Bought an LED strip light that uses an rf remote, wondering if there's any way to integrate it with my Google assistant/android phone?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 12:38 PM PST

The light was ordered off a Facebook ad, but I figured the remote would be IR, which I could use my smart ir blaster to control. Is there anything like a smart or blaster but for RF remotes? Or is there some way to get my phone or PC's wifi card to communicate with it? Unfortunately there's no obvious branding on the light so unfortunately I couldn't even say who makes the thing. I'm not expecting it to be possible, but I figure if it is, this community would know how it's done! Thanks in advance.

are the shelly 2.5 the best solution for switching a 220v tile warmer & 220v towel warmer ?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 03:53 PM PST

    good evening,

as title says, i have these two electrical "appliances" i want to control, and since it's 2021 it's cheaper to get a shelly 2.5 two-pack than it is to get a single traditional timer that can handle 220v.

obviously the other contender is sonoff, but i want the controller installed in a 4 square box in the wall, and the sonoff don't appear to be intended for that use. plus, shelly is UL listed.

just looking for some second opinions on whether shelly is the best option here. i've heard their interface isn't too pretty, but that doesn't concern me as long as it's functional.

    https://www.amazon.com/Shelly-2-5Double-Wireless-Automation-Application/dp/B08J3QP1SG/

being able to set independent schedules for the towel warmer and the tile warmer are the appeal of the 2.5 VS the shelly 1.

    any advice appreciated :)

Turn off the aircon when door is open

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:01 PM PST

    Dear users,

I have research a lot on the internet but didn't find an answer...I hope you can help me.

I have my aircon controlled by "Nature remo" app. Nature Remo is kind of an IR controller. The app is link with Google Home. Work perfectly.

I want to buy a door open sensor. When the window is open for 10 sec for example, it will turn off the aircon.

There's a lot of brand, I don't why to buy a thing that will not work with my stuff.

    Thanks in advance,

Smart light strip, or dumb light strip with smart plugs?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 02:46 PM PST

I am a newbie. I currently have some Ring devices, Gosund smart plugs, and Alexa through the new echo hub.

My goal is to light my kitchen under cabinets with warm light LED strips in a way that I can voice command and schedule on/off for them. Outlets are readily accessible in this area of the house.

Is there a reason that I should try and find a warm light LED strip that is smart enough to do this on its own instead of more smart plugs? IS there even a warm light smart strip that exists and works with Alexa/zigbee? Let me know, thanks!

    Fireplace Switch

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 12:23 PM PST

New to home automation so any help is appreciated.

I have a switch on the wall that has 2 settings on and off. It controls my electric fireplace on and off. I was looking to control this switch wirelessly so i could turn it on and off with voice commands through google.

Is a simple cheap wifi smart switch doable for this? I see alot of people using smart switches for lights not fireplaces. Does this matter? Any reccomended switches?

    Thanks alot for any info

EDIT - One thing i added was that its an electeic fireplace im not sure if some people were thinking its gas.

    WiFi Sensors for Outdoor Garden?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 02:59 PM PST

Anyone have experience with sensors for your OUTDOOR garden? Like if I want continuous data on soil moisture, or humidity, or light levels?

If possible, looking to avoid something I have to connect my phone to, or something with its own proprietary protocol. Would love to just set the sensors up to talk to my home WiFi and watch the data roll in.

Alert or indicator for manual door locks?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:58 AM PST

Hi all - hoping your expertise may help. I have 8 entry doors to my house and they are all heavily used. I'd like to create an indicator to notify me when one of the doors is unlocked. None of my deadbolts are "smart" and I find that buying 8 smart locks would be very expensive.

My one idea is to have a sensor of some sort at each door which trips an led for either red/green when it's locked or not.

The other option is to have one smart bulb in the house run some sort of automation when it sees all doors are locked and change color.

My lack of knowledge about how to execute this is where I'm turning to you! Do y'all have any advice or possibly a better option?

I do have a big HomeKit setup, and also I can enable Alexa if that would be part of a solution.

Thanks for any help or ideas!!

Will a Sonoff BASICZBR3 ZigBee Switch Module extend the Zigbee Range?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:39 AM PST

    Hi

As per title, I added a ZBR3 today and had to move the Sonoff Zigbee hub for it to connect. I want to add another ZBR3 which is even further from the hub, so will the ZBR3 I've installed now extend the range or am I going to need to buy more hubs?

    Thanks in advance

    Innoveli w/ Phillips/GE LED Bulbs?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 12:20 PM PST

I've been slowly replacing all the halogen (!) ceiling lights (BR30) with LED bulbs. I've mostly been going with Phillips for buzz-free operation and good dimming. Has anyone tried an Innoveli Black or Red dimmer with these bulbs? I know they're not on the official compatibility list...

EDIT: to clarify, these are dumb bulbs

Wall switch options for a smart light fixture?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 01:55 PM PST

Right now I have a normal 2xA19 light fixture on the ceiling of my bedroom, and it has 2 hue bulbs in it. I still like light switch control, so I have a Lutron Aurora switch over the normal wallplate, and it works very well. However, the fixture has started to have issues where it has a bad connection on one of the bulbs, and I don't think 2xA19 bulbs provide enough light for the room.

I've been looking at getting a new smart light fixture, but I still want ot be able to control it via a wall switch. Hue would be the easy option, especially given the Aurora switch I already have, but even the cheapest of their light fixtures is $200 and has no color options at all. There are lots of $50-100 options on Amazon, but I can't seem to find a smart switch that would control them. Any ideas?

Wanted: Jukebox experience for my basement bar

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:26 AM PST

Hey everyone, I'm not sure if this qualifies for this sub, but I couldn't think of a better spot for this query...

I have a TV with a chromecast hooked up in my bar and I want to wall mount an android tablet and stream spotify to the TV, but here's the catch: I want to setup some sort of jukebox like experience where party guests can wander over and add a new song to the playlist.

I don't want to expose the actual spotify app to the party guests as I've done this before and no one knows how to use the "add to playlist" or "add to song queue" button. Everyone just clicks play and it halts the current song and switches to their song.. not ideal. I want to have something setup on the screen so that guests can only queue a new song up to the playlist.

    Any ideas?

Power strip with remote to restart modem looking for ideas

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:57 PM PST

I want to put my modem out of reach but on occasion I need to reboot it. I was thinking a IR remote controlled power switch would work but I am finding most default to off after a power outage. Looking for suggestions as I don't want to leave the house and not have the modem startup after a outage.

Outlet that alerts me if there is current being used

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:39 AM PST

I have a guy using a space heater on my dime, which I'm OK with, but I have been finding that he leaved the heater on when he leaves for the day. I want to have a visual alert that the outlet has amperage being drawn from the outlet. A light that I can mount outside of my garage so I can just see if its being used. Any suggestions? Ideally it would be a standard 15a outlet that I can install in my receptacle but I can install anything

Can I make my 2 RGBW strips independent with only one controller?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:39 AM PST

    Hey

I have 2 RGBW strips connected to different receivers, but I only have one controller. Since the strips were ordered at different dates something about them changed and the colors are a bit mismatched, the issue got more serious lately.

And so I started thinking... Is there any way to block signal to one receiver so I can manually set color of one RGBW strip and then the other one so that they match? I only want static colors so syncing won't be an issue.

Change TPLink Kasa smart switch to toggle lights via Sylvania Hub or Google Home instead of cutting power?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:25 AM PST

I have a room full of Sylvania Lightify smart bulbs in my ceiling. I just installed a TPLink/Kasa smart switch but instead of the switch cutting power to the lights, I want it to trigger an on/off via the Sylvania Hub or Google Home or whatever service via Wi-Fi instead. How should I go about that?

Looking for suggestions for motion lights that I can link together.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 01:34 PM PST

Just wondering what's out there. Quick diagram of layout

Red circles are where I can mount lights, Would like one in the back yard and one on the front of the garage be able to turn on all lights. As it stands right now if I turn on my light above back door (just a simple keyless fixture / bulb) it casts enough light that the motion on the front of the garage think it's daytime and won't turn on. The light on side of garage isn't being used right now.

I had been eyeing up something similar to the Halo Home sets where I could get two motions and one security light, but if there's something better I'd appreciate it.

As far as what I have in the home to this point is Google Home and a couple Caseta switches and a Caseta Bridge, bonus points if what I can get can integrate with that.

    Broadlink RM Pro Help

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:26 AM PST

Please help me add my Broadlink RM Pro to my existing Wifi network.

I have a Unifi network with a nanoHD AP but I disabled all 5GHz, so only 2.4GHz is online just to rule that out. I can add the Broadlink in normal or AP pairing modes, with either of the 3 apps on the store, and all get through the first stage fine (actually finding and connecting to the network). However, I still get a connection failed error at the end of the app setup with no details as to why. After some research on the AP, it seems the Broadlink is connected but it never gets assigned an IP Address so I assume that is the problem. I don't have this problem with any other devices so it shouldn't be the AP. I've tried letting it go auto DHCP and setting a static IP (since I can see the MAC), but neither will allow it to "proceed" and get an IP (if that is even truly the issue). Has anyone experienced this issue previously, specifically with Unifi equipment? When I was using my older TP-Link Archer C7 router/AP everything was fine...

Low tech - contact switch to turn off appliance?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 01:07 PM PST

I have a small grain mill, one thing you don't want to do is let it run with no grain. I was wondering if there would be some kind of contact switch I could put in the bottom of the hopper that once the weight of the grain is off it would just switch off the power?

Smart breaker randomly turning on lights at night

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:51 AM PST

Past week I installed a cheap AP-SMT-Breaker02-1CH behind my old bedroom lighting. I did it according to the provided schematic (2 power wires, 2 light and 2 switch), which was pretty easy and it worked with my original lamp switch.

I've installed the "Smart Life" app on my Android phone, and everything worked as espected.

Now, I noticed my light turning on multiple times in the middle of the night. It happens around 5 times every night, and usually it wakes me up and I have to turn it off again. In daytime this doesn't seem to happen, but my light is usually on all day anyway. So I've never had it turn off by itself, only turning on.

I set up an automation in the app that sends a notification when the light gets turned on. It happened at least 3 times this night (05:54:41 , 07:46:47 , 08:58:25).

I wouldn't believe it's me accidentally turning it on myself, since my phone is locked at night.

My theory is there are only 2 ways to turn my lamp on, with my phone, or with the switch. Since my phone is locked, I suspect the switch to randomly switch. But that wouldn't explain why it's only happening at night. Another theory is maybe a hacker is amusing himself with this, but idk.

Does anyone know the source of this witchery behavior? Thanks!
