    Logitech Harmony Hub not updating

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 10:32 PM PDT

    Hey folks

Logitech released a new Harmony Hub Firmware:

    https://support.myharmony.com/en-us/release-notes

But my Hub just won't update to Version 4.15.280, it keeps staying on Version 4.15.264, no matter how many times I'm syncing (tried with Elite remote, Harmony App and Harmony Desktop software). I have also tried to power everything off for 20 seconds before syncing.

    No fancy DNS blocker e.g. Pi-Hole in-between.

Is there any way I can install it manually?

Control RBB bulb from Alexa or wall switch.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 07:50 PM PDT

Goal: - Put a smart Alexa controlled RGB bulb in an overhead fixture that is controlled by a standard wall mounted light switch. - I must be able to turn off and on the bulb with the switch OR voice command through Alexa. Voice only is not an option

I have Caseta switches in the rest of the house but far as I know they do not offer any RGB products.

The current bulb I have in the fixture looses all voice command when the switch is off and lots of times becomes unassigned from the app when turned off. Not sure why. The brand is Kaza.

I am willing to buy any brand or combo of smart bulb and switch replacement.

    Thanks!

Smart Home Collection by Budget Blinds

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 09:42 PM PDT

Sorry if this has been asked before, I did search before posting. We recently purchased motorized blinds from our local Budget Blinds seller. No complaints, but I wondered if I could pair these with my Samsung Smart Hub. I did locate the Smart Home Collection app (by Budget Blinds) in the Smart Hub App Store, but I cant figure out how to have the Smart Hub detect the blinds. Anyone have any experience automating their Alexa with Budget Blinds Smart Home Collection? Thanks!

What are good thermometer sensors to work with HomeAssistant ?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 06:46 PM PDT

Hey everyone. What thermometers would you recommend to integrate with HomeAssistant ? It's a new setup and I believe that wifi connection would be better as it is the only thing I have today. Looking to instal around 5 or 6 units around a 2 story house. Something not too expensive would be great. Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Anyone know of a good door reinforcer that goes into the wall (not the floor) that is hidden from outside and RFID activated?

Cameras for someone with a lousy internet connection?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 02:50 PM PDT

I'm thinking about putting in some cameras for security on my home. I like the looks and features of cameras like Wyze, sending notifications to the user's phone and allowing for real-time monitoring. Problem is I live in a rural area and I think my upload speed is too slow. A recent speed test showed 0.4 megabits per second up speed. Are any of these systems going to work for me or am I relegated to closed-circuit on-site recording only?

LF Ideas: Where is the garbage can and is it empty?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 02:44 PM PDT

I'd love to set up some automation for taking out the garbage weekly. Barring some awesome robo-can that does it for us, I'm thinking about some sort of sensor setup that knows the can's location (at the house or at the curb) and then whether it's been emptied at the curb, then just notifies the hell out of us so we don't forget it. Ideas?

For the location maybe some sort of paired proximity things? One on the can somewhere and then one on the house where we keep it and another out by the curb (we roll it near the mailbox so could attach to that)? A bit of googling suggested some sort of BLE gizmos, but I haven't messed with anything like that before so I'd need a guide.

Alternatively could I get crazy with an image recognition thing on a camera? Both locations will be in view of my security cam plans (not set up yet), could I hypothetically train an ML thing to recognize the can and report its location to HASS?

For the "has the trash truck come and emptied it yet" part I'm thinking some sort of accelerometer? Our trash company has a lifting arm so the can itself gets dumped. Or maybe weight? Not sure how I'd pull that off.

Outdoor/waterproofing will be an issue. Range too, the curb is pretty far from the house - wifi barely reaches, I doubt something low power will.

    Ideas?

    Smart Switch Help

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 03:00 PM PDT

    Hi All,

Ive finally reached my breaking point with the wemo smart switches and am looking for alternatives. I had to reset everything wemo every other week to get it to work with homekit. So im looking to replace 4 dimmers and 4 plugs. I am pretty much only wanting to use these with homekit. i prefer things that work without internet/cloud but that is not a deal breaker. I tried to google reliable smart switch and most of what i found said wemo so im coming to this community for help.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Trying to have Doorbird ding-dong the chime when either call button or existing doorbell button pressed.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 06:30 PM PDT

I'm attempting to get my house's doorbell chime to ding-dong when either the call button is pressed or the house's doorbell button is pressed. For the "press doorbell to fire chime" bit, it looks like all I have to do is:

    • wire up the chime + transformer to the R1,R1 bi-stable latching relay
    • wire up the doorbell button to the E1,E1 digital input.

    According to the manual.

But, I'm not sure how to have the R1,R1 relay trigger with the press of the call button. I was considering a bridge between E1,E1 and CB1 for the call button, but this feels like I might be wading into voided warranty territory.

Any other ideas? Is there a simpler way?

Most convenient way to turn on the lights in the living room?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 02:34 PM PDT

Hi I have 3 smart bulb and 1 lamp connected to a smart plug and an Alexa (1 Android phone and 1 iPhone) My problem is: When I get home I usually say "Alexa turn on all the lights" et voilà. But sometimes I would like to turn on a couple lights before entering the house. And also, during the night occasionally I wake up to reach the fridge for some water and I don't won't to walk in the dark. I would like to turn on 1 smart light at it's minimum luminosity level. Btw I can't use the normal switches (of course).

I also have NFC cards (NTAG215)

    Any idea?

    Thank you in advance!

Can you export logs from a Eufy Security doorbell?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 07:26 PM PDT

I want to find a way to export the events from my Eufy Security doorbell, but can't seem to find any data export options in the app/online dashboard. My ideal output would be a CSV or something that I can convert into a log for event timestamps.

Anyone else figure this out already?

Window AC Automation and Monitoring Energy Usage

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 12:20 PM PDT

    Hi reddit!

I have a standard window AC unit (outlet:15A~115V) but unit uses 4.5amps and wanted to find out if I can safely use a smart-plug (TP-Link or similar) which will allow me to:

    1. Monitor energy usage (kWh)
    2. Remotely control the unit (I imagine I can use Sensibo or something similar but any other suggestions would be great)

What's mostly important is being able to (1) monitor energy usage, so if you guys have any suggestions let me know and thanks!

Suggestions for open security system with 3rd Party monitoring?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 01:58 PM PDT

Everything I have right now is so fractured and I'd like to consolidate somewhat....

My main priority is my security system.

I currently have SimpliSafe because my wife wants a 3rd party monitoring service and I don't want contracts or a wired install. I hate that cannot repurpose my simplisafe sensors to use with any home automation devices.

I also have a smartthings hub with a handful of sensors, ecobee thermostat, Blue Iris (with 4 outdoor cameras), Ring Doorbell, and a MyQ Garage Door Opener.

I know I probably can't get all that to work under one nice system, but what are my options for a security system that has monitoring and a I can also the door sensors for other HA stuff?

TL;DR: Looking for simplisafe like system that I can repurpose the sensors for other HA activities.

[HELP] - Smart Switches Burning out leading to Wife Burning Up

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 10:00 AM PDT

First a bit of background. I've been a techie for decades. I built many PCs and servers. I can solder, 3d print, patch drywall, and do basic electrical and plumbing. I'm certainly prone to mistakes, but I understand the value of following instructions and methodically checking my work.

In our last house I replaced about 1/2 of the light switches with smart switches. I started with a mix with two WEMO switches and two Leviton switches. I liked the Leviton Wifi smart switch and used those for the rest of my work. Everything worked great.

We moved about three years ago and I immediately replace about half of the switches in the new house with Leviton Wifi switches. At first, the wifi in the new house was not up to the task, so I upgraded to a Google Mesh setup.

In the second year, two of the Leviton switches burned out. One stopped working altogether, no lights, no response. Toggling the breaker did nothing. It was bricked. The second failed in the on position but was still responsive. The light was always on, but the switch though it was working. I updated the firmware for all of the switches, toggled the circuit, and re-setup the switch with no success.

After replacing both of those I started having issues with one of the circuits blowing about once a month. I had a second, and then a third switch brick and decided to try swapping out all of the switches with z-wave switches as I thought that Leviton was letting me down.

At this point, I've replaced almost everything with Zooz z-wave switches. In the process, I found the issue with the circuit blowing. Our house was built prior to 2011 and the half-hot in the master bedroom was using a two-wire traveler (black and white, no red). Following the diagrams had led me to wire the white wires together, but that white was hot and had no black electrical tape to indicate that. Once I pulled every outlet and switch in the room I tracked down the issue and resolved it.

After that point I started all of my troubleshooting by pulling all of the switches, tracing and marking the Line and Load for each set of wires, and then carefully wiring each circuit, testing with a multi-meter, and then loading the items back into the box. I am following the manufacturers wiring diagrams exactly, but only after tracing each wire.

My Issue Now: Yesterday the Zooz 26 three-way switch in the Kitchen stopped working. The light is on, but it no longer controls the lights. It's driving six led lights with 9 watts each. That should be far less than the rated load on the Zooz. My wife at this point is becoming frustrated with having her house not work, but I'm a bit gunshy to simply replace the Zooz without considering other options.

Please, throw rocks at my plan. What have I not thought of? I don't really want to replace all of the switches a third time unless someone simply tells me the Zooz is not suitable for this application.

Nest Cameras - Viewing Multiple Live on PC at Once

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 08:50 AM PDT

I'm looking at options for cameras/security in our house and I'm pretty settled on the Nest ecosystem. My biggest question that I can't really seem to find an answer to is can I run an app on PC and have all my cameras showing the live feed at one time? I don't really want to switch between cameras, I'd prefer to see all of them at once.

Bonus question, if I mount a tablet to my wall could I also have the same functionality?

    Thanks in advance!

Is there a chime that plugs into a wall that will also double as the power adapter for my Nest Hello? I do not have a transformer/chime I can wire into, but I would like to use a third party chime. Any suggestions?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 10:26 AM PDT

So I've ordered this ( Amazon link ), thinking surely I could find a wireless chime separately, but as it turns out, this does not exist for this, only for ring, so now i'm hoping there is a way for me to wire a chime into this as well, and since I only have a spot for two leads, it seems my only option is to find a chime that can also provide power, or somehow splice a chime into the power adapter, or something...

I really dunno what my options are. Any ideas?

    Thank you
