Testing out my new PCB for the 'MorningRope'. It's a new curtain opener that's based on The Hook Up's "Motorized Smart Curtains - DIY or Buy?" video. It allows you to motorize your existing curtain rod in a really compact package. But it can also be used for motorizing nearly anything else.

Good Smartthings LED Strip that has lots of options or scenes

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 04:32 AM PST

Specifically, I'm trying to put a LED strip into a hardware store LED diffuser to create a smart lightbar. I will control it with smartthings.

I also want to turn it into a 'progress bar' for countdowns and sunrise routines. Preferably controllable via Smartthings, but I don't mind working with OEM apps.

Any confirmed SAFE to use smart thermostats for a two wire HVAC system?

Honeywell seems to maybe be the only safe option though ht seems many HEAVILY dislike the app.

Looking for any and all input.

Z-wave or Zigbee outlets where both plugs are controllable & have energy monitoring?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:38 PM PST

I am looking for a Z-wave or Zigbee wall outlet where both plugs are controllable and both have energy monitoring. Does this exist? It seems every one that I look at only has control/energy monitoring on one of the two plugs. Alternatively, I would be happy to use Z-wave or Zigbee plugs as long as 2 will fit on one outlet and they have energy monitoring capabilities.

I am not interested in Wi-Fi plugs, I only use Wi-Fi in my smart home setup for cameras.

Undercabinet Lighting Wish List...Does the Perfect Solution Exist?

Undercabinet Lighting Wish List...Does the Perfect Solution Exist?

I'm renovating and need to choose the correct undercabinet lighting. All lighting will be hardwired/ direct wired and each zone (noted in different colors) will have separate wall switches operating independent of each other. I'd also like the ability to control the various zones with my phone. Below is my wish list. Does anyone know if there's a lighting solution that has most or all features? I'm open to all feedback. Thanks.

    • Hardwired fixtures
    • Slim or flat design
    • Dimmable
    • Color temperature control (warm/ cool/ daylight/ etc.) - Not too concerned with colors beyond white but not against it either.
    • Wall switch compatible
    • Smart enabled (phone app, voice, etc.)
    • All 4 areas can be controlled independently, grouped together as one, or a combination of zones
    • Works with Google and Apple
    • Remembers settings - I've read some have issues with lights resetting to factory or max brightness after being turned off.

It seems like there are a few ways to approach this given different wireless technologies and smart switches but I struggle finding the correct physical fixture (or light strip with diffuser panel/ housing) and then deciding on the best way to wirelessly control. ***I'd be totally content with non-smart wall control so long as I could manage all of the features from my phone. The ability to flip the switch on the wall (for my entire family) and have them work without opening an app or using voice commands is important.

Are strips better than fixtures? Are diffusers generally preferred?

I'm certain I don't want the uneven light disbursement of pucks.

I'm open to a system requiring a hub but not really interested in a hub that only controls those lights (i.e. Feit Electric). If going the hub route, I'd like it to control ceiling fans (not yet sure if the fans will have lights built in).

Its maybe worth noting that the lighting under the kitchen island is not a priority and I haven't thought that all of the way through. Just thought it would be a cool effect.

    Thanks!

Cheapest way to keep cats off the counter?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:08 PM PST

My kitten learned to jump on the counters .... Yayyyyyyy :|

What is the cheapest device I can buy (?motion sensor power strip?) to activate when it senses her and turns on a device for 5 sec's (radio with the volume on Max, mp3 player, .... anything)

** EDIT: want a low cost alarm or sensor. For example Infrared beam alarm just not sure it would work on smaller surfaces .. like a table/counter

Question,What to do about Smartthings Hub

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 03:26 PM PST

So I'm just diving down into the home automation black hole and I wanted to start somewhere easy. I thought that getting a Smartthings hub would help integrate the Chinly, Lifx, Lutron, Harmony Elite and Meross smart plugs I currently have. I just found out that Smartthings Hubs are not available in Canada. Is there an alternative? The company that is now making the Smartthings hub, Aeotec, doesn't seem to have it available in Canada and there is no indication that it will in the near future. I'm at a loss, any help would be great. Please keep in mind I have looked into Home Assistant and similar products and they seem to far above my head right now.

    Starting in home automation

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 03:25 PM PST

Hi everyone, thanks for all your ideas in this sub, it has helped me understand a little bit better how this whole automation works.

I still have many questions about it and trying to be cheap while automating doesn't help as I can't find complete information about the items that I want to conjugate.

Currently, I'm remodeling a 2-floor, three-bedroom, two-bathroom and open space living room, dining, and a small kitchen house with an exterior terrace and separate garage.

What I have currently: Alexa; Aqara Sensor Kit & a Xiaomi 360 Camera. (Aditional things that I have: Raspberry Pi 2b+ and Ethernet RJ45 cables in every room of the house).

What I would like to have in the future (but don't know jack):

    • Tablet - to control everything (turning on and off lights, answering the door with video feed, watching the exterior cameras' feed, controlling music, controlling scenarios (or scenes), opening and closing blinds, turning on and off the Aqara alarm);
    • Sonoff or Shelly modules inside the dumb wall switches - to turn on and off lights and create scenarios;
    • A cheap doorbell with video that connects to the tablet;

What I would like to know:

    • How can I watch a live feed from outside the home wifi (from work for example)?
    • How can I set my Aqara alarm to send me a notification from outside the network and prompt me to watch the live feed from my cameras?
    • What should be the minimal specs of the Tablet to control everything without lagging?
    • If I have two dumb switches doing stair commutation, do I need a wifi commutation module as well or do I just need one wifi module connected to one of the switches? (I want to maintain my dumb switches without replacing them for wifi ones).

When I have everything done in this project I would like to try to do a step-by-step on how to connect everything and how everything works so I can answer the same questions that others may have as well.

    Thanks in advance!

C by GE becoming Cync (Savant)

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 03:07 PM PST

    https://www.gelighting.com/c-by-ge-is-becoming-cync

Any thoughts if this is going in the right direction?

New app, new products, new "works with Cync"?

Savant is mid-high end automation I believe? Seems their "works with Cync" means there will be more stuff from other mfg but I hope that their ecosystem will talk better with others.

I read here that C by GE doesn't play nice with Home Assistant, Smart Things, etc. You always have to use the app.

    Your thoughts?

Opinion needed... Is facial/person recognition feasible yet for task automation?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 08:49 PM PST

I have a family member with Alzheimers that lives with us and that requires making adjustments for their lack of cognition while trying not to feel like you're making things inconvenient for yourself, which has me looking into automation.

For instance I've been considering putting an electromagnetic lock on the knife drawer. Why an electromagnetic lock you might ask... Interestingly enough there aren't very many (if any) childproof options out there that can handle the strength of a determined adult.

Obviously I can use a switch or RFID reader, but I was wondering if tech has progressed to the point that I could use a camera that was trained to identify that one person and allow the automation to respond accordingly... ie if they are in the kitchen the knife drawer automatically locks, otherwise it functions normally.

Is the current camera/identification tech accurate & feasible enough at this point to be able to accomplish something like this?

How to handle the differences in color between different brands of smart lights? Sengled vs Sylvania+ etc...

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:42 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm hoping I'm in the right place for this, as I haven't found anything online specific to my case here. I have an LED strip above my TV in my living room built ins, and also a backlight bar behind the TV.

This problem applies to different areas of the house, but since these two lights are right next to each other, this is my main concern. When I select colors in SmartThings or Google Home for these two lights (grouped as a pair), each light seems to have it's own "version" of the color I chose. Very rarely do the colors match perfectly by using this method. For example - if I choose red for both lights, the Sylvania+ LED strip tends to be more pink than red, but the Sengled Light Bar actually is red.

What is the best way to mitigate this mismatch and is there a way to fix it?

    Thanks!

Help modernizing my vintage gate alarm

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 09:55 AM PST

Hi all, my house was built in the 1950's which came with all sorts of vintage smart home solutions I've been working to modernize over time.

The next one I'm looking to update is an open / closed alarm for the front gate. It was originally designed to be controlled by a light switch in the garage about 100ft away. If the switch is on and the gate is opened, a button behind the gate is depressed, and a classic A/C powered bell rings in the garage above the switch.

The gate is exposed to the elements and out of the wireless range of the house, so I've ruled out using a simple wireless sensor. Instead, I'm planning to have an electrician remove or bypass the switch and bell, then use the existing wiring from the gate to the garage (without current) to connect a smart sensor.

I'll probably need the electrician to confirm, but my best guess is that the existing gate button just completes the circuit for the bell so it rings when the switch is on.

Are there any Zigbee or Z-wave devices out there which could act as an open / closed sensor based on the continuity of attached wires? Since there wouldn't be any live current, I'm open to hacking apart a cheap sensor to connect it if needed, but I haven't been able to find one that works on a physical connection instead of a magnet.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice!

Roborock security/setup - guest network enough?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:36 AM PST

Just got my first robo vacuum (s5 Max) thanks to many hours of research on this sub and a great cyber monday deal.

I'm holding off on setup until I can figure out the optimal privacy config, and there seems to be some conflicting opinions from what I've seen - especially between this sub and the roborock sub.

Is it good enough to just create a guest network for only the roborock to use? I don't care so much about sending my apt layout data to china, but I also would rather not as long as I can avoid it without losing functionality.

Any thoughts on this or other tips for setup/ownership in general would be greatly appreciated.

Hue + Tradfri - how does it work?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:06 AM PST

Hello, so I'm still kind of new to the whole home automation jazz as I do lack some experience with different brands. I currently have some hue bulbs and a hue lightstrip and I want to slowly work towards changing most of the bulbs in our house. I am considering buying tradfri GU10 bulbs into my hallway as hue GU10 bulbs are just a tad bit too expensive, considering how many of those we'd have to get into our hallway. I am also using homekit as I want everything to be controlable through it. I have a couple questions tho:

    1) Is tradfri actually any good?

    2) I would like to use a motion sensor in the hallway, but I've heard that the Tradfri sensor is rubbish. Is it true? And if so, which one should I get? Would the bue sensor work ok with the tradfri lights? (I'd like to create a bit more advanced automations with some rules, preferably through homekit)

    3) Should I buy a tradfri hub as well or would a raspberry pi setup with homebridge running 24/7 work just fine and would this solution actually be reliable? I don't want a solution which will just not work from time to time.

Btw if you have any ideas or anything really, I will be glad for any comments related to this, as I want to do it right 👍

    Thank you

NFC tag that toggles on and off the smart LED strip

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:37 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am trying to control my LED strip lights that are connected to the Google Home app and the "Smart Life" app using NFC tags. I know that iOS has Home automation and shortcut apps that makes it super simple to do this. However, I am on Andriod and was wondering how can I do this on my Google Pixel?

    Thank you

Mi Home - Area Editor can't split room

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:53 AM PST

Hi, I've got a problem with the Xiaomi Vacuum Mop Pro, or rather, the app Mi Home.

When setting up the areas I noticed that the wall in the middle of my home isn't recognized as an "empty" space with a proper wall for the editor to end the divisions by. Check out the Imgur album below, the red box represents the area that I want defined as the kitchen. The yellow box points to the wall mentioned previously. The two pictures after those demonstrate that I can't divide the room properly since the cut goes all the way to the end of the house.

It's quite annoying since this means that I can't define any meaningful rooms in my home. Cutting twice around the kitchen and merging the two parts doesn't work either, since the editor doesn't allow for cuts through two rooms

    Images:https://imgur.com/a/RQuvHN5

Edit: To be very clear, the wall in the middle (yellow box, see pictures) isn't recognized as an empty space by the vacuum and therefore can't catch the line when dividing rooms, the line that cuts/divides just goes right through it. There is no way of shortening this dividing line when in the area editor, the line continues until it hits a wall, which it doesn't on this one wall. I can't be the only one with this issue? It registers other closed off spaces properly?

    LED strip coding

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:07 AM PST

    Hey guys,

i was wondering if its possible to code LED strip WiFi control from Ali to individually control LEDs and add new functions to it.

For example like in this: https://youtu.be/9uTuZoc1qvQ?t=258

I have this controller with MagicHome app on my phone: https://m.imgur.com/a/l446zvF

Or is it possible only with the arduino thing?

[FIRST PROJECT]Got a smartplug, want it to tun on or off based on laptop battery.

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:50 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I just got an Meross Smartplug and i wanted to turn it on or off based on my laptop battery state. Turn on at 20% and off at 80%.

But i dont really know how to achieve that, the Meross app only works on mobile and so i have no idea how to start implementing it.

The only way i kind of thought of doing it was sending a notification on my phone when my battery reaches 20% (using maybe Join) and then have Tasker act from there and somehow toggle the switch. But is there an easier way?

Could anyone help me or give pointers how to get started?

    Thank you

Smart locks with native HomeKit and HomeAssistant support?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:48 AM PST

I feel like this shouldn't be such a difficult question to answer — but are there any smart locks on the market (or even announced) that simultaneously support native connections to both HomeKit and HomeAssistant?

We are moving into a new home where I'll be using both technologies, but I haven't entirely figured out what role each will play in the environment. It would be really nice to have one device that can work with both without depending on the other.

I'm totally fine with using something like a wifi bridge for one of the functionalities, if that's required. My preference would be for something that works without a cloud connection.

Trigger event when power outlet goes on or off

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:24 AM PST

I have set up the lamps in my room with HomeKit and can control them using my smartphone. This really well.

In my wall, I have a switch which controls a portion of power outlets in my room. Before I used smart lights, I had my lamps plugged in directly to these switches to control the lights.

Now with my smart lights, I can't use the switch anymore. Actually, I can since I don't have plugged my lamps to the plugs connected to the switch, but pressing the switch simply has no effect since nothing's connected to them.

Installing a smart switch is not an option for now. Therefore, I had the idea of triggering an event in HomeKit every time the controlled plugs go either on or off. My idea now is to connect an old android phone to the controlled plugs and use IFTTT to trigger a webhook on my homebridge installation every time the battery of the phone either starts or stops charging. That would work, but if the switch is off for too long the battery of my phone would run out, causing the switch to stop working until it is charged again.

Does anyone have an idea what else I could do to trigger an event every time the state of my power outlet changes?
