Nexia: A Stunning Piece of Shit

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 03:38 PM PDT

I recently had a Trane thermostat (XL1050) installed to run a variable speed AC. The $450 thermostat is a Nexia z-wave home automation hub. As someone who has used many HA hubs, and as a software developer, what I can say is that Nexia is an enormous pile of shit. Buy something other than Trane/American Standard and avoid being forced into using an a product designed by idiots.

    Cheap thermostat

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 04:06 PM PDT

Hi there, I'm looking for a cheap thermostat to monitor a reptile enclosures temperature and humidity, hopefully with data tracking over time. I would also like it to have IFTTT integration to automatically turn on a fan etc. Any recommendations?

Need to buy new garage door system, is MyQ marketing junk or is it actually good?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 09:34 PM PDT

I am replacing my garage door and have to update the opener motor. Home Depot only seems to have the MyQ stuff and if I want the best HP motor it comes with MyQ. Is it any good, or should I shop around? I don't really have much home automation yet but have some devices I plan to interconnect with home assistant soon, like HEOS speakers, harmony remote, EyezON board on my alarm system, and we are locked into the iOS ecosystem with our phones.

I'd like to avoid cloud based stuff also.

    Help request with automation setup

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 08:58 PM PDT

Newbie to automation here, so please be kind. I'm trying to set up this scenerio: if a smart switch is turned on (physically or by my or my wife's phone) AND any Wyze contact sensor turns to open, then turn on another smart switch (which has a light or siren plugged in). I have most things working thru IFTTT and Sequematic, but struggling on how to make the "if switch is on" trigger work.

How do you use your door sensors?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 09:04 AM PDT

I don't have any yet because I don't know how I'd use them. I'd like to know how you use yours, so maybe I'll be inspired to buy some.

    E Paper Displays

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 09:40 AM PDT

    Hey folks,

I have really been digging all the e-paper projects I've been seeing lately. However, I am kind of lazy/busy at the moment and not sure I want to undertake a whole project lol. I've been looking, and am surprised that there doesn't seem to be pre-programmed or easy to program units available.

    For example:

I would love to have an e-paper that displays the front page of a newspaper, or the weather, calendar, commute, etc. and I know this can be done with API's and Rasperry Pi's and what not. Is there no one that is selling a pre-built unit that I could buy and use an app to easily choose what newspaper I want to display, or the area I want weather for, or do I need to have some tech DIY skills?

Sorry if this is a dumb question!

    shelly 2.5 wont add device

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 07:56 PM PDT

I got a new shelly 2.5. I wired it up to what I think are two switches. Its a bit tricky, but needles to say, I have 4 wires, 2 are hot and 2 are not and when I pair them with wire nuts, lights turn on. So I connected each hot to the two Line ins on the shelly and connect the other wires to the out1 and out2. There was a neutral in the box from somewhere else, so I connect that to shelly's neutral. This caused the breaker to go off. So now the tricky wiring comes is suspect. However, I don't want to deal with that just yet.

Instead, I disconnect one of the two "switches", the one I think is trickier. So Shelly just has 1 line in, 1 out and 1 neutral. No breakers go off so I assume I am good wiring wise. Next I launch the shelly android app and I try to add the new shelly 2.5 device. I can see the device has a wifi AP, so I know it's there. I go to a room i nthe app, add device and then search. It find's the device and I tell it to add to my wifi network. It asks me to select device. It only showed 1 device. Does shelly 2.5 usually show 1 or 2 devices? I thought it was two. But anyhow, I click "include" device and it says it can't find any devices. Even though it's showing me the device and I have it selected. I try several times. I end up resetting the shelly several times, by connecting a switch and switching it 5 times within a minute. It makes a grinding? sound, so I think the reset works.

Anyhow, all that to ask three questions.

    1. Did I break the shelly by connecting two different hot lines? Or can I assume I didn't sense it shows up on the app and I can even connect to it on wifi?
      1. How do I connect two hot lines that each has a circuit breaker? This maybe perfectly fine to do, I dont know. The wierd part is that I start with both breakers off and then I would turn 1 breaker on at a time. Would that bother shelly?
    2. Assuming, I didn't break it, how can I add this device to the app? Am I missing a step? I've done 1 other shelly 2.5 and it works.
      1. IF the answer is to try another shelly 2.5, can you tell me how to correctly wire it just to connect to the app without having it drive an output/switch? I assume, a neutral from a different circuit is fine? Can shelly run with just 1 line in? OR should I take the 1 hot and branch it to both line ins? Does the out1/out2 need to be connected at all? I assume, SW1/SW2 does not need to be connect, so correct me if I am wrong.
    3. I have cloud turned off on the app. Does that affect registering new devices?

Harmony Elite - Smart Device Integration w/ Sequences for HT Light Control

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 03:41 PM PDT

I've been looking around for a way to add home control devices directly in a custom sequence. I've found no way to accomplish this within the Harmony software itself. I figure I'd see if reddit can assist!

Has anyone been able to find a 3rd party solution or possibly a custom code/script that allows adding smart devices to a sequence? There are many posts around the internet about this, but most end up without a solution or having to use your voice assistant to control the lights. This is not ideal.

I'm on a mission with my friend to find a solution to this issue. The goal is to find a universal option that can be used primarily on the harmony, but any other universal remote as well. Has anyone found a custom source code or a way to map the home control/smart home devices to a button via a sequence?

Full details can be found here with a full description of what is being requested:

    https://youtu.be/j0FM-XOanng

Please let me know if you have found a way to do this. I've seen that some people create an activity for this as a workaround, but this is not ideal.

    Thanks!

    Pairing a Tessan smart switch

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 07:18 PM PDT

Hi! We have a Tessan smart switch. Somehow I managed to pair it to the Smart Life app on partner's phone last year. It's been working working great. However, we've moved in together and we're going to use a family Amazon account so I want to move the device over to my phone and connect it with my Amazon account.

I figured out how to put the switch in pairing mode by holding the power button. I can see that the light is flashing. However when I go into the Smart Life app on my Pixel 2 and go through the connection wizard it takes me to wifi settings to connect to the switch's AP. But I can't find the AP for the switch. It never shows up. Any tips?

I have a Netgear Orbi network, which is currently working fine with the switch. I think it does 2.4 and 5 GHz on the same SSID. Any tips?

    This is the switch: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K67D43J

What are y’all using for home theater/music around the house?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 02:42 PM PDT

I'm dipping my toes into the waters of home automation with some basic lighting and temperature routines, but I'd like to integrate speakers throughout our house and out by the pool. I have Alexas around the house and I'm not sure if that's the easiest solution, but I'd prefer something that I could have a speaker in several rooms, ability to play TV audio through the speakers I select, and the easier it can integrate with my phone for music/Spotify, the better.

Just curious what solutions others have found that integrate well with your setups. Thanks for any suggestions!

Can I use smart plug to turn on and off a PC?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 02:02 PM PDT

My understand of these smart plugs is that they essentially "kill" and "unkill" the power. PC's have a button to turn them on so even if the PC is plugged into the wall, it still won't turn on, unless the button is pressed.

Could I use a smart plug for turn on and off my PC or would that not work since u still need to press the PC's on button to turn it on?

    Smart Light Switch help.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 11:48 AM PDT

I recently bought a Shelly One to put in my wall for a light switch, so i can use the physical switch and home assistant. The only issue is my socket for the light switch is way too small to fit the switch and the Shelly. Any ideas where I can use a shelly or another device to control the physical switch and use home assistant. I was looking and smart light switches but they are way too expensive.

At the moment I am using smart light bulbs. The only issue is I cant turn off my light via light switch and turn them on using home assistant.

    Any ideas?

    Controllable color LED fixture suggestions?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 05:40 PM PDT

Any recommendations for controllable (via home assistant) color LED fixtures? Looking to mount it above my sink. https://imgur.com/a/U9VSsPi

In an apartment so preferably not permanent mount, but I can do some minor drilling if necessary. Was looking at something like the adafruit led rings, but Id like something less complicated than tinkering with Arduino etc (have led strip above the cabinets running similarly). I have power and an access channel from above the cabinets.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Repeat wirelessly HDMI without input lag?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 05:10 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

I'm not sure I'm in the good place for this but r/homeautomation is one of my favourites / so I'm going to try my luck here.

Making the setup of my gaming room, I did something really cool in 270 degrees, and something not so great in the last 90 degrees... The problem, is that I'm going to Twitch for a friend's channel, and would like to have a nice background while playing, but the matter is, that my tv is in front of the ugly part...

In this ugly part there's a table with my computer, so I thought it could be a way to repeat my TV's signal on my 2nd screen (wirelessly) and in 4k (if it has to be rescaled in 720/1080p it doesn't matter to me) but I'd like to have the native video in 4K.
I can see a lot of solutions on internet, but the thing is that I'm going to play videogames, so I can't have a too huge input lag... There are 5 meters between the first and the second screen.

What do you recommend me to use ? Thanks in advance!

Venstar ColorTouch Thermostat and Emulating a Remote Sensor

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 12:38 PM PDT

The Venstar ColorTouch thermostats have a local API, which is ideal in my mind for utilizing for automation since it doesn't rely on the cloud. The thing that stands out to me is that they have remote sensors that can be used and those sensors communicate over Wi-Fi. So it got me thinking.... could you emulate one of those sensors with network based calls to the thermostat by pretending to be a remote sensor and basically set the current temperature on the thermostat via the automation system.

I already have temperature sensors around the house and the Venstar sensors are ugly to be honest. What I'd like to do is to emulate one sensor in my automation system and provide the thermostat with a calculated average of what the temperature is on the house for it to use while running it's schedule. The thermostat would then be set to use only the reading on the remote sensor.

I'd also want to know if it has some sort of timeout (ex: sensor hasn't reported in 15 mins, revert back to the temp sensor on the thermostat itself in case the "battery" died).

Maybe someone has a Venstar with a remote sensor and would be willing to get a wire shark capture?

Thanks for any thoughts or information.

Hue outdoor LED strip cut and extend

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 03:04 PM PDT

Hi so Hue 5m outdoor lights are 24v and I am wondering if I can cut the 6 wires between the control box and the controller and extend them.

If so what gauge / mm 6 core wire do I need and how long can I run them - 10m?

I want to ceiling mount them and the controller box is way too thick to hide.

    Thanks

    Indoor plant watering systems

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 08:46 AM PDT

Are there any recommendations out there for automatic plant watering systems?

I've seen a few available from amazon, but with mostly low reviews.

I'm considering building one with an arduino and some solenoid valves connected to the main water supply. If anyone has experience with a better off the shelf system I think I would prefer that to rolling my own.
