Doorbell for wired setup without giving up privacy? Posted: 10 Jun 2020 06:09 PM PDT I'm replacing my doorbell chime as part of a remodel, and I was wondering if anyone makes a doorbell chime that will integrate with a home automation system like HomeAssistant or Hubitat. I'd rather not go with something like Ring or whatever Google's is called. [link] [comments]
Which HA setup is right for me? Posted: 10 Jun 2020 04:40 PM PDT Hello everyone. I recently moved into a townhouse and would like to dip into HA for the first time. The big things I would like to do: -integration with Google Home -control a thermostat based on arrival/exit and time of day -have complete control over lighting in my home, including being able to have certain "scenes" begin at certain times or by voice command -don't care if it's cloud based or not -I like things to be highly customizable without the constraint often imposed by "easy" solutions -In other words, I'm willing to get my hands dirty That's about all I'm interested in right now. There are so many solutions out there I just don't know where to start. I'm brand new to the HA scene but have plenty of tech and tinkering experience under my belt. I use Android and Linux, am comfortable scripting, and am familiar with Tasker. Is this all something I can do with a couple Nest Miinis, a hue hub, Nest thermostat, and some Tasker/IFTTT tinkering? Or do I need something like SmartThings or Home Assistant? Thanks for any input! [link] [comments]
Software for mapping property setup Posted: 10 Jun 2020 10:18 AM PDT I want to have a digital map for where things are on my property (utility lines, fences) and in my house (WiFi access points, smart switches, etc). I have been using Google MyMaps and it's great for some things like pulling measurements off shapes based on the satellite data and terrible at others like drawing circles, tagging objects, and zooming in far enough to do in-home stuff. Has anyone had a good experience with software for this purpose? [link] [comments]
Why do you need a security camera? Posted: 10 Jun 2020 07:58 PM PDT There are a lot saying "why should we have a security cam blah blah blah", but really, I mean, why do you find security cameras a necessity? [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jun 2020 11:04 AM PDT Anybody have any experience with MyCroft assistant? How the integration with homeassitant? I already have an echo dot. But the opensource and offline hosting of Mycroft looks promising. [link] [comments]
A way to automate curtains without modifying curtain rail? Posted: 10 Jun 2020 04:36 PM PDT I want to automate the curtains but I can't modify or replace the curtain rail. Please share your ideas. [link] [comments]
New router does not split 5/2.4ghz channels, no smart plugs will reprogram? Posted: 10 Jun 2020 02:16 PM PDT I had been having a ton of issues with my AT&T fiber, and the technician confirmed yesterday when here that I can't split my 5ghz and 2.4ghz channels as I had, as it was causing all of my connectivity issues (I'm a bit suspicious but the wifi is working much better now...) Now that I can't split 2.4ghz channel, all of my smart plugs around my house don't work and won't program. I checked previous threads similar to this but didn't have luck with the tips. What can I do to get my Smart Life plugs to program with a router that autochooses the channel? Apologies if this is really simple, I'm not very good at these things. Thank you! Garage Light Scene/Routine Question Posted: 10 Jun 2020 09:34 PM PDT Hi All, Situation: The light from the garage motor box that turns on when the garage door opens does next to nothing to illuminate the space (it's a little better than a candle in the middle of the double garage lol). I currently have to go to the switch on the wall to turn on the LED lights to properly illuminate my garage. Task: I'm researching the best way to automate the LED lights to come on when I open the garage door (coming home at night, not day) and also to come on when someone enters the garage from the home (again at night, not day)? Actions Taken: I have now wired the LED lights in the garage through a SONOFF Basic and can control that from eWeLink or Google Home. I have also just ordered a https://www.itead.cc/sonoff-dw2.html (no gateway necessary) as I figured that would be a good way to trigger an event and have that switch the light on/off. Only problem is I don't think I can have that event trigger only at certain times of day. I looked into getting a Philips Hue Motion Sensor to simply have it switch the LED lights on if it sensed motion (car entering or a family member entering the garage at night) as I believe that can trigger a number of ways but then realised I would need to deploy a Philips Hue Gateway and I want to avoid a gateway if possible (is that even possible?) What options do I have? Look forward to the communities thoughts. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jun 2020 09:19 PM PDT Has anyone had any luck integrating Yamaha Musiccast devices into a Smartthings environment? Our whole house is equipped with various Musiccast devices, from basic speakers to a receiver. I'd love to be able to add these to Smartthings to be able to more easily control things. I know you can with Sonos and Bose speakers, but I don't see a way to do it with Yamaha. Ideally I just want the ability to play Spotify to a given set of speakers easily. Any thoughts? Alexa Smarthome Question --> "if"-commands possible? Posted: 10 Jun 2020 12:54 PM PDT Is it possible to do "if" commands on alexa smart home routines? example: i have a doorsensor for my balcony door. i want my balcony smart light turn on when i am opening the door, but this has to happen only after sunset /certain time of day. is it possible with alexa routines or do i have to get yet another smarthome app, which i would´t prefer (i like everything in one place) [link] [comments]
Halo Home Smart LED Motion Sensor Flood Issues With Programming - My Halo Home Journey Begins Posted: 10 Jun 2020 08:24 PM PDT So I should have joined this sub before investing in all of the Halo Home products for my kitchen remodel. I actually didn't plan on home automation out of the gate. An architect's post on lighting design sent me down a rabbit hole for a couple of weeks learning how to design the lighting for the kitchen instead of just putting cans everywhere. Of the five or so LED brands he recommended for quality, Halo is in there as a real value. After figuring out the specific design learning about foot candles and beam spread at working heights, I got an approximately $1,500 quote for 16 LED recessed of various types (gimbals, sizes, selectable temperature) switches and enclosures. Lastly, I asked Eaton technical support whether those fixtures work with any of their automation and they said no. So back to the drawing board, spent an entire day using online tools and specs to redo the design with Halo Home fixtures, switches, and various modules. My design banks on the use of gimbals strategically in front of the pantry cabinets and artwork to shine light where it's needed. It also banks on controlling the temperature and brightness of specific fixtures to create cohesive themes or scenes. Of course the gimbals aren't Halo Home, but will be using Smart Light Adapter. Placed my order and slowly started to receive everything. None of the recessed are in yet, but my electrician did replace a couple of old motion detector security lights for me in the rear of the property with a couple of HALO Home Smart LED Motion Sensor Floods. Here we go with the first set of issues. The instructions aren't clear and figuring out one motion sensor from another was difficult. The light and motion sensors are two separate devices although only one fixture. But more importantly, using the Internet Access Bridge didn't work initially. Unlike other posts in this sub, I had to move it closer to the fixtures, not the WiFi access point. Now that I can remotely access them, I cannot update the programming over WiFi. Only local over Bluetooth. Even when I go, it's hit or miss whether my programming is saved. Any advice? I'm too far into my investment to switch brands, and Lutron, who is local to me, doesn't appear to offer fixture level programming. Plus they never called me for an interview 10 years ago LOL. No worries, I still buy their stuff. [link] [comments]

Recommendations: Automate In Window Shades Posted: 10 Jun 2020 10:55 AM PDT We have a large 4x bay window in the front of our house. They're Pella, with the in-window shades. Great for aesthetics, but I'm having a terrible time finding a smart home solution for them. All the stuff I've found rotates a chain, none pull a singular cord. I saw Pella has their own solution, but it's not compatible with Alexa or Google. Has anyone here successfully found an alternative? Or is Pella's branded one my best shot? [link] [comments]
Need direction as to where to look. Thermostat specific. Posted: 10 Jun 2020 03:01 AM PDT Two story, 3 floors home. I work from home all the time in basement (it's cold). Two zone system, with kids bedrooms struggling to stay cool. We are an Apple household. Our ac cannot run both zones effectively. It will run for 2 hours and be highly inefficient. I need a system that can run one at a time, or allow multiple schedules. Ideally I would run the fan every other 15 minutes assuming the air is not on or set priority for fan. Daytime, if upstairs is not on, run fan. Nighttime, run fan all time. During night cold air comes down so main floor doesn't run at all (thermostat in stairwell), but during day the upstairs can run (keep it 78 up there). Eventually would tie automation in with automatic blinds to cut down sunlight. Have school aged children, use Alexa, have Apple products. What direction should I look? Or is nothing like this really doable quite yet? [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jun 2020 05:29 PM PDT My Nest App says that my thermostat is offline, but when I look at the thermostat itself, it is connected. I have checked permissions, reinstalled the app, signed out and back in, nothing changes. I also have 2 of my three ring cameras showing as offline. One may be because of the battery, but my hardwired doorbell also says it's offline. I have other devices that are using the wifi no problem. Restarting the router didn't help. Had anyone experienced this? [link] [comments]
Meross wifi switch--how the heck do you put the wall plate on? Posted: 10 Jun 2020 05:05 PM PDT For those of you who have installed Meross wifi switches that come with the "screwless" wall cover plate...how do you get this thing on? It looks like it's supposed to snap on, and I can get it to snap on one side, but not fully. I can push it so it snaps on the OTHER side, but then the original side is loose :( Is mine defective, or am I just missing some trick to this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jun 2020 04:29 PM PDT I have a setup of mostly Hue lights and iHome plugs, all maintained through HomeKit and connected to Google Mesh. For no reason, the iHome plugs will show "not responding" for no reason. Sometimes it's just one or two plugs. This morning all were in a non responding state. I know that in the past if the router was unplugged/ plugged in those plugs would t auto connect like Hue does. Perhaps there was a power bump overnight? Other than that they used to be very reliable but not so much any longer. Anybody else have issues with iHome plugs? [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jun 2020 12:21 PM PDT I am wondering if anyone has got any tutorials to make a Dyson Fan (without WiFi) smart. I would preferably like to add the ability to control the fan using WiFi. Using an IR repeater (like a broadlink) isn't really what I want as I often move my fans to different rooms in the house and I don't want to have to move the broadlink as well. Thanks, Vel [link] [comments]
Smart lock recommendations for 2 family house Posted: 10 Jun 2020 04:06 PM PDT Hello, I own a 2 family home and rent out the bottom floor. I share the main door with the tenant. It's a double door without a deadbolt, just a keyhole on the doorknob. Any recommendation on a smart lock to use in this situation? Should i have something where i can control/remove profiles from my phone when a tenant moves out? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 Jun 2020 11:36 AM PDT Hi everyone, I am extremely new to home automation. I was giving Amazon Echo as a present a few months ago and I finally set it up. so far I have set up my Roborock S5 vacuum and Landroid M Lawnmower. I am hoping to do blinds next. I need curtains for a screen door, 11 regular windows, and 2 wide windows. What are your suggestions? I just need something basic that works with Alexa and affordable since I am buying so many. Let me know. [link] [comments]
