeds threshold.
    4. Bonus, automate running basement dehumidifier.

    Considerations:

    • I am starting from scratch, but am more of a hardware guy than a software/programmer.
      • How do I go from "Zero to Automation?"
      • I am hoping to use a Raspberry Pi and/or my Unraid server (primarily used for computer backups with parity).
    • I like the "idea" of using OpenHAB with some 3D Printed, Wood PLA cased, Raspberry Pi Zero W's but I don't have the time to mess with software problems. I would prefer to purchase something, pair it to the "system" and start getting data.

Beginner question: How do I cheaply and easily set a lightbulb to turn on when I get a notification from a certain app on my iPhone?

    Posted: 14 May 2021 11:27 AM PDT

I'm clearly brand new to this. I'm a fireman in a grossly underfunded and overworked department and I'm looking for a solution for my late-night calls.

I receive alerts on my iPhone when my station gets a 911 call, and I'm wondering if there's an easy way to automatically turn a lightbulb on when my phone gets the alert. Many departments have very expensive systems that do this automatically. Things like, turn the lights on, open the bay doors, cut power to the oven, stove, etc.

I'm starting small though, and I'd like to know from all you automation guru's what the cheapest and easiest way to get a light automatically turned on. I'd be spending out of my own pocket, the department wouldn't cover it.

I know this is a super novice question. I appreciate any/all help I can get. Just looking for a point in the right direction. Thanks everyone!

    Garage door opener/controller recommendations

    Posted: 14 May 2021 03:07 PM PDT

    A. That can connect via hard wire Ethernet and does NOT require unreliable WiFi.

    B. That does NOT require Internet/cloud access to perform basic monitoring and control via the local LAN, even when there is no Internet connectivity (Its okay if it supports an optional Cloud service, as long as the cloud service isn't the ONLY way to use it)

    C. That is not a "project" requiring cobbling something homebrew together from components.

Does anything like this exist, at all? I've been looking for some time but all my searches so far lead to ones that do not meet one (or more) of the above criteria.

Eufy vs Wyze (Cameras and more) and more

    Posted: 14 May 2021 08:18 AM PDT

Hey guys! I'm building more and more automation around my house. So far I just have a Nest Thermostat and 3 Nest protects as far as "smart things" go. For voice control/monitoring, we have Google Nest Minis and Amazon Echos all over the house and one Nest Hub in the kitchen.

I plan to add more smart devices/things but I'm worried about ending up in "vendor lock-in" with either Amazon or Google so I'm leaning towards third-party cameras and plugs and stuff. I ***really want*** to minimize the amount of vendors/apps I have in the mix as I add cameras, sensors, and other "things" to my home.

Right now I'm looking at Eufy and Wyze for cameras. I have a couple of each running as test units right now and so far they're both doing well. I like Eufy's detection without having to pay for a "Cam Plus" subscription, but I don't want to have two apps (Eufy Home, Eufy Security) to manage a potential fleet of Eufy endpoints. The Wyze cams are doing well so far but I'm hoping to avoid paying a monthly fee for people/package/pet detection when Eufy does that for free.

I want to add humidity sensors in my basement and contact sensors for doors and windows down the road, too...

I'm also curious how Samsung Smart Things work into this mix.

What would you guys recommend? How many vendors do you have involved in your home setup? My dream would be to have everything tie into Google AND Alexa so my family can use all the devices without having to have a bunch of new apps on their phones. What do you think?

    Automated blackout blinds

    Posted: 14 May 2021 09:13 AM PDT

My room gets super light in the morning, so I need to put up some shades. Problem is, my windows are a bit wider than normal so it looks like I'm going to have to get something custom. I measured and it looks like I'm going to need to cover

64" W and 43" long (that just overlaps the raised window border and that's from a current current rod just paste the bottom of the window border)

Not looking for anything super fancy, but it does need to be a serious blackout blind since its really bright around 6am. I think Lowe's you can get custom length ones but the automation part is what I'm not sure about

Ideally it will be able to tie into Home Assistant, or if its something someone has hacked to work with home assistant that's good to.

Since I don't have anything currently I'm open to pretty much any suggestion.

    Thanks!

A virtual toggle switch (not button) for routines and ifttt bridge

    Posted: 14 May 2021 10:52 AM PDT

Is there any service that can be used with a routine in Alexa to capture a state from an event? For example if guard mode set to away I want to capture this as a "state" or almost a virtual toggle switch. Then in IFTTT I want to be able to use this as a query condition in my trigger event. I am trying to have my smart lights turn on at a certain hour if Alexa guard is set to away only. I just need some sort of inbetween to bridge Alexa and IFTTT. Then my rule in IFTTT to turn on the lights could check if guard was set to away or home as a query condition. I have the ability in Alexa to write a trigger when guard set to home or away, just need to persist this state. Like a virtual toggle switch. Make sense ?

Intel nuc/hardware suggestions for home automation

    Posted: 14 May 2021 10:41 AM PDT

I've been recently working on making my house a smart home and learned of home assistant and its automations. I've seen several videos and post about using an Intel nuc but not 100% what to start with i3,i5, or i7.

Here are some of the items I would like to automate with my HA. -5 internal/5 external camera with person detection for my home. Currently have 5x 5mp reolink cameras outside my home on a nvr setup and will be adding 5 more for inside my home. -rachio smart sprinkler system -myq garage door opener -honeywell t9 smart thermostat and room sensors -schlage smart lock for my front door -i am in the process of ordering smart blinds for my home -i also am looking to change the dimmer switches in my home to zigbee compatible ones . -long term I would love to have a plex server for movies and shows but not required.

Like I said I'm new to all of this so I'm open to any and all suggestions and feedback. Links to purchase any recommended hardware is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Need something better than IFTT and have a specific request too...

    Posted: 14 May 2021 10:18 AM PDT

Tried IFTT and couldn't get it to load options in the drop down menus so gave up on it. What other options are there for home automation apps? Also, the specific request.... Is there something that enables an action such as "when fitbit is in range of xyz location, abc light turns on". I don't have the GPS on my phone on at all times but my versa 3 has gps and I'm wanting to be able to get home from work and the inside light be on when I unlock the door. Can't set a routine with specific time for this due to shifts finishing at different times (stevedore, nightshift).

How to automate the exhaust fan in kitchen.

    Posted: 14 May 2021 08:41 AM PDT

Hi good afternoon to everyone one, hope you are all well and safe.

I have an exhaust fan in the kitchen, with a regular switch, I will like to know if there is a way that I can automate this exhaust fan with an smart switch, so I can schedule times that It can turn on and off more regularly, we normally use it when we are cooking, I also turn it when we go to sleep together with the Air Purifier in our Living Room, since I wake up frequently during the night, I turn it off after 2 to 3 hours...

Any ideas how to automate this?

Also if I have a ceiling fan that is not smart, can I automate this with a smart switch?

    Thanks

Remote Wifi Enabled Thermostat Through Phone Data

    Posted: 14 May 2021 07:23 AM PDT

I have a weekender cabin that I only visit during (usually every other) weekends. Sometimes, I'll have unexpected guest that come during the week. I have a Mr. Cool thermostat that can be controlled via Wifi. I don't have Wifi, but I do have a spare phone - with accompanying number - and unlimited data through T-Mobile. The Mr. Cool thermostat has an app that allows for remote monitoring and adjustment. Additionally, the thermostat recognizes Alexa and Google Assistant. I would like to monitor the thermostat remotely. Can anyone think of a scenario given the details that I've provided that would allow for remote monitoring and adjustment through phone data? Thanks for any help.

    Museum RGB system help

    Posted: 14 May 2021 06:43 AM PDT

I'm looking for suggestions/recommendations on commercial-grade RGB lighting systems. I'm not sure if this is the best sub to ask in. Please point me elsewhere if not. My needs and goals are below:

    • I want to start off small, with a controller and accent lighting in one gallery space. My budget is small, but money trickles in. The system needs to be modular. I'd like to be able to add lighting features when able, without having to contract a programmer everytime I want to make changes. Hiring in for initial install and occasional work is OK.

    • Wireless control - I don't want to have to run anything but power whenever new lights are added. I'd also like to be able to take control with a tablet app.

I'm familiar with theatrical DMX lighting, consumer brands like Philips and generic Zigbee, and limited with Lutron, Crestron, etc. I've thought about having a QSC system built for me, but I'm unsure of how much freedom I'll have to build on that in-house.

This will not replace the main lighting, but rather accent areas and offer color control to work with events.

    Thoughts?
