WiFi Lights Automation with TV on/off

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:51 PM PDT

Novice home automation geek here. Looking for some expert advice on this stumper... I recently got a new TV that I'd like to add some bias lights behind - will help to show off our new shiplap feature wall.

Previously, I've used some el-cheapo LED strips from Amazon that are USB powered. My home is filled with LIFX bulbs and love the capabilities they offer. That led me to purchase LIFX's Z LED strip kit. Only problem here is that they are NOT USB powered, but require a 120v plug.

I'd love to setup an action/scene where the lights would turn on when the TV is turned on and off via the remote. Yes - I know I can setup scenes when using voice assist for controlling the TV, but I want this capability to exist when the remote is used.

First thing that came to mind was, does a smart plug that could detect a change in power consumption, to then perform an action?

Thoughts? Advice? Am I trying to do something too complicated?

4 zones with 4 different sources (1 iTunes account)

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:48 PM PDT

I have a small business where I play music in 4 different rooms. They have 2 speakers each (L + R). The source will always be different for the rooms (4 iPads or something), but i'll be using the same Apple Music account.

What system would you guys recommend? I know there is the Sonos way, but that is so expensive because I need 4 of those amps.

Ideally I would like 1 unit where all the speaker wire goes into. That unit has 4 inputs and I can select what zone gets what input, but it has to be able to handle 4 different inputs and allocate them to 4 different zones.

For the sources I guess 4 iPads would be fine? Unless people have a better idea.

NodeRED flow to alert on certain weather conditions.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:02 PM PDT

NodeRED flow to alert on certain weather conditions.

Just another NodeRED flow for anyone out there who would like alerts. Personally I have had times where there were tornado warnings in my area and I didn't know about it till two hours later. Headphones on and gaming with some background noise and no warning. A light flashing next to me however would have been a good thing. You can easily find the weather code for whatever may be an issue in your area that OpenWeatherMap deals with. Then just change the switch node to the code, codes, or ranges you need and use the flow as a basis for how you want to configure things. I have my RGB's set to flash white a couple times and then change to red but if you had other conditions you wanted to track you could easily set more than one output on the switch node and then set them to any color you like.

Anyway this is easily customizeable and relies on HomeAssistant. I am working with Sonoff switches for some lamps and Tuya based RGB light bulbs both of which are flashed to ESPHome.

Take a look here for the flow and some other information. https://github.com/nightshade00013/NodeRED-Weather-Alert

    Securing ambilights to TV?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:59 PM PDT

So the adhesive that came with my led strips doesnt want to hold to the rear of my tv, so i thought id use hot glue as a non permanent but sturdy solution. That works for a while, but eventually releases and doesnt hold as well. What are you guys using to keep your LEDs secure but also non permanent?

For those who use Sonoff switches for devices like Modems or Routers. Want them to always try to stay online?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:23 PM PDT

Been using this YAML with ESPHome for quite a while now and I think all the bugs are worked out. Anyway the basic thing is that if you have a modem or router you probably want to keep it online all the time but there are occasions where you will need to reboot it as well. My modem and router are in a closet so to do a reboot is frustrating at times, my AP is easily accessed but I also have in mind I may want to trigger a reset on one or all of them while I am not home to fix an issue.

I came up with this setup and it works pretty well. I can trigger a reset via the physical button on the Sonoff switches I am using or within Home Assistant and they will power down for 30 seconds and then power back up. This is all performed under the switch firmware so there is no worry if it takes a little bit for the device in particular to boot up or if that devices is needed to actually trigger the power on like with a router or WiFi AP. Also if there is a power loss they will power the device back up when power is restored but you may want to delay this by longer by inserting a "- delay" in the onboot section after "then:" in case the power is only on for a few seconds then it should boot normally.

I highly recommend setting a static IP on your Home Assistant or other control software as well as on the Sonoff switch you are using for modems, routers, or WiFi AP's otherwise you can potentially have an issue where they will end up in a kind of boot loop because they can not access their controller. They MAY have an issue as well in some instances where they may not get a WiFi connection fast enough but if the router or WiFi AP has a power brick the short reset ESPHome uses generally is not an issue.

Anyway here is where I have the YAML stored and I have a few others that may be helpful for my ESPHome configs there as well. https://github.com/nightshade00013/ESP-Home-Configs/blob/master/Sonoff-AlwaysON.yaml

    Smart lock fingerprints?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:50 PM PDT

    Howdy,

I have an August lock and hate it. It's so loud and the "unlock when I pull up" thing worked maybe 1/5 times. I don't want to hook it up to any of the wireless bridges.

I don't think that I want to rely on a BT connection for keyless entry following this experience which leaves me with keypad entry, which I'm cool with. And yes, I know they all have key backups. The touchscreen ones all seem to leave fingerprints and the button ones are pretty okay, though mostly not actually smart. As a twist for all things fingerprint, I have a machining and welding shop in my backyard and would like a smart lock on that door as well as one going into my house, but my hands are very often very dirty when I'd really want keyless or proximity unlock. The oil and grime that's common in a machine shop will almost certainly eat away the rubber used on button entry ones too.

Is there a good touchscreen keypad that really really resists fingerprints? Is there a keyless option that just works better than second gen August?

    Shelly + Siri?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:41 AM PDT

So, I use a Shelly 1 to open/close my garage door. I also ride a motorcycle and can control my iphone via bluetooth voice command. I'd like to be able to press the button on my bluetooth and tell siri to open my garage door when I get home, however Homekit doesn't recognize Shelly. I found a way to install homekit firmware onto the Shelly, but since it's acting as a garage door opener I have it set to turn off after 1 second. I don't know if I can still do that with the homekit firmware. Any solutions? (I also have alexa and smart things and am planning on eventually migrating everything to home assistant)

[Question] deCONZ/Conbee II and "living" scenes

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:21 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I used to use the Philips Hue hub and their respective app. Since I moved, my Aqara hub was not able to have proper connectivity with all the sensors, so I migrated to deCONZ with a Conbee II stick.

This allowed the sensors to connect to the bulbs' mesh network and I was able to get connectivity all throughout my house.

However, since I am no longer using the native Hue hub, I no longer have those "living scenes" feature. I have a hue light inside my fire place that gives a fire place effect (changing red-yellow hues and changing brightness/saturation).

Is there a way to integrate a similar feature with deCONZ?

Aqara mini switch + Xiaomi hub - webhook?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:11 AM PDT

Hey, I have a lot of devices in my home that all work with Google home.

I recently got a hold of an Aqara Mini Switch. I found out that it only works with Xiaomi Gateway (or some Aqara Hub, I guess?) so I got the Xiaomi one.

Now it looks like (something that I could have found researching :)) there's no way to take the button out of the Xiaomi ecosystem. I was expecting an IFTTT service, but there is none.

Is there any way I could make this button send a webhook?

New homeowner, looking to automate (hell yea). I have some Alexa devices, a robovac, and a few Hue lights/a hub. What next?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:11 AM PDT

Devices currently owned are as follows: - Fire TV Cube - Echo Dots (2) - Echo Show - Eufy BoostIQ robovac 11s - Phillips Hue hub - Phillips Hue white bulbs (2)

Ideally, I would like to automate lights, thermostat, vacuum, and home security system. (In that order). Bonus points if all this stuff can be controlled from a single device that I can mount on the wall or something.

I'm not attached to the Alexa devices if those aren't as good as others. I have a little experience with the smart home stuff, but it's kinda overwhelming trying to find out where to go first.

    Cameras recommendation

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:33 AM PDT

Hey, I'm looking to add cameras to my homeassistant setup and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

I have motionEye installed for the management of cameras and plan on holding the recordings (potentially on a USB disk attached to the rpi) for a small amount time. Most importantly, any IP camera must be Wi-Fi connected and accessed locally only (no internet connected features). I don't mind an amount of tinkering / flashing custom firmwares (I've done tuya and sonoff devices previously).

    Any ideas?
