Today I Lobotomized My Smart Home

My wife and I recently went under contract on a new house, so my setup of almost 5 years needed to be removed to keep all my devices safe from the unwashed masses that may soon inhabit this house.

My home is now as dumber than my grandmother's. I must barbarically touch light switches (with my hands!) to turn them on, and what's worse is I must remember to turn them off.

My poor house's consciousness will be uploaded to another home soon enough, but in the meantime I will drag my knuckles and grunt like the caveman I am.

I see many posts about people creating new setups, but has anyone had a similar experience moving a smart home or taking out large quantities of in-wall devices?

I found some of my old home automation tech in the basement. How do I integrate this with my Home Assistant server? :-P

Zigbee smart light switch seen as an end device?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 09:54 PM PST

    Hi there,

I just replaced all my wall mounted light switch with Tuya wall-mounted light switch (the no neutral version) and run Home Assistant. I live in a fairly big appartment where 2.4Ghz coverage is an issue, and I was relying on the mesh network to get a good coverage.

Now, since I have smart switches (connected to the main power) in each room, I was kind of expecting it to act as a router network. However Home Assistant sees these devices as end devices, and my zigbee network coverage only spans throughout less than half of the apartment. I am now using Hue bulbs to acts as routers, with a very poor experience since as soon as they are shut down using the wall switch, no routing happens at all.

I read that all plugged Zigbee devices would pretty much act as routers. Am I mistaken here? Also, I almost never find that information on the product page of plugged Zigbee devices before purchasing. Pretty hard making an informed decision! I intend to deploy a couple smart plugs here and there to act as repeaters. Is this the most cost effectice solution?

Thank you so much for your help

sensors and power plugs with http api

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 12:31 AM PST

Hey guys, I have a house with all the lighting and window sun screens hooked up via wired KNX. To be able to access (web ui) and script all that I have Wiser to KNX. This thing basically allows me to program it to send email, persist data so I can retrieve it with FTP and do http/tcp/udp requests and process the responses.

What I don't have are indoor/outdoot temperature sensors. Now I know I can buy KNX ones and hook these straight into the system, but I'd like to do this wireless and do it myself (for KNX stuff I need to have my electrician to come over). As a plus I'd like to control power plugs based on that data with the system.

For sensors these seem to fit mee requirements:

https://store.wirelesstag.net/collections/all these seem to upload to a website where you can get the data using a http api which seems perfect, anyone have any experience with these? Is the api free?

Power plugs seem a bit harder as my system needs to send a signal to them rather then retrieve the data. Anyone have any ideas?

oh and I'm based in the EU and noticed many of these products are only available in the US

    Smart home services

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 11:35 PM PST

I've been working in the commercial hvac field as a service tech for close to 7 years. I've been interested in starting a smart home services business as I am proficient in bms and building automation. Is there a market for these services or am I jumping the gun? I feel like home automation is going to explode in the near future and I want to get in on the boom. Good or bad idea to start a small business in that field?

What is your recommended hub for someone entering home automation? With Samsung is existing Smartthings to Aeotec.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:44 PM PST

It seems that Samsung is existing Smartthings, with Aeotec taking over, which is why you can't find and ST hubs. I've looked at Wink but the reviews are mixed.

I have a zigbee hub built into my Eero Pro 6s but the Schlage smart locks for zigbee do not allow for remote code changes/additions/removals or usage alerts. I returned those and am exploring other options but know I need a good home automation hub at the center.

Would love to hear recommendations from the community and not bloggers writing SEO lists for affiliate sales over real data.

How could I make my house do something like this?? Press a red button, lights turn off, disco turns on, jams music and lights for 10 seconds, then goes back to previous state.

Does something exist that goes behind a dumb, UK 2 gang light switch to make it smart?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 01:08 PM PST

    Hiya,

Every bulb in our house is zigbee/smart apart from our kitchen downlighting! Really couldn't afford smart down lights at the time but now regretting it.

Does something exist that can be wired in behind a normal light switch to make it smart? Don't care about dimming.

Thanks for your inevitable helpful replies

Device to use for physical button switch?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 09:10 AM PST

Hello! I am looking to wire some push button switches to control a couple of sonoff or other devices through homeassistant.

Basically I want to use some keystone momentary switches to control lights, speakers etc on my desk.

Can you give me an idea of what device I need (for e.g. 4 switches) and some basic switch wiring advice?

Has anyone had a consistent, positive experience with C by GE? Is Hue any better?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:43 PM PST

I bought my first home a few months ago and decided to reasonably invest in some smart home products - not as far enough as setting up a Home Assistant server, but buying basic off-the-shelf consumer stuff and using it with my Amazon Echos/Alexa around the house.

In my ecosystem I have C by GE Direct Connect color light bulbs, and a C by GE motion sensor dimmer and a paired switch.

    • Admittedly the Direct Connect lightbulbs are the only things that have worked correctly, consistently. However..
    • The Android app forgets my identity quite frequently and I have to keep logging in, again and again, which makes it a pain to configure or control outside of Alexa
    • The app fails to connect to my devices. I know it's not a device issue, as I still have Alexa control over them
    • The motion sensor switch turns itself on all the time. Nothing gets your adrenaline going like your downstairs lights on a motion sensor suddenly turning on at 3 in the morning. This happens at every level of motion sensitivity offered
    • The motion sensor also decides to turn the lights off whenever I'm in the room. It's supposed to auto-turn off after 5 minutes of no motion (fixed length, not configurable).

I can't get away from the GE switch as no one else makes a 3 pole dimmer smart switch with motion, although I am strongly considering to a non-motion Treatlife switch and moving to Hue lights so I don't have to deal with the horrendous app either. Are the apps for Treatlife and Hue any better? Do their products work correctly and consistently?

Connect multiple sirens with Z-wave panic buttons (wall switch)

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:58 PM PST

I need three or four Z-wave wall buttons around my house, that when pressed will trigger multiple extremely loud siren alarms connected around the house as well.

I'd like all the sirens to go off same time, I can probably wire them in parallel to a single relay?

The purpose is to provide panic alarm due to high target for break-in. We already have 20+ cameras but the sirens if gut wrenching loud enough is more likely to get them to run. We've seen 5+ armed men enter homes and tie up owners, ignoring cameras.

I would love to get feedback on the loudest sirens, they don't need to be Z-wave so long as I can do a Z-wave relay and wire multiple sirens in parallel.

I also could use feedback on the right wall switches to trigger a scene? I assume I can place same switches around house triggering same scene without issues.

Ultimate goal is to get Home Assistant integration so I can instantly trigger WhatsApp messaging, text messages, and Google Home keyword trigger like "hey google, emergency!"

Best Value Contact Sensor that has a replaceable battery and works with Alexa?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 10:20 AM PST

Basically, want a relatively cheap contact sensor with those features so I can turn off the lights when I close the door to my closet.

Edit: Found this. I have a Bong Bridge for 433 hz remotes. Would Bond work with this and then show the device on Alexa?

Looking for recommendations for a robot vacuum.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:52 PM PST

Well I finally decided to bring my question to reddit. We received a robot vacuum for Christmas. It didn't have smart features, or advanced mapping functions. My parents, said "oh let's return it for one that works better"

So for the past month, I've been trying to do as much research on robot vacuums. To be honest there are so many options, choices and different wordings for the same "features".

I'm attempting to find a robot vacuum that has the following features for $300 or less if possible.

    Google Home integration.

LDS mapping: From what I understand this is the best form of navigation, if I'm wrong please educate me haha.

A reliable vacuum, as I'm not hoping to replace it within a year.

Not loud enough to wake the dead.

Now that the feature list is done, let me describe my house. It's roughly 1500 Sq foot that's only 1 floor. 1100 Sq feet is hardwood floors. The remaining are carpet, but those two rooms will more than likely be manually vacuumed. I have one cat that leaves enough hair on the floors to make another cat lol. That's all I can think of at the moment.

If I've left out any info that is needed for recommendations or am misunderstanding some of the features I mentioned. Please let me know, as I do enjoy being educated on these things.

    Thank you all in advance.

How to start automating an apartment

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:03 AM PST

Hey everyone, I am looking for guidance on how I can automate within my apartment. Being in an apartment means I obviously can't install anything permanent. As of right now, I would like to have some smart plugs connected to lights and smart lightbulbs. I really like having buttons to control lights (like on a remote), but that doesn't seem to be an option with smart lights. I currently have an Alexa that I use for a smart bulb. One problem I have with this is that if my wifi cuts out, I can't turn on/off my lights. Is there anyway around that? I am getting confused about whether I need a hub for what I want to do. For now, the goal is to have lights/plugs with one easy to use central place to control them, not totally dependent on wifi and possibly the ability to have manual remotes. Is all of this possible? Please help me get started! Thank you

On air / on call smart signage for Zoom calls

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:09 PM PST

So obviously WFH and planing to do so for the foreseeable my company has taken to it really well.

I'm on about 6-8 meetings a day, my home office is setup so from my desk I have a view.from my window but this means my camera faces the door so my wife.comes in while I'm on calls and it bothers her as she's like to know when I'm on a call…

So my idea was old Android tablet linked.to a webpage in kiosk mode, then sonoff button when I'm on a call I hit the button the screen shows on a call,.when I'm done hit the button again shows im free.

So… Anyone got any ideas how to go about this?

    Looking for inspiration

Merkury bulbs / geenie app .. custom scenes?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:34 AM PST

Hey guys. I bought merkury color changing bulbs for the two lamps in my living room and loving it so far, but I have a question I need help with...

On the color options they have several different "scenes" most are solid colors but there are a few with oscillating colors,

Rave - blinks off and on with red light Blink - changes from red green and blue every second. Rainbow - smoothly fades between all the colors.

While I love these settings, there has to be a way to program my own... Like just changing from red to yellow to create a fire effect.

Anyone know how to do this in the geenie app, or better yet reccoment an app comparable with the bulbs that allows for custom animated lights... I'm on Android btw.

Outdoor Gate Sensor with Ring Contact Sensor

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:57 PM PST

Outdoor Gate Sensor with Ring Contact Sensor

I've been trying to find an outdoor sensor gate I could integrate with my smart home that was cheap and easy to replace. I tried a Samsung multipurpose sensor with Vaseline and Sarane Wrap that I saw online, but eventually the rain got to the sensor and ruined it over 6 months.

I replaced it with one of the Gen 2 ring contact sensors and this waterproof enclosure: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PI6P3MG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 You do have to grind the box a bit, but its a great size and the external mounting tabs make it easy to mount to your gate. I also really like that the magnet side of the ring sensor has mounting holes so you can screw to the gate rather than rely on double sided tape that doesn't work great on wet wood. I have this connected through my ring alarm and it works great. Now I get notified anytime someone goes through the gate which is great piece of mind with little kids. I also have the alarm do a unique chime for this sensor to make it obvious if we're inside.

Turn on lights when (non-smart) TV comes on

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:55 AM PST

Hi all. I'm new to IFTTT but learning quickly. My goal is for my Govee Immersion lights to turn on/off with my (non-smart) TV. I believe the only way is through smart plugs? But I really don't want to have to use an app to turn on a smart plug, to turn on my tv. Here's what I'm thinking but I don't even know if it's possible. A smart plug that's always on. Tv plugged into it. When tv is turned on, power level being used in the plug increases and triggers an event to turn on the lights. Is this possible? If so, do I need a special smart plug? Thanks so much in advance.

    Brilliant Control and Honeywell Redlink

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 09:51 AM PST

    Brilliant Control and Honeywell Redlink

I bought a Brilliant Control to test as a light switch/thermostat combo for my home. I have a Mitsubishi mini-split running 5 zones. So each room would get the brilliant control with light switches and and LCD panel. Problem is it won't communicate with Honeywell Redlink devices. It will communicate with Honeywell Smart Thermostats...but that is kinda silly. I have Redlink.. My phone can set control the thermostats...as can Alexa... but not this brilliant control. Any ideas on a workaround? It is actually pretty slick. Connects to my Ring camera stuff. And works as an alexa end-point. But it sucks as Redlink controller. I hope #resideo is monitoring here. And #brilliant.
