    Stair way sensor but what to trigger? I need your suggestions.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 04:12 PM PDT

    Hey all,

    I want to use a Aeotec MultiSensor as a motion sensor on a porch stairwell, but I want to have an alert of sorts inside and an alert outside on the porch so we can be alerted if someone comes up the stairs.

    I think I'm looking for a small not super loud chime or sounder of some sort. I would much prefer all battery or rechargeable.

    Thanks in advance.

    I learned my lesson: better monitor your monitoring system ;)

    I learned my lesson: better monitor your monitoring system ;)

    I have been running OpenHab on a Raspberry Pi without a problem for a couple of years now. I am sure many here run a similar setup (maybe just another software).

    One day a couple of weeks ago I randomly checked the logs and saw something failing. I am really glad I did because it turns out a problem with one of the bindings resulted in nearly 100% CPU usage which caused the Pi (3, no fan needed normally) to heat up considerably. Luckily I was able to just restart it and update to the newest version of OpenHab and the binding to fix it.

    To make sure this does not happen again I created a monitoring system using OpenHab and Grafana to see all the important data about the Pi on first glance. If I feel like I need it I can also add emergency messaging to my phone. Here is how I did it.

    Kind of ironic that the system I build to monitor stuff in my home nearly died because I did not monitor it good enough ;)

    Cat-activated waterbowl

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:00 PM PDT

    This is going to be a weird post.

    My cat tends to drink all possible types of water except for the one in his bowl: that we deliberately put out there and refresh daily. He drinks it out of my glass, comes with me in the shower to drink water, and wants to go on the balcony when it's raining to drink the rain.

    Now we've got this small, electric waterfountain. It's designed for cats. You plug it in, it runs, and they think it's fresh water (that's probably why my cat does not like its bowl).

    That's part A. I have a moderately automated home - nothing too fancy. I've got the IKEA Hub, some switches, smart plugs and lights. Mostly use the 'turn off all' setting.

    I want to put the fountain in a smart plug. Then, I want to use a microphone as a 'switch'. Every time the microphone picks up my cats 'meow', I want the fountain to turn on for 20 seconds

    To determine whether the cat has meowed or not, I want to use Machine Learning. I have two academic degrees in Artificial Intelligence so, funnily enough, this is the easy part. I have already recorded my cats meows as a trainset.

    What I do not yet know is the following: what is the easiest way to implement this? Which microphone can I use in my current setup? I would like some tips: especially hardware-wise. Where does it send the audio? How do I 'present' it to my trained network, and how do I get back the boolean that decides whether it was classified as a meow?

    Thanks a lot.

    Low Voltage Smart Lighting

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT

    So, I currently have a combination of smart bulbs and smart switches throughout my home. I have a Smartthings setup and multiple Echo devices for voice activation.

    I am now constructing a built in desk area and I want to have several floating shelves with lighting built in. In the bottom shelf I would like to put in three spot lights as well as color-changing strip lighting. On each of the other two shelves I only want color-changing strip lighting.

    Ideally, I'd like a solution for all the desk area lighting that responds to voice activation. I'd also like to be able to control on/off functionality with two physical switches (one for spot lighting and one for light strips).

    I am comfortable doing my own electrical work, whether low voltage or romex. Ideally, I'd like these all to be low voltage, but I'm not clear what products are out there that might support this.

    Any guidance or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Is converting existing Roman shades a possibility?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 04:21 PM PDT

    I know there are plenty of ways to convert blinds with strings however I have yet to see anything for Roman shades that don't have any visible strings.

    Short of buying specific smart home shades are there any ways to accomplish this?

    Solution ideas for bathroom ventilator

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 01:08 AM PDT

    Hi everyone

    I have a bit of a situation. I have installed a pretty substantial fan in our windowless bathroom. The room is prewired for that and has a wall switch controlling the thing. So far so good.

    Since I have access to the ventilation pipe, I thought it would look better to remove the fan from the bathroom and put it in line with the pipe in the attic. The issue is wiring up there seems to be a bit of a hassle to me.

    I'm looking for a solution that reuses the wall switch so manual activation is possible. I would also like a humidity sensor and the thing should run for another few minutes after power is cut. That last thing can be solved electrically, so it isn't much of an issue.

    I do not need to access this from around the world, so internet connectivity is not needed.

    The current working idea is to connect the switch and fan to wifi and control the thing like that.

    I know there are solutions out there for this but I am unwilling to pay a hundred or more to get this done. So my question is:

    tl;dr; Is there a cheap way to attach a fan and existing switch to wifi?

    2 Gang Lutron Caseta Wiring Challenge

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 07:03 PM PDT

    2 Gang Lutron Caseta Wiring Challenge

    I have a 2 gang box with two switches. One switch goes to kitchen, the other to the dining area light. These are not 3-way switches.

    I bought Lutron Caseta Wireless dimmers for each. These switches have 2 black wires and one ground each.

    My wiring for these lights is not as straightforward as I'd expected. I have two Romex coming up. One has red, black, white, and bare. The other has black, white, and bare. And the two existing switches are wired together.

    How do I wire the Lutrons properly with this?

    Thanks for your help, guys.

    RS232 control for Logitech Harmony

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 12:21 AM PDT

    HI Guys,

    I am looking to replace control4 and sticking point is my HDBaseT TV distribution system. I have no doubt that Harmony will control AppleTV, nVidia Shield and SkyTV. I cannot though see how i can get it to control my Matrix switch, which is made by Wyrestorm. It requires RS232 control but i do not know whether there are bridges between Harmony Hub and these type of devices. Is this too much to expect from the Hub? does this end up being a Raspberry Pi / homebrew type setup?

    Finally, does anyone know whether there is a list of the complete set of devices which are supported?

    August Doorbell Issue

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 05:56 PM PDT

    Hoping someone can help me before I lose my mind!

    Bought a new in box August Doorbell Gen1 the other day and installed it. Must have been a little over ambitious and didn't let it charge long enough as it died during the final leg of the setup, after it connected to my WiFi when it is doing the internet test. When the app went back to the home screen it showed the tab for the camera but it was obviously not connecting. Thinking I had probably messed it up and needed to just start over I went into the app and did the factory reset option which removed it from my account.

    An hour so later after it had been charging I tried to redo the setup from the app and it was not able to find the camera. I looked online and followed the steps to reboot it, still wouldn't find it. Tried doing it from my iPad, no luck. Tried holding the reset button for 7 seconds, nope again. So then I checked my router as it was acting like it was connecting to the network and sure enough it shows the internet connection is active. I tried removing its IP address to see if the app would find it before it connected the following attempt and that didn't work either.

    So then I tried August support because there freaking HAS to be a way to do a full reset on this thing and they were less than helpful, suggesting to wait an hour with it off of the base so the battery dies and then letting fully charge again. Let it sit for three hours off of the base and as soon as I put it back on again, router showed it was connected. So I'm totally at a loss...

    Does anyone know how in the hell you do a full hardware reset on this thing??

    How does Home Assistant confirm that actions were successful?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 12:33 PM PDT

    I'm new to Home Assistant and I'm wondering how it confirms that actions were successful.

    For example, if I send an HTTP command to an HDMI switch to change inputs, what happens if the switch is offline or doesn't actually process the command?

    Ideally I'd like to send a command and wait for a response/reply/update from the device. Another example would be if I send an 'ON' command to a device, I don't want Home Assistant to assume it was successful so the GUI should either show perhaps gray-out the device until it receives a confirmation?

    Cheapest/Simpliest/Wireless Tempature sensors

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 10:59 PM PDT

    I have a smart home with AC, lights, Solar, Alexa, IR sensors, multi room Audio all working primary powered by an ISY. I'm looking to add wireless temp sensors mainly for monitoring changes to things. I.e. Attic fan went out and it's hot up there and never would have know if I didn't go up there during the day and hear the motor humming.

    Q. What cheap simple wireless temp/humidity sensors exist I could tie to my ISY and log via OpenHAB or HomeAssistant? I don't have OpenHAB or HomeAssistant installed but think it's the logical step towards logging/trending. My ISY has Zigbee, Zwave, and Insteon capabilities. Also one will go in my attic so 130f is likely in the summer temp range if I had to guess

    Smart Lock + smart Garage Door keypad options?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 10:02 PM PDT

    I'm looking for a keypad solution for both a garage door and a normal door/deadbolt that has remotely manageable and configurable users... need to support 10+ users, each with their own access codes and "schedules" when those codes should work. Should also support app access (unlocking/opening door via smartphone) for those users when they have permissions. Does any such solution exist? Ideally something I can pick up at a local big box store... Nest/Yale deadbolt looks like a good solution, but doesn't have any compatible garage keypad option... and the myQ/Liftmaster/yale stuff doesn't seem to have any reasonable user/access code management support (unless I'm missing something?).

    RoomMe Now Integrates with IFTTT and Hubitat

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 11:57 AM PDT

    Just a quick note to let people know that I've had a new article published by Residential Tech Today Magazine on RoomMe and their new integration with IFTTT and Hubitat. For those not familiar with RoomMe, they are sensors that track individuals in a home as they move from room to room through Bluetooth connectivity with their smart phones or watches. This information can then be used by a smart home processor / hub to play a person's favorite music, adjust lights, and more. You can find the full article here:

    I also added some additional information, based on news stories I've recently read, to an article I wrote a few months ago on that was titled "The ISP Stranglehold". That article can be found here:

    Neuwill Smart Intercom Gateway

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 09:33 PM PDT

    Neuwill Smart Intercom Gateway

    I was wondering if anyone knows how to work with these Smart Intercom Gateway. I have one installed in my flat and it's branded as Neuwill. It's built in to the wall and it rings for the main door and garage doorbell.

    I would like to connect this to an alexa/google home. But I don't know where to start and if it's possible. So I was hoping someone had experience with it here? I think it has a lot of potential and I'm currently wasting it. Thanks.

    Advice on picking TRV (Thermostatic radiator valve)

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 09:03 AM PDT

    Hello,

    I am currently trying hard to pick a suitable thermostat (Thermostatic radiator valve, not those things on the wall, where you pick temperature) for my apartment. It is hard to test now but enough time before winter.

    My current setup/parameters:

    1. Raspberry Pi 3b;
    2. Home Assistant;
    3. Installed nodeRED in HA with some basic automations;
    4. Conbee ii usb stick (zigbee);
    5. Aeotec z-stick gen5 (z-wave);
    6. Xiaomi Aqara Sensors in each room (temperature, humidity).

    Location: Europe/Germany

    I have already checked these thermostats:

    1. Danfoss LC-13: https://www.amazon.de/Danfoss-Heizk%C3%B6rperthermostat-Stellantrieb-LC-13-DAN_LC-13/dp/B00IGE38JM
    2. Eurotronic Z-Wave: https://www.amazon.de/Eurotronic-Energy-Saving-Controller-Intelligent-Thermostat/dp/B075X257NC/ref=sr_1_4?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=3R63O04IRPC95&dchild=1&keywords=eurotronic+heizk%C3%B6rperthermostat&qid=1591889222&s=diy&sprefix=eurotroni%2Cdiy%2C175&sr=1-4
    3. Eurotronic Zigbee: https://www.amazon.de/Eurotronic-Heizungsthermostat-Spirit-ZigBee-LCD-Temperatur-Anzeige/dp/B077GCDDBY/ref=sr_1_5?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=3R63O04IRPC95&dchild=1&keywords=eurotronic+heizk%C3%B6rperthermostat&qid=1591889222&s=diy&sprefix=eurotroni%2Cdiy%2C175&sr=1-5
    4. Danfoss Evo 2: https://www.amazon.de/Danfoss-014G1101-Heizk%C3%B6rperthermostat-Bluetooth-Funktion-Stand-alone-Regler/dp/B074H5ZLSH

    Reviews of all four are not great. Also seems that 1 and 2 are easy to integrate (with Aeotec z-stick gen5) whether with 3 there can be some problems (with Conbee ii USB stick). Not found any integration instructions for option 4.

    Can someone give here an advice? Should I pick one from above list? Are there other alternatives?

    If alternatives, then I would like to have:

    • Easy initial setup;
    • Prefer not having DIY; (DIY people – you are great. However, this is just not my cup of tea. I am more into programming itself)
    • Setup without additional bridge/hub.

    Is it also a good idea to pick thermostat and control it directly by valve position and not by temperature? For example: instead of sending a command to thermostat that I need 20 degrees in the room, I program in nodeRed:

    • If the window is opened or temp in room >= 20, then valve is closed.
    • If the temp in room is >= 18, then valve open 10%.
    • If the temp in room is < 18, then valve open 30%.

    Thank you in advance.

    UPDATED: On the header itself I have Danfoss valve connector (RA I suppose but not 100% sure)
