Do Not Buy Sylvania Smart+ Bulbs Posted: 20 May 2021 02:16 PM PDT Buying Sylvania zigbee bulbs has been my #1 home automation regret. Their failure rate is abysmally high. I've bought ~18 or so of their bulbs, and the failure rate, including the warranty replacements, are ~65% (so far). Most fail within 6 months, some wait 18 months. I've only had 1 last 2 years. This includes both the regular A19 bulbs as well as the canned BR30 bulbs. And it includes both the full color and the temp-controllable bulbs. No Sylvania bulb is safe from these failures. They are lowered priced than their competitors for a reason. They are cheaping out on some components. Waste this blatant should be illegal. [link] [comments]

Trying to automate hallway light brightness based on time Posted: 20 May 2021 07:02 PM PDT I've recently gone through the house and updated all of the switches in our old-ish home. We're loving all the smart home features now, got Lutron Casetas all over, automations when coming home, arming our security, all that good stuff. Seeing the happy faces as everything starts coming together is nice! That is, everything except for this one hallway with several switches on a single circuit that I'm still a little unsure on how I'd like to wire. https://i.imgur.com/9TVrS6D.jpg I've attached a crude drawing of the hallway, where the switches are in red and the fixtures they turn on are in orange. The switches with stars are the three way switches at the start and end of the circuit; the others are four way switches in the middle. Every bedroom has access to the fixtures when leaving the room, but I would like them to not be so bright when turning them on in the middle of the night, yet still be at full brightness when turned on at other times like earlier in the evening. So:
I know that smart bulbs can adjust their brightness over time, but I'm sure that shutting off the power when the switch is flipped off would cause issues. So is there a way for a switch that is flipped off to put the smart bulb at 0% but still supply power? And for the switch flipping on to put the smart bulb at the desired brightness depending on the time of day? And is this possible in a four way circuit like this? I'm aware of something like the Shelly that can make a circuit "smart" but not sure it would be applicable here. Note that I do have a neutral wire so that is available to me. Wow, lots of flipping off talk here… [link] [comments]
Can the xiaomi/yeelight SLISAON switches send more than one command? Posted: 20 May 2021 10:29 PM PDT So far the those seem to be one of the few SLISAON switches (meaning tapping the switch doesn't turn off power to the bulb, but just turns it off, while still controllable by app voice) which is great in itself. But i was wondering if they support double, trippe taps or hold, to do more than just on off, like dimming, changing color, scenes? Anyone tried them and having first hand experience? Making 'dumb' lights smart instead of buying smart lights? Posted: 20 May 2021 08:23 PM PDT Hey guys I am moving into my new home next month and super keen to start all this house automation stuff. I am a robotic engineer, so this is right down my alley, just needed a house that I wasnt renting! Just had a quick question about this product "LIFX Black Gloss Wifi Voice Activates Smart Switch". It claims to go in place of a light switch, through standard connections and make your lights 'smart'. Would this be a cheaper option (short term and long term) than having smart lights? What is the main difference, as far as I can tell, it integrates the same and you can do everything a smart light can do (except colors). Thanks in advanced. [link] [comments]
LED Strip Lighting 24v Distance Limits? Posted: 20 May 2021 09:43 AM PDT Howdy! I'm looking to install LED strip lighting along the eave of my back yard shed, and the spousal unit would like it to be 'colour', and not just white, so looking at RGBW strip lighting, and trying to find good info on what I need to ensure it works. It's going to be approximately 90 feet between the power supply and the strip lights themselves, and looking to do ~15ft of lighting total. Is 90' anything to be concerned about? I'm assuming 24v is the way to go as well. Any product suggestions are welcome (along with suggestions for other subreddits to ask these questions)! Thanks, David [link] [comments]
DIY (or not) motion sensing, auto-opening indoor pet gate Posted: 20 May 2021 07:00 PM PDT Hey folks, I've been trying to wrap my head around DIY components needed to rig a pet gate to open automatically when I pass by a certain point in the adjacent hallway. I've gotten as far as determining that an Adafruit PIR sensor and a raspberry pi with a bread board will work, but beyond that, I cant find an appropriate actuator (maybe I need a servomotor?) that would swing the gate open - a spring loaded auto-closing gate remedies the need to close the gate. If anyone has suggestions for how to proceed, advice on alternative smart products that could do the trick, or links to DIY guides for something that could be repurposed for what I'm doing, it would be greatly appreciated! I've never touched a raspberry pi before, but the reading I've done hasn't completely mystified me or gone over my head so I'm confident I can work with it to do what I need if I can find the correct components, and smart home automation is pretty easy with products that perform the right tasks if that's the route this takes. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Which is better: should i get xiaomi philips eyecare desk lamp or xiaomi bedside lamp 2? Sonos One as Group Alexa device and Speaker Posted: 20 May 2021 02:40 PM PDT I have a Sonos one and have made it my Alexa device for the Kitchen. However, when I go to select my speaker for the kitchen group, the Sonos device is not an option. Basically I can't play music right now when I ask Alexa to play music in the kitchen. Am I missing something obvious? [link] [comments]
Looking for a simple, compact, battery operated button that I can integrate with Home Assistant. Posted: 20 May 2021 01:26 PM PDT Hi all, I recently took the dive into Home Assistant and will never look back. Now that my smart home eyes has been opened, I've been racking my brain for other ways I can use it. One thing in particular that I've always wanted to do is start logging random information (based on a button click). For example, I have been feeling pretty stressed at work lately and I'd love to have a simple button by my desk that I can push once a day whenever I'm feelings stressed. Home Assistant would then log that it was pressed and I could track the number of days per month that I am feeling stressed while looking for specific outliers that may contribute to that stress (ie days my boss is in the office). Can someone point me in the right direction for a button like this? I originally thought about the Amazon Dash buttons but I can't seem to find those. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 May 2021 12:52 PM PDT I've got a space that's about 25' x 12' where 95% of foot traffic passes through. The space includes the kitchen and can be entered from different points so I have three ways and four ways in the layout plans to account for various scenarios. I'm wondering if it's possible to have a lighting scheme that can be definitively turned on or off like a conventional switch, but in the middle of the night could be triggered to come on at something like 15% power so you're neither stumbling in the dark nor blinded by full power. I guess the alternative would be to string another set of lights that are only triggered in the dark with motion, for example at the bottom of kitchen base cabinets and/or above the wall cabinets. Any advice greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 May 2021 12:50 PM PDT I've noticed it's difficult to track food and expiration dates inside the kitchen for a broad majority of people. I've been thinking of a way to help people do this easier, although our current merchant system would need to be modified or redeveloped. UPC code being updated to include expiration date or a modified qr code on each product to be printed with the information of what product it is and it's recommended expiration. Have it all uploaded to an app at checkout or manually scan each product at home before putting it away on the shelf. This could help people make better informed decisions when doing additional shopping at grocery stores (by automatically categorizing currently stored food in a list of available foods in the kitchen, possibly setting reminders of reoccurring purchases for products as well), track all food inside the kitchen, provide great food user data and get a demographic sense of nutrition. I thought about this when I opened my parents shelf of 40 tuna cans and realizing how much of a head ache it would be to manually enter all these products into a log, I was further inspired by this idea when I went to my girlfriends grandmother's home and found that half of her condiments had expired for several years spiking my curiousity about how many people unknowingly eat contaminated/expired food when it could be subtle as ketchup or canned soups. Whenever the app sees there is something expired in the kitchen, it would inform the user of the product and allow them to click a button to signify they threw the item away. With instructions whether the packaging is recyclable or not. Some of the ideas for this app might be far fetched, but I am a huge advocate for preventable food wastage and preventable food poisoning within the home. There is no way I could try to implement this on my own. Let me know what you think of this idea! [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 May 2021 11:49 AM PDT I am able to call my phone using the ATD+ AT command and end it using ATH. How would I know if it was answered or ended in the other side of the call? I'm going to send an SMS if it were to be answered. I'm using SIM900 btw. [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 May 2021 06:43 AM PDT Hi all We have had a Nest Thermostat 3d generation for almost two years and it was working fine. It stopped working today and I figured out the heat link most likely has died. I understand that I might need a new bundle but was wondering what the alternatives are to Nest? The main thing for me that Nest is missing is to have another thermostat acting as a repeater. We have an Airbnb as a separate part of the house but it is sharing heating with the main house. I want guests to be able to turn the heating on and off. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 May 2021 06:35 AM PDT So I recently started using Home bridge to bring my SmartThings devices into the home app on ios, since doing so I get a random notification saying the front door is unlocked when no one has activated it. When I then check the lock manually it isn't unlocked… very confused and not really getting any useful information from the ST logs. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 May 2021 06:27 AM PDT I have a vault in my house (a secret play-room you could say) that needs communication between the inside and outside. It needs only 2 stations and must be wired (not wireless) due to the faraday cage esque room. The only solutions I found are full home 5-station + 1 master that are in the thousands, and buying a master and sub-station separately costs in the $700. I only need 2 stations and it seems these solutions are overkill. The intercom must also have full duplex (I think that's what it's called), where you can talk and listen at the same time. Do you guys have any cheaper alternatives than these full home systems? tl;dr: 2-station intercom preferably less than $250 that allows talk and listen at the same time. [link] [comments] |
