Convert building intercom to smart intercom?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 12:30 PM PDT

Is there any way to convert this old intercom into a smart intercom that I can buzz people in with my phone? I don't want to change anything outside my unit.

Why doesn’t this work? I want my lights to turn on if light level reaches 38 lux and if time is between 4 and 10 pm. But it doesn’t work.

Hyperion - the passthrough on the capture card works just fine, but the pi is only receiving static. Bad card or did I mess up my settings?

Is there a way to estimate coverage of my 6 Zigbee repeaters? 1 is the ConBee II hub, the rest are IKEA Trådfri repeaters. I have devices connecting to the "not nearest" all the time.

What can I do with all these blinds?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 07:27 AM PDT

I just bought my dream house, and it came with a substantial (35 blinds) installation of what I think are Hunter Douglas Silhouette blinds in a large central room with two story windows. There are wall switches that actuate various sections, and they actually work pretty well, considering. One blind is missing, a couple are out of sync, and one doesn't detect full retraction correctly. All of these seem fixable except perhaps for the missing blind. I would love to automate these, however it's possible I'll have to redo the whole system. If that's the case, it looks like they all have 24V supplies, which seems like the only route I could go, unless there's somehow a solar option? Assuming I can find parts, is there a retrofit option? If not, what's the most cost-effective way to get this kind of coverage? I'm definitely willing to go full zigbee or z-wave. https://imgur.com/a/2qocN3M/

Edit: I should clarify that I found a label that indicates that these are Hunter Douglas silhouette blinds, and they appear to have been installed in 2002

Cancelled alarm.com monitoring through CPI because of reasons.. Now what?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 07:14 PM PDT

Was paying $60 a month for a monitored system that family members did not activate or use properly half the time.

But now I want the tech to still work, what's my options? I have several Alexa devices, Yale Z wave door locks, Skybell front doorbell camera, smart lights and switches controlled through the Alexa and the app on phone.

I would not mind a low cost monitoring service if an app was included, but I'm on sure where to start. Can I use my existing door and window sensors with a system like Abode that were for alarm.com?? Are there other options? Doesn't look like much beside simplisafe and ring.

Door sensor vs motion detection camera for security

    Posted: 13 May 2021 10:44 PM PDT

Im moving to my new apartment and think that it might be a good idea to set up some sort of security system for my front door and balcony. Im considering two ways to do it. First is to set up a camera and implement some sort of motion detection code. If it detects movement when I'm not home then it sends me a notification. The other way is to use a door sensor and then let the system notify me if the door is opened when I'm not home.

I live alone so I can see both methods working just fine. I have enough parts to do either of the two. I'm quite new to home automation so I'm wondering if you guys have some insight on this.

Looking for a WiFi room temperature sensor for Smart things or Home assistant.

    Posted: 13 May 2021 06:59 PM PDT

As title says looking for a WiFi temp sensor, not zigbee or zwave. I have a building on my property that has wifi but isn't in range of the smart things hub.

Smart aroma diffuser with multiple aromas?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 10:43 AM PDT

Not sure if something like this even exist since I couldn't find any, but hopefully the wise community here will know if one exists.

So, I would like to have smart aroma diffuser that can be automated to diffuse aromas based on time of the day and/or movement in the area AND to have multiple cartridges with different aromas so I can choose one based on the mood or a scene. Now that would be some next level shit, right?

    Smart Sprinklers

    Posted: 13 May 2021 10:12 AM PDT

What's the best solution for a smart sprinkler setup? I have a lot of plants and summer heat is my greatest problem. Does anybody know any good smart valves that can connect to a regular hose valve(no digging and connecting new pipes), and can be controlled through smartphone?

    Need to replace driveway lights.

    Posted: 13 May 2021 12:43 PM PDT

Our house has 3 sconce lights on the front to light the driveway. These are always on but the lights have solar sensors so they turn on at sunset and off at dawn. The middle one has stopped working. I tried looking around and a lot of the external smart lights are quite plain looking and I don't think my wife will like them. So I'm thinking that going with a ordinary fixture and either smart bulbs or a smart switch are the best way to go. I do have a 3 bulb Hue system I got as a gift, my wife would love the ability to change colors for holidays. Are these safe to use in an outdoor covered light?

My basic requirements are I want to turn the lights on at sunset and off at sunrise. They need to connect to existing 120v power and color would be a plus.

best way to monitor for smoke/co?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 08:01 AM PDT

Hi all, just in process of planning our home automation and alarm system. Wondering what you have all done to monitor smoke/co? We currently have the normal interconnected alarms in the house which obviously I can't give up. Is there a way to replace ONE of the current smoke/co with a zwave or similar that will connect with Elk for monitoring? Do I have to yank them all out and replace, or is there a single "listener" that can be installed to connect? I think first alert has something like that to add to their own ecosystem but it's not possible to wire it for home automation.

Is it my Vera hub, or google home telling vera hub to turn everything on after a power outage?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 06:13 PM PDT

Really the only thing I care about is that it's turning "on" and opening my garage door opener (go control z-wave add on opener)

Any idea where to start looking on how to change this behavior, at least for this device?

Can I replace my Honeywell T4 with a T6 and use the same wiring plate?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 08:20 AM PDT

I have a T4 Pro currently installed and am wondering if I can just pop on a T6 controller using the same base plate and have it work. The photos look the same and the wiring diagrams look the same.

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Guy in this video does the same thing so I think I am good to go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxqMW8nb5uQ

How do I hard reset a Nest thermostat 4th gen?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 09:37 AM PDT

I received A nest thermostat with the mirrored face from my dad a few weeks ago. He bought it without realizing that his wiring was not compatible. He never set it up. When I attempted to install it the screen says to use the Google Home app. When I try to set it up on the app, I am getting an error message saying that it needs to be reset. I've tried removing and reinstalling the batteries and I'm getting the same results. The google troubleshooting article the app directs me to is not helpful. Anyone have any ideas?

Overwhelmed with creating smart home. I want outdoor and indoor lights smart. I would like outdoor lights motion sensing or just switched on if needed and dimmable. Do I need a hub?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 05:49 AM PDT

I have smartthings hub zigbee and zwave. I can't do extensive programming on it. I want the ability to have decorative outdoor lighting on garage that I can control remotely , with motion sensing and lumen adjustability. The front door light I want the option to motion sense or leave on. Is this impossible? I'm buying all new decorative lights outdoor so not sure if I need special lights?

    Motion/GPS Sensors

    Posted: 13 May 2021 06:39 AM PDT

    Hi,

If I wanted to find a sensor that is ideally the size of a watch face or smaller that could be used to detect motion and then could be tracked via GPS does anyone have a recommendation? Maybe this is some sort of acceleration sensor?

The example is theft of something small and when it gets moved I receive a notification and front there I am able to track its location.

Or if I have wood in my wood shed and people keep stealing the wood, if I had some sort of sensor that detected the wood being moved I would receive a notification.

    Thank you.

    Best Robot Vacuum 2021

    Posted: 13 May 2021 03:19 AM PDT

Trying to decide which robot to get, I have these 2 requirements:

    • Must have mopping capabilities
    • Must empty itself at the station

I don't mind paying a premium if it gives me a better product that performs better. What would be the best robot available right now?

This 360 S10 seems really promising and the best available but it does not empty itself at the station, so I guess I would prefer to get something else: 360 Robot Vacuum Cleaner S10: Mop&Carpet Cleaning | Indiegogo

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Best cleaning robot on the market right now?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 07:22 AM PDT

Hi, I'm new to cleaning robots and I'd like to purchase my first one, so since I saw there's a detailed 2020 chart I'd like to ask your opinions on what's the best right now.
I don't have carpets so that's not an issue, and I'd like something that works decently on rooms with a lot of edges due to random furniture being in the way.
I don't see in the 2020 chart something that can do both mopping and empty itself, I'd like to have both otherwise just mopping would be fine.

I'd like to gift it to my mother to help her out as much as possible, she's the skeptical boomer type so I just want to impress her with the best. Price doesn't matter.

Thank you very much for helping me out!

Network Problem with multiple smart devices

    Posted: 13 May 2021 02:20 AM PDT

I have both a Broadlink RM Pro + and an Aqara Home Hub. Both fail while trying to connect through the standard setup and then both can connect to the device in AP mode but the connection of the device to the wifi then fails. I bought the broadlink first and thought I may have got a dud but with the same issue on the Aqara Hub I feel its more likely something else.

I have an ASUS RT-AC86U router and have attempted turning off the 5GHz channel, disabling the firewall and restarting everything multiple times. There's a tonne of settings in the router that I don't understand and Im not sure what else I should be trying.

Any suggestions on what could be causing this issue would be greatly appreciated
