Using Phillips hue lights strips outdoors

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 10:16 PM PDT

Can it be done? I plan to use it under a balcony, about 3 ft away from an uncovered edge. Outlet is gfci, and the strip would be around a window. I haven't seen if the strip is covered in a gel like other LED strips, or if it's wide open exposed.

Anyone have some that can tell me how they come?

    Thanks!

Smart Solar Floodlights that work with Nest/Google Home?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 07:15 PM PDT

Basically title. We have Nest everything and have Philips Hue lights for indoor and also 2 of their outdoor screw-in floodlights, but it doesn't quite get the whole backyard. Any good solar-powered smart floodlights that I can attach to the garage (no outlet access) and control with Google Assistant voice commands/Routines?

    Thanks!

    Smart Switch + LED

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT

    Hey all!

So I'm redoing a covered porch in my house, as part of this I want to mount a wireless (battery powered) light switch on the wall near the door where there is no light switch at all

However, I don't just want the switch to be wireless, I would like it to have different possible presets.

What I mean by this is I plan to put various LED strips as well as LED lights in the room and I'd very much like it if I could have 2-3 preprogrammed "scenes" so I can just hit one of the squares on the light switch and it can change the bulbs/lights to various settings (for instance blue underbar striplight, red bulbs, purple around ceiling strip lights)

Also any recommendation on good bulbs/lights would appreciated !

I have kids that are just tall enough and smart enough to open the deadbolt from within. Does anyone have any clever solutions to child proof the indoor deadbolt?

Can I control my ceiling fans from my phone/home assistant?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 11:29 AM PDT

They currently utilize one of these to control 2 fans in my backyard, but I would really prefer to control them either solely from or in addition to from my phone or home assistant. Is this possible? What do I need?

Are there any Homekit/Google Home compatible cameras that can do continuous video recording and don't require a subscription?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 11:11 AM PDT

It seems like the combination of above features isn't available in all the options I've researched.

Edit: Just to clarify I'm looking for a system that supports BOTH Apple Homekit and Google Home.

Is it safe to use my LED 9.5 watt bulbs in my lamp that says it has a maximum of 40 watts for a bulb or 9 watts for a self-ballasted LED bulb?

    Smart Water Hose Faucet?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 04:27 PM PDT

I have a swamp cooler that requires someone to go outside and turn on the water from a hose faucet in order for it to function. I'd like to know if any of y'all know of a smart device that works with Google Assistant to automate the process. I tried the Orbit B-hyve Smart Hose Faucet, but it does not stay on indefinitely; it has a maximum operation time of 4 hours after which the water needs to be turned back on.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Savant vs control4?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 12:06 PM PDT

Hi I'm purchasing a new home and one thing I'd like to accomplish in this house is some level of condensing the amount of apps I have controlling everything.

I have garage door, locks, pool, water features, shades, hvac, Sonos etc and everything is on its own app.

I'm wondering out of savant and control4 which is better? Or I'd be willing to hear any other suggestions.

I'd like something with a clean interface that doesn't take much fiddling from me once it's dialed in

    Thanks

Home Assistant Generic Thermostat Equivalent for Homebridge?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 11:38 AM PDT

Does anyone know a Homebridge equivalent of the Home Assistant Generic Thermostat?

    https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/generic_thermostat/

It takes a switch and a sensor and presents it like a regular thermostat climate control.

    Automating/Connecting motorized sit-stand desk

    Automating/Connecting motorized sit-stand desk

I've got a motorized desk frame from the company Exeta (as far as I know a German company, they also have the name "Yayago" written on their site).

I want to connect this to my smarthome and automate it (e.g. stand up/sit down every 30 minutes).

The motor control box has the following connectors:

    https://preview.redd.it/dg8scx2kuh451.jpg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2581714ced32033bd20b786b3861f6999684d71

M1 and M2 are the connectors for the motor, P2 ist a RJ45 Port connected to the touch controller with memory function. P1 is an unused RJ12 port, hopefully to also control the desk.

    the touch controller

label on the motor control box

Ideally I could just connect a raspberry pi zero or arduino (perferably ESP8266) to the unused P1 port and use it parallel to the existing controller panel to adjust the desk.

Unfortunately I have no idea, where to even start with this. I searched the internet up and down for specifications on this port but could not find anything. Is reverse engineering something like this possible? Du you guys have any experience with similar controllers?

Pre-configure wifi on a device for a senior?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 08:28 AM PDT

I'd like to send some devices to someone living in an elderly care home, but I won't be able to set up the wifi on the devices in person. I'm wondering if I can change my router to the same SSID user/pass as theirs, get the device working, and then send it to them?

    Looking to automate a faucet

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 08:12 AM PDT

I have a standard outdoor faucet that is then piped underground to an outdoor bathroom and another hose at the end of my property. More often than not, someone leaves the water on in the bathroom or doesn't shut the hose off completely or does who knows what to make the toilet run constantly. I would like to find something that I can connect to the faucet that will shut it off after a pre-determined period of time. Ideally, if it detects water flow for more than 5 minutes, it would shut off too, but that is optional. Most of the automated valves are geared towards irrigation. I would like to have it either integrated into Hubitat or at least have an app that I can monitor and manually toggle it on/off. Ideas?

Additional power to chained LED lights?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 07:29 AM PDT

I have chained (linked) up three 16.4 foot Govee Home Brighter 5050 LED strips. The supplied power supply doesn't get enough power to the third strip so the brightness and colors are off due to line loss. I learned somewhere you can add additional power or move the power to the middle. I not sure how common or easy this is, but I haven't been able to find reliable information on how. Can anyone share your technique?
