What automation really makes your home feel like a home from the future?

    Posted: 15 May 2021 07:43 PM PDT

While some of my home automation is just pure convenience, there's some stuff that just has an absolute wow factor.

I'd love to hear what's yours?

    read water/electric meter digits

    Posted: 15 May 2021 08:04 PM PDT

I've been trying to think of a good way to read water meters and use a mix of OpenCV and maybe tensorflow to do digit recognition. I don't know the details well enough, but it looks like someone has already done a lot of this work:

    https://github.com/jomjol/water-meter-system-complete

His project evolved to using an ESP32 to do the entire reading. But I liked his first attempt where the image can come from anywhere, and a docker container receive the image, provides a web UI to make adjustments and configure where the data goes to. That way, the image can come from an ESP32 w/ a cam, or even a wifi camera, and the inference sits nicely in a VM on your server. Keeps the complex software on the easier-to-manage server, while the hardware on the edge is just a simple camera.

Wondering if anyone has gone through the work of doing something like this. Maybe you've used an even better docker image?

I know some rtl-sdr projects out there can read the radio signals from these meters. But I like the machine vision method better, applies to more meters for me.

    Default Shelly setup through electrician?

    Posted: 15 May 2021 10:15 PM PDT

We are renovating our entire home, all new wiring etc. The electricians are about to come this week to do the final installation, including a bunch of shelly devices. My goal is to integrate the devices in to home assistant later on, as soon as we have wifi and internet again.

How do we/the electricians proceed in the meantime? How/what do they need to configure the shellys in order for me to set them up later on, without me having to touch any wiring? I never installed or set up one so far.

If you could only automate 3 processes or have 3 smart-devices, what would they be?

Good, cheap Zigbee/Zwave hub that works locally? - or - How to integrate with SmartThings hub locally?

    Posted: 15 May 2021 02:25 AM PDT

So I'm new to Zigbee and Z-Wave, and bought a used SmartThings Gen2 hub, thinking it was a cheap way to get a decent hub.

It works a treat, I was able to add several things right away and they work reasonably well (the app loves to complain about being offline after opening it after being idle for a while, but whatever).

However, I didn't realize that integrating with Home Assistant meant opening an endpoint in my firewall, and on a well-known port, and etc. I don't like - but tolerate for now - having some things controlled via the cloud, but I really don't want to open the public firewall at all, that crosses the line a bit for me. Not worried about Samsung, but I don't want to have to worry about the general Internet attacking that port constantly.

Anyway, any suggestions on a decent, basic hub that does both Z-Wave and Zigbee? That's under $50 or so (maybe used)? I don't care about other protocols, and the only thing I want to do with it is integrate devices with Home Assistant. I suppose I could do two hubs but I'd prefer to just do 1.

Or if anyone has pointers on getting a SmartThings hub to work local-only, that'd be great, but basic research tells me that's not really a thing.

    Motorised Curtain Recommendations

    Posted: 15 May 2021 02:59 PM PDT

Hi Home Automaton folks with more experience than I!

My wife and I are looking for some motorised curtains, but getting lost with the wide selection and sometimes lack of detail on manufacturers' sites.

Was hoping to get some recommendations based on our desired requirements. Anyone have a suggestion that meets the following:

    • Auto and manual operation - for manual, we'd really like to be able to just manually draw the curtain if we want, even when it's powered on - so not just 'tug to activate' style manual, but full manual draw
    • Local operation/integration (Zigbee, ZWave, or WiFi) - while I'm happy for there to be a Cloud service, I don't want to have to rely on it
    • Rod or rail - we're easy
    • Wall plug or hard-wireable
    • In Australia, but happy to order international for the right product
    • 3.8m span
    • No specific budget, just looking at options

    Thanks in advance

Best Smart PADlocks? - And which ones alert you when they are being tampered with?

    Posted: 15 May 2021 12:24 PM PDT

    Hi,
I know you folks have covered smartlocks before, but I can't find discussions on smart PADlocks, for outdoors. I having an even harder time finding information anywhere on the net about which ones alert you as they are being tampered with.
Anyone give me advice or information on those two points?

Confirm my thinking: Shelly 1 with 120v motion sensor, no load

    Posted: 15 May 2021 06:50 AM PDT

I have existing outdoor lights with no motion sensor and no access to the wiring. I do have accessible wiring elsewhere. Since there don't seem to be outdoor motion sensors in the smart home market other than Hue, I'm thinking of taking the type that is meant for direct wiring to the lights, and connecting it to the switch input of a Shelly 1. With no load on the Shelly, I'll just use MQTT or Tasmota messaging from the Shelly to switch on another smart switch controlling the lights.

Does anyone see a problem with this plan? Any better solutions? This is in New England, so surviving harsh winters (but not Canadian levels of "harsh") is a requirement.

what is the best smart switch to use in tandem with philips hue smart bulbs, using google home?

    Posted: 15 May 2021 01:44 AM PDT

My house is packed with smart bulbs, but i just got a new light fixture with 5 bulb slots, and i was wondering instead of buying 5 philips hue bulbs, can i use 5 regular bulbs and use a smart switch that cuts the power (like a regular switch) but can be used with google assistant. i just want to be able to say "turn on the lights in the dining room" and have the switch be in the lights section of the home app. is this possible?

edit: i know there are 2 types of smart switches, ones that connect to the internet and can cut power (like a regular one) by using your phone or voice, and other smart switches that just connect to the philips hue app and only send a message to the bulbs to turn off, not cutting the power to them. I want the former.

WigWag Relay Hub? Still a thing?

    Posted: 15 May 2021 11:26 AM PDT

Yeah, so I have one of these hubs, but it seems like WigWag is a figment of my imagination now. Is there any way to use it anymore? Any chance anyone has been working on something that would breathe life back into it before I recycle it? All suggestions appreciated...

    accurate weather conditions for Node-Red?

    Posted: 15 May 2021 03:03 PM PDT

I'm using openweathermap node in Node-Red to get temperature/humidity/wind. It's super inaccurate. Like off by 6 degrees in accurate.

Does anyone have a better Node-Red compatible service they use for weather?

    Tablet constant charging idea

    Posted: 15 May 2021 10:40 AM PDT

I plan to install an ipad (set up in single app mode) as a wall panel, having it plugged into a recessed outlet box. But I've been thinking about how constantly charging the ipad will affect the battery in the long run. I thought of an idea to use siri automations to send an HTTP request to my hubitat/alexa to turn on/off the power to the ipad when certain battery levels are reached. Is this endeavor even worth it? I'm aware that apple has thought of this and will cease charging if the battery is getting too warm, and the 100% according to the phone already is within a safe range, but would it still be beneficial to keep the battery level to an even more strict range? Considering apple most likely wasn't assuming a device would be plugged in for months at a time. Maybe I could figure out how to let it completely discharge and charge back up to 100% once a month for a charge cycle too. IF this is even worth it, what device should I use to control the power? I was thinking a Shelly but after some research I'm still a little confused how that works, since all installations procedures I found entailed connecting directly to a light swtich, using a lot more wires that would be in my case. Is it just as simple as line in, neutrals, and line out?

How to get client id and client secret from Wiz

    Posted: 15 May 2021 01:19 PM PDT

Im writing my own integration and reading their docs here https://docs.pro.wizconnected.com/?javascript#authorisation says

    > Before start you need to obtain clientId and clientSecret from WiZ.

I've created an account at https://pro.wizconnected.com/ and clicked all over the place, no luck. I have a working light that I control from my phone with the Wiz app, gone all over that app and no luck.

I have also sent a chat to their support but havent received a reply yet (its saturday night, they probably will reply on monday) so maybe Im being impatient, but if anyone knows of a no-human-needed way I'd be thankful to know about it

3 way Touchpad line voltage dimmer?

    Posted: 15 May 2021 08:57 AM PDT

Is there a very thin line voltage dimmer switch with a large touchpad area? I'm trying to recreate the functionality of an undercabinet low voltage on/off dimmer touchpad with a line voltage device. All the line voltage dimmers I can find have very specific and small touchpad areas, which is not ideal if the switch is under the cabinet and operated by feel rather than sight.

My undercabinet lights are wired to a set of line voltage three way switches - One switch under cabinets and another nearby on wall. I would like to replace these on/off switches with dimmer switches as my LED driver for my undercab lights and the lights are dimmable. I would also like to connect the lights to my Zwave network. I think the only reasonable way to keep the 3 way function is to leave both switches line voltage, but happy to be corrected.

For the wall switch I can easily install a 3 way Zwave dimmer.

For the undercabinet switch, I need a line voltage 3 way dimmer with touchpad. Is there such a thing?
Do I need Z wave at only one of the switches or both? If the undercabinet switch also needs to be zwave, I could make it so by adding an Aeotec Nano dimmer.

    Posted: 15 May 2021 10:42 AM PDT

So what I want to do is pushing an ikea shortcut button on my washing machine when i start it. When it's done 2,5h later, I'd like to get a notification on my phone. I tried severall things but with ikea tradfri and apple home, this seems to be impossible. Has anybody an idea how to make this happen?
