Special needs mom needs desperate measures!

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 04:47 PM PDT

Completely new to HA...but desperate times & all that. I need knowledgeable brains to help tackle what sometimes seems an insurmountable challenge.

I have 6 yo with Down Syndrome who elopes.

    Takes off.

    Runs away.

    Gleefully.

He does not care if he is dressed or wearing shoes (which have his medical ID bracelet attached). He does not care if there are dangerous things about because he does not recognize them as such. He just likes to explore. If there is a door or gate that he can get out of, he will do so. It doesn't help that his older siblings forget to lock stuff behind themselves every once in a blue moon. He has escaped from homes, offices, schools, stores, vehicles, shopping carts, strollers, car seats...the list goes on.

Did I mention that he's quick?

Today he got us an exclusive introduction to half of our county's sheriff's officers.

So here's what I am hoping to accomplish. Tell me if I'm batty. If I'm not completely unrealistic, point me in the right direction....because I'm just spinning in the circles that he's running around me.

    • Keyless entry deadbolt locks for front door, utility door into home from garage, and utility door from garage into side yard.

    • I think that I really need as much as possible to be auto-locking with keyless entry from exterior, entry/exit notification, camera for front door (just installed) and possibly gate to see what direction he takes off in. Door ajar notification would be fab. I wouldn't be averse to audible door alarms, either.

    • It would be amazing to find some way of keeping him from opening those doors from the inside without creating further safety hazards. He happily moves chairs to climb up to higher locks and quickly figures out most childproofing. I was thinking that something using fingerprint tech to unlock from the inside would not violate code specs (like double-sided deadbolts would) and wouldn't create an exit problem for other kids in case of a fire/emergency. Is that even possible?

    • Sliding glass door lock.

    • Locks for vinyl fencing...we have two gates that are set-up 'zoo style' into the backyard.

    • The ability to add window sensors at some point.

    • I think that I really need as much as possible to be auto-locking with keyless entry from exterior, entry/exit notification, camera for front door and possibly gate to see what direction he takes off in. Door ajar notification would be fab. I wouldn't be averse to audible door alarms, either.

We are an Android home and quite iOs-phobic. We do have both Alexa & Google Assistant and I'd be willing to keep them plugged in if you you tell me that's what it will take. Recently added a Ring Pro doorbell. Spouse has lots of professional IT knowledge so programming stuff isn't a problem...just no experience with home automation.

Expandable for garage, enviro controls, etc. might be handy in the future but isn't a deal breaker as they aren't part of my current emergency. At least, I don't think they are. Yet.

We also live in an area prone to rolling blackouts to help prevent wildfires.

So that's where I'm at. Too big of an uphill challenge? Perhaps. Hopefully you all can tell me otherwise.

Is it assumed that if I have a "normal" looking doorbell that I can hardwire a Nest video doorbell to it? Or do I need to pop it off and check for anything specific?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 02:16 PM PDT

Just want to check before I get one and find out too late. Otherwise I'll have to get the ring that I can use with a battery.

    thank you

Best way to create virtual 3 way switch

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 07:13 PM PDT

I recently bought a house and one room has recessed lighting with a switch for the lights on the opposite side of the room from where I want it. I don't want to rip down drywall everywhere to run a new wire. Where I want the switch there is an existing switch that controls an outlet that I don't use. Basically, can I replace both switches with smart switches where one just toggles the other switch with the load on and off even though they are on different circuits? Thanks!

Please Help! I am swapping my old 80's Nutone IS-305 speakers with IS-455 and I need a cross-reference speaker wiring diagram.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:03 PM PDT

Both are three-wire speakers. The old IS-305s were wired to the blue, grey, and red terminals. But the IS-455s are labeled red, black, and orange. The circuit boards are the exact same size, with the same screw-down terminals. But the traces on the circuit boards are different. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    RGB LED Lights Question

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 11:50 PM PDT

So I've seen rgb led light strips that change color to music, but the music has to be played out loud and the microphone on the led strip has to pick it up. Now I don't want to play my music out loud for the led strips to change colors. So, is there anyway of getting an rgb led strip to sync with music that is not being played out loud? I love using my headphones to listen to music on Spotify, and for my led strip to be flashing to the song would be amazing. I would think it would be as easy as connecting a usb led strip into the back of my pc, going on Spotify, and connecting the device but I guess not.

Having issues with a bright green status LED on the Iq Panel

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 07:44 PM PDT

I guess I could cover it with some white tape. It's irritating that you can't turn off the LED in settings. Tear it down and desolder the LED, or is there a better way?

Lutron Caseta w/ Feit bulbs (Costco)

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:05 AM PDT

Hey... well I think I ran into a major mess up.

So I pulled the trigger and replaced the can lights with the Costco Feit retrofit kits (Dimmable). I did about 90% of the house... it was a ton of bulbs. It was a good price and I liked the clean look (I have over 30 can lights in the house so the bulbs add up)

After reading around here and talking with folks everyone pretty much said Lutron Caseta is a good investment. You can do SmartThings or use the app... it's just solid. So I ordered those got them all setup but they flickered. I assumed it was something with the app so I just wired up everything and started to do app setup... well nothing in the app changed how they are working.

I'm getting a slow on/off when the switch is on. Like it goes to full brightness and then off... cycles about once a second. Now it seems like Lutron is sensitive to type of bulbs so maybe I have an issue.

Any ideas before I take a bunch of switches out, box them up and return them to Home Depot. I'm sure they are gonna look at me like I'm running some scam...

I can't switch the bulbs out.. the wife would kill me. She didn't know we were getting new switches in doing it while she is out. So my option is go back to old switch and try something different later or fix the Lutron.

"If you don't own or know how to use a voltmeter you should just hire someone" - How true is this statement?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 08:41 PM PDT

I just plan on replacing 2 switches. Both are single pole switches that I want to replace with a smart switch. Wouldn't I just note the position of the wires attached to the previous switch and the coloring of the wires to know how to wire it to my new switch?

I haven't set my eyes on any model yet if that matters

    Widget color picker (Android)

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 08:39 PM PDT

Hey guys, so I setup a led strip and connected it to my alexa through the magic home pro app. I'm using a tablet as a dashboard for a bunch of virtual buttons that run routines for alexa that control my house.

I'm wondering if there is a widget that is a color picker that I could use to control the color of my led strip lights. I could make buttons for all of the different colors for that light but it would be ideal of I could find a color picker widget.

Alternatively it would be great if there was a shortcut/widget to open the alexa to that devices color picker screen.

I basically want the ability to open a color picker directly from the home screen and or have a widget that would directly do that. It seems like with a bunch of smart lights out there, there would be something like this right?

    Any advice?

    IR Remote automation using Switchbot

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 11:14 AM PDT

Has anyone had experience using the switchbot bundle to automate random IR remotes around their home. We have 3 remotes for 3 devices (window exhaust, ceiling fan and wall AC) that I'd like to "smarten" : https://imgur.com/LsbutMT

This is the bundle I'm considering:

    https://www.amazon.com/SwitchBot-Thermometer-Hygrometer-Smart-Remote/dp/B07YLW9F3J

The bedroom AC just got its own "Sensibo Air" - which I love. But at $120 a pop its expensive. I'd like to avoid getting one more for the living room AC and another separate system for the living room ceiling fan and kitchen window exhaust.

    Kitchen window has this unit:

    https://www.amazon.com/Bionaire-BW2300-N-Reversible-Airflow-Control/dp/B000065DKJ/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=dual+fan&qid=1600366272&sr=8-9

I recently purchased these from gabes. It says to cut it along the dotted line when you’re done with a section. This is all it comes with and I’m wondering how i would connect it to a power source again similar to this with the cut part and what i would need. I know nothing about this stuff haha.

How to Separate my Smart Lights from Roommates?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:55 PM PDT

An issue. My roommates have swapped all the common area lights with smart lights and we all control them through the google home app. I would like to put a smart light in my room for the dimming functionality but definitely want it separated from the rest of the house. I've never used smart house equipment before, is this achievable and straightforward?

If that's possible, I'd also like to keep it separate from the from the internet and the likes of Google. Could I have it only controlled locally?

    IR best hubs/controllers

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 11:00 AM PDT

    Hey guys.

Currently looking for a good IR Hub, I got this one in my shopping cart https://www.amazon.es/dp/B083LLLVPN/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_jn6yFbS10ZXVS, mainly for the RF function to be able to control my TV cable box, just wondering what would be best and has the best quality. I'm also thinking about the Logitech harmony hub but I know it doesn't have RF function.

Is there a better one within the BroadLink family or another brand entirely?

    Thank you

    Lutron Caseta Issue

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:56 AM PDT

Today I swapped out my Skylark (SCL-153P) dimmers for Caseta (PD-6WCL-WH). Both old and new switches had same 150W capacity for LEDs which is what I have. I was able to get one switch working without issue. I should mention, these are installed side by side in the same box. The switch that works operates 3 overhead LEDs, while the one that won't work operates 5. The LEDs on the switch light up, and "operate", but no lights come on.

All LEDs are the exact same model and I never had any issues with my old switch. I'm 99.99% sure the wiring is correct and connections are very tight. I'm wondering if I should swap the switches to see if its the switch, or something else. I only hesitate to do that as I've already pulled off the inside tabs.

Any and all advice here is appreciated.

VERY THIN USA to UK plug/adaptor

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 07:20 AM PDT

    Hello,

Im looking for a plug/adaptor for a USA device so I can use it in the UK. Its not a cable, its a plug in box like a phone charger so can't be one of the feed in wire ones.

I would like one as slim as possible so it doesn't stick out the wall loads. I bought one from Amazon that will work but it adds 4cm to the plug so im looking for a smaller one if possible?

    Cheers

Getting rid of Wink Hub/General Questions on other things

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 04:05 AM PDT

I am getting rid of my wink hub. I never subscribed to their service because I don't want to pay monthly service charges. I am looking for a good replacement. Probably looking for a zigbee hub that I can easily integrate with homebridge currently running on my synology NAS in Docker. I use this to integrate with apple HomeKit. (if you have any suggestions on a better place to run homebridge I'm open to ideas).

The list below are the current devices that I own.

Chamberlin MyQ Garage Door Opener (with own hub),

    Ring Doorbell,

Phillips Hue 4 bulb set (with hub),

My entire house has dimmable LED bulbs. And so far I have 3 Lutron Caseta dimmable switches connected to (Wink currently),

Looking to use 1 hub for all devices if possible, including the devices with their own hub.

Also want to be able to set up automation for when someone arrives at the door to integrate with HomeKit for face recognition with the new HomeKit features in ios14. So I either need to integrate my ring doorbell or get a new zigbee doorbell (suggestions welcome)

I was going to do 2 separate posts but want to keep it easier for me, so here is the rest of my questions.

Looking to setup my own home security system that I will monitor myself

Was looking at Aqara zigbee sensors. But not sure if they are any good. or how to set up. I am open to suggestions on better ones or if Aqara are the ones to go with.

Also, what else would I need besides sensors for the security system?

    Keypad? Smart Lock?

Thank you for taking the time to look over my long list of questions.

Do they make cameras that don't invade your privacy yet

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 02:28 PM PDT

I'm tired to death of home automation and security equipment that requires that you make an online account and give them access to your devices just to be able to use them on your local network. I don't give a rat's ass about checking my cameras when I'm away from home. I just want to be able to record video and review it later. Can I get a camera that will do that without getting all up in my business?
