Question from the newbie: batteries nightmare

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 02:24 AM PDT

Hey. I am looking forward to stepping into the automation world and one thing makes me awake at night...

All these amazing smart devices are battery-powered. How do you manage not to get crazy with 10-20+ devices that require either charging or battery replacement?

    Childproof smart lock?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 06:20 PM PDT

We have a kid that will be 2 next month and who's tall enough to reach the deadbolt and unlock it. Since all of our door handles are levers I currently have childproof latches that can be positioned above and below the lever to stop him from opening doors, however this also stops Dad from getting in the house until I can get to door to open it.

Any suggestions for locking mechanisms that can keep little man in without locking Dad out?

    Edit:

    • I have Home Assistant with a zigbee/z-wave controller that I'd like to integrate with

    • If it is a deadbolt, having a key on it would be preferable. Also I wouldn't want a knob turn on the inside since that's the weak link currently

Looking for smart switches to put into

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 11:35 PM PDT

I am about to get new apartment. I want to put smart switches into most of my wall outlets (I do not add them to the wall sockets in homelab) and light switches (possibly with dimming). Outlets are 230VAC 50hz (PL/EU), I would like to utilize 16A. Electrical boxes are 60mm deep.

I want to use power metering of those switches and run them only over local Internet (separate VLAN). I am not (yet) fully convinced into using zigbee/z-wave/lora. I also value safety over $$, so I can pay more for UL certified device.

In my current apartment I run Home Assistant Core (python package on dedicated VM) with node-red for my automations. I would love to stick with that. Definitely I can do some coding if needed. I have some sonoff (POW R2 and POW R1) devices (flashed with Tasmota) but I would rather change them for something safer. I was looking mostly into Tuya and Shelly, but I am open for suggestions.

I did copy the list of already recommended plugs from other post below.

    Z-wave

    • Aeon Labs Smart Switch

    • Neo Coolcam plugs. Type NAS-WR02ZU EU

    • Greenwave Powernode

    • ZW-15RM (US)

    • Fibaro

    WIFI

    • Shelly 2.5

    • Shelly 1PM

    • Wemo insight

    • TP-Link Kasa

    • Eufy

    • Sonoff S31

    • myStrom WiFi Switch

    • TP-LINK HS110

    • Sonoff POW R2

    Whole Home USB-C

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 11:49 AM PDT

    Whole Home USB-C

For a new home build, I was thinking would dropping USB-C PD cables along with CAT6 make sense . This could apply to both Data and Power.

Looking at the USB Power Delivery specification, it looks like it can replace a lot of my wall-warts. Looking at how my power outlets are utilized, many of them are DC powered. For example, looking at my bedroom, I have a USB Charging adapter (which powers each of our Watch, Phone and headphones) at each night stand, an Alexa plugged in, a DC charger for my laptop. I have multiple Pis deployed around the house.

It would be great to replace many of those wall chargers. Also, it would be easier to make more compact USB-C hubs that could just be used to assign right profiles to USB-C connected devices.

For Data, the cables could support 10gbps and in future, it would be great to have wifi routers and laptops, future low power SBC, Alexa, Google homes etc all get data and power from single outlet.

The primary challenge would be short distances for USB-C cable. 20 ft seems to be the limit for 1gbps. Is there a way we can have distribution boxes at strategic location that can route power.

I am just trying to see if the folks here have an idea on how they would pre-wire an ideal home that can support the next 10-15 years of technology if cost was not really a concern.

Lutron warns that a Sonos S2 upgrade may break Lutron integration

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 08:28 AM PDT

If you have a Lutron lighting system (Caseta, RadioRA2 Select, RadioRA2, or Homeworks QS/QSX) and you have a Sonos speaker system integrated with it through the native integration support (i.e. not through Home Assistant, Control4, etc) there is a chance you will break all the integration if you upgrade to Sonos' new S2 app.

The TLDR is if you have a mix of S1 only and S2 capable devices, you have a problem. All S2 capable devices should be OK.

Read the Lutron App Note here: http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/Sonos_Integration_FAQs.pdf

If you have Caseta or RA2 Select you can fix it somewhat yourself. RA2 and QS/QSX users will have to break out the programming software if you have it, or call a dealer to do it for you.

Something to think about before going off the cliff.

Smart lighting/digital displays: Beginner cry for help!

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 08:42 PM PDT

Hey guys, I've been going over this subreddit for a couple of days, and what an awesome community (and awesome subject matter). My imagination for fun projects has been running wild, luckily my limited discretionary spending money helps define parameters for what I can reasonably do.

I want to outfit my office with smart LED strip lighting and at least a couple of monitors mounted on the walls to serve as digital picture frames. I would like to be able to configure the lighting and pictures displayed either through my computer or my smart phone (Android if it matters). I'm a software developer so I'm ok with solutions that might require coding, but I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to hardware, smart home protocols etc. It has admittedly been daunting to start digging into this.

I have been doing some preliminary research here as well as www.thedigitalpictureframe.com for some insight on how to go about this.

I have a Samsung smart things hub that I haven't opened yet, but aside from that I'm starting from a clean slate. If I can make use of this hub to do what I want, great. Otherwise I'm open to whatever else would be needed.

Might someone be able to help me out, point me in the direction of a relevant thread or site and recommendations for the following

Monitors: I was thinking something along the lines of https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01MR54JLM/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_qxf4EbC84HS4P

LED light strips: Philips hue is supposed to be the best? Do they require their hub? Are their more economical alternatives that can do the same?

Hubs/controllers: This is a big source of cluelessness for me. This is likely where I need the most help.

I would infinitely appreciate any guidance you guys can offer. Thanks so much in advance!

    Kohler Connect app "challenges "

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 06:00 PM PDT

Recently installed a Kohler Setra kitchen faucet with the corresponding app to link with Alexa. The app let's you set routines to fill things automatically (think coffee pot, etc) just by saying "fill coffee pot". Neat when it works.

HOWEVER, once you set a routine in the app, there is literally no way to delete or modify it. I even deleted the app and reset the electronics on the faucet and the friggin routine still showed up.

Does anyone have experience with the Kohler app? Am I missing something or is the app really this bad?

Identifying MLV Bulbs for inovelli dimmers

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 05:45 PM PDT

So I have started putting in Inovelli dimmers and initially had some issues with flicker.

After trying one I had around listed on their compatibility, I confirmed it was indeed the bulbs and not a malfunction.

Unfortunately their compatibility only lists a handful of bulbs, all warm with no daylight bulbs. It does say any MLV bulb should work.

Is there a list of which bulbs are mlv vs elv? I can't find it in the specs I'm seeing online and I really don't want to just buy random bulbs to figure out what works, especially since I am ordering to avoid stores atm.

Anything you could point me at would be useful.

Blank Canvas - whole home, what would you do?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 12:46 AM PDT

Currently in the design stages of a new home build and have a completely blank canvas. I've looked through the forum and there's a lot of helpful info but there are SOOO many options and now I'm confused. If you were building a new home now, what would you recommend for various smart functions. Idely, would have a system that has good cross compatibility (ie home assistant, Alexa, Google, zwave or zigbee, etc), easy upgradeable/future proof, reasonable costs, and somewhat simple (not too many ecosystems) and secure. Below are some of the systems that seem to get good reviews but would love to get other thoughts.

    1) Overall control: Home assistant seems interesting as I like to be able to customize and tweak. Have seen the concept 4 and savant but staying away from those given costs 2) Voice: Alexa 3) Lights: Thinking of smart switches for anything controlled by switches and hue bulbs for lamps 4) Window Coverings: no idea as I'm finalizing what coverings but have seen the lutron and somfy. Thinking of some pull up and down cellular shades but not sure if they can be motorized and made smart 5) Thermostats: Ecobee given the sensors have motion detection as well but I don't like the geo fencing issues (ie having to use life 360 for multiple users) 6) Smoke detector: I like the Nest Protect but may need another option if I'm using the ecobee for the thermostat (or maybe it's ok?) 7) Security cameras: no idea on which cameras and NVR software but heard good things about blueiris 8) Security for doors and windows: Ring alarm 9) Doorbell: Ring 10) Other: was thinking of adding smart garage, sprinklers, vacuum. Anything else? 11) Home networking: thinking of adding a home network server rack and trying to localize as much as possible for security (ie not going through a cloud system)

Looking for Zigbee or Tasmota light bulb with narrow beam. Like 10° or so.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 12:45 PM PDT

Does anyone know of bulbs that satisfy this requirement? I have a water fountain in my backyard that I'd like to light up at night. It's about 40' from the edge of my patio cover, and is about 6' in diameter. I figure a 10° beam angle would work great for a spotlight mounted on the patio cover.

RGB would be nice, but regular white is okay too. Needs to be able to connect to my deCONZ or ZHA, or MQTT if it's a wi-fi bulb.

E26/27 base preferred, but I'm not against replacing the fixture I already have if that's what I need to do.

Looking for a completely wireless outdoor security camera.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 07:55 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm not sure if thie is the right place for my question but I'll give it a try anyway.

I'm currently looking for some completely wireless outdoor security-cameras. Personally I'd prefer PoE cams but sadly it's impossible to run the necessary cables. In the places I want to cameras there isn't even power so that I completely have to rely on battery power and wireless data transfer. In general, my automation setup is very simple. Just Samsung Smartthings, Google Home and lots of Philips Hue lights.

I'd prefer local data storage/analysis but something cloud-based would be fine too. I also want to avaid subscription based models but would go with them if needed.I also want to be able to add indoor cams to the system and to be able to access it from everywhere. Phone notifications in case of specific events would be nice too.

From my research so far I found that the eufylife eufyCam might be an option.Any thoughts on this? Or any other recommendation?

    Thanks in advance!

Fun Experiment: Making a "smart" chair

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 10:45 AM PDT

Fun Experiment: Making a "smart" chair

I've seen this done with a Ecolink Door/Window sensor + generic Pressure Mat by simply connecting the two wires coming out of the mat into the two leads inside the Door sensor:

    Like this

I would like to do the same thing with a toilet seat pressure sensor instead of a pressure mat.

The toilet seat sensor has 4 wires (Yellow, Green, Red, and Black). Does anyone know which two wires I should try to connect to the two leads? I don't own a multimeter.

If there's no way to know for sure which two wires to use (if any) without a multimeter, can I just try connecting different combinations of wires to see which combination would work?

EDIT: Just a guess.. but maybe connecting the red/black wires to a 6 volts 4 AA battery case and the green/yellow wires to the two leads. Based on the toilet seat pressure sensor is "intended" to connect to this device, powered by 4 AA batteries.

    Cheapest small colour smart lights/lamps?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 01:07 AM PDT

Morning. What would be a good option for small colour lights, battery or mains powered, that can be controlled by WiFi/Hue/SmartThings/Alexa, etc?

Edit: Sorry if it wasn't clear, but I'm specifically looking for self contained small lights, like the Hue Go etc, only smaller and cheaper.

    Cheers

Smart Vents - Yes or No?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 07:06 AM PDT

Havn't seen any newer posts that really get into opinions, personal experience, etc of smart vents. Everything Iv read was 3+, 2+, 1+ years old.

It looked like general consensus was "No, no matter what they'll hurt your HVAC system"

I saw some questions asking "well since I can manually change the vent, what's the difference?" And still consensus was the same.

Just trying to see what's going on recently, if they've been updated to be better, adjust for pressure, more reliable, safer, etc.
