    120"+ motorized outdoor blackout blind?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 07:48 PM PST

I live in a part of Bc, Canada that can get very windy.

My 4th floor tiny condo could use blackout blinds, and putting them outside on the balcony saves me very valuable room presently used for a projector screen inside.

Recommended approaches to have a solution that will tye well into future home automation efforts and has some way to not get whipped around by the wind if it's in the "down" position?

    Qolsys IQ panel 2 plus

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 08:45 PM PST

Hey guys. So I'm having a little confusion with the Qolsys IQ panel 2 plus that was recently installed with my home. This, along with some other components, make it a "smart home". There's some z-wave switches and locks along with security sensors. They also installed Honeywell thermostats (1 for each floor) that integrate to the Qolsys panel. To top it off, the panel also works with the Alarm.com app and everything is integrated into one set location for quick viewing and control. This makes it super easy for others, aka my wife, to know what's going on with the house. Great!

The problem I have is with the thermostats. They do not have sensors that can be installed to assist it. I've previously had the Ecobee and I've liked how it operates but Qolsys doesn't work with Ecobee or Nest.

So, the question I have is does anyone else have this panel and how do they address this? Is it possible to have 2 thermostats installed, on the same wiring, but only have the Ecobee or Nest controlling it and the Honeywell working as a "monitor or display" that is integrating the data to the Qolsys panel?

Yeelight Aurora Plus vs the 1S model?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:48 PM PST

Hello, I've been considering buying one of these strips together with a few extensions for it, yet I can't quite decide which one to choose. Besides RGB I'm also interested in having white light and the older Aurora seems to lack an option for white tones in the Yeelight app while the new 1S seems to have this. Would this be just a matter of software or does the older light strip lack white LED's? As for the extensions, they are all from the older Aurora gen, so in case this is a hardware limitation, I can assume that the extensions would be unable to show white tones like the 1S?

    Home Life app substitute?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:19 PM PST

Is there a substitute app for the Home Life one that will allow you to create your own "scenes" for your lights. I have a bunch of A19's I want to have more control over, such as how quickly/slowly they change or like another app, how they respond to sound/music from your phone (which also has the app on it) . TIA

Is it possible to have two hubs controlling the same z-wave device?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 07:51 PM PST

As the title states, is it possible to have a Nexia and Smart Things hub manage my Z-wave Schlage door locks?

I plan to install two Aeotec Range Extender 7's (Nexia says they don't support, but "should work".) Was having lots of drop offs with Nexia, but would like try both and make an informed decision.

    Thanks

    Rick

Question.... I’m having problems with my wifi

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 07:20 PM PST

Just starting. Added a bunch of WiFi switches. Now, my wifi is dropping out a bunch.

    1) I turned off 5GHz to hook up the switches. Can I turn it back on after they are connected?

    2) is there some with adding 10-12 switches that would be causing my wifi to crash?

Confused as to why my router needs to be restarted all the time now

    Thanks

Help on Smart Switches and Fans

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 05:33 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

In the process of doing a renovation and I will be installing new ceiling fans in several rooms. The fans will be WiFi connected and compatible w Alexa/Google themselves. My question is: should I also put them on a smart light switch? All of the fans will be tied to their own single switch which will power the fan, and then you use either voice or remote to adjust speed/light levels. Having the smart switch would allow me to shut all power off to the fixture by voice/phone, but is it necessary?

Smart control for Garage Door Opener Lights

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:46 PM PST

    Hey all

Is there a solution to add smart control to an existing garage door opener, specifically for the lights on the device? I have a Meross Garage door opener and it works great, but it nor any other device I have found, seem to be able to remotely control the lights on the opener.

Is there a limitation somewhere that prevents it? I tried the MyQ opener as well and it too only controls the door.

In our garage we have a wall control with a light and a door button. The 2 wires from the control feed into the same 2 slots that the meross uses. If the wall button can control the light, why not the meross?

Does anyone have a solution for making the lights in an opener smart controlled?

    Thanks!

August Smartlock + Hue integration vs HomeKit automation

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 03:37 PM PST

My August Smart lock has an option to integrate with Philips Hue where it will turn on my lights in my garage when I unlock the door. I could also create an automation through HomeKit. Which is the preferred method?

    Alert when Door is Open

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 02:51 PM PST

I'm looking for a WIFI door sensor that would push an alert after X minutes to my phone if a door remains open. I would prefer not to get a alert every time the door opens and closes. Any suggestions? This is for our guest house - making sure guests close the doors in the winter/summer and not leave them open when unattended.

    Thanks!

Are there any home energy meters that communicate with zigbee? The closest I can find is an Aeotec product that uses z-wave

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:39 PM PST

I'm looking for a product that can monitor my whole house's energy usage and communicate via zigbee, since that's what all my other devices use. So far the best I can find this this product which looks ideal except for using z-wave.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

Ring Security as Z-Wave Hub Question?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:13 PM PST

Hello All, I wanted to see if anyone has paired Zooz On/Off switches with their Ring Security System. I understand that the Ring Security is technically a hub in itself but with limited compatability. Will I need a dedicated z-wave hub, or is Ring sufficient for 3 Zooz switches?

I have seen some say No and some say Yes, so I'm looking for first hand experience with z-wave switches.

[Problem] Zigbee button won't go to pairing mode

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 11:24 AM PST

I bought this zigbee button set, and to get it to pairing mode I should press the bottom left button for 10 seconds and it would start blinking and be ready to pair. However, after the 10 seconds, the blinking only lasts for a few moments and it thurns off. Can anyone help me fix this? Video of the problem

Philips hue turning on when I enter the room question

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:58 AM PST

Hey I've dabbled in Hue system, and have a dimmer and some bulbs. Moving to a new space and want to be able to enter the room and have the phone in my pocket or whatever other means to trigger lights turning on in a room if it's after say 6pm. I assume it's doable, I'm wondering if I need to buy a hub for that functionality?

Voice activation i'm a bit meh about, i could just put a switch at the enterance and hit the button, but it'd be nice if it just went off on it's own when I enter the room since it's an office.

If anyone cares to share their methods for achieving something similar and clarify if I need a hub or what not to pull that off I'd love to hear it.

    New home Smart Switch recommendations

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:27 AM PST

Hello, I have an appointment with the electrician to discuss options for our new home tomorrow. I do have a variety of smart switches and plugs in my current home (kasa, lutron, cheap ones I got off Amazon etc...). I recently bought the newer echo that has a built in Zigbee hub. Are there any brand/specific switch recommendations for a consistent smart switch solution in a new home? Should I get Zigbee compatible switches or does it not matter? I was told on this subreddit before it's better to have a dedicated frequency for the smart devices which something like Zigbee would provide.

    I appreciate any thoughts!
