comparison of various opensource home automation tools Posted: 14 Jun 2020 11:59 PM PDT looking for an opensource programmable home automation system, with a good interface to various hardware sensors. I found the following ones
Seems like home-assistant is the most popular, probably because of using python as the scripting language. I am looking for a system that will scale well beyond just 1 home. I have currently 47 other properties that I want to apply this to, with a multitude of sensors. Further, I want to build on top of the collected data and run automated analytics. Since the data will be very sensitive (will contain data of my various tenants), what I am looking for is good security, scalability, and analytics capabilities. Looking for a good programmatic interface, but the UI is not a very high priority. Because of the scope of this project, I will probably start with just a unit but will want to scale it up and at a certain point start using AWS to manage storage and compute the accumulated data. I am leaning towards Home-assistant (mainly because of the 33k github stars and good reviews, large user base, and support), but noticed domoticz is written in C++, which probably makes it more robust and scalable. Has anybody scaled up any of these systems to multiple homes? [link] [comments]

Has anyone successfully programmed a Harmony Hub w/ Hunter Fan? Posted: 14 Jun 2020 05:54 PM PDT So I have the following Hunter Fan: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076HX8THZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 If I go to add it as a device in My Harmony, the remote commands do not get recognized by the hub. So I can't move to the next screen. I tried various positions, etc, no luck. Do these Hunter Fans use proprietary signals? I just brought a Bond device, but before trying it, i wanted to see if Harmony can do the trick. https://www.homedepot.com/pep/Bond-Smart-Wi-Fi-Ceiling-Fan-Remote-Hub-BD-1000/302904473?mtc=Shopping-BA-F_Bold-G-D27L-27_20_CEILING_FANS-Multi-NA-Feed-PLA-NA-NA-BOLD&cm_mmc=Shopping-BA-F_Bold-G-D27L-27_20_CEILING_FANS-Multi-NA-Feed-PLA-NA-NA-BOLD-71700000066452220-58700005836823386-92700053380753897&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxtbn5s2C6gIVB26GCh3_awB9EAQYASABEgK9B_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds [link] [comments]

Tasmota serial buffer overrun? Posted: 14 Jun 2020 06:42 PM PDT I recently bought a Monoprice IR Bridge and flashed Tasmota on it. It worked great for the first few days (and it still does), I can send it commands via MQTT to turn my fan on. I problem that I've been having for the past week is that the LED on the IR Bridge is flashing constantly and the Tasmota console is being spammed with the message Does anyone know why/how the buffer is being overrun? I've cranked up the console log level to 4 and the above is what I get, so nothing too useful. This doesn't impact the operation of the device, I can still use it to send remote commands, but the LED is blinking constantly and the console is being continuously written to. Can something like a Shelly be stuffed in a (U.S.) receptacle box? Posted: 14 Jun 2020 12:28 PM PDT Basically the title. I'm looking to have control over an outlet for a wall mounted tablet application. Just wondering if a Shelly would work or if it's only for light switches. Would love to hear if other people have done this too. Thanks so much! [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2020 08:55 AM PDT Just finished this adventure, running into a lot of obstacles, false starts, and confusing info in the process, and wanted to write down the steps in case anybody else in the future wanted to try something similar. When I was googling to find out how to do this, I found the information sparse, so hoping to help address that problem. :) ~~~ Like most of you on this subreddit, I want to voice control things. Name, my blinds so I never have to go manually adjust a blind ever again. How Expensive? and Which Brand? I also didn't want to spend a bajillion dollars doing so. I got several quotes from full service companies offering Hunter Douglas, Somfy, Graber, you name it. Quotes were eye poppingly expensive - Cheapest quote I got was roughly $9,000; most expensive was $16,000 for 16 windows through the house. Even some internet retailers like ZebraBlinds were going to be roughly $800 to $1000 a window, so I was still looking at roughly $14,000 That was almost enough for me to give up on the project entirely because holy shit, that's the price of a used car. Butttt, Costco offers blinds via https://member.baliblinds.com/ . They are Bali blinds, which as far as I can tell are just the generic version of Graber - They're made by the same company and if you look closely enough, you can tell that certain fabrics are the same, but just with different names. If you wait for a 10% or 15% off sale, and factor in the 4% cashback you get by buying through Costco, it ends up well worth it. I paid roughly $5,700. ZWave or Infrared? So, now that I picked blinds, I had to pick how to get google assistant/google home to interact with them. There seem to be two options, one via Infrared (IR) and one via ZWave. With an IR one, you have to set up repeaters and your windows have to in line of sight, so I chose to go with ZWave. Just made a lot more sense to me. Well, Google Home doesn't natively support ZWave, right? So you have to run through some sort of Hub. I chose Samsung SmartThings. Okay, but how? So, here's the meat of it. You've bought your blinds, you've set them up, and you've bought a Samsung SmartThings Hub. Plus, you obviously have Google Home. Here are the mechanical steps from here: 1) You'll need to factory reset each of your shades by pressing and holding the one button on the shade for 7 seconds until it blinks orange. 2) Set up the SmartThings Hub, and then add each of the shades as a device by pressing and holding the one button on the shade for 3 seconds until it blinks green. You will know it worked because the shade's button will stop blinking green and flash solid green for 1 second. Two MAJOR recommendations at this point:
3) Pair Samsung SmartThings with Google home. Google changes their app all the time, but as of right now, it is available as a "works with google home" option. So go to the Google Home App -> Settings -> Works with Google , and then sign in to your Samsung SmartThings. What Voice Commands do I use? So this is the result of a lot of Trial and error on my part.
But voila! Now you can voice control your blinds! :) Other Considerations: Yes, you can adjust your open/close presets Wasn't sure where to put this so I'm putting it as an addendum at the bottom. The website says to measure your windows to within 1/8 of an inch. This is actually critically important for you window width (don't fuck this up, it sucks), but you can definitely just get "close enough" for your window height. This is because you can always adjust your window height "open" and "close" positions by using the remote you have to buy. Costco/Bali makes you buy at least one remote - I'd recommend buying the "multi channel" remote of the three options. But I would NOT recommend buying spare remotes like I did. They're fucking expensive and the whole point of this was to voice control your stuff, right? Once again - you can adjust your window height "open" and "close" positions. When I got my blinds originally, they were all roughly .75 inches to 1.5 inches too long (random lengths on each), and I was like "Wtf? Why did you make me measure to an eighth of an inch if you were going to make them too long?" And when I called, multiple frontline customer service people just told me to buy my blinds again, but roughly 1 inch shorter, and just return the original order. O.o Seemed like a complete waste, and I almost did it - until I hit up one of their CS reps in their motorization division for a different problem, who told me how to adjust the preset open/close positions. Here's how:
~~~ Holy crap - that was a lot of text. Hopefully this helps someone else who is curious about doing this, but unsure as to how. I hope this helps you avoid falling into any of the pitholes that I did along the way. Any questions, I'll do my best to answer below. :) [link] [comments]
Motion sensor for old Wemo smart plugs Posted: 14 Jun 2020 12:28 PM PDT Can anyone recommend a motion sensor / motion detector that will integrate with my extensive set of devices on old Wemo smart plugs? I was happy with the old "Wemo motion" but they stopped selling it and wanted me to buy a camera instead. [link] [comments]
Help! Simple dimmer switch for use with Alexa Posted: 14 Jun 2020 03:35 PM PDT Sorry I am a bit frustrated and ranty at the moment. So many choices! After an hour of research I gave up and was just about to buy a WeMo switch because they are well-reviewed but a June 2020 Amazon review says WeMo recently broke their Alexa integration, which is what I want to do. I'm literally drowning in choices. Could someone please tell me what is a good, simple dimmer switch for use with Alexa? I want something with tight, reliable integration with Alexa. That is really my only requirement. I'm open to Z-Wave or Zigbee but again there are so many choices I don't know what I should get. I don't really care about much beyond good Alexa integration. Whatever will get me working reliably with Alexa without a lot of hassle and in-fighting between Amazon and the switch manufacturer would be good. Another plus would be no Engrish. I'm not super interested in a manufacturer that can't be bothered to translate well. I don't care where stuff is made but it's a red flag to me if the English manuals are shoddy. If they can't spend a few bucks on a technical writer, I'm not about to trust them as a reliable maker of electronics. [link] [comments]
Can I control my Yeelight Light bulbs with my PC? Posted: 14 Jun 2020 10:01 AM PDT I have two Yeelight light bulbs, both connected to my google home, in my room. Since I recently got a streaming deck, I thought it might be possible to control these bulbs with it. So: Is there a way to bind the on/off toggle command for the lights to a certain keyboard key on your pc? Much Thanks! [link] [comments]
ISP changed without me knowing/asking?? Posted: 14 Jun 2020 11:28 AM PDT I don't really know the most appropriate sub to post this in, so my apologies. I have Xfinity Gigabit with an XFi Gateway as my cable modem (in Bridge mode to my eero). Yesterday, as I left home, I saw a Wave Broadband truck next door. I assume the neighbor was getting service from Wave. When I got home a while later, my Internet access was hosed. To keep it brief, now when I run a speed test on Fast.com, it says my ISP is Wave. How is this possible? Did the installer mess something up next door changing my ISP somehow? Xfinity tech scheduling is impossible right now (they'll call me when they can schedule), so trying to figure out what could have happened. Haven't actually gone to the basement yet to investigate if anything obvious happened there, but the Wave tech was never in there, so couldn't really have changed there... [link] [comments]
App to control mytouchsmart and other devices Posted: 14 Jun 2020 09:42 AM PDT I currently only have myTouchSmart but I want to buy products from the competition (such as TP-Link). I know that myTouchSmart has their own app where I can control the lights, outlets etc. Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to do all these things (schedule, power on, power off etc. but allow me to manage multiple vendors? I don't want to be locked in to one vendor or need multiple apps for the various vendors I plan on using. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2020 09:31 AM PDT I'm having trouble deciding between August, Wyze, and the Kwikset Convert Smartlock. Which should I get and why? I am also using the Ring 5 piece system (I'm aware that two of these smartlocks don't work with ring and that's fine, more concerned about quality of the smartlocks). [link] [comments]
Outdoor rated plugs that aren't mini-extension cords/dongles? Posted: 14 Jun 2020 09:00 AM PDT Looking for an outdoor/waterproof outdoor outlet/plug but would prefer something that isn't a "dongle". Not sure if they are made because of the GFCI requirement for outdoor outlets. Has anyone had any success using an indoor one outside? Has it held up? I have some patio lights I would like to turn on and off. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2020 04:53 AM PDT What is the best smart thermostat available in the UK? What do you have? What do you like/dislike? I am moving house so have an opportunity to change away from my Nest. We have been underwhelmed by it, resorting to just setting a schedule manually and having to manually check if it's detected our home/away status. As I understand the other headline ones in the UK are Tado and Hive. Are there other options? What is recommended? It's likely I will need both hot water and heating control (I doubt we will have a combi boiler like we do now). Cheers! [link] [comments]
LG Washer/Dryer with ThinQ leave on permanently? Posted: 14 Jun 2020 06:26 AM PDT I got an LG Washer/Dryer set that connects via LG's ThinQ app and connects to Google Home. Works great and all, but one hang up is we can't remotely turn them on unless they've been turned on at the device itself. This seems pretty stupid but I haven't found any way around it or a way to leave the "smarts" of the appliance on permanently. Main reason being the ol' fluff and re-fluff clothes in the dryer game. Does anyone know of some buried setting I may be missing to allow this? Also in general I'm just curious if anyone has done any hacking on these before. [link] [comments]
