Recommendations for measuring power usage on NEMA 14-50

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:36 PM PST

I'd like to get a better integration for the power usage of my EV charger.

I'm currently thinking about something like the Shelly EM or something similar like this.

Then I saw these exist as breakers such as this one, which might mean a easier/cleaner install.

    Any thoughts / recommendations?

[Request] Classroom Automation help! Anything like this?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:13 PM PST

TLDR: What are my best options for automated customizable audio routines?

I've recently gotten into using Alexa routines in my home and (as a person with ADHD) it has helped my productivity, time management, and stress in immeasurable ways. Now, I don't do anything fancier than use songs and the custom "Alexa says" option to keep me on time with each part of the morning, but it's been a game changer for me.

I'm also a educator, and my unreliable internal clock often makes me look like the English Teachers I always made fun of in TV shows who get caught by the bell mid Shakespeare. And I never leave myself enough time to reset my room between classes.

I'd like to implement a similar system in my classroom that I use at home, but the Alexa routines (as best I understand them) don't seem to have all the functions I'm looking for. And God help me if I put an echo in my room with teenagers.

I'm looking for some sort of automation program/software/tool that can achieve as close to my ideal concept as possible: -Adding/ playing custom audio cues (A prefab voice is fine, but I'd prefer using my own custom recordings for a "bigger production" value.) -Web/Browser based (I'm unable to install anything on the school computers) -Complex Comands/easily adjustable time cues (some days we have an extended or shortened period, being able to adjust up or down without having to tweak the timing on every single file would be amazing.) -Access to some music library (Including a welcome song for the classroom, or a song to play during class changes would be a great aural way for me to keep track of time.) -Stop previous audio/song when a new command starts. (I don't want it to try and finish a four and a half minute song if my next alert is 3 minutes)

A hypothetical daily routine might look like

8:05 (Say "School begins in approximately minutes. Time to set the classroom." Play "Final Countdow by Europe.") 8:10 (Say "Bell will be ringing in approximately 1 minute." Play: "Good Morning from Singing in the Rain.")

8:15 (Say "Welcome, Period 1. Please set your bags down in the back and bring a chair to your spot. Attendance will be called in one minute." Play "Welcome to the Jungle by Guns and Roses" for 1 minute.)

9:37 (Audio cue: soft chime, Say: "Sorry to interrupt, this is your 10 minute reminder before class ends.)

9:45 (Audio cue: soft chime Say: "There are 2 minutes remaining in class. Stack up your chairs, put your notebooks away, and clear the floor of any trash or debris.")

9:46 (Say: "The bell will be ringing in less than a minute. You may line up at the door, and when the bell rings, head to your next destination." Play: "Under Pressure")

    9:51 (Say "Welcome, Period 2...)

    So on and so forth...

Any ideas? Is there something out there niche enough to do all this?

How to connect Wyze Cam v3 to power outside sideways sliding windows?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 09:32 PM PST

Has anyone figured a great way to get camera USB power outside of a window? I have a bunch of older sideways sliding windows and my Wyze USB cable is too thick to fit through and still allow the windows to close. Does everyone just resort to drilling holes in walls and caulking them up? Running long PoE runs outside and around a house? Wireless power through window glass? Something else?

Any ideas or suggestions people have would be super helpful!

Connect the same device to multiple assistants?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 08:54 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm slowly building up a collection of smart devices (Mostly Phillips Hue Lighting for now).

When I started, I had a Google Home Mini. Then I moved house, and it got buried in a box somewhere, so I set up an Echo dot I had laying around, and I also went to a lot more trouble this time around setting up routines and such. I can't really compare the Google Mini to the Echo Dot because I never really went to the trouble of learning to get the most out of the Mini.

And because I'm a Mac user (Computer, phone, and soon ipad), In also use Siri from time to time, and am sort of considering an Apple Homepod Mini, just for the integration. At the very least, it'd be cool to use my iOS devices to do things since I actually carry them with me and Siri is the easiest thing to access quickly.

    So, I'm just wondering:

    1. Out of Google, Alexa, and Apple Homekit for automation, which would you choose? And why? (And on another note, which assistant is the most useful and useable for everything else?)
    2. Is there any reason I can't connect everything to all 3? So that in my bedroom I say Hey Google, and in the Office I say Alexa. Will that cause issues? And do I have to set everything up 2 or 3 times? Or can you import routines from one platform to another?

    Switch for undercabinet lighting

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 02:50 PM PST

    Hello,

I just bought Inovelli's LZW45 Smart LED Strip lighting, with intention of using as undercabinet lighting in my kitchen. I am able to hide controller in one of the cabinets for a clean install.

I am curently using Smartthings/Alexa for other smarthome devices. I am wondering what everyone thinks the best option would be for a hardware on/off/dimmer switch compatible with what I already have.

Can you buy internal replacement parts for Hikvison cameras?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 01:11 PM PST

I have a few Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I cameras. Two of them have started looking like this. I think the IR filter is getting stuck. Sometimes I can tap the camera and it will move the filter so only half the screen looks pink.

Edit: Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll be investigating a workaround.

Simple Mount for UI G3 Flex Camera

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:35 PM PST

Simple Mount for UI G3 Flex Camera

I purchased a whole bunch of these camera's as the price is just right and the clarity of these are superb. I did not care for the few mounting options that came in the box and wanted to be able to mount and position them as I needed and also be able to change the viewing angle instead of just horizontal movement.

I purchased a box of generic cam mounts from Amazon and drilled a hole the same size as the screw at the end of the mount in the UI cam mount and came up with a great alternative. Check out my pic.

    Works like a charm

Allows the camera to move to any adjusted angle

Smart Bulb or Smart Switch for Outdoor Light?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:49 PM PST

I just bought a house and there is a light outside my back door (which we use to come in and out of the house).

To save money instead of getting a motion light (or I really would like a Nest version of the Ring Flood Light), I was thinking of getting either a smart light bulb or smart light switch to set the light on a timer. Any suggestions?

    DIY two-way audio

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:50 AM PST

We have to make our doorbell smart, adding a camera to it. I would like to have everything self-hosted and cloud-free. The problem is that we want to keep the doorbell that we already have (that only has 2 buttons and the place for a speaker) for various reasons. So DoorBird or Ubiquiti Doorbel are not options.

I already connected the buttons of our doorbell (and a the rele to open the gate) to a Shelly, so that part is already automatized. When someone presses the button, we receive a notification and we can open the gate (via Home Assistant, but I think this is not important).

The problem is that we cannot talk to who's at the door! An option could've been to use a two-way audio security camera on top of the doorbell, but I couldn't find any accettable PoE outdoor 2-way audio ONVIF camera out there (I know, lot of requirements!). So my idea was to buy a camera with all what I wanted except for 2-way audio (I already have one), and then just put a microphone, a speaker, and an Arduino inside the current doorbell (there is the space for everything) and integrate everything into a single thing. The question is: how? What could I use to integratee the video from the camera and the audio from the other source? Blue Iris? Jitsi? Something else?

My roommates are pissed that I keep forgetting to lock the door. Need a reminder to lock the door every time I (and only I) either enter or leave my house.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 11:46 AM PST

My roommates are really pissed at how much I forget to lock the door either after coming inside or leaving the house, as I've always lived in a house with a door that locked itself. Problem is most door sensors go off every time the door opens, and I want something that wouldn't go off when my roommates open it, only when I do.

Maybe something proximity based? I'm a total newbie to automation stuff but I absolutely love to learn so an ELI5 for anything would be great.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am in a rented apartment so I can't make any major structural changes, ie drilling holes in walls, changing out locks and such

Saw these at Home Depot and read they are a HD exclusive. Anyone have any experience?

    Mi Temp Sensors with Alexa

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:23 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

Does anyone know how to use these sensors so you can ask Alexa what the temperature is in a certain room? I've managed to get them connected via ESPhome in home assistant then linked home assistant to my Amazon Alexa which results in the temps showing in Alexa but If I ask my assistant "What's the temperature in the bathroom" for instance, it says "bathroom doesn't support that.

Is this a matter of me phrasing it wrong?

Still slowly jumping into HA and testing out some things before moving into our new house this summer. Ran across this vacuum on a deal and was considering picking it up as a proof of concept and to get the family used to the idea.

    Has anyone used it?

Is there a way to trigger Alexa’s speech with a Smartthings automation?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 08:34 AM PST

I currently have an automation in Smartthings to autolock the door after a delay if the door sensor is closed.

It works great, except that my wife has a heart attack every time the door autolocks and she's not expecting it because it sounds just like someone unlocking the door.

I'd like to announce that it's going to happen a few seconds before with Alexa, but it seems like the only way to get her to talk during a routine is by creating it in the Alexa app. I tried this, but it gets stuck in an infinite loop of Alexa saying "locking front door" if you close the door and lock it before she can, as you cannot set an additional IF condition that requires the door to be left unlocked (like you can in Smartthings).

So my question is: is there a way to trigger Alexa to say something in a Smartthings automation/smartapp or is there another way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

    Need help understanding Shelly relays

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 09:20 AM PST

Is there a breakdown of what each does? I want one relay that a can connect to HomeKit and just have the contact close for my 48vdc power supply to power some 2in led can lights.

I also want to monitor 240v load but their power monitoring diagram only shows monitoring of one leg of power. I'm in the US so 240 comes from 2 legs. Thanks

RJ45, Relays, WIFI & NFC - a jack od all trades Netio 4PZ

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:15 AM PST

    Howdy!

Stepping away from Sonoff devices for a moment to play with Netio PowerDIN for industrial applications. It's not marketed at home automation enthusiasts but perhaps it could fill one of your needs too. And this thing is feature-packed. It's not perfect, but it's a very interesting connected relay.

It mixes both dry contacts with traditional feed through relays, voltage metering and more.

I wrote some words about it if you are interested!

Looking for zigbee inwall light switch controller

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:54 AM PST

Like the title stats I'm looking for zigbee light controller. These points need to be fulfilled:

    • of course zigbee standard
    • inwall
    • dumb usage (even if my system crashes, they shall switch on/off)
    • dimmable

    Thanks in advance.

Options for controlling led light strip from windows?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 08:28 AM PST

I have those led strips attached to the back of my monitor that can be controlled with an IR remote for on/off and color change. What options are there for me to control the led strip from the computer? My goal is to change the color of the LED strip based on the state of my microphone (in-use, unused, muted).

My first instinct was to find a usb ir transceiver so I can simply learn the IR commands from the IR remote and just blast those commands back to the unit. But the age of IR seems to have long passed and many of these related companies are long gone. And even if I do get one, there may be issues getting the drivers and related software to work on the current version of windows.

Next I tried looking for some sort of hardware interface that would allow one to connect these standard led strips to it (ie four connectors for 5050 led strip) and allow it be to controlled via usb or maybe wifi. But no luck so far except for maybe some very custom DIY hardware.

I do not want to spend hundreds of dollars for something like a Philips HUE system just because I originally wanted to control a $15 light strip.

    Suggestions?

Has anyone been able to do this inexpensively? The systems I see to start remotely with your phone are STUPID money! There has to be a cheaper way with all the smart switches out there.

Edit: Guess I should have told you it's a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 sot it's not as sophisticated as a new car or Tesla! LOL
